Recap: Cavaliers 109, Pacers 97 (or, Go Fast, Play Defense)
2014-11-30The Cavs came into this game looking to continue the defensive trend, and they definitely followed through on that goal. They held the Pacers to 39.3% shooting, and they managed to have LaVoy Allen named the top performer for Indiana with 10 points and eight rebounds. That isn’t a typo, no one on that team could get hot. The Wine & Gold defense is turning into a legitimate game changer. The offense wasn’t bad either; Kevin Love put up 28 points making 9-13 shots to go along with ten rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Time to break it down.
First Quarter: The Cavs opened up the quarter with LeBron James setting a pick to free Love up to catch the ball and take a shot on the left side of the floor. Love nailed it and turned on his nitro tank. The rest of the team quickly jumped into the back of his efficient shooting and fast car that scored 14 points during a 20-6 Cavs run. At one point, the King hopped out of Love’s car to throw a crazy no look pass to Kyrie Irving by shouting,”hey, there’s an eagle in the rafters,” as a distraction. Then James decided he needed some money, so he happily accepted a charge from the Pacer’s Solomon hill.
Kyrie didn’t want to be a passenger the whole quarter so he did this:
The Cavs zoomed around much of the time creating shots before the Pacers set up their defense; however, Indiana managed to catch up at the end of the quarter, as Lou Amundson gave up two offensive boards that led to two easy LaVoy Allen layups. Allen also canned a wide open 16-footer. The Cavs didn’t see another basket for over four minutes at the end the quarter until LeBron finally nailed a shot with one second on the game clock. Cavs ended the quarter ahead, 29-21.
Second Quarter: I thought the Cavs had Cavs righted themselves early on in this quarter by poking at the ball the first few times the Pacers brought it down the floor, but I was wrong. The Wine & Gold slowed themselves down for some reason, and the offense didn’t come as easily. They weren’t really moving the ball but stayed in the game because Kyrie got Tristan Thompson two free throws and a basket to go along with his own nine points. Love’s nitro ran out, and he scored just four points instead of 16 in the quarter. LeBron was LaBrick but ended the action with a strong layup for an and-1 he didn’t complete to put the Cavs up by just 3, 52-49. The Pacers weren’t really as close as the score. They had six points off of two threes that were incredibly wide open because the Cavs defense rotated poorly.
Third Quarter: The Cavs took a time machine an hour back and were playing like it was the first quarter again to start the third. Love got the first touch in the opening minutes for the Good Guys and drained it. The King’s men then went on a 15-5 run that forced the Pacers to call a timeout three minutes into the quarter. TT was a cutting machine during this time. Look at this dunk! Solomon Hill also had a decent dunk where he drove through the Cavs defense, but LBJ negated it the next play down the court by willing himself through four guys for a layup. Then the King showed why he’s the top man in the NBA by making two more layups draped by multiple defenders. He disposed of them like they were pestering children. See here and here. The Pacers put up just 22 points and entered the fourth quarter losing big, 87-71.
Fourth Quarter: LeBron sat this quarter as Kyrie led the team onto the floor. The Uncle helped out his friend Joe Harris, by running a pick and roll with TT that black holed the Pacers to the middle. Tristan easily found Harris wide open when he received the rock rolling to the rim. Then Irving, aka the and-1 master, canned his second jump shot and-1 of the night. Love checked in for a two minute period to give TT an easy dunk pass, before he and Kyrie left the game with a half a quarter left and the team up by 18. The reserves entered and it became the Dion mid-range extravaganza. Dion shot two more and made one. Big Lou finally scored. Both teams chucked it up and played lazy defense in the remaining time as the Cavs won it easily.
Thoughts:
1. The Cavs offense didn’t feature a ton of whip it around the perimeter passes tonight. It was lots of early action, find the open man quick, and finish the play. It wasn’t mesmerizing the way the Spurs are, but it was efficient. The Cavs had just twenty assists, but they were passing. They were jetting it to get the ball up the court quickly before taking one or two dribbles into a great shot.
During the second quarter, the Cavs stopped getting down the floor, and this stunted the offense. It also seemed like they were having trouble just making shots when they would pass the ball around. James missed four of five. During garbage time, the second line was passing the ball around, which is great. It shows that there is an offense in place for when teams shut down quick options. Tonight, the team just didn’t need to utilize it.
