Recap: Cavs 88, D-League Select 82 (Or, the time the Cavs won without LeBron)
2010-07-14It’s Summer League, so these will be bullets:
-Hickson was more the same than different: flashes of greatness on offense, serious issues on defense. Here’s my Daily Dime piece on his play.
-Eyenga: raw as hell, but talented. Finished some plays when guys set him up with alley-oops or cuts to the basket, and has three-point range. Nothing else is there yet. No ball skills, questionable defensive fundamentals, and doesn’t know where to be. He’s at least a year away.
-Danny Green is a solid role player, but the Cavs asked him to do to much. If he can play the role he’s supposed to, he”ll be good.
-Pooh Jeter is one of those guys who’s perfect for VSL: he won’t make the NBA, but he’s confident enough to take over Summer League games.
-Macej Lampe — nice mid-range game for a big man. Not an NBA talent.
Honestly, that’s all I have for tonight. I love Kyle Lowry; more on him later. Wish he could have played next to LeBron. Alas.
@ the truth hurts.
yeah, we’re not detroit. detroit has won basketball championships.
Everyone knows that a rust belt post industrial midwestern city isn’t big enough for a championship team! Peyton Manning, man think how many commercials he would’ve been in if he wasn’t languishing in middle of no where Indianapolis.
And the pistons. the cavs will win a chip before the pistons, I guarantee it. How will they get anyone good to play there?
I’m trying to figure out ATLs end-game here. They’ve made little to no improvements, but yet they’ve committed themselves to this core of guys. They have to get a real C and they have to find a PG if they feel like competing. They’ve done neither (unless Teague makes a big leap). I’ve heard they’ve been after Mo Williams, but unless that comes with a 1st round draft pick or 2, I’m not interested in what they’re selling.
Still, if they keep everything as is, we aren’t competing with them.
@Justin
“One note on the Cavs 10-11 team: we should be a very athletic team as a whole. Mo, Boobie, Basie, West, Moon, Jamison, Jawad, Hickson and Andy are all fairly athletic. Some more than others but collectively doesn’t that make athleticism a major strength of our team? especially against teams like Boston or Atlanta?”
Don’t fool yourself. The Cavaliers will not be competing with Boston or Atlanta next year.
I really dont like the Lowry signing unless we are getting rid of Mo. I think that we should get rid of Mo for prospects/draft picks/financial flexibility. Start Lowry, Boobie backs up and have Basie fight for a few minutes. I watched the first half, including the part when Byron Scott got into the commentator booth. Did anyone notice that he expects Hickson to start at the 4 and possibly move Jamison to the starting 3? That would be an interesting proposition and one that would probably put our best players on the court to start the game. (assuming, of… Read more »

Kahn.
Hickson still plays better defense than Amare.
Speaking of teams with too many small guards, why the hell did Minnesota pick up Luke Ridenour?
If the Cavs get Lowry, would they try to deal Boobie or Mo? How many 6-0 guards can an NBA team have?
Hickson looked good to me. He already said he’s out there to work on his jumper and stay in shape. I don’t want him doing too much and risk injury. Not sure if he’s the next Amare, but that would be great. Eyenga et. al. are the ones that really have something to prove and didn’t impress me at all. Danny Green was really a disapointment – I really expected more from him. I was hoping that at least 2 or 3 guys would shine that would fit in nice with our team or at least be considered trade assets… Read more »
I’m starting to wonder if rotations and defense aren’t necessarily just about effort but about intelligence. Perhaps Hickson is just incredibly stupid. If that’s the case, there’s nothing anyone can do about that. It’s not his fault his I.Q. sucks.
I wouldn’t really worry too much about Hickson’s D just yet. It’s the first game of Summer League!
Seriously, after watching the entire game, Hickson was playing with zero intensity. He seemed content just to work on his jumper, get some running in, and not hurt himself in a meaningless game. I won’t worry about it unless he plays this lackluster in the regular season. THEN there would be a problem…
IF hickson is still making the same mistakes in SUMMER LEAGUE….geesh….then we’re screwed more than i thought….he should be dominating these games to no end and really his shot should be the only concern…but that wasnt the case…dont understand how this guy has been in the league 3 yrs and still doenst know defensive rotations and rebounding.. granted its one game and really doesnt matter too much, but i figured regardless he would dominate the game i guess cavs arent using sasha kaun yet? like the lowry signing but houston responded quickly they would match it so not sure we’ll… Read more »
Lampe moved well on defense, made a couple of nice passes, and he can run the floor (which our new up-tempo offense will require). If no centers are available, and he’s cheap enough, you can’t see him as serviceable for 15-20 minutes?
Totally agree on Eyenga.
Why can’t Hickson play D? He is missing an opportunity to be really good.
If Hickson becomes the next Amare, I’m fine with that.
I like the Lowry signing, hopefully the Rockets don’t match. He’s young, quick and plays hard. He had spurts of great play on that Rockets team two years ago.
Love the Lowry signing if Houston doesn’t match (although, if Houston doesn’t match, does that mean I should love it less?) He seems like a great second unit guy, although I am hoping we start to target some front court guys soon. I’m guessing Boobie becomes permanent shooting guard. Does Mo slot over there too and Telfair and Lowry become our PGs?
