Lottery Open Thread 2013-05-21 Off By Colin McGowan Ohjeezohjeezohjeezohjeezohjeezohjeez. I’ll update this thing when we know what the pick is. In the meantime, freak out in the comments section. UPDATE: Enjoy the Nerlens Noel Era, everybody. (Starting sometime in 2014.) The Ugly Side of Luck A Friendly Post-Lottery Chat
It’s Noel or a trade for a vet. Porter should be a solid complimentary player. I wouldn’t burn an asset like the #1 pick on a complementary player. It’s hard to speculate on what vet they could get right now. A team who is blowing it up for the 2014 draft is the ideal partner and there should be a couple of them.
Try to trade all four picks and AV to Wolves for K Love.
Trade to either the Magic or the Wizards for a player and their pick.
You are all a bunch of crazy nuts. Nerlens Noel at #1 or trade the pick for a legitimate NBA star. There are no other options. You don’t draft for need with the #1 pick. Taking Porter there would be a major head scratcher. He’s not #1 overall pick material.
@Raoul the only way we get 2014 #1 is if we win it ourselves. Teams don’t trade picks without protection anymore. Not after the Clippers. Plus who is going to give up two high lottery picks for Noel? You think everyone else doesn’t have the same concerns we do? Noel has the potential to be one of the top big men in the game. You take him. Address SF at 19. Maybe Leslie will still be available. Or use the massive amount of cap room we have.
YOU DO NOT PASS ON A BIG!!! ESPECIALLY ONE THAT IS THIS KIND OF ATHLETE AND HAS A FARIED TYPE MOTOR.
Our biggest hole is at the SF position, a guy who can hit an open shot, rebound, pass, and play defense on NBA SFs I think the choice is obvious, we are too far along in our rebuild to swing for the fences you pick the closest to a sure thing as you can. I think Porter is the kind of guy that will be a quality starter who steals an all-star game or two. You take that, especially when as the past shows us that quality to all-star centers just kind of come out of nowhere, usually not with… Read more »
Yeah and Duncan was the CLEAR number one with both great offense and defense for a 7 footer. The second best center left is Gasol who went in the second round.
To my eyes Ben McLemore is the surest thing in this draft. Noel is a big time talent. (Think about this: in addition to his 4.4 blocks, he averaged 2.1 steals as a center–McLemore averaged just 1.7 steals and blocks combined as a super-athletic guard.) But the combination of freakish height/slender build/pre-existing knee injury makes me super nervous about his health prospects. While it would be ideal to acquire a pillar for the frontcourt or fill our gaping hole at the 3, I think that McLemore could be a fit with the team we’re building. He’s an extremely talented offensive… Read more »
Please point out the Top 5 pick big man still in the playoffs. Duncan. Please point out Top 5 big man who has appeared on a MVP ballot the last 3 years. Duncan and Howard. The bust potential for lottery bigs is HUGE. Noel is the lightest center ever in the Draftexpress data base. We watched Zeller get destroyed this season and he as 30lbs on Noel! He is still injured and probably won’t play to January. The last #1 pick who was a center with a knee injury was named Greg Oden. You package our whole draft and get… Read more »
Also wouldn’t. We’d have a 28 year old Dengs rights… I think and let us Spend that other guy who plays the 3 after the season if we so feel free to.
Thoughts on Cavs reaching out to the bulls about Deng? He’s on a 1 year 13 mill deal. This is of course with us keeping 1 and taking Noel.
Luol Deng is def expendable now for Chi with Butler killing it sooo
KI
Dion
Deng
TT
Andy
Noel
Ellington
Livingston

Ideal trade: Cavs 2013 #1 to Charlotte, Phoenix, or New Orleans for their 2013 and 2014 picks. This gets us a top player plus a great shot at 2014 #1.
And the last 2nd overall center pick that was any good was Marcus Gamby. Now if you want 3rd overall picks, (IE Porter Guys) http://www.mynbadraft.com/nba-draft-picks/3rd-overall/30509/ Boom allstars and hall of famers almost all the way down.
