Preseason Recap: Cleveland 107, Chicago 98 (or, Rose Might Be Back)
2014-10-21Tonight’s preseason game between the Cavs and Bulls was the first in a series that should lead to an intense rivalry come playoff time. Both teams came into the game looking at it as dress rehearsal for the regular season, especially the Cavs who will probably be resting LeBron James during their final preseason game against Memphis. This game oscillated between stellar ball movement, great individual play, and transition basketball for the entire 48 minutes. Derrick Rose seemed like he’s back, but Kyrie Irving and Anderson Varejao didn’t let that stop them from having great games as well.
Derrick Rose led all scorers this game with 30 points on 12-18 (4-5 from behind the three line) in just 24 minutes. However, he only had three assists. Kyrie led the Cavs scoring 28 points on 10-20 shooting to go with seven assists, two steals, and just two turnovers in 38 minutes. Kevin Love acted like his arms were industrial vacuums ran by turbo charged engines installed by Vin Diesel to grab 13 total rebounds. Varejao looked like his legs were powered by the same engine brand as Love’s arm vacuums. Wild Thing had 22 points on 8-10 shooting to go with two assists, two steals, two blocks, five defensive boards, and three offensive boards. Whoever had to fill out his box score must have gotten a sore hand.
This game the Cavs started Andy at center, and it payed off. Andy scored the first points for the Cavs, ran around like a madman, set screens, made quick passes, and cut to the hoop to get himself four points and two assists in the first four minutes of the game. Andy was the lead man for the Cavs as Irving and Love struggled shooting the ball in the first quarter. Although, Love was setting gorgeous off ball screens and rebounding like crazy.
Rose had four early points for the Bulls as a result of blowing by Irving. The Bulls seemed to keep up with the Cavs only ending the quarter down four, but it felt like much more, as the Cavs seemed to be hustling a lot harder than the Bulls. Waiters was the first Cav out in the first quarter, but he came back in after only a minute of rest to lead the second unit without James and Irving.
The second quarter started with Tristan and Dion running some two man plays. On the first play, Thompson ended up getting an offensive charge, but on the second play, Dion penetrated into the paint and dished the ball to him for a thunderous dunk. The following possession Dion hit the rewind button and had Shawn Marion swap places with Thompson, so Marion could also get an easy dunk. Aaron Brooks punished the Cavs guards showing speed and poise scoring the first seven Bulls points in the quarter to keep them within four of the Wine & Gold. However, the Cavs continued getting assisted baskets from great off ball movement to stretch the score to 29-38 with about four and half minutes left in the half. Derrick Rose then decided he was “Officially Back.” He scored sixteen points at will. At one point after he made two layups in twenty seconds, I wrote “Can he even shoot the ball anymore?” (he hadn’t taken a single jump shot at this point in the game). He then came down the court, jab stepped, and sailed a three that seemed to push Dion Waiters backwards in awe. The Cavs finished the quarter ahead only by two, 49-51.
The third quarter opened up with Andy hustling to receive a super quick pass from Love right underneath the hoop for an easy bucket. Rose continued trying to prompt “He’s Back” headlines by getting the first seven Bulls points on open layups. Andy had six of the first eight Cavs points in the quarter. After Pau Gasol had two unacceptable baskets, the second from an offensive board, the Cavs were forced to call a timeout with the Bulls leading. The score was 63-62. Kyrie came out of the timeout ready to outshine Rose’s individual skills. Kyrie had nine points in four minutes while love contributed another four at the same time taking the Cavs on a 13-2 run putting them up by ten points. The Cavs ended the quarter up with the score 75-82.
The fourth quarter started with the Cavs defense doing some crazy trapping that looked really unorganized, but was surprisingly effective, as it managed to make the Bulls lose the ball four times in six possessions. It wasn’t pretty basketball at all. After the Bulls took a timeout to stop the Cavs super effective ugly defense, LeBron made two turnaround jump shots in a row, then missed the third, which led to an offensive board and Kyrie getting fouled. The Cavs went up by thirteen after Kyrie sank the two free throws, and LeBron checked out of the game with six minutes left. The Bulls then went on a quick 6-2 run, but David Blatt called a time out to slow the Bulls’ momentum. The Cavs finished the game trading baskets with the Bulls, while Thompson scooped up two more offensive boards and had a monstrous dunk from Matthew Dellavedova on an inbounds play from under the basket. Cavs win, 107-98.
