Danny Ferry resigns as Cavaliers GM
2010-06-04Here’s the report from Windhorst. My gut reaction is that Ferry did the best he could with the resources he had (the man turned Damon Jones into Mo Williams), but ultimately the Cavs didn’t reach their goal. I think Ferry did a great job and could easily be the GM of a championship team, but sometimes there is no try in this business. More on this later.
Donnie Walsh is not an owner. He’s the GM of the Knicks. James Dolan owns the Cabelvision, MSG and the Knicks.
I also have my own blog check it out on:

Yea, it’s always better to have a wheeling and dealing owner who is willing to spend but might over step his boundaries to much, compared to a quiet, never involved owner who makes virtually no decisions ever. The best owned teams in the NBA have owners who get involved. The worst, like Donnie Walsh, are never seen or heard from on anything of importance. At least that’s my opinion.
Well posted, Rich. Shoals self-depricates but somehow expects us to think NOW he’s seen the light. The Finals still provide a showcase of the NBA at its best. HIS fixation on LeBron is his own psychological issue to work out. Concerning Ferry, he did deal, often flipping the roster like a house on Extreme Makeover. I cannot argue with the attempt, and as bob says, now Gilbert is the show. I’ll take a passionate owner in the Cuban mold sans the Cuban arrogance/social foolishness any day. LeBron would rather roll with him than Brown and Ferry anyway. The next few… Read more »
Sports journalism, above all brands of journalism (save political coverage in Washington), is the worst.
http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/06/04/dear-lebron-james-i-take-it-all-back/ I just had to post this. The media is so silly it’s almost unbelievable they can be this ignorant to the situation. So, here we have Shoals taking back all he has ever said about LeBron. He, like so many others in the media, are stunned at how much air-time LeBron is taking up and detracting from the finals. What is so astounding is he doesn’t, or chooses not, realize that the media plays a bigger role in this than LeBron himself. The media DOES NOT HAVE TO COVER LEBRON JAMES ALL THE TIME. Shoals DID NOT HAVE TO… Read more »
Ahh the rumor mill is already churning. Windy is talking big trades, players, draft picks, it’s all in the works.
If nothing else, I can say this, as long as Dan Gilbert is the owner of this team I will ALWAYS be interested in the off-season. That guy is always, always, always, trying to find new ways to spend his own money. I thank him for his generosity.
okay…so i can post now that i’m out from behind the proxy…
ferry news made my week – this is the real change we needed to make…none of the moves he made in 2005 worked out & we’ve been stuck ever since…and if james does not re-sign, it’ll be b/c of the current mess we’re in w/ very limited flexibility…gilbert is the only thing we have going for us right now…
bring on bill simmons!
Well, I thought getting a bunch of guys in their mid-to-late thirties to convince Lebron to sign on for the next six years was just pure genius.
Maybe we can hire Ron Harper and two first round draft picks.
“Did the best he could with the resources he had.” Whaaaaa?
He had boat loads of cash and got Hughes, Marshall, and Jones. Even if you dismiss the Hughes’ signing, he threw tons of money at Jones and Marshall – two horrible signing. And how can you say he was stuck with Jones when he signed him. Further, he always had the advantage of Gilbert’s pocketbook. If anything, he had major advantages.
Ray Allen said recently that he absolutely would have really considered coming to Cleveland, but was never, ever called. So I dunno where you get that Ferry tried, cause Ray Allen specifically said that he didn’t.
Was shaq the only human playing basketball last year? Anything for Wally’s contract would have been an improvement.
Rich-
-Ferry did try to sign Ray Allen. Ray Allen took a max contract and 30 million dollars more from Seattle. That’s not on Ferry.
-Drew Gooden was traded for Jim Paxson. (Mitigating Factor: We got Anderson Varejao in the Drew Gooden/Eric Williams deal anyway…)
-Ferry’s inability to move Wally Sczerbiak was because Kerr balked at trading Shaq at the last moment. That’s not on Ferry as well.
Wow, you must some really good inside sources D. Cause from what Windy said, this had nothing to do with LBJ. Again, if you give the coach/gm/whoever all the credit for the great regular season records, then they get the blame for the post season failures. Just a quick recap. He signed Larry Hughes and didn’t even bother to ask Ray Allen. Yea he turned Damon Jones into Mo Williams. He also signed Damon Jones. He turned Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden into Ben Wallace and Delonte West, but he also signed Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden. He hasn’t been… Read more »
Danny was a great GM and MB was a great coach. He has been widely acclaimed in the news pertaining to the NBA he was one of the better GM’s in the game. The coach who delieverd the best record in the NBA 2 years in a row and the GM who have NEVER hesitated in making a big move both gone???? Sounds like someone besides Dan Gilbert wanted them gone…… We give the man what he wants and he stays. 2 moves down how many more to go LBJ?
If the story I heard earlier on Sportscenter is true that Ferry resigned because he was upset that Mike Brown got let go, then I’m glad he quit. For anyone to think that Mike Brown is the guy to coach a team in the playoffs after how he has coached in the last 3 playoffs, well, I don’t want that person being in charge of hiring the next Cavs coach. For as much as I defended MB, even last year’s panicfest w/ Orlando, I gave up on him after this years ineptitude against Boston. But in all reality, if Lebron… Read more »
Good! He should have been the first one fired.