2. The Pacers are an awesome rebounding team. They just constantly fight for offensive boards and beat Tristan and Love up in that aspect of the game. They ripped down 15 offensive boards. Ian Mahinmi had four alone. LaVoy Allen had three. Big T still grabbed four, but it’s just surprising seeing another big match him like that.
3. Tristan had a little trouble with David West. West scored his first eight points on TT.
4. The Cavs threes finally started to fall tonight, as they made 7-16. They still need to take more and not rely so much on Kyrie being able to make dribble up 25 footers. The Pacers made 7-22 from behind the arc, or 31.8%.
5. There’s a bench problem in Cleveland. The wood scored 16 points, but 15 of those came in the fourth quarter. They need to figure out a way to get production out of the bench men. Maybe, a trade is needed. I don’t know. The problem tonight exaggerated by Anderson Varejao not being available and TT starting.
6. I loved seeing TT in the starting lineup again. He has such great pick and roll chemistry with Irving. He knows how to get fouled or convert when he’s in that play with Mr. Dribbles. He can finish now too. Look at this big boy body bash.
7. Kyrie is turning into a defensive maniac. He’s fighting through screens like they’re wet paper bags. It’s mind blowing how fast he navigates them, and the Cavs defense is benefiting from it when they trap ball handlers. It’s so much less of a liability to hedge how they are when the guards move like the Flash Irving is.
8. Love is having issues defensively. Not only is he getting killed one-on-one, he is just not talking with people. He’ll switch onto a guy for too long at times. It happened a few times tonight. Shawn Marion would be trying to switch back onto his original man, and Love was not having it. Kevin must really not want to cover the big dudes.
Love also has trouble making smart rotations when he is forced to hedge up high. Sometimes, you don’t want to dart straight back to the screen setter, as they are already accounted for. This is especially true if the man who rotated to stop the screener was defending a player you’re now close to. Just go to whoever is closer. Tristan is getting really good at doing this.
Look at this video of a wide open CJ Miles three pointer. Love should have moved onto Scola, so Dion wouldn’t have to commit to him in order to stop a drive/shot. Love could have even darted to Miles to attempt to close out on the three. Standing there sort of perplexed was a bad move.
9. I can’t stand watching Lou Amundson. He always looks and moves like he’s a step behind, and he can’t secure any rebounds. It’s so frustrating. He was torched by Pacers player of the game LaVoy for six points at the end of the first quarter. Blatt should play Alex Kirk or Brendan Haywood instead.
10. Shawn Marion knows how to run the floor so well, but it’s starting to get frustrating seeing him miss a gimme shot every game. He’s going to lose a close one for the Cavs, and people will start to get angry the team didn’t try to find a more athletic floor sprinter.
11.Dion has officially lost it. I don’t think he took a single good shot this entire game. He’s constantly calling for the ball, and the guys on the second unit seem to actively freeze him out, since he shoots nearly every chance he gets. I nearly lost it in the fourth quarter during garbage time. He tossed an 18 footer up that he missed and then just sauntered down the floor to reach in on Hill. Come on, Dion. Grow up already. There’s a path for success on the team, and it avoids certain areas of the floor. Can you guess which areas?
12. This was a great defensive showing for the Cavs and this win showcased Love. Love needed this game; it was great to see him score with such ease and look comfortable playing again.
13.Kyrie had a double-double, but it was with points and rebounds. That surprised me given how good the Pacers are at rebounding.
14. LeBron set up the team at will and earned his fourth quarter rest by going into “I’m the best player on the floor” mode during the third quarter to put Cavs up by 16. Blatt didn’t really have to figure how to manage minutes this game, but I’ll take managed minutes however they come. James played 32 minutes and Love played 33. The Cavs are making progress one way or another every night now.
If Dion did get traded to a terrible team, I’d have him play point guard. He likes to pass a lot more than people give him credit. I think he’d be a better point guard than a 2 guard.
Right. A point guard that likes to shoot first, averages 2 assists per game and can’t finish at the rim. Sounds like a good idea.
