Recap: Cavs 120, Lakers 105 (Or Cleveland 4, Los Angeles 0)
2015-02-09Los Angeles was built on persistence of vision. It’s all an illusion. A flaw in our narcissism of self-love that fits the desert oasis tight like a blood stained glove. LA is a mirage and so are the people. They contort themselves to fit the idea of LA. There were times I questioned if they were ever actually there in the first place. They just couldn’t have been real.
Cleveland and Los Angeles exist as direct opposites of one another in every imaginable way. Whatever is great in LA sucks in Cleveland and vice versa. The traffic in Cleveland is a breeze compared to the 405. The weather in Los Angeles is unbelievable and the humidity is nearly perfect unlike the extremes of the land of believe. The people of Cleveland are lauded for their manners and loyalty and the people of LA…Well, the weather is great. In a strange twist of fate, the roles of the Cavs and the Lakers franchises have been reversed. Two years ago no one would have believed that the Cavs would acquire a pair of all-stars in the summer of 2014 and that the Lakers would be turned down by every significant free agent they courted. While the Cavs outright tanked from 2010-2013, the Lakers have found themselves in tank mode after multiple off seasons of regrettable moves. Lakers fans genuinely thought that they had a good offseason. I have a bet with comedian Jason Rennebu (He’s Nick Swardson‘s Nick Swardson) that the Lakers won’t make the playoffs. I’ve blasted Doc Buss’s seeds for the past couple seasons, but could this all have been part of the script? When they handed Kobe that bananas extension they already knew that he’d never share the spotlight. After Dwight Howard left Hollywood Babylon for suburban Hades Houston they had to have known that no star in his prime would play with Kobe at this point. Rather than overpay free agents for years into the future to be screamed at in practice by Kobe, they overpaid their own this offseason. They picked up plus/minus minus Carlos Boozer on the cheap and hired Byron Scott. They took on Jeremy Lin’s awful contract. It’s like the plot of Major League without the threat of relocating. With each loss they could reveal another puzzle piece to Jeanie Buss’s centerfold from 20 years ago.
FIRST QUARTER
LeBron James hits the first basket of the game on a 7-foot jumper after grabbing an offensive rebound off of a J.R. Smith missed three. Former Herculoid Wayne Ellington scores the first Lakers points two possessions later off of a Robert Sacre assist. Kyrie Irving and LeBron throw away back to back possessions with sloppy passes. Kevin Love slams an alley oop dunk from Irving. Love’s movement was more fluid than against the Pacers. At the midway point in the quarter, Kyrie makes a layup through contact and hits the free throw to complete the three point play. Former Cav, Carlos Boozer checks in for Tarik Black and is greeted with boos from the Cleveland crowd. That’s right, Tarik Black is starting ahead of him. Boozer scores on the Lakers next possession. With two minutes remaining in the quarter, Kyrie finds Timofey Mozgov for another oop jam. Over the final two minutes, both teams play half-hearted defense and a combined 20 points are scored. CAVS 32-28
SECOND QUARTER
LeBron grabs a defensive rebound and finds Iman Shumpert for a three to start the second frame. On the following possession, Shumpert does the dealing and connects with Tristian Thompson for a dunk. Thompson then kicks the ball out to Love for an open three. On the play of the game, Kyrie delivers a rare inbound pass alley oop to Shumpert from 30 feet away as Carlos Boozer day dreams about what could have been if he never would have lied to a blind man.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpnCa6TBJd4
The Cavs offensive attack slows, and Tarik Black converts on back to back Lakers possessions cutting the Cavs lead to three and forcing Tyronn Lue David Blatt to call a time out. Mozilla checks in for Thompson and hits a jump hook off of a Love dime. Shumpert hammers a dunk off of an Irving assist. His off the ball movement is better than I expected and he plays harmonica. I miss Waiters a little less every game. With four minutes remaining in the half, the Kevin Love three-point montage begins. Ball movement flows like whiskey at the Rainbow Room and finds Love open on four consecutive possessions and he coverts all of them. James then finds Mozgov for another alley oop. CAVS 64-49
THIRD QUARTER
Love continues his offensive assault with his third jumper off of a Smith dime. On the next Cavs possession, Love’s three point pump fake gets Black off his feet and draws contact. He really is a master at getting the fish to bite. Love misses the first free throw and hits the follow two. Love then grabs the defensive rebound off of a Ryan Kelly misfire and delivers to LeBron for a three, pushing the Cavalier lead to 20. James scores on the following three possessions, capped off by a triple. Irving then joins the three point parade and hits a pair himself. Love ends the quarter with another pair of threes. Ellington responds with a buzzer beating three to end the third stanza. CAVS 96-79