Thoughts In No Particular Order:
1. Rose seems like he is back and is ready to summon the wizard powers of his tattoo. He jetted past the Cavs guards too many times to count. This was the best time. Kyrie played terrible defense by standing upwards most of the time. He needs to at least make an attempt to look he is trying. Matty D played hard when he was put on Rose, and even though Rose scored, Matty deserves praise for his efforts.
2. Andy is an animal and outplayed both Pau Gasol and Joakim Noah. He blocked Gasol two times on one play, and he scored at will on the pair with his odd hook shots. Andy out Noah’d Noah.
3. The Cavs offensive rebounding abilities are insane. In the first quarter, there was a sequence of two possessions where the Cavs grabbed a total of five offensive boards. If teams give the Cavs two and three looks on a possession, they’re not going to be able to hang for long.
4. Tristan played great when he let the game come to him. He had two dunks off of assists, a layup off an offensive board, and an open ten foot jumper off of an assist. He missed two of his shots and had two of his shots blocked when he tried to do his own thing.
5. Dion needs to let the game come to him too. He threw the ball up shooting just 4-11. He had three assists and three steals; and, those influenced the game more than his shooting did. Two of his assists led to Austin Carr screaming. The team thrives off of that.
6. Love did a good job influencing the game through rebounding when he couldn’t score. Furthermore, he set off ball screens that kept the Cavs offense moving. However, his on ball screens just seemed a little off. He was setting them a tad too close to the ball handlers, which let Bulls defenders avoid them.
7. The Cavs defense is sort of a mess. The basic principle seems to be that if the players involved negotiating a pick can switch who they’re defending they should. If they can’t, then the man who is covering the screener hedges hard and hopes to recover to his man quickly. A back line defender should be rotating if necessary. If the pick is occurring in the corner, the Cavs are trapping and the closest man from the weak side rotates to the middle. The trapping and switching were both working “okay.”
When the Cavs bigs tried to hedge on a quick ball handler, they weren’t coming out hard enough to slow the dribble and ended up just back peddling until the handler had a semi-open look or the screener was wide open.
8. The Bulls are deep this season. Everyone on their bench is capable defensively; Doug McDermott was in a hunched stance the whole time he was on defense. The Bulls are going to be extra deep when Jimmy Butler is back.
9. Matty D had just four assists, but he is the perfect man to make the second pass to the open man because he’s good at predicting where the defense shifts when Love, LeBron, or Irving has the ball. It’s a no hesitation decision that gives whoever receives the pass an open shot or drive to the hoop.
10. The Cavs must have washed their hands with degreaser before the game. They ball only slipped out of their possession nine times resulting in nine points. Against the Mavericks, it slipped out 22 times resulting in 25 points.
11. Blatt seemed to have his regular season rotation nailed down. Dion comes out early in the first quarter and goes back in the game after a short rest to lead the second unit.
12. Shawn Marion looked like he was a little slow. His man was blowing by him anytime I focused in on him. He played 24 minutes and had no impact on the game. That’s scary. Mike Miller looked even more slow than Marion. He hunched his way onto the court for just eight minutes tonight.
13. Finally, after rereading my piece, I noticed I didn’t include LeBron enough. LeBron had 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. He got a lot of points by sprinting down the court after a rebound and getting fouled in transition. He set great screens and made sure to make the Bulls pay when they doubled him. It says a ton about the Cavs that LeBron can have a stat line like this and not steal the show.
*Kyrie bounced the ball very angrily when Blatt called a time out late in the fourth quarter. I’m not sure why he was so mad. It seemed like someone was not getting open or to their spot.
I wake up each morning and wonder if/ when Kevin Love will become disgruntled. I’ve been concerned about this since I saw him looking very grumpy as james jones tried to explain something to him between quarters in Brazil. Hopefully it never happens.
it’s not going to happen. We have him irving and leb for the next 5 years or so.
“leb” is not going to stick, Cols…
One note here: I was a bit skeptical about how many minutes Delly would get. But this game suggests Delly will get legit run. James Jones is buried on bench.
You must be following Cols on Twitter. Everyone who saw Delly last year knows he will get major minutes on any NBA team. He might become a starter; Dion is the ideal guy to have coming off the bench. This does not mean Delly is better than Dion, just that he is a better “glue player” to compliment LJ+KL+KI, whereas Dion is ideal as a guy firing away with the second team. The reason Dion is still starting is probably that coach does not want to hurt his feelings.
I agree on Delly. I like him a lot. The only question I had was whether Blatt would prefer a traditional guard rotation (with a backup PG) over a rotation that was shooter heavy, given that LBJ can serve the function of PG in lots of lineups. The latter situation is one in which Delly could lose minutes. But it doesn’t look like it will happen.