Dion is best fit for a terrible team that will let him run around and do his thing scoring 20-30 a night on kobe-like shot numbers. I wish he could contain his game like a (younger) Nate Robinson and play effectively in spurts. If they do trade him it will lead to some revisionist thoughts of whether or not the Cavs could have packed him off to Minny instead of Bennett or Wiggins who may not be as talented right now but seem to be in more of a team-first mindset.
saw where cavs waived cherry and reclaimed a.j. price this could help the bench strength ( could this also be setting up a dion trade )
Yeah I think you are right. Cherry was fun but not productive, and I think as soon as delly is healthy dion gets shipped out for a big
Great write up, David…but you’re way off on Marion. He could not be a better deal. I think most of us expected him to play way below the level he has been playing at. He’s hitting threes at a decent clip and not chucking them unnecessarily, and he is still a clever defender. He’s our Shane Battier…invaluable. No one will get angry at him. Dion is going to be traded THIS YEAR, whether his trade value is high or isn’t. Someone will take him. He’s not a terrible contract, he’s clearly got tons of upside, and anyone who is half-way… Read more »
tv63—I was not trying to jump hard on dion but like you mentioned his body language leaves a lot to be desired ( I coach high school basketball and I preach mental toughness / positive body language )—–if he really does not want to be a cav —his best chance of being traded is NOT by pouting but with effort / skill level that will intice other teams to trade for him— AND if HE DOES RETURN TO THE DION we knew from last years stretch ( when kyrie was hurt ) I really DON’T want to trade him unless… Read more »
Nice game. Good stretches of consistent defensive pressure. I think the bench will improve as the year goes on. Joe Harris is a rookie and will improve as he gets his sea legs. I think Miller will get it together as the season goes on. Delly will return some day.
Dion has NOT officially lost it and as usual as predicted the criticism isn’t objective as it should be. It is absolutely fair to point out his shooting fg% is atrocious but it is irresponsible not to point out the number of passes went no where with this group of cartoon characters. Please writers, count the times he does pass and Kerplunk! &^% Amundson himself missed bunny lay-ups less than 3 feet from the basket and at one point 4 times consectively. So that’s Dion’s fault? This bench has Harris and Cherry who haven’t even had 1 year of NBA… Read more »
On second thought, he has “Lost it” that is his intensity and desire.
It’s not his fault that people aren’t hitting shots. His fault is directly related to the fg%, and this IS his fault. Not only does it hurt the team by taking TERRIBLE shots (no, 20 footers from the wing off the dribble isn’t a good shot), but it is taking away a better shot from somewhere else on the court, which undoubtedly is there. Also, by him taking bad shots and stalling the offense REPEATEDLY when he gets the ball, he’s hurting the ball movement of the offense. In addition to literally holding the ball and shooting a bad shot… Read more »
The only time that Dion get’s on the court-(Coach Blatt’s decision)is when the game doesn’t matter. Dion knows that, I know that, and you should know that. Watch the games!! Dion is a lot smarter than you give him credit. I’d be pissed off if I was him as well. Having LBJ and Kyrie – the two biggest ball hogs in the NBA, on your team, and the coach doesn’t say a damn thing to them if they shoot too much. Kyrie’s defense is an absolute joke and guess what, the coach doesn’t say a damn thing to him about… Read more »
Mike, maybe you’re not watching the games. You should go back and re-watch the three games that Dion started at the beginning of the year where he played with the starters. You should go back and re-watch all but two games where he had 6 and 8 assists. You should go back and watch every game except for the two against Denver where he actually managed to shoot a decent percentage. Starting two-guards or sixth men off the bench shouldn’t be firing away at a 37% clip. Kyrie is 46%, LBJ is 47%. Dion has taken 135 shots in 338… Read more »
blogs are great with a lot of insight—-yes our bench is a concern ( even blatt alluded to in post game comments )—-possibly when delly gets back and also Anderson / hopefulyl –the bench will improve but it still isn’t championship caliber——am sure griffin / front office are doing their homework when the trades are allowed to start ( can’t wait for that to begin and CTB will be lit up with ideas/ opinions ) one of those has to be dion ( am in agreement not to rush into it –(-give it to mid–late December ) but he is… Read more »
Great game all around tonight, and it’s been impressive to see both the offensive and defensive trends the last few games. LBJ is starting to look like the Bron of old, and playing with intensity and athleticism. He’s also starting to look more like he’s actually having some fun out there. Loved his (as David put it) “look there’s an eagle in the rafters” no-look pass to Kyrie. Kyrie is looking his best ever. His handle is ridiculous as always, his shot is silky-smooth, he’s energizing the break with his passing and he’s really improving on D and giving maximum… Read more »
And of course, hours after I posted this, the Cavs waived Will Cherry and re-signed AJ Price. Apologies, Nate.
