BREAKING!!! Cavs win! Cavs win!
2014-05-20Thank God for Nick Gilbert’s bow tie, Bill Simmons’ reverse jinx, Jeff Cohen, not tanking, and the luck of the Moondog (is that a thing?) Cleveland just won the NBA draft lottery for the third time in four years. With a 1.7% chance at the top pick, Cleveland won… again. Robert Attenweiler will have more later, but this is a moment of pure joy. In the words of Joe Tait, “Cavs Win!”
Either take Wiggins or turn the pick into a DeMarcus Cousins/Kevin Love.
Need to get the best talent in the draft even raw. This team isn’t ready to seriously contend this year because of someone they get in the draft. Even Lebron took a couple of seasons to find his groove.
I (for the 500th time) wanted Oladipo last year, but would have been happy with Noel. I thought Bennett was a flaming dumpster fire the minute the pick was made.
Bill Simmons reaction tonight is much watch. Love watching him squirm in disgust.
Listen, Embiid (btw, Nate, weren’t you the guy who wanted to take a big guy with knee problems last year? Just when I think you know something about basketball…smh) is BY FAR the best prospect in the draft. Period. He IMMEDIATELY makes the Cavs better by being a defensive force. His post game is 100x more developed already than Noel’s. As someone wrote earlier today, his ceiling is Hakeem and his basement is Serge Ibaka. However…his injury is clearly a concern. He recently said on radio he is 100% pain free, so… But it is a concern… Btw, Wiggins is… Read more »
@john – i agree. and that is why i think they need turn this stroke of luck into an established player. this pick is a HUGE asset, but it doesn’t really fit our team needs.
I agree with hot sauce. Wiggins is really really raw. Not a very good ball handler and that is being kind since he cannot go left at all. Also can’t finish with his left and has trouble finishing in traffic. Not a terrible shooter but he has a long way to go, flicks his wrist right which puts a side spin on the ball. I think he will be a very good player, all star caliber, but I am not any where near convinced that he is a guaranteed superstar. He has the physical tools to be and is certainly… Read more »
So fired up, I just bought all 13 people at the bar a round of shots…..in St. Louis!!
@nate – you really think adding wiggins to our current roster makes a contender in the next 1-2 years? i think it would make us a marginal contender with real probability of another blow up like this year. who is the leader on that team? how does it fit together? wiggins can’t spread the floor.
Chad ford says Wiggins would play the 2 for the cavs, do others think so too. I think he would play the three. Would philly try to trade up to #1 and give us their 3rd and 10th pick. It all depends on who the cavs like, but i think wiggins is the best option as he has already shown he is a dominate defender and I’m sure him and AB and TT would get along well.
If Minny doesn’t take that trade, they’re stupid. But it’s dumb to trade for Love. He’s not signing an extension right away.
@JHill – you think? If so, I am down. But not sure Minny takes that.
It would only take the #1 and TT to get Love.
One addendum to my post – LeBron is the real prize here. I think turning the #1 into an established player makes LeBron a real possibility. To me, that is why the #1 is exciting. LeBron was not a real option before. But I think he may be now. Adding yet another young, high potential guy to Kyrie, Dion, Bennett, TT will scare LeBron away I think.
We all realize that adding a young kid like Wiggins to this team does not really make it that much better immediately, right? I like Wiggins, but he has A LOT of growing as a player to do. And is not a sure thing.
If they want to make an immediate leap to contention, they need to make a trade for a big piece and then try to sign LeBron. If they can get Love for #1, TT, and Waiters AND sign LeBron, that is light years better than just adding Wiggins.
Sam Amico is a fucking retard anyways.
Sam Amico needs to put down the pipe. He’s talking #1, TT, and Waiters for Love (without extension).
Kyrie’s ready to sign his max contract.
On second thought, Kevin Love may play here.
Prospective NBA coaches trying to get Griffin on the phone.
And think, the odds of a future Embiid / Love / Lebron / Waiters / Irving lineup are greater than the odds of the Cavs winning the lottery this year.
