Mavericks 102, Cavs 97 (Can we sign an inbounder this offseason?)
2014-01-20The Cavs played like crap in the 1st half, played really well in the second half, and crapped their pants in the final few minutes. The bench played like this:
1st Half:
Shawn Marion canned 3 baseline jumpers of varying distances/difficulty and C.J Miles scored 6 straight points to keep the Cavs hanging around in the first quarter. Luol Deng’s 2 free throws tied the game at 21 with just under 3 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter. After that, the Mavericks went on a 38-16 run before the half.
Besides some individual brilliance from DeJuan Blair, and Shawn Marion (both 5/5 from the field in the 1st half) the Mavericks methodically picked apart the Cavaliers at both ends. On offense they utilized an effective combination of slipping high screens and drive-and-kicks, and played with an energy that earned them most of the 50/50 balls. In the second quarter the Cavs really unraveled on offense, as their attempts to generate some easy baskets with entry passes and splitting screens led to turnover after turnover. It was quite a contrast watching the Mavericks execute their passing and then the Cavs inability to generate any sharp ball movement. The Mavericks have guys that can finish on the break, and the Matador defense of C.J. Miles and Kyrie Irving doesn’t provide much resistance to any squad running a break. So the Cavs gave up 13 points off turnovers in the 2nd quarter alone. The Cavs are lucky they weren’t down more at the half, as the Mavericks missed a handful of wide open set 3s. Monta Ellis played at a frenetic pace, looking to score when he had lanes but finishing with 7 dimes in the first half despite his score-first mentality.
Luol Deng kept the Cavs from being completely embarrassed in the 1st half. You could see him trying to create something where there was nothing and his size allows him to do that better than the Cavs ball-dominant and undersized guards that just get those possessions blocked or stolen. Earl Clark had a rough first half. He did two really nice things: the first was an incredible iso defense on Dirk that led to him actually BLOCKING Dirk’s “unblockable” 1-legged fadeaway. The referee realized that Dirk’s shot is “unblockable” so logic held that Clark must not have blocked it and whistled Clark for the foul. Moments later, Clark did one of his patented left-handed drives. Only this time, instead of losing the ball or denting the rim he veered back to the right side of the hoop and gathered for a right-handed scoop layup that seemed to have a very high probability of going in. He was met in the air by a large body and pushed away from the hoop but somehow no foul was called. After that, with his confidence shot, Clark was a walking…

2nd Half:
Kyrie Irving started the 3rd quarter off well, looking to attack and scoring in a variety of ways. Both Marion and Blair missed shots, and Blair was even issued a T after getting whistled for a loose ball foul against Varejao. Andy, meanwhile, stepped up the energy in the way we are all accustomed. I’ve wondered about Varejao at length this season. Early in the season I thought I was witnessing the beginning of the end. But now it seems as though he still brings a quarter in a half or so of that old Andy energy most games. As long as he can do that (which is similar to the value he provided earlier in his career) he will remain valuable to the Cavaliers. It also helps that he has become such an effective mid-range jump shooter. It’s a really nice safety valve to have on offense. Kyrie’s shot making abilities coupled with Varejao’s energy, especially on the defensive end, brought the Cavaliers to within 10 before Brandan Wright (I spelled his name “Brandon” twice on the Daily Dime twitter account…::sigh::…) threw down two vicious dunks. The Cavs played well in the 3rd, cutting the lead to 13 heading into the 4th.
4th Quarter:
The Cavs bench started off the 4th about as well as they started off the second. Neither Waiters nor Jack were much interested in anything other than useless perimeter passes and contested long-2s. Mike Brown promptly subbed Kyrie and Varejao back in, and…things got much better. Right out of the gate Varejao got an and-1 off a pretty Irving feed. The Cavs went on an 11-0 run. The Cavs held the Mavs to 6 points over 6 minutes which is incredible defense against a team that was shredding them in the first half. Well done, boys. Tristan Thompson and Anderson Varejao completely dominated the boards in the middle of the fourth. Tristan also did a nice job being patient under the basket and either finishing or drawing fouls. That’s important – he gets blocked way too often under there, so it was a welcome sign and hopefully a harbinger of things to come. The crowd really came alive in the 4th quarter and the Cavs energy was off the charts. The roof erupted when Luol Deng splashed a straightaway 3 to bring the Cavs within 2 points with 3 minutes remaining.