My view is that a coach needs to make the best of what he has, as opposed to using a system that needs players not available.
Obviously a coach should use the best with what he has – that is sort of a definitional statement. The challenge is when you have a deep roster that can pursue multiple strategies. The Cavs are in that situation, so it will be interesting to see how Blatt uses the roster.
Yep. And this team should maximize its offense. They can and will score at a much better clip than any team. No need to worry. Other teams will make less shots. And we will get all the rebounds. Going to be a lot of blowouts this year. Like. A ton.
Jason you make some very good/ solid pts—-we had a very difficult time keeping both rose and brooks in front of us –which their penetration to the basket opens a whole lot—-right now their depth is better than ours and so is their intensity. Cols I like ( sometimes your exuberance ) but if anyone thinks this is going to be a ” cakewalk ” to the finals/ n.b.a. championship is wrong –the good thing we have time to develop / look for possible help where needed —-haywood might still help whether playing or contract to get a player that… Read more »
Can’t take too much from this game as Butler was not there. He’s their best perimeter defender, and usually takes LBJ. Bulls are a serious threat. Guys like McDermott and Mirotic will improve as the year goes on. A second unit of Brooks, Heinrich, McDermott, Mirotic, and Gibson is scary good. As for the starters, I’d take a healthy Rose over Kyrie (who really looked bad on defense a lot tonight, poor fundamentals, still), and Butler over Dion narrowly. LBJ over whomever starts at SF for the Bulls. Love over Gasol. Andy over Noah narrowly, based on last night. A… Read more »
This is the first time I’ve had a chance to see the team, and I LOVE it! Only one game, but my big takeaways are: – Kyrie looks like a new man thanks to the confidence from this summer, and being able to share the weight of Cleveland with LeBron and Love. Kind of hoping for a 50-40-90 season from him. I’m a little concerned with how Rose was blowing by him. Hopefully things change in the regular season. – LeBron is coasting until the regular season, and still stuffs the stat sheet and is making sure everyone is getting… Read more »
Marion’s offensive game still hasn’t flashed, but he is a very heady player. His movement still benefits the team. He is also big enough to crash down from the weakside to chuck the roll man. He does that as well as anyone. It’s great that the Cavs can back up LeBron with someone who has similar size on the defensive end. But, yes, he hasn’t finished well in the preseason.
The Bulls are a talented and intense defensive team. They picked it up in the second half, and while we scored – it wasn’t easy. Starting line ups . . . which player from each matchup would you pick? Kyrie . . . . . . . . Rose Dion . . . . . . . . Heinrich (Butler) Lebron . . . . . . Dunleavy Love . . . . . . . . Gasol Varejao . . . . . . Noah Admittedly, Chicago was deep with guys like Gibson, Mirotic, McDermott, and others. Gibson was… Read more »
i will take butler and noah but keep our other 3. the bulls coach seems to love crushing it in the regular season and they might burnout over the playoffs. considering they have a similar injury history as our team, it might give the 2-8 seeded teams in the east something to play for.
I consider Kyrie/Rose to be pretty much a wash. We have big advantages with Love & Lebron, and I give Noah a slight edge over Andy. The danger with the Bulls is their defense and their depth. We all know transition baskets disappear deep in the playoffs, and if Thibs is smart with his lineups (questionable) he’ll use that depth throughout the season to keep his key players fresh in May. I think the biggest advantage the Bulls have is heart. They have some raging pitbulls on their side (Noah, Butler, Gibson) whose intensity at times can be tough to… Read more »
Ugh. Nope. It doesn’t matter who wins on Halloween. I’m sure the Bulls will win plenty of games in the regular season and then get smoked in the playoffs like they do every year. Can we please stop pretending that the cavs have a rival in the east. They don’t.
Must we make up teams that are supposedly rivals to LeBron every year?
Look at the history. In 2010 it as the Bulls. Smoked. In 2011 in was the Bulls and pacers. Smoked. In 2012-2014 it was the pacers. Smoked. Leb really
Has no rival in the east. Add love and irving and its blowouts throughout the playoffs. Only real worry is the thunder.
The way Irving “defended” Rose last night, I don’t consider it a wash. We’re still a banged-up Varejao (a likely occurrence) away from having serious problems getting stops. I know it’s preseason, but it’s still something that has to get fixed, and sooner rather than later.