FOURTH QUARTER
I was honestly surprised that the bench zoo crew squad didn’t start the quarter. Irving scores the first points of the quarter a minute and a half in on a lay up after some sloppy play by both squads. Irving then grabs a defense board and goes coast to coast, drawing a foul from Jeremy Lin. He hits both free throws. Kyrie delivers an alley oop to Thompson as the Cavs hit their magic number of 102. Two possession later they wash, rinse and repeat for another buddy ball oop. Irving pulls the string on Austin Carr’s back and hits a three from deep in The Q. If you played a drinking game during Cavaliers broadcasts to Austin Carr’s catchphrases, all involved would brown out at a minimum and someone choking on their own bile in their sleep would be in play. The Cavs push the lead to a game high 25 points midway through the quarter. Delly, Shumpert and Joe Harris hit a troika of threes and there’s a James Jones sighting on the floor, zoo crew victory cigar time.
BOO
LeBron had another six turnover game…The Lakers are going to tank their way to a top five pick in this draft.
YAY
Kevin Love played like the Kevin Love we gave up Wiggins for. He scored 32 points on 18 shots and went a peligroso seven for eight from down town…The offense flowed and there was little iso ball. Of the Cavs 45 field goals, 31 were assisted…Kyrie was phenomenal again with 28 points on just 14 shots and had 10 dimes and just one turnover…LeBron played just 30 minutes and still flirted with a triple double totaling 22 points, 10 boards and 8 assists…The Cavs big three were the big three tonight. They combined for 82 points, 24 rebounds, and 21 assists…Mozgov snarled blocked four shots and altered many more…Shumpert had his best game as a Cavalier. As great as Smith has been in the starting lineup, ideally they will reverse rolls once Shumpert’s stamina is fully back…Speaking of Smith he played 34 minutes and only put up 4 shots, he also delivered four assists…Ignore the page view spam noise. This team is in on Blatt. They were up three when he called that time out in the second quarter. After the timely TO they went on a 10-2 run. The roster as a whole played unselfish basketball. They continually looked for the best shot for the team…Angeleno natives are actually pretty solid folks. It’s the transplants and the idea of LA that’s evil. Below is Artie Vegas, perhaps my favorite Angeleno. It’s like “The Kramer” portrait panhandling from a stage.
Cavs up to #4 in Stein’s Power Rankings… #6 in Hollinger’s
#MovinOnUp
Not that power rankings mean anything, but it’s pretty amazing the turnaround this team has had since the “fire Blatt” and “blow up the team” media blitz a month ago. What’s even better is the fact that we’re doing this without Kevin Love being the scoring monster we know he can be. He’s been great at everything else that matters… rebounding and passing, and he’s also been better on defense. But simply put, he’s a guy that could easily put up 30 points in 2 out of every 5 or 6 of our games, and he hasn’t done that yet.… Read more »
Could be right. Then we will have to Cols saying “I was right” for the next decade! Yikes!
He’ll say it with a smile. I’ll smile when I hear it. As far as I’m concerned, a very small price to pay.
Great read Cory! Always appreciate the views on LA, especially since I still find myself mired in the culture of this city on the daily… It’s actually so much fun to be here during the Lakers current malaise. Even though I enjoy going to the occasional Laker game at Staples, it still gets so onerous being smack dab in the middle of entitled Laker fans, so I get kind of gleeful to hear them complain about things like Kobe’s contract, Swaggy P’s attitude, Grumpy being grumpy and argue over whether or not the purple and gold should tank to get… Read more »
Thanks guy. I didn’t know I was writing the recap until midnight or so and I had no notes. I would have loved to put more time into this one. I used to get my hair cut at Legend’s Barber shop on Fairfax and would go back and forth with the baked out Lakers fans the whole time. The owner Goose Davis is actually from Youngstown also. Most sports talk is terrible. One of my regrets is that I didn’t stick with it. LA sports talk is hilariously bad, but they give the public what they want. Maybe it’s a… Read more »
My number one complaint about living in LA is Laker Fans. Worse than traffic. People in my office still believe that Kevin Love AND Lebron will come to LA. They just can’t understand how there are some people who don’t like it here. They also can’t imagine a world in which not everyone who likes basketball likes Kobe. Watching Jimmy Buss run them into the ground is kind of hilarious.