After Dirk missed a 3, it really felt like the Cavs were going to win this game. The crowd was in a frenzy and Kyrie ran down the court and tried a PUJIT bank shot. It was strong and the Mavericks secured the rebound at least 3 times. Only they never secured it because somehow the Cavs kept finding a way to jostle it loose. After a mad scrum that seemed to last an eternity, Kyrie found himself spotted up along the left wing all alone. The ball swung to him and he gently penetrated the heavy atmosphere inside the Q with his perfectly arcing stroke. The crowd swelled….and then deflated. Kyrie missed the 3 that would have given the Cavs their first lead since 4-2. Monta Ellis streaked down the court and scored, and the Mavericks were never seriously in danger of losing the lead again. The game continued its frenetic pace but Jarrett Jack made sure the Cavs never got over the hump. He missed the first of 2 free throws with 17 seconds remaining, allowing the Mavs to maintain a 3 point lead. A few possessions later, after Monta Ellis missed BOTH free throws (either would have iced the game), Jack failed to inbound the ball before a 5 second violation was called. Seriously.

Final Thoughts:
-Nate asked me for my opinion of Dion Waiters’ game. I hardly noticed him. I guess 0-4 FG, 0 assists, 0 steals will have that effect. It was Waiters’ first scoreless game of his career. So I don’t have much to say, and besides, I’m sure a healthy dosage of reasonable Waiters’ analysis will take place in the comment section.
-The Cavs bench was abysmal tonight. They finished 3-18 for 8 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 turnovers. Jarrett Jack is an undersized two guard that only seems comfortable taking two-dribble contested pull-ups from just inside the 3 point arc. He has somehow lost the athleticism he previously used to find seams and create mismatches for himself or his teammates. If Jacks puts the ball on the court now and tries to drive he cannot even get past his initial defender. In general, he pulls up short, and either takes a contested shot, or just kicks the ball back out to the perimeter, effectively wasting time on the shot clock and nothing more. The numbers back up this story. Last season, 27% of Jack’s shots came within 9 feet of the basket. This season that has fallen to a mere 20% of his attempts. He’s also less comfortable shooting 3s, particularly off the dribble. This is because the defenders smell blood. They know he can’t get by them with his dribble anymore. So Jack, a once dynamic scorer, finds limited to spot-up 3 point attempts or contested mid-range 2s off the dribble. Consider the differences between last season and this season:
2012-2013: % of Unassisted 3 point makes (dynamic) = 32%
2013-2014: % of Unassisted 3 point makes (dynamic) = 12%
Further proof of Jack’s athletic decline: about 16% of his points last season came in transition. This season that number is 7%.
– Earl Clark finished -17 in 9 minutes. The magic is gone. Earl the stretch 4 is now 4 of his last 28 from distance.
-Luol Deng kept the Cavs from being completely embarrassed in the 1st half and Tristan Thompson had a very nice 4th quarter. He (TT) finished with 8 offensive boards and got to the line 10 times. He was only blocked once. That’s strong finishing for a guy whose biggest weakness is strong finishing. More of this, please.
-Kyrie played well. He missed a lot of shots but he took over the game at various points. He played more than 40 minutes and was +10 and the Cavs lost so you can see how poorly things went without him.
-Varejao was just awesome. He’s automatic from mid-range these days and his energy is still off-the-charts. He finished 7-12 from the field with TWENTY ONE rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals for good measure. He led the Cavs in +/- with +12.