Also @ Adam, thanks for having Insider so I don’t have to.
@Peter, Neither of those players weighed less than a lot of point guards. Plus Garnett was a PF, so his weight wasn’t really as much of an issue. But I would like to point out, of the 1st overall selected Centers in the NBA over the past years since Shaq, (there have been 7 of them) only 4 of them are any good (I’m even giving you Bogut) And literally all of them minus Shaq and Dwight (I’m counting the earlier part of the career) have had major injury issues that derailed their careers to some extent, and then if… Read more »
I wouldn’t trade up too much for shabazz – we still need good depth players to replenish the bench after FA losses, and he’s not without his flaws.
If Karasev from Russia is still there at 19, he is an agile Euro 3 who can shoot and pass well.
Chad Ford has us taking Noel & Gobert… I personally want no part of that
I think i would rather trade down at pick 19 and get something and still pick up Giannis Antetokoumpo, C.J. Leslie, or Tony Mitchell
19 to OKC for Thabo Sefolosha, somebody like that, draft Giannis, C.J. or Mitchell in the second round
@CavFan89: You’re sacrificing the #1 overall pick to a new ownership group for a talented yet disgruntled player nearing the end of his contract, by trade fodder I mean anyone outside of kyrie, waiters, TT, and maybe Andy. Like I said hypotheticals, just throwing out crazy proposals for the hell of it. Leuer for Speights, Ellington, and a possible lotto is beyond unrealistic, desperate teams do desperate things.
Chad Ford’s latest mock had the Cavs taking Noel #1. No shock there. But it had Shabazz slipping to Utah at 14. If he does slide that far, the Cavs should be able to trade up from 19 to get him. That would be awesome, IMO. We’ll see if he does last that long.
As far as Noel’s weight, according to Ford, he was around 220 during the season.
Noel. I don’t get the weight issue. ALL centers come in underweight, and he’s basically been unable to do any true strength building because he’s on a rehab regimen for the ACL. Of course he’s down weight. Dwight Howard came in at only 240 lbs, now he’s 270-ish. Kevin Garnett was only 217 when he came into the league. Think it hampered his career any? All centers put on weight, not everyone is Shaq coming into the league. I’m more worried about Noel building an offensive game than I am him putting on enough weight to bang inside. The only… Read more »
@Conner We are mainly focused on Noel, Porter and a little on Oladipo but not on McLemore because we already have offensive options in Kyrie, Dion, almost Tristan, and Andy when healthy. I know McL’s D is good, but not exactly what we need for the rest of it. I think some of us here think that O could probably be a really short 3, but I’m not going to hold my breath on that, and I really don’t think McL could be. After that Wes Johnson comp, I don’t like Porter as much. I’m all for Noel. @grover13 I… Read more »
so long, fellas. :(
@Peter: This is one of most unrealistic trade proposals I’ve ever seen… it will require multiple first-rounders to get Cousins or at least we gotta sacrifice someone better than friggin Zeller
I like the Magic deal Nate. Agree that they could target a team who wants to tank.
I’m against Porter at 1. At least take a guy who’s elite at something.
Cavs actualy drew the third pick also and they had to redraw the balls. If you think the lottery is fixed, you probably think Big Foot is real and that the moon landings was a hoax.

I’d rather keep the pick but lets play hypotheticals. Maybe 1st pick + Zeller + 2nd round pick/trade fodder for Boogie Cousins + Tyreke + 7th pick (Shabazz/BPA).
How have none of you mentioned Mclemore yet? Kid is just as good as Porter on D and 10 times better on Offense. I would take him over Porter easily and probably over Nerlens. As far as trading the pick it would have to be for something huge for me to ne ok with it (Kevin Love).
Boogie? Jesus no. Swing for farther fences. Noel is the perfect trade for a team trying to tank for 2014. They don’t have to play him next year. Minnesota? Portland? Orlando? What about the #1 and Zeller for Vujevik and the #2?
Take Nerlens. I see Otto Porter as being a Wes Johnson type. Quite often the more “all-around” player during college does not work out in the NBA. Take someone with huge potential who is right now good at one thing (in Nerlens case that is defense/athleticism).
