Links to the Present: “Acting” General Manager Edition
2014-05-10We might be getting close to giving David Griffin his due as a real boy General Manager. According to the Plain Dealer’s Mary Schmitt Boyer:
“…but a source said that after interviewing four or five serious candidates, the Cavs settled on Griffin…”
It would seem that Mike Brown’s job would be a little safer if a new GM didn’t need to come in and “put his stamp” on the team or whatever GMs do. (Browns fans know all about this) But we’ll see…
How do you feel about Griffin/Brown? Do you trust Griffin to make the Cavs draft picks?
@JHill- It’s not that simple. It’s not as easy as work ethic, talent, and and game IQ. System matters. Griffin came from the Phoenix world of push the ball up the court, move the ball quickly, run whenever you can. Offense is predicated on beating the other team down the court on both ends of the floor- getting into an offense before the opposing D can set up, and getting back on D to keep them from doing the same to you. A coach running a system of “pack the paint, crash the boards” is prohibitive to running on both… Read more »
griffin is the right hire—–I think the cavs are still ” trolling ” for possible coaching replacements–search might get upscaled with the hiring of griffin—–if brown is retained —hire an offensive minded coach/ consultant and BROWN TOLD TO LISTEN/ LEARN from this person—-any more rumors about KARL coming here or are those rumors already dead
I think that if Griffin adds offensive minded players who are willing to learn Mike’s defense it would kind of be the best of both worlds. Mike would turn them into OK defenders and then they are already good at offense so it makes Mike look less clueless.
I have a real concern that Griffin will be adding players to fit a type of system that Brown is not capable of coaching.
I like it. Griffin seems like a savvy guy. As far as MB goes, I don’t think Griffin is a fan. However, simply replacing MB for the sake of replacing him makes little sense given his contract and the continuity issue.
I predict that MB gets shown the door as soon as a better prospect seems likely. There are a number of big names out there right now (Kerr, SVG, etc), but Griffin undoubtedly knows who might actually consider coming to Cleveland.
I trust him enough to make draft picks. But do I trust Mike Brown enough to get those draft picks in the best position to succeed and the answer to that is no.
This is smart. The right hire. And based on what I heard in the end of season press conference from Griffin I don’t think Mike Brown is the coach for him.