The Cavs put themselves in a hole with their predictable malaise. It always happens the same way: they struggle to create easy looks and the missed jumpers lead to run outs for the other team. Then they start pressing and committing turnovers or taking really terrible shots. Somehow Jarrett Jack always seems to be involved in the malaise but that is just my eye test coupled with my compromised emotions at this point. Look, it’s much more than Jack, it’s just he was brought here to quell those moments of a young team being overwhelmed and mistake prone. And he’s not. Oh and we haven’t even talked about the 5 second violation to end the game. I doubt the Cavs would have won anyway, but what the heck is going on? I’m shocked teams don’t full court press the Cavs and harass the guards all day long with the way they fold under pressure.
Rodney Mac:
Totally agree about the “I believe that a lot of the Dion “love” Kyrie “hate” that many of the commenters have comes from us over-compensating for the Kyrie being so over-rated and Dion so under-rated by the national media. “. That certainly counts me.
Can anyone compare this year’s output for Jack and Livingston?
@cavsOH – Not sure about the notion that free agents come to die in Cleveland. Seems like the Indians, esepcially revived several players back in the 90s. Yes, guys on the downslopes of their careers, but they didn’t all crash and burn. The Cavs have a more dubious record, but the NBA is even more of a players’ league than baseball. @Tom – In terms of ‘developing’ young players, Cleveland is no San Antonio, but I’d say that TT is developing nicely. He may be more of a PJ Brown type f player than a borderline all-star, but he’s solid… Read more »
I guess he had 142 career starts. But 45 was his career high for a season. Somehow he started 6 games for 2011 mavericks and 7 for the 2012 Celts. He also played 5 years here. That’s way longer than I thought.
How long will it be till Sasha isn’t enough. Will he forever be a 1 name player in Cleveland. It’s not a huge list. Clearly 2007 isn’t that long ago and Snow, Hughes, Boobie, and Gooden are all still one names from that team. But Sasha’s stint was much shorter than all of theirs and I can see the day approaching quickly where Hughes is always a 2 name guy. Hell it’s probably already arrived. Snow will be a one namer for a long time just because of how horrific he and how long he tortured us here in Cleveland.… Read more »
In defense of letting Green go I believe that was a Byron Scott call and I don’t think he ever would have developed here. He was cut more than once by the spurs I believe before finally catching on. Even now though he stills a very limited role player. I believe Jack really was always this bad but got hot during 1 playoff series. And I said so at the time of the signing. But I believe in a 12-15 minute a night role some of his value can be restored. Casspi was always a good player if he wasn’t… Read more »
Thanks for fixing. It’s there.
Okay I’ve tried 3 times to post a particular comment and it won’t go. Please check into it. Thnks
I am impressed with the honesty with this blog today It’s refreshing and NO I’m not being sarcastic. Scott nailed it on the commenters and I like how people owned up to it. I would like to think of myself more as a Dion protector than lover LoL. I am critical of Kyrie because I think too often he gets a free pass to the point he is hurting the team. Tom. I’ve never seen any racially charged comments on Dion on this blog . However, I have on other Cavs fan blogs. People were making fun of him in… Read more »
What I meant by Brown getting a better reputation with Lebron on his team was that people thought he was a better coach than what he actually is because those teams won so many games. If Brown hadn’t had Lebron, no way he wins ~60 games those seasons, he probably doesn’t get noticed and doesn’t get the Laker job and probably doesn’t have a return scenario with the Cavs. But his rep was enhanced by all those wins, and all those playoff appearances and has allowed him to keep coaching. No doubt he made Lebron a better defensive player but… Read more »
Ut Oh Commet monster struck and I just complimented this blog!
I understand Kyrie was 10-27 but he was 1-8 in the fourth and I’m not going to bang on a guy shooting 50% thru 3 (9-18) and the best player on our team trying to take over in the fourth and not doing it. It doesn’t always work out. I want a player on this team that wants to win and he does.
Nice post, Tom. ’09 110 Cavs were great teams.