The Buss kids hate each other, and mostly did not inherit the old mans smarts. They will be worse than Dolan of the Knicks. BTW, how did Dolan not get fined for the recent fiasco? A day after Chris Paul gets $25k (which he richly deserved). The new Commish doesn’t look like he is tuff enough for the job.
First time poster, but I read every post on CtB. I just had to finally chime in. Is anyone else as confused as I am about this whole tweet fiasco? First of all, it seems like Love is finally making strides in his defensive game. Second, he does seem to genuinely want to play for the Cavs and a winning team. While I think its silly for any of us to expect to understand what is actually occurring between James and Love, if James indeed intended to light a fire under Love, was that really necessary? He seems to be… Read more »
I think the story is making a mountain out of a mole hill. I had no problems with what LBJ said, and I’m pretty sure that LBJ has said the same thing again and again to Love, which is “don’t flinch, take your shots!” Also, my guess is that LBJ knows that he’s been going isolation too much… I think the reason why is that he had to carry the scoring/alpha dog burden with the Heat. Now back the Cavs, I think he’s regaining his assist game, which people criticized him for in Miami, which was stupid to begin with.… Read more »
The timing is bad I agree. KLove has sacrificed more than anyone else in the Big Three, and its just that he’s had a few bad games, not that he’s trying to fit-out or whatever the hell (jockspeak). Love is still obviously figuring it out and trying to adjust. In the meantime he has kept his head down and on the grindstone, playing with a bad back and knee and whatever else. What he needs is a pat on the back, not some passive-aggressive exhibitionist ‘leadership’ spanking on social media. In Jason Lloyd’s final thoughts on the Laker’s game, he… Read more »
The tweet might have been aimed at the public, about the perception of KL. LeBron is like the Pope, he works in mysterious ways.
@KingJames: I like u guys a lot(Media) but don’t try and make a story cause it looks good. If I have a problem with a teammate or anyone I’ll say to….
@KingJames: their face and not over social media. That’s corny and wack! So good try again my friends(Media), I still love you guys.
Lebron can be so odd, as was mentioned in a post by someone on here before…
I think LBJ (like many pro athletes and other famous people) sometimes gets a little too cute on social media. I’m sure this will lead to the inevitable “I’m shutting things down on my social media for the playoff run” tweet (probably shortly after the ASB). I think he did the same thing last year with the Heat if I’m not mistaken…
It’s just more filler and pablum for the media to dissect… I’m sure LBJ and KLove are having their own conversations and I’m sure it’ll be all good…
Honestly man, I really don’t mean to complain. Past 14 games, this is as good as the team has ever looked, one could argue in the history of the franchise. And Lebron is by far the greatest athlete the franchise, and possibly the city of Cleveland, has ever seen. But he needs to be a better leader. Stand up for you coaches and team mates in the public’s eye, and do it just because they’re your team mates and coaches. They don’t have to be your good buddies. He has done so little to defend Blatt and Love when they… Read more »
You might be right about best ever. The contender is just before the Ron Harper trade.
GARNETT right now/ he is a warrior—which is what you need especially come playoff time/ and hopefully that would wear off—what is his relationship with LeBron like —-if we want to be greedy yes –go for both—GARNETT AND ALLEN— with that said I can see the clippers making a run for him especially with BLAKE having shoulder surgery
it’d be worth having garnett on the team just to have him rub off a bit on KLove. he’d bring so much fire and brimstone to the locker room, and help shore up that bunker mentality they’ll need in the playoffs. I doubt he’d ever play with LeBron though, especially after how much shade he gave to Ray for chasing rings in Miami
Infrequent poster but avid follower of CtB. Great recap Cory and great blog. I especially liked how the current excitement and past misfortunes of the Cavs were combined into one memorable sentence (below); not only do we have a very bright future, but we’re exorcising demons along the way!
