Got another chance to chat in studio on ESPN Radio Dayton with my friend Mark Neal.
This was a fun one – talking about the big men of old, the modern point guard, what LeBron needs to do to win MVP (hint: dominating Steph Curry on Natl TV was step 1), and the value of tanking/draft/rookies. Â We took calls too. Â Nate called in to defend my honor after a previous caller took exception to me saying that rookies almost never become difference makers on good teams.
If you are a fan of The Buckeyes, Reds, Browns, or Bengals, Dayton Sports Scene with Mark Neal is one of the best sports radio shows I’ve come across. Â And of course every Thursday between 5 and 6 I bring the Cavs to the forefront.
You can listen live, download podcasts, and there are even apps for iphone and android.

I don’t want to say he is overhyped because I don’t think that is fair (it’s not like he asked to be hyped) but because he was so fast and quick and entertaining to watch, people made him out to be more than he ever was. And it’s not like he’s been a top 50 player this year . . . the Bulls’ problem is not having any decent point guard, not that they don’t have Derrick Rose. It’s like how Lakers fans… Read more »

The last rookie that I think really made a championship difference was Tim Duncan in 99.
Yeah, I actually went back and looked at the Spurs blueprint for sustained excellence and it looks something like this: First, fire R.C. Buford and Gregg Popovich. Second, have owner who fired R.C. Buford and Gregg Popovich immediately sell the team. Third, have new owner rehire R.C. Buford and Gregg Popovich. Fourth, have really good team already including future first ballot HOF center. Fifth, have freak bad season where the two best players suffer devastating injuries, but just for that season. Sixth, win draft lottery from the third slot and get Tim Duncan in a draft in which the second… Read more »

Great stuff Tom! Really enjoyed the old style vs. new style NBA part of the conversation…