There is a type in the banner.. Cavs won 109-97 not 107 I was surprised at the way we got to play in the first quarter. That go-go style works really well when we get rebounds and turnovers and, as David noted, we got beat up on the boards a little bit last night. To me, thats why the offense stalled in the 2nd quarter because Lou Amundson and TT were the only two bigs fighting for rebounds and more often than not they couldn’t secure one, much less throw a long outlet pass to start the offense. I agree… Read more »
The Cavs were favored by four points last night and its like Dion thinks its his personal responsibility to make sure the Cavs spot Indiana those points. If he going to not run the offense, chuck bricks and play shitty D then what’s his role on this team? The man’s already grown, we can’t raise him again. Meanwhile, on the bench, Mike Miller’s purpose seems to be Kyrie-whisperer during timeouts, Joe Harris’s mustache isn’t getting to shine and Super Delly is waiting in the wings to doff his Clark Kent togs and terrorize opposing PGs. Wouldn’t rather see those guys… Read more »
Joe Harris is shooting 32% from three. He’s not in a slump, he sucks. He was a second round pick who has no business seeing the court for any contender. I’m not a PER guy but his 1.7 PER is Bennett like and shows he does nothing except shoot threes which he’s not even good at. If he wasn’t white you would not have mentioned him, at least I’m forced to believe that because it makes a lot more sense then thinking he’s good enough to play for any team. He wouldn’t even be the 4th best guard for the… Read more »
I mentioned Joe Harris b/c he’s a guard that plays for the Cavs. One I’d rather see than Dion because what’s best for Dion is starting, while what’s best for the Cavs is a role player off the bench that plays D a works within the offensive system (Harris/Delly) or a guy that can knock down 3’s (Miller.) Dion is shooting 25.8% from three on the season. I think Waiters has a ton of talent and could shine given the right circumstance. He’s a valuable trade asset. Something this Cavs team is short on. Plus, he’s not friends with LeBron… Read more »
Miller is 25% fg% period. The bench is horrible and terribly young. Everyone forgets Harris and Cherry are rookies w/o 1 year under their belt. Everyone expects “lights out”? Last year’s bench was light years better with Delly, Dion and Andy so let’s keep than in mind and in perspective.
How do you know that Dion is not friends with LeBron? I’m concerned about that comment. I was wondering about that all season. I’ve found no article saying what you said. I’m a huge Dion fan and I think its a shame how he is being treated on this team. My wish is he gets traded to a decent team, starts, and kicks Kyrie’s ass when they meet.
Let me get this straight… if you had a wish, it would be for Dion to be traded to a decent team where he would start and kick Kyrie’s ass when they meet. THAT’S your wish? Not that Dion would actually learn how to be a team player and an integral part of a championship team in Cleveland?
Kyire’s in-flight rebound to fast break assist before he hit the ground was one of the better NBA plays this season in my opinion. That’s a play that only happens at this level. And boy, what a level he’s playing at this season. Definitely my favorite player in the league, and he seems to get better every night. I’m not worried about Marion missing a bunny. He makes up for it by forcing multiple turnovers a game through the kind of heady defense a veteran can muster. Dion, on the other hand, worries me. You could tell after the buzzer… Read more »
+1 on this Kevin. This was my first game watching back from Thanksgiving vacation and what a Kyrie performance! That play was un-freaking-believable! Kyrie definitely seems like he’s in the best shape of his life. He’s also really starting to learn how to play with these guys. With Love capable of throwing his TD passes, it seems like it’s inspired a bit of a “top this one” mentality between him, Kyrie and LBJ.