“On the play of the game, Kyrie delivers a rare inbound pass alley oop to Shumpert from 30 feet away as Carlos Boozer day dreams about what could have been if he never would have lied to a blind man”
Thanks for the feedback. By all mean, comment. Boozer has a fascinating career arc. Second round gem, who out plays his contract. The team tries to give him more money for it with an understanding that he’ll stay. He bolts and becomes the biggest villain in Cleveland for a couple years. In Utah, he and Deron Williams make it to the Western Conference Finals in a brutally tough conference. He signs with Chicago and his game goes with his hair line. He becomes a shell of his former self, and puts shoe polish on his head. He’s finally amnestied and… Read more »
Screw Carlos Boozer. #NeverForget
Completely AGREE…
That line…
“On the play of the game, Kyrie delivers a rare inbound pass alley oop to Shumpert from 30 feet away as Carlos Boozer day dreams about what could have been if he never would have lied to a blind man.”
…covered both my favorite play of the game and my favorite line of the recap!
That play (for the first time since he joined the CAVs) really showed off how athletic Shumpert is. His head was almost level with the rim! Plus he had 4 steals! Bodes well for the Cavs, as athleticism has lately been in short supply.
Also the way things are going David Griffin is looking like a very talented GM. Amazing he brought in THREE significant additions while losing little (though I always hoped Dion would fit, it is hard to imagine a better trade scenario given the Cavs situation. Kudos to DG!
Agree. However, I am worried about how they can keep everyone, plus more next year. Hopefully, DG will show some real talent then!
Hypothetical: Would you rather have Garnett or Ray Allen right now. I think I’d go with Garnett. I think a back up big is more important right now vs a shooter who can’t play D. Plus Garnett had been playing the entire year, whereas Allen has been livin la vida loca in South Beach. Garnett would also bring some additional toughness or trash talk. I don’t think they have to chose one or the other and highly doubt either signs with the Cavs.
Get both. But the answer is Ray Allen
100% Garnett. A 3 and no D guy is not gonna help us win anything. Very doubtful Garnett would ever come here though
Garnett is not coming here. He’s going to the Clippers or retiring. That being said, Garnett in a heartbeat.
Garnett and it’s not that close. That being said, it’s probably Clippers or retirement.
Agreed…. Garnett would be awesome to have for 10 minutes a game… doubt he’d ever come.
While they’re both past their primes… I could see Ray Ray fitting in better than KG on this team… even though the Cavs could put KG’s talents to better use…
My prediction would be that BOTH of them wind up on the Clips with Doc given the disarray of that team right now. It’s EXACTLY the sort of move I could see Doc the GM convincing Ballmer of pulling off…
KG is such an A–hole I would hate to have him on the Cavs. What a dirt ball.
LeBron and Kyrie need to get Love involved in the chest bumping. Seriously. I think he might feel left out!
Glad to see him erupt for 32 points. I really think it’s been largely mental for Love this year. He’s a fantastic shooter and he has struggled this year. He’s missed a lot of open looks. If he can stop letting whatever it is that is bother him, bother him, then I really think we’ll see more of 32/10 Kevin Love.
That could make this team unbeatable.
I agree with the chest bumping. Lebron and Kyrie get along so well (which is great!) but KLove is becoming an integral part of this team nd should be rewarded with chest bumps from the best player in the world instead of cryptic tweets. Social media is the devil. As for his game today, he was in the zone. I still think he needs some rest to get his back right. He is such a good passer, running some sets where he passes out of the post to a spot up irving or cutting james is probably the last piece… Read more »
100%. Exactly my hope that it’s a piece of the offense that Blatt is waiting for some reason to deploy until the rest of it (defense, chemistry, LBJ buying in but still feeling like he’s the man) has all jelled.
Why can’t Love just go up to them? NO one is stopping him. An invite isn’t needed.
Does anybody have any idea what FIT-OUT actually means?
I appreciate LBJ’s sentiments in his tweet — and there has seemed to be something off about Kevin Love’s demeanor/body-language all year — but I still believe that we could be an even more devastating offensive juggernaut if we used Love more in the post. Let him back down smaller PF’s and either use footwork to score or hit the cutter/open man. In other words, I don’t think it’s all on Love.
