Recap: Bulls 88, Cavs 83 (Or, it was like a win in the sense that the Cavs lost. Wait, that’s not right.)
2010-12-08Overview: With Daniel Gibson and Antawn Jamison in the starting lineup, Manny Harris in the rotation, and Joey Graham and Ramon Sessions both getting DNP-CDs, the Cavaliers actually managed to compete with the Chicago Bulls before getting outscored 28-15 in the fourth quarter and losing by a final score of 88-83. Derrick Rose led all scorers with 29 points.
Cavs-Related Bullets:
– Well, that certainly sucked less than it usually does. Byron Scott had the idea to play his best players a lot more than his worst players, and that ended up working pretty well for some reason. The offense didn’t look great, but keep in mind that the Bulls are an elite defensive unit — every time the Cavs tried to set up anything intricate with screens, the Bulls would shoot right through the screens, get up in the ballhandler’s face, and generally mess up the set. The Cavs were able to get some decent looks by putting four three-point shooters on the floor at once and keeping the ball moving, but they were never really able to get into the teeth of the defense. When a team shoots 30 three-pointers and 18 free throws in one game, it means they were having trouble getting inside, but the offense was decent enough.
– The two guys who really flourished offensively with the new lineup were Varejao and Parker. I actually really liked how Parker looked at the three — he’s so much slower than every other starting two in the league, and isn’t particularly effective as a three. But with Mo and Gibson keeping the pressure on the defense and moving the ball, Parker has a chance to get more open looks at three and put the ball on the floor when the defense isn’t paying attention. When he can do that, he’s not bad — he’s an extremely intelligent player when he can actually manage to get a step on the defense, and he showed that with a beautiful slip pass to Andy on a pick-and-roll during crunch time.
– Varejao also got more chances to finish plays, but he was also playing like a man possessed. I don’t know what it is about Noah, but he brought something out in Andy. He drilled some mid-range jumpers, almost killed himself for loose balls, and put a freaking dream shake on Noah successfully at least twice. When Andy has confidence, he’s a surprisingly skilled basketball player — it’s just very easy for him to lose that confidence in his skills.
– Jamison had a decent enough night. He’s a volume shooter. That’s what he does at this point in his career. A few nice mid-range jumpers, a few threes, some shots inside, and some forced shots from all areas as well. Jamison is pretty much Jamison. By the way, he went 3-7 from the line, and the Cavs could have REALLY used those four points.
– Manny Harris — hmm. He’s long, he’s athletic, he has three-point range, and he does seem to make things happen. On the other hand, he seems to have gone to the Ramon Sessions school of “driving to the rim with no real plan.” I’d like to see him stay in the rotation over Graham, if only because he might be able to help the team out on defense.
– Okay, let’s talk about the defense. It wasn’t horrible! A lot of that was because Sessions, an atrocious defender, didn’t play, and Hickson, who has been destroying the defense for years, only got 9 minutes of burn (about 2 minutes after he checked in, Taj Gibson got an easy dunk.) Graham, who tries defensively but is horribly unathletic, didn’t play. Parker matched up against a 3 instead of a two. Boobie, who is probably the best perimeter defender on the team, got major minutes. This poop is not rocket science. My caveat here is that the Bulls are not a good offensive team — they settle for mid-range jumpers, have no idea what to do with Boozer at the moment, and don’t seem to have any plays outside of running a double-screen for Rose. Still, the Cavs were actually getting up on guys, contesting shots, and forcing the Bulls to take shots they didn’t want. That’s a very, very big deal. Hopefully it continues.
– The end of the game was pretty simple: The Bulls have Derrick Rose, and the Cavs don’t. At the end of the game, Rose seemed to say “instead of setting up a play or looking for a teammate, why don’t I just blow by Mo Williams and get to the basket? That’s very easy for me.” It was, and he was able to make the key plays at the stretch while the Cavs had to rely on outside shots. That was the difference. Tough loss, but certainly a promising one. Until next time.
Erick – the weather was horrendous here that day and apparently someone forgot to tell the city to get the snow-trucks ready, go figure… It took me 2 1/2 hrs to get home after leaving work at 4:30pm and it’s only a 32mile drive…
WTF!
Didn’t see the game but after reading online all the info, it seems like Scott has had it with JJ – not sure what to make of that. At this point I say let the young kids play and see where it goes… But keep Jamison in there for him to hopefully attract a team.