Johnny_Lately, you must have read the CtB style guide. Thanks for brushing Tom up on it.

Interesting stat: With exception of #Spurs, no team that’s won #NBA draft lottery has won a championship afterwards.
From @LucidSportsFan: Of 84 guys drafted Nos. 2-4 since 1985, only 2 have won title w team that drafted them. Story: http://tinyurl.com/mpet8y9 (Actually 3 if you include Darko)
Yessir. More than one way to winning. RT @LucidSportsFan Keep using #Pacers as model for how #Celtics can rebuild without top pick. Also take a look at where #Pacers’ best players drafted. Paul George highest at No. 10, and no one exactly doing cartwheels when it happened
Is Jack really bad or do we not know how to use him? Honest question. Was Caspi that bad or did we not use him right? Was Danny Green a total stiff or did we not use him properly? Larry Hughes? Ok, maybe he was that bad. Everyone was psyched when they signed Jack. Did he really become the worst player ever in one offseason? If he was back in GS and playing the same way he did last year, would we be yelling at Chris Grant for not signing him last offseason? Players, coaches, et al come to Cleveland… Read more »
cavsOH I feel you. I’ve always thought free agents go to Cleveland to die. The only young players the Cavs have acquired in the last 14 years that have improved while wearing a Cleveland uniform are: LeBron Varejao Boobie Delonte Sasha Pretty much every other player has arrived, and not developed. I’ve wondered if there is something about this organization that has precluded it from developing young talent. Is it some combination of acquiring the wrong players / putting them in the wrong places? I thought it was ridiculous the way the Cavs never let Danny Green get any burn… Read more »
I was glad to see the Cavs put up a fight after their dismal first half. The outcome was about what what we’d expect. The Cavs lost to a close home game to a better team. CtB posters seem divided into some interesting tribes 1. Delusional homers that think this team is small step away from relevancy 2. Kyrie lovers/Dion haters 3. Dion Lovers/Kyrie haters 4. Cynical homers who think the team is best served with a lottery pick and a new direction (my tribe) No matter which tribe you belong to the following seems clears: 1. Bennett has been… Read more »
Scott, Nice breakdown. I think in general the expectations for the core has been on the optimistic side and the reality (so far) has led to disappointments. The way fans are falling into tribes has been a somewhat natural response to disappointment. On twitter I see so many respectable Cavs fans/bloggers decrying how much “hate” Dion gets. Many think it is racially charged. (I have never seen any racially-charged comments about Dion so I’m not sure what corners of the internet these are coming from) I never say it but I always think “wow, you need to come read our… Read more »
I like the numbers not spelled out! LoL Hey there are some of us who have bad eyesight with this tiny font. I see numbers better and I appreciate Tom’s writing style. @JHILL just a little tidbit. Porter going to the D-league and yet our Bennett stays. http://www.csnwashington.com/basketball-washington-wizards/talk/otto-porter-may-follow-glen-rice-d-league?p=ya5nbcs&ocid=yahoo
Tom, please burn this recap in that dumpster fire. No one else in the league needs to know how bad Jack is right now. How will Cleveland ever convince New York or Sacramento to take him if they read this? No one else needs to know to press the Cavs guards.