I think “Fit-Out” just means to be yourself and play like you play and let the “fit” that you have with the team come only from how good you are. All of that is in contrast to using how good you are in a particular fashion that fits within the scheme of the game. Regardless of what it actually means, the salve that will fix Love is get 6-8 pts a game on good position in the lane on (slow) transition baskets, and making 2-3 three-pointers per game off of open looks. The former should come before the latter and… Read more »
Great point at the end, CRSN, about Hubie. I think what’s happening now is that LBJ and Kyrie are realizing that getting Love the ball helps their whole offense. I think Love has started to be more assertive and demand the ball in the post/elbow. I agree worldbfree… I think it’s been more on Kyrie and LBJ to make an intentional effort to feed Love consistently. I loved the sequence where LBJ called the same play twice in a row to get Love open looks while he was hot. I think that was a pivotal moment in yesterday’s game. I… Read more »
I think that KL can be a huge contributor, but you have to design things to maximize his potential. LJ and KI don’t need any particular set up, they can dominate anywhere, anytime, whatever happens. But this is not such a bad thing; if you work hard to set KL up to score 30 early, the other teams will have to make their key defense to stop this, which will allow the other guys to cash in easy baskets.
was watching some of okc higjlights last night and there is dion standing behind the 3 pt line clapping / screaming for the ball as Durant shoots/ makes a 3 —-familiar pose that we were used to viewing —-wonder how long they grow tired of that —–nate agree with ellington I would prefer the cavs go after davis instead of sacre—with shump or j.r. starting it may come down to game by game—team/ player match ups as far as starting
He had 16pt, fg%50% 3 rebs 3 assists. Won’t get tired of that. So far they like him. Why do people on here want to keep trashing a former Cav player? It’s like people just love and can’t wait to see this guy fail by these kind of comments. Don’t get why some can’t move on.
Great recap. And good insight into the state of the Lakers. They’re a mess
Thanks guy. I used to tear that franchise to shreds daily. It was actually tough to keep it PG.
I agree with Tom, I enjoyed the recap… especially your accurate assessment of Houston being a “suburban Hades” ahahaha!!!
Fun recap, Cory. I love your LA Stories. Tarik Black trying to guard Kevin Love was comical. He simply could not stop leaving him open; it was like Tristan Thompson from last year. “Must collapse to the paint… Must collapse to the paint..” It almost made me pity Byron Scott. Almost. Great job of hitting open J’s by K-Love. I’m not sure going off against the Lakers actually means anything, other than a nice confidence boost for Love, which is a good enough takeaway for me. I think they have two guys I’d want: Wayne Ellington, and maybe Robert Sacre… Read more »
Haha. The Byron Scott thing is funny.
It’s true. I want to say the last three teams he’s coached have the lowest defensive efficiency in the league (or opponents FG %). I didn’t start the recap until 3:20 in the AM though and I had no notes. Did to want to misquote it.
Ed Davis and Wayne. Half of the appeal of having a the ability to play Dana Carvey’s “party on Wayne,” after he hits free throws.
I actually think in addition to Wayne, that Jordan Clarkson is bringing a lot to this Laker team lately… I still prefer either Jordan Hill or Ed Davis over Sacre though…
I pick Sacre because Davis’ contract is so good, that the Lakers are probably going to want a first rounder for him. Otherwise, they can probably get more for him next summer by signing him to a better deal or facilitating a sign-and-trade.
Jordan Hill’s contract is just stupid, and he’d want more playing time. The 5th big has to be good enough to play 15 minutes without completely sucking, be able to deliver hard fouls, be ok with getting DNPs, and not make too much money. That’s why I picked Sacre.
Agree with that with respect to contract situations… was more talking about talent level. Seen enough of Sacre over last couple years here in LA that I wouldn’t want him on the Cavs…
Missed this one. Good write-up.
Even if you loved Dion’s talent potential you can tell the chemistry change with him gone has been great for the Cavs. Someone doesn’t have to be outspoken to darken the mood of the locker room.
Plus the fact that Shumpert and Smith are better players than him.
Agree with Cols. I never would have predicted this. Good demonstration of the hidden intangibles when thinking about who is the better player.