“Varejao also got more chances to finish plays, but he was also playing like a man possessed. I don’t know what it is about Noah, but he brought something out in Andy.”
It’s the fluffy hair duel! :D
@Erik
I think part, if not all, of the disappointing fan support can be blamed on the weather. Apparently it was snowing pretty hard in the Cleveland area.
@Nupe
I like Manny, but he is what he is. He’s been reckless in his drives sense college, so I’m reluctant to think he can get it together. Therefore, I think his upside is limited. If he got a coach who could channel his recklessness into calculated drives, maybe he could be a decent player.
Bulls fan here. First look at a Cavs game this year, and with the way the game started, I thought something very serious had happened to fan support. The arena had the acoustics of an empty airplane hangar; it’s easy to hear Thibs on the broadcast, but never so clearly. Fun to see the Clevelanders in the 4th, though… the game had a good energy about it, even though it was badly played. I was astonished at the Cav shot selection. I mean… just dreadful. I think the game could have gone to the Cavs if Gibson hadn’t let fly… Read more »
I’m actually encouraged by this game. Yes it’s a loss, but it was a loss to one of the better teams. If we played like this consistently, we would be a 7th/8th seed. Our best players are finally getting the most playing time – not rocket science but glad we made that move. The only question is will Jamison’s move to the starting line-up and additional minutes hurt JJ’s ‘development’? Honestly at this point I don’t care! JJ has worked hard this off-season but still doesn’t seem to have really made significant advances in living up to his potential. Maybe… Read more »
So Hickson seems to be falling out of the rotation. Anyone else concerned with that? On a team that’s going nowhere you should be playing your young players to see if they develop and you have something for the future. It’s why someone like Joey Graham should never play for a middling team that clearly needs to rebuild. We held onto Hickson because we assumed he could develop into something. Now when its time for him to develop he seems to be regressing and getting less and less PT. Scott has a reputation for not playing the youngsters. Looks like… Read more »
The end of the game was on Scott. You HAVE to put someone else on Rose, or double team him to get the ball out of his hands when he’s burned your defender (Williams) three straight possessions. Bring Harris off the bench or switch Boobie to Rose. The Cavs gave this away by bad defense (and bad defensive coaching) and give up threes by Boobie.
But Parker is just atrociously decent. He is not a great defender, but I wouldnt really call him a bad one. He is extremely smart and thats what keeps him as a starter. He is another guy a contending team will look for. A guy who can shoot 400 from the 3 off the bench
The Bulls are an elite defensive team? The Cavs got a lot of clean looks, they just honestly don’t have (m)any very good shooters. And with this new rotation, their bench is pretty much nonexistent scoring wise. I’d hardly call a team that lets Varejao put up 17 elite. Or a team that lets grandpa Jamison bend over Boozer for however many before benching Boozer and ending up with 21. Jamison puts up 30+ if Boozer plays the entire game. Hell, the entire starting lineup was in double figures. The Bulls are maybe average at best defensively. Also, there is… Read more »
Rich, your first comment was hilarious.
John, I miss your bullets about the other team. Would have liked to have seen a little more about Rose. Also, your ambivalence toward Parker is one of the more interesting stories to follow this year.
I feel bad for Mo Williams. They are asking him to be the guy who sets up the rest of the team, but at the same time he has to get at least 15 shots up and be the leading scorer. He is no lebron james. This is to much for him to do, but alas, on a team with so littel talent, he has to try. People would look at Mo so differently if he got to play as a 6th man on a great team. He would absolutely be anotehr Jamal Crawford or Jason Terry. Hopefully someone else… Read more »
Well, at least it looked like they were trying this game. That has to count for something.
Yeah, this was much much better. If we hadn’t compiled such an epic streak of crappiness the last five games, we might have had enough confidence to make one or two more shots down the stretch and steal this game.
The Bulls played awful. Noah and Boozer are still confused as to who gets to be the alpha.
9-34 from Gibson and Williams, and we don’t lose by 20? That is indeed a consolation prize.
Jamison looked pretty good tonight. If the Cavs can trick another team into giving up something of value for him at the deadline, this season is a success.
By the way, Manny Harris is a rotation player, which is pretty good considering he was undrafted. If he puts on some muscle, maybe he can be the Cavs’ version of Wes Matthews.
With every jumper Jamison makes and every rebound he snags, I have more and more hope someone will be willing to take him off of our hands at the deadline.
Hickson had his most effective game in weeks. Really helped the team out by staying on the bench.
