BREAKING NEWS: Kyrie Irving Out 3-4 Months with Fractured Kneecap [Updated with Kyrie Response]
2015-06-05Kyrie Irving has a fractured left kneecap and has been ruled out for the rest of the NBA Finals, the Cavaliers announced Friday. He limped off the floor midway through overtime of Game 1 and left the arena on crutches.
According to the team, Kyrie will have surgery and is officially out for 3-4 months, putting his status for the start of next season in jeopardy. The injury was discovered in an MRI taken earlier today.
Kyrie looked good following the eight day break between the Eastern Conference Finals and The Finals, recording 23 points, six assists, four steals and a game-saving block on Stephen Curry in the final seconds of regulation. But he went down midway through overtime with an injury to his already ailing knee.

Sincerest wishes to Kyrie for a speedy recovery from all of us at C:tB.
CAVS IN 6!! WE IZ GON GET IH!!!!!!!
Might take seven.
saw the movie when it 1st came out / just finished reading the book —UNBROKEN —-the cavs are a bunch of LOUIE ZAMPERINI “S — “-KNOCKED DOWN 9 TIMES GET UP 10 “—–Blatt might want to show the team the movie before tomorrow’s nights game —-GO CAVS !!!
Btw Blake Griffin came back from the same injury as Kyrie quite strongly
What a transformation to this blog. I’m glad the Cavs players aren’t wimpy whiners like you all.
We’re working through it. There’s a lot of determination in today’s comments. By tomorrow we’ll have reached Churchillian resolve.
Easy on the generalizations, U-Dog… Not all of us are whining…