How do YOU know that Dion darken the mood of the locker room ? With Lebron in charge? I doubt it. All that same kind of stories that JR brought ‘darkness” to the Knicks. That some how is a lie? and your accusation that Dion .brought darkness? C’mon? You underestimate the value of a badly needed defense that Mosgov has brought this team. Dion was traded for an OKC pick WHICH brought Mosgov here. Things were going pretty damn good before Andy got hurt including Dion’s role. Smith was NEVER the ultimate focus for the trade. He has been the… Read more »
It’s clear from subtle clues during interviews, body language on the court, etc. Plus he leaves, they get better. Helps that he blasted the Cavs players and/or Coaching as he walked out the door to confirm those suspicions.. Go study psychology if you don’t understand that you don’t need words to affect mood.
Also I didn’t say anything about JR. JR did bring darkness to the Knicks. He’ll admit that.
Best team in the nba.
The amazing thing is that I don’t think they’ve peaked.
I don’t think they have either… Shump is getting closer to the force he can be, Moz needs to work on holding onto the ball, Kyrie needs to work on getting the ball to Moz above his waist and still think they’ll add one or two more pieces to the mix before long who will also need to be integrated… But they scored 120 and it looked like it could’ve been 150 if they’d wanted to… Great D in the middle quarters, everyone sharing the ball (JR had as many assists as shot attempts… when does that EVER happen?), and… Read more »
They gave half hearted effort against a team that started Sacre, Black, Clarkson, Ellington and Hill. Those guys are maybe 7th or 8th guys at best on a competitive team and put up 120 with plenty of highlight plays. I’m too tired to check, but I want to say there were 7 oops.
The Cavs are going to be vicious if they play to their potential. I wanna say that I recapped the Bulls game and predicted that they’d be getting title contender hype in two weeks from the national media. It’s happening.
I really like to keep JR in the starting 5. They keep him in Check and he has played very good. That bullet pass with one arm to klove was cool. I dont know why its always in discussion, that the “6th man” has to be an offensive player. I really like bringing shump in, he is not bad offensively but we all know he has been brought here for defense. So you are doing the opposite of the whole league. Bring in the defensive pitbull as 6th man and the defense gets better. Better defense -> better offense automatically.… Read more »
I get zigging while everyone else zags, but the bench could use the offensive fire power that Smith can provide and Shump can give max effort on the opponents best wing to save LeBron’s energy. Either way, both will play significant minutes when the playoffs start and the rotation goes down to 8 guys.
Someone made the point in a previous thread that JR wouldn’t get the same open looks with the 2nd unit, which I tend to agree. I think that Shumpert is better off the dribble, and as such, can be more effective on the 2nd unite, which encourages him to be aggressive offensively. I was in the category of Cory’s view, but have come around to see that JR’s chemistry with the 1st stringers is fantastic and it would kinda of be a “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” Judging JR by just the stats would be a mistake in… Read more »
The chemistry is there, and he’s not the ball stopper he was advertised to be. He made selfless moves last night. It really doesn’t matter come playoff time. Both will play with the first unit and both will get 30 minutes per game. Could just come down to the match ups.
Totally agree Cory, I noticed the minutes distribution as well yesterday. Shump and TT are getting 30mpg, which they should. Delly getting 15-20, and the rest sprinkled in with everybody else.
As for the garbage time unit, really liked how Blatt decided to go with Jones and Harris… couldn’t defend, but at least the unit made some shots at the end to put the game away.
This will never happen, but inho, Love is the perfect offense off the bench for THIS team. Surround him with 4 defensive guys and the offense can run through him. Even if he’s starting, have him play with Thompson, Shump and Delly and even Marion is good enough D against most second units and he’ll destroy that same second team offensively. It would get him more touches he sacrifices when Lebron and Kyrie are on the floor together.
I think you make an important point Joey, which is that we never see Love without LBJ or Kyrie… which to me is perplexing. I wish we could see what Love would do as the sole “big 3” guy out there.
So far, we’ve seen LBJ with the 2nd unit, and they do well it seems. I actually think Love would be better because he’s a post player who can pass.
That is not crazy at all. The second unit would be like the Timberwolves’s former first unit.