If it wasn’t for his back, I’d say Embiid. But Wiggins is probably the best pick.
Besides, think of all the open looks Hawes will get with Kyrie, Dion, and Wiggins on the court….provided they sign him.
Embiid – but only if his back is good.
But the possibilities are endless and we have 38 days to talk about it (unlike the Browns draft where we had 6 months of 24/7 discussion of who they’d pick at number 4 – and in the end no one in the entire country thought it would be Justin Gilbert)
WIGGINS. Gotta be WIGGINS. Run up and down the court. Score 130 a game. This is what David Griffin wants. Hire MDA for all I care. Just IMPOSE YOUR WILL. WIGGINS + THE DION WAITERS ZONE + UNCLE DREW + SUPERDOVA RAINING CORNER TREYS
For the love of God do not draft a 12 power forward in 8 years.
This is pretty much all the proof anyone needed that the NBA lottery is not rigged.
I’m in a really weird place right now. I almost wish they got #3 instead of #1 so I can’t second guess them later for taking the wrong guy.
The guy I really want to take is Embiid- but I can’t see how you pass up Wiggins/Parker for a seven footer with a bad back. Just can’t risk whiffing again.
underdog you are in rare form tonight—-enjoy your comments
Griffin keeps saying they want to win now. I smell a trade. Love is an obvious target, but we would need a guarantee he signs. Who else could we trade for?
The Cavs getting the number one pick is like the league sayin they’re sorry for us taking Anthony Bennett so it’s like a do over. – Nichy
Wait a minute. I still kinda like Bennett.
oh Canada—–wiggins it is —has superstar talent and is very coachable—can you say small forward —something we haven’t said in a long time for someone wearing a cavs uniform
My brain is already in scenario overload. I’ve already talked myself into all three of them, as well as various trade possibilities.
Starting to look into flights to Vegas for summer league.
The true Cleveland sports fan is worried this will ruin the Cavs’ chances of winning next year’s lottery. – Michael Rosenburg
I love Parker but if it was me drafting for the Cavs it is 1. Wiggins 2. Embiid 3. Parker. Jabari is another guy who needs the ball in his hands and doesn’t play much defense. If Embiid had no back problems I’d have him #1, we do need a rim protector.
Why would you take a guy with a question mark? Parker is doughy, injury prone, and a tweener. Embiid has back problems. I’d rather have Vonleh than Embiid. Take Wiggins or trade down.
Now the hard work begins. Thank heavens for not tanking. Good players available for sure. Take a good luck at Embid, but Wiggins is a nice fit and has the most talent. If Parker can play the 3 spot, then maybe he’s the guy with the best all around game.
I concur. Wiggins
Wiggins. Don’t even think twice.
Don’t say that yet Nate Smith, The pick has not been made. Who knows what is on the mind of people in that front office.
Nate,
a. Would you take Embiid if his back turns up fine?
b. Who then would you take?
No centers with back problems! No (more) tweener forwards!
I don’t think we should be happy about this. Or at least not ecstatic. Excited yes, but I doubt we can handle a 3rd #1.
Cleveland the CANADA of the South!!!
Jabari Parker and Kyrie Irving: Do you think this will finally get Coach K out of North Carolina and on to the Cavs Bench?
YES!!!
Someone throw some cold water on Tom Pestak…I’m sure he passed out.
I JUST WOKE UP! WAS IT A DREAM!? DID IT REALLY HAPPEN!? I HIT MY HEAD SO HARD AFTER HYPERVENTILATING I’M THINKING MAYBE IT’S NOT REAL. I’M GOING TO START USING — LIKE — nomad
AL MICHAELS SAUD IT BEST ” DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES “—-IS THIS ENOUGH TO POSSIBLY PERSUADE LEBRON TO RETURN—-COACHES ARE CALLING GRIIFFIN BEGGING FOR THE CAVS COACHING JOB
Welcome to the Cavs, Wiggins/Parker/Embiid!
PS: I may kill myself if we draft Randle. Thank god Chris Grant is gone. That is all.
By the way…. I will say it first “LeBron is coming back to Cleveland”.