My biggest fear for the Cavs is that they won’t be able to stop guards. Yes, Derrick Rose is probably better than most guards the Cavs will play, but Aaron Brooks is not and he got the shot he wanted nearly at will.
I’m also a little scared about the bench. Is it just me or did Marion look lost at times?
no question marion was lost. he and TT lost an uncontested rebound out of bounds. plus it appears that he is a tad slow and that can slow down his teammates. at times i wonder if kyrie saves his energy for the offensive set. i dont think it is too much to ask for engaged defense. kyrie is in an elite athlete (more so than delly). but delly engages and the look is not lost on my 6 year old even. he catches delly looking like a pit bull and kyrie cruising. his lack of effort when coupled with love’s… Read more »
every time cols714 posts i have to remind myself that not all exuberance is irrational. we do have the talent to back up most of his claims. my caution and tempered enthusiasm is more about being a long suffering cleveland fan. awaiting the wheels to somehow fall off. all this to say that i hope he is right. i will enjoy the season and reading/commenting here. and i dont think that cols intends to troll anyone. i hope whatever happened when 714cols came in it wasnt someone trying to troll a person they think trolls. does this make sense? off… Read more »
Cols is a troll simply because he doesn’t want to have any discussion past the point of him telling you that he is correct. Way too frequently does the comment section become The Cols Show, and discussion of his comments, instead of actual analysis of a basketball game.
And now I’ve fallen hard for the trap. Goddamnit.
I think in a preseason game people are going a bit easy on Rose, because they want him to stay healthy. It’s going to be tougher on him when things get real.
If it wasn’t obvious before, it is now. The bulls are no threat to this team.
Really??? What makes you say such a thing? Remember when Orlando was no threat to the Cavs? Remember in 1989 when the Bulls were also no threat? Remember when Lebron was no threat to leave in free agency? So instead of making the same outlandish statement every single time you post, try saying something different not related to the Cavs going 82-0 and Delly being the worst NBA player in the history of the NBA (because as of right now, Mike Miller, Shawn Marion, James Jones and Ray Allen ALL are worse than Delly and the latter 4 are ones… Read more »
What makes me say that? The fact that we have leb, love, and irving and surrounded tem with a very deep and talented bunch of players. This isn’t a cavs team with leb and mo Williams. Get a grip. The Bulls do not have enough talent to play with this cavs team.
Take a deep breath, Rick. This is the same person that told us Mike Miller, James Jones and Ray Allen would get minutes at PG while Delly got maybe 5 minutes a game off the bench. Here’s total minutes so far this preseason:
Delly: 164 minutes (27 MPG)
Miller: 77 min (13 MPG)
Jones: 28 min (7 MPG)
Allen: Not on team
Cols lives on a different plane of reality than the rest of us. Just let him be.
Cols is an enthusiast. I have no problem with that.
I do argue when he badraps Delly, but as far as predicting the Cavs will go 81-1, I say “you go, Cols!, I hope you are right”.
I’m pretty shocked that Cols doesn’t get paid the big bucks for his analysis when he can glean this much from a preseason game (and the second night of a back-to-back for the Bulls).
Rose is exciting to watch, and was unstoppable last night, but his game seems unrefined. How long can he just run straight at the basket? Kyrie on the other hand was pulling out every trick in his book and played OK defense. He had some nice pokeaways but was otherwise ineffective on that end.
how about that inbounds play blatt drew up that t.t slammed on ( remember last year we had trouble just getting the ball in—thank you M.B. )—the bulls are very deep and that is a concern if marion and miller’s games don’t step up —-dion needs to realize the pts will come BY NOT FORCING —- his passing is more electrifying than his shooting—-Love had an off game but was still a huge presence with his rebounding—-really like that little hook shot that andy has developed —he needs to stay healthy
Kevin Love might not have scored much himself, but he had a huge effect on the game. Andy did a tremendous job taking advantage of all the cutting lanes. Wild Thing’s finishing ability continues to be severely underrated. Many of those little shots are actually quite tough, and Andy hits them regularly. Kevin Love’s presence gave Andy space to have clean footwork on his hook shot(that thing is beautiful off his spin move). The Bulls always decide what they are going to live with defensively and it was Andy tonight. Preseason or not, Andy was the most destructive player on… Read more »
If Winnie the Pooh himself did that tattoo it’s not that bad considering that he’s got a thumb and no fingers.
Kyrie slammed the ball down because Tristan either wasn’t running the correct play or was running it too slowly. I was happy to see him show a little fire.
too much fire in a preseason. but a good fire nonetheless,