Ugh. This Cavs team is maddening. Just breathe and remember, “Kyrie is only 21… Kyrie is only 21…”
@Corey, I agree, where the hell is he? Does he want to take Bennett’s spot when we finally get our heads out of our asses and send him to the D-League? @grover13 This is the kind of game where you realize how good it is to have a player like Kyrie. But you know damn well we aren’t complaining about this game. We’re complaining about the games where everyone is shooting well and he goes iso for the last 5 minutes of the game, games we lost BECAUSE of, and not despite of Kyrie’s Hero ball. Simple facts: Good teams… Read more »
For those complaining about Kyrie “Hero ball” at the end of the game….be careful what you wish for. Kyrie played the same hero ball in the 3rd, and it’s the only reason the Cavs got back in the game in the first place. I’m in agreement when Kyrie-taking-over disrupts a game….but when any other Cav fails to generate any kind of offense at all, what else do you suggest he does? Other random comments- – It was 21-21 late in the first, when Mike Brown subbed out four starters all at once, soon followed by the fifth. Dallas promptly went… Read more »
BTW I was in New York yesterday watching local news and how pathetic it was to see Carmelo Anthony for the twentieth time pledging to get the team back on track and stop their losing ways — it made me feel more positive about the Cavs, there really isn’t some pall of gloom over an old team losing games badly and some cliff that might have already been slid over —
Plenty of statistical goodness in this recap, and it was also mostly free of the “first-person writing and horrible pop-culture references” disease that Bill Simmons seems to have infected many aspiring young sports writers with. I just have 1 (one) quibble. There is a reason certain prose style conventions exist; see: “He missed the first of 2 free throws with 17 seconds remaining, allowing the Mavs to maintain a 3 point lead.” vs. “He missed the first of two free throws with 17 seconds remaining, allowing the Mavs to maintain a three point lead.” The latter is much easier on… Read more »
Thanks for the constructive criticism, Johnny_Lately. I will make an effort to spell out numbers under 10. Don’t be shy about offering other feedback – any chance we can improve is an opportunity we shouldn’t waste.
i had this convo earlier with a friend about how crazy my thinking was,but imagine how helpful Luke Walton would be for our second unit /// inbounded on last second plays //ball movement/professionalism…… let that marinade
Dion will always get more hate and critiscm than Kyrie will ever get and that’s bc KI built this superstar I’m the best type image for the city and media to perceive him as. So while he puts up another great #s game with 26-9 it’s not about that. It’s the little things that need to start happening from him, otherwise were headed right back to the lotto and he’s gonna having Chris Grant on the streets. Which is not good. Telling you guys Dion is not the problem can’t be stressed enough on here/radio and in the city. he… Read more »
I just don’t understand , how could they be down twenty some points in Q to any team after a few days off. Kyrie takes too many shots and not enough assist, the bench production is responsibility of coaching staff, sub sub sub. They should sign Lou ASAP .Go Cavs
I think I maybe have been the longest term Kyrie Basher in Cleveland. I was advocating trading him 12 months ago for KLove and a few others. But today Kyrie played a very good game. No one else had there shot going or much else for that matter. Kyrie sparked the team in the the third then reignited them in the 4th. Dion played a bad game. Miles had gone cold, Jack was ugly unless he was forced into taking a spot up jumper because the shot clock was winding down, Deng played well but wasn’t shooting well from outside.… Read more »
IDK, if I was Dion I’d want to leave too. Would you want to play pick up basketball with a guy who shoots it 27 times?
Naw Tom You’re fine. You were pretty mild . I wasn’t referring to you. I was referring to the usual onslaught on prior blogs on Dion bashing. I’m actually very surprised how mild the Dion criticism is today. There were many to blame in this game.
I guess I was a little over the top in my criticism of Dion.
THe ENTIRE freakin bench played horrible. There is no elephant in the room on this blog on Dion. EVERY blog bashes Dion when he plays bad and when he plays well It doesn’t matter. But I agree Delly and Dion really click and Brown has pulled that plug on Delly. I guess Jack really impresses him as well as Miles 6 points as a starter. If there is any elephant most avoid and don’t want to speak of its Kyrie. This is the most negative I have seen on Kyrie. It’s warranted on the hero ball mentality.
I would trade him and a protected #1 for MCW, though.