Crazy one from @EliasSports: Cavs first team EVER with TWO 1,000-point scorers (Love & Kyrie) combining to play one or fewer games in Finals
@ChrisBHaynes: Damon Jones guarding players on wing at practice. When it was LeBron James’ turn, he shoved Jones out the way and went in for the slam.
If Lebron did that, we can only imagine what Delly did to Jones. We probably don’t want to know.
Can the city of Cleveland put a curse on Lil B?
I was severely depressed yesterday about the whole Irving situation. Now I’m just slightly depressed. So that’s an improvement I guess?!?!?
At least we will have good defense for the remainder of the series. Maybe Mike Miller can get hot in a game? Maybe JR can get hot in another or two? And DELLY for another?
We will overcoooommmeeee! The best part about this season so far is the taste Kyrie and kevin love and Tt got of the big stage. They will take next year by storm whether we win or not. Pressure during the regular season will mean nothing to them. That is exciting
That’s assuming we resign everyone and they stay healthy. That’s a huge problem for this team and the NBA. How many seasons has Varejao had season ending injuries now? Kyrie has proved to be injury prone and KLove to a certain extent. I actually think GS was a good match up if we are healthy. Not the same guarantee next year. LeBron is a year older. We shall see.
Well nothing is guaranteed even with guys who aren’t injury prone. No use fretting about it. We will have a better bench, klove and Tristan will both be back…fewer minutes needed for the regular season should result in better overall health by playoff time. All I am saying is the guys we wondered about whether they would perform under pressure have exceeded expectations in this playoff run. That’s scary for the rest of the east.
Yeah… We will see how this team looks next season. I think of it says intact we have a good shot. Hopefully they draft well and can bring in someone to help off the bench.
The Cavs still have a decent chance, but the margin for error is way less: MD + JRS + IS have to start having excellent games, first of all by shutting down CT + SC.
Where is the outrage about the phantom traveling call on TM in the last minute of reg? That would have probably been the game, and KI would not have gotten hurt.
Pretty sure the phantom traveling outrage was expressed on the recap thread…
And in the live thread. The league said yesterday the call was correct, but I still don’t see it. Gather + jump stop = either foot can be the pivot foot for the move that follows; it’s player’s choice.
The league can say whatever it wants, that was not traveling. They called it on Mozgov because he is a big, clumsy looking 7 footer. That does not get whistled for any other player on the court. I normally don’t mention the refs, since calls on either teams in the NBA are so arbitrary, but that was really a critical time for such a bogus call.
Agreed. He’s big with big feet. Players slightly move their pivot foot all the time.
In Golden State nothing is earned and everything is given.
Cleveland is going to have to play out of their minds. I have faith in them and you should to Cleveland. You should be apologizing on how you treated LeBron when he left Yes I said it! Maybe you will have some luck for the city of Cleveland and bring home a championship! Burning Jerseys that was so immature!
The whole “burning jerseys” narrative is so freaking tired. That was literally a small group of people who were not representative of Cleveland, NEOhio or the Cavalier fanbase as a whole in any way. Just another attempt by the media and the world to rag on Cleveland.
Clearly you’re not from Cleveland…
Yeah because Cleveland was the first city to burn a players jersey?!?!?! It was like one person and I believe Miami did the same thing when LeBron left, but for some reason that isn’t a storyline. Get off my lawn you ignorant ass!!!!
It’s just a flesh wound…
I love it. GSW, “We’ll bite your legs off!!”
The nonsensical comments from some people here that the Cavs coaching staff has any blame at all for this situation is INFURIATING. NONE OF US have ANY idea what Kyrie said to Blatt and coaching staff. Nor do we have ANY IDEA if the injury is related to the tendinitis. In fact, Dr. James Andrew advised Kyrie that the tendinitis did not increase his chances of more serious injury. Kyrie was back to his old self in G1, and for all we know he felt very little pain and was begging Blatt to play him. To blame Blatt or the… Read more »
I had the Cavs in 4 too, but didn’t tell anybody. If you can change it to 5, I can too. GO CAVS!
alright then it sounds like we are ” ALL IN “—” THE LAWN MOWER IS A HUMMIN—-LET’S RIDE “
Everyone has counted us out but screw it. I still think we can win Sunday and I still think we can win in 7! JR and Shump must play better, but they will. Everytime they have been called to step it up this postseason they have. Lebron must get them involved though. Can’t fold to the strategy the Warriors are trying to play him with. We are Believeland and we must believe we can win. fivethirtyeight.com gives us less than a 13% chance to win the series? So be it, let them doubt us, it will only make the championship… Read more »
You know what? Fuck it. I’m with you guys. Are these odds any worse than we’ve faced for 50 years? Cavs in 6.
NOW we’re talkin! There are worse positions to be in than in the finals down 2 of your best players. Like at home on vacation already. What’s the use in being down about it? It can’t hurt any worse if we cheer them til the end…let’s act as if we can win this thing. That’s what Lebron’s giving everyone in the locker room a dose of. Plus…Mt. Mozgov ERUPTED like never before in last night’s game. We can do this. There is no better way to break the streak of bad luck and poor performance than to beat the worst… Read more »
Get ready for DEL “LAVA” DOVA!!!
I have a solution. The NBA should suspend this series until next October.
I’m not a super big fan of metal music… but this is one of the GREATEST THINGS I’VE EVER HEARD!!!!!
It’s a great metal tribute — and a useful pronunciation guide!
But seriously, the Cavs should bring it to the Q for game 3. They could add some Delly metalheads and get in Curry’s head a bit.
”I understand the moment that I’m in, and I’m not too much worried about the game – I’m worried about the moment,” maintained James. “I’m happy with the moment. I’m excited to be in this moment once again, and I’m going to stay strong for my team, no matter who is or is not in the lineup.”
Game 2 tips off on Sunday night – 8 p.m. ET. And anyone who’s watched this team all season should know that Cleveland’s “Big One” will be ready when it does.

