Notes and Errata: September 13th, 2010
2010-09-13-I should probably lead with basketball news, but MICHAEL VICK IS BACK. Man oh man, watching Vick turn a collapsed pocket into a 20-yard scramble, firing laser beams into impossible spaces, and even blowing easy gains by firing a bullet to an open receiver 7 yards away brought me back to a time where anything seemed possible. (By the way, my 1st column on my original blog was about Michael Vick. Click through to see an 18-year old kid who doesn’t know what he’s doing waxing poetic.) In short, this was an important sports day for me. Oh, and great call to have the smallest quarterback in the league run directly at the defense, out of the shotgun, on the most important down of the game.
Still, the important thing is that Vick is back. Gaga dominated the VMAs. Insane is the new mainstream.
-U-S-A! U-S-A! Fantastic, if somewhat anticlimactic, world championship for Team USA. The international game really suits Durant perfectly, and he stepped up. Good stuff all around.
-Former Cav Darius Miles is getting one last shot at resurrecting his NBA career. By the way, he’s 28 years old.
-One more football note: if there’s any worse feeling in sports than “I just blew the game-winning play by committing a holding violation,” I’d love to hear about it.
-Random poll question: if you’re Chicago, do you include Noah in a ‘Melo trade? He’s such a clear upgrade over Deng, but I have been geeking out on what Thibodeau is going to do with Noah on defense all summer.
-Something I said while watching the VMAs tonight: “If there was an award for ‘artist with the most influence on NBA player fashion,’ Kid Cudi would have walked away with it.”
I’ve seen a high school basketball player pick a guy’s pocket as he was bringing the ball down the court in the last minute, then drive down the court and score the go-ahead basket…on the wrong goal.
Also, I apologize for being in a bad mood. I think all things considered, actually, today may be the darkest day in Cleveland sports fandom in a decade or more. Think about it:
– The Browns, for all the cautious optimism (6 wins, anyone?) just lost their season opener for the 10th time in 11 years, to an absolutely terrible TB team.
– The Cavs will almost certainly not win a championship while anyone on their current roster is still on the team
– The Indians.
What the hell are we supposed to do?
Not to be a hater (love ya, Krolik), but Lady Gaga is the opposite of insane. She’s a really painful Madonna retread. I guess she would count as ‘insane’ if Madonna never existed, but her shtick was played out before she started.
It would be “insane” – i.e. unexpected if she didn’t win a bunch of VMAs. All she has is off-the-wall videos. She’s sort of like the Green Jello of 2010 pop music.
Yeah Vick is back – the only problem is you failed to mention that in spite of his running all over the field – when it came time to ACTUALLY put his head down and try to get in the endzone – he throws it away. If he runs on that red zone play the Eagles win and it’s a lot bigger story today.
Two sad statements…Krolik is about to graduate and still watches MTV, and he also bought in to the Mike Vick overhype machine from a few years back.
The hold was atrocious. There are certainly worse ways to lose, but that was bad. Dallas made a massive mistake over-evaluating their needs in the draft. They absolutely should have drafted lineman, even if htey wouldn’t have planned on them starting. No one gets hurt more than lineman, and you need depth. Clearly Dallas has none. Big, big mistake letting Flozell walk + getting no lineman.
I wasn’t aware that anyone out of their teens still watched the MTV VMAs… or MTV for that matter.
how often can you find an athletic, energetic, and defensive-minded center like Noah? Not often. I know its still early in Noah’s career, but he puts in 110% every game and doesn’t demand attention..the same can not be said about Melo. IMO, the loss of Noah would overlap Melo’s production.
Romo probably doesn’t get that touchdown throw off w/o the hold. He would have thrown it at another moment, maybe even somewhere else on the field but that exact same throw would not have happened w/o the hold. It would’ve been a worse feeling if the lineman gave up on the play realizing he had no choice but to hold and allowed the sack instead. But by committing the hold, its 50-50 on if he gets caught or not. Now if the Browns were on defense, no way…and I mean NO WAY does that hold get called. Dallas would be… Read more »
Getting called on a penalty for taking off your helmet on the field because you think your team just won the game, then in the next play they kick the field-goal to win. That’s a worse feeling. Another ‘bad’ feeling from this weekend would be catching what would amount to a game winning catch and instead of securuing the ball and laying on the ground, you decide to get up and celebrate – which cause you to drop the ball as you’re trying to get up to quickly. Outcome = incomplete pass and no TD = loss, At least if… Read more »
Kid got beat on a move by the defensive end/lb. He had a clear inside go so an o-lineman grabs and hope not to get caught. It’s worse if you commit a penalty that’s stupid like leaving a tackle uncovered by lining up a yard back because you don’t know the play. Then that’s worse.