Ok. I’ll bring up the elephant in the room. What was up with Dion? Mental? Physical? Bad bio-rhythm day? I like Dion and want to see him here long term. I think he’s extremely talented and will one day reach near all star status. But something’s not right. I expect inconsistency from young guys, but, shoot, when Kyrie went down he didn’t step up and now this? It’s troubling. His defense has improved significantly. His assists are up. His shooting remains streaky. Over the last few weeks the offensive flow with him in has improved (some). I’d like to see… Read more »
I think Kyrie lost his shooting legs in the fourth . . . which is why he needed to pass out of the double team for easy baskets. That’s what sealed the win against Denver. The good news: Despite a slow start, bad officiating, almost no points from the bench, no points from Dion or Zeller, CJ 0-5 from 3 point, cold shooting by Kyrie in the fourth, no ball movement (late) in the fourth – the Cavs were still in a position to tie the game with 2.8 seconds left. Defensive pressure was up some in the 2nd half,… Read more »
For all the criticism of Jarrett Jack’s shot selection, he shot 50% from the field. He only took four shots and scored six points. Kyrie took 27 shots and scored 26,shooting 37%. I don’t understand why Jack and Dion get all the criticism, and Kyrie always gets a pass.
I didn’t think coaching was the issue. Mike Brown’s not getting cute with his lineups and guards inbound the ball all the time in the NBA. They obviously made halftime adjustments on D. When you can’t count on anything out of you bench it is tough to win. And I thought Kyrie played well. The shooting percentages weren’t good but he also had 9 assists and a few of his misses drew so much attention that either Tristan or Andy was able to secure the O rebound. I thought the officiating was uneven as well. Calderon was still moving on… Read more »
Underdog – I was thinking the same thing on that last play. Brown draws up a slow developing play that includes a difficult cross court pass. For some inexplainable reason – he has 6’2 Jarrett Jack inbounding the ball. Dallas’s coach Carlisle, rightly puts 6’11 Brandan Wright to guard the inbounds play. Now it takes 4 seconds for Irving to criss-cross Miles and run around a Varejao pick where he does get open – but how is Jack supposed to make that pass when he can barely see past Wright?? IMO – Brown again sets his team up to fail… Read more »
On the court, the Cavs appear to have put enough pieces in place to at least make the playoffs. I really think the coaching is the problem right now…they just don’t play smart basketball at times.
Stuck at work so I recorded it. Skipping the first half when I watch it tonight. For my own health, I need this team to win the next 3.
@Corey – Amen, brother! I thought Tom was a bit too nice to Kyrie in the summary, stating “Kyrie played well.” Frankly, I thought Kyrie cost us the game. We played wonderfully in the 4th quarter until Kyrie tried his hero ball BS. At the 3:00 mark, we were down 2. Kyrie then goes 0-4 over the next two minutes and we are down 98-92 and the game is over. I love Kyrie’s talent, but he forces so many shots at the end of games. And he doesn’t need to anymore. Man, this one hurt. A win would have been… Read more »
Brown seemed steamed at Jack in postgame interview. I think he basically said I’ve never seen anyone more wide open in my life and Jack tried to explain it to me, but I just don’t see it. (End MB summary) I’m waiting for the day he gets traded. I’d take anything at this point for him, even Andrea Bargnani. Even AB can score and hit FTs sometimes. Why is it that that set of initials is currently a bad omen?
c how many shots deng tookplus getting to free throw line to get his points he is awesome he is a team player then look at kyrie shots taken to getting his points he is about himself .cavs gotta have more of a passing game.
Seriously, have the Cavs scored off an inbounds play after a time out even once this year? Is anybody “accountable” for that? From watching the Cavs, it seems like the most difficult play in basketball.
When will the rest of Cleveland see that Kyrie in crunch time is killing us let alone his 27 shots. Smh. Unreal how a PG is running a offense strictly for himself. Sports center doesn’t help as it only states Kyrie Irving had 26-9. Yeah what about the 10-27 shooting and careless dribbling game after game late in these games. Dude needs to get it together and stop playing so selfish. Move the ball and hit open shots. Set up and run a offense. It’s year three and I’m good with finding any more excuses for Kyrie. Be a point… Read more »
This team can’t win if Kyrie shoots 27 times, scores 26 points, and shoots 4 free throws. That’s pathetic.
Is this the worst our bench played this season? 8 points???