Gyaad, that’s not the scenario I was expecting. Thompson and Noel are going to be something else as far as athletic long hustle players go.
Nerlens and Kaslev is what I kind of want if they stand pat.
Nerlens or trade for a vet…Boogie?
HOLY WHAT THE?!?!?! Guys you all realize that Nerlens Noel is 19 years old and is 7 feet tall. Do you really think he is going to stay at 205 the rest of his career? He is more than likely not playing next year. He will add weight because of that PLUS HE WILL FINALLY HIT 20 AND WILL PROBABLY GAIN A LITTLE MORE WEIGHT UNLESS EVERYONE ON THIS BOARD IS STILL AT THEIR HIGH SCHOOL WEIGHT.
Ok, so what exactly would Charlotte be giving up in that scenario? We’re trading down 3 spots to get….? A future first rounder, unless removed of all protections, isn’t worth that type of move down.
Getting the pick gives us about a billion trade options. In a weak draft, trading an unprotected lottery pick isn’t all THAT attractive. But trading the number 1 overall pick? Yea, that’s worth a ton no matter how bad the draft. Noel has big time star potential. There are teams who will give up the farm to draft him.
I totally agree with Jeff. I don’t want Noel at #1.
I’d love to trade down to #4 with Charlotte- let them take Noel or McLemore & we pick up another 1st rounder or two- but the Wizards would take Porter at 3.
OK, not that there’s any chance of this happening, but I’ll throw it out there for fun….WHAT IF:
We swap #1 with Charlotte’s #4….AND we swap last year’s first rounders: Waiters for MKG. Then we use the #4 to take Olapido
PG: Irving
SG: Olapido
SF: Kidd-Gilchrest
PF: TT
C: Zeller
Just sayin’
Cavs also have the #19 pick in round1 courtesy of the Lakers. Here’s hoping that Tony Mitchell of North Texas falls
I’m glad I was wrong in my prediction. Now the question is, does Grant think Noel can live up to his potential? If not, this pick is just another trade asset.
Noel weighs four pounds more than porter…absolutely ridiculous for an NBA center…he is going to get pushed around and likely be injured most of his career…hopefully the cavs can see through the hype and have the cajones to make the smart pick and take porter…
Zero chance the pick is anything other than Noel.. he’s raw offensively, but him and TT would be one of the most athletic and defensively skilled PF/C combos in the league.
Yes we have a hole at SF but hopefully that’s addressed with the 2 picks in round2.

He has some uncanny qualities.
Don’t be surprised if we take Porter at #1
I vote we draft the rights to Wiggins.
Soccer clubs do it with 10-year-olds…
Noel doesn’t even have Tyson Chandler’s offensive skills
Noel’s gotta put on like 40 pounds to be effective at center in the nba…I don’t see him becoming a dominant player…porter is more nba ready and can guard 3 positions and fills a bigger need…
Nick Gilbert delivers! Let’s take Nerlens. He looks like a solid NBA pro to me.
If Noel was the type of prospect Washington or Orlando really wanted to trade up for…the Cavs wouldn’t want to trade the pick away would they? If you like Porter more, you take him. But Noel potentially gives the Cave a freakishly athletic frontcourt that could be dominant on defense with an incredible ceiling. I can only imagine the work ethic of TT and Andy will be a positive for Noel, and also the fact that there wouldn’t be much pressure for him to carry a ton of weight on offense to start.
Maybe they’ll still take porter at one…
This opens up a whole set of trade options. I don’t see us taking Nerlens, but maybe I am wrong. Bottom line: assets have improved. Go get ’em CG.
45wins next year7th seed book it
Anyone else want to jump off a bridge at the thought of he could have had Wiggins if it weren’t for the 1 year of college rule.
holy …… we got no.1!!!!!!
Trade down a spot or two and still draft Porter …
Noel=Tyson Chandler
I WANTED PORTER THOUGH
NERLENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Magic, Cleveland, other team at #3. Calling it.