Greetings CtB… sorry for the disappearance, but had to put in some work on the 3rd shift for a couple of months. wanted to drop some good vibrations to the crew here. The game 1 loss was on me… I was going to predict a Cavs’ 4 game sweep, but didn’t have to courage to do so. My mistake… I’ll go on the record for the Cavs in 6 now. To me, the biggest difference between the Cavs and Warriors (Kyrie’s injury notwithstanding) was the fact that the Cavs have the ultimate post threat in LBJ, whereas the Warriors do… Read more »

They will start to hang that on LeBron, because they’re empty heads who have to fill time. ESPN would be doing a public service if they had only one channel going when there aren’t live events to show.
These injuries are just surreal it’s like I’m playing the what if game , what if we won in regulation, we would be up 1-0 and have a real chance and Kyrie wouldn’t get injured. This feeling sucks way more than KLove because it’s in the finals like damnit man ,why can’t things go the Cavs way for once. If we do win it this year somehow I will be crying tears of joy in that moment and to just shut the critics up, what a dream that would be !
Delly putting in extra work after the Kyrie news broke…
That is one ugly shot.
As long as it goes in, it doesn’t matter…
Man. Real bummer. Looks as if his dad’s body language spoke for the reality. I hope but know that it’s time just to enjoy whatever happens next. Sending prayers. But know time will heal his ailments.
IF we don’t win it this year it WILL make it that much sweeter when ( not if ) we WIN IT NEXT YEAR —DON’T GIVE UP —DON’T EVER GIVE UP !!!
This is 2007 all over again. LeBron + role players vs. a clinical deathsquad. Still, got to go down swinging. What a hell of a season this has been. Couldn’t be prouder of these guys, and I’m exciting to see how they fight the odds. We will come back stronger for this next year

@LILBTHEBASEDGOD: The cavs players should have been real like iman shumpert and really keep it honest who got the swag Lil B now they lost Irving – Lil B
“F” Lil B too!
This guy is a piece of trash. Whoever celebrates in the physical ailments of others deserves a piano wire neckless.
Well I wouldn’t go that far. May he never find the prize in cereal boxes.
I’m gonna curse Lil B to be a C-list rapper with no artistic or popular success, who only gets his 15 minutes of fame because of some coincidences in the NBA.
Oh wait…
I’d love to teach every pre-schooler in America the stupid “look at em flickin that wrist” dance and see what the idiot “Based God” tries to do to curse schoolchildren… What an effing joke and waste of space on the planet…
For some reason he makes me think of DeShawn Stevenson…
Per Pelton – “When Irving missed two games during the Eastern Conference finals, Blatt went to his backup, Matthew Dellavedova — who responded with 28 points in two Cavaliers wins. That’s the easy choice here, but I’m not sure it’s the best one. The bolder alternative would be moving J.R. Smith back into the starting lineup and playing without a traditional point guard. Putting Smith, Iman Shumpert and LeBron James together on the perimeter gives Cleveland its best possible defensive matchups against the Warriors: Shumpert on Stephen Curry, Smith on Klay Thompson and LeBron James on Harrison Barnes. At the… Read more »
I like that alot.
Pelton really missed the point. Who cares who starts? Both are playing heavy minutes regardless.
Kevin Pelton has some bold suggestions as to what Cleveland can do. Haven’t read the whole thing but he suggests starting JR with Shump in the back court and continue to bring Delly off the bench with Joe Harris. Hey, why not? Gives Harris some valuable experience going into next season. I might play Marion a 5-10 minutes too. “F” the Dubs and their baby faced assassin and their loud-mouth smelly PF.
I saw some video replays on NBA-TV that made it pretty clear that the injury likely occurred when Thompson bumped knees with Kyrie. Based on that, it may not have had anything to do with the previous knee problem.
Get well, Kyrie. Thanks for the most enjoyable season ever!
To the rest of the Cavs players: You keep playing. I’ll keep rooting. It’s a tremendous feat to get this far. You’ve done amazing things. Surely, you have two weeks of “all-out” in you.
About Kyrie I think he needs to change his game a little bit. Maybe he needs to learn how to use screens better to get his jumpshot more easily like Chris Paul but the constant driving the ball into a crowded lane will soon make him Rose part 2.
Seriously? This is the ultimate in false equivalency.
Is just my opinion…..don’t get mad at me lol
I’m not mad. It’s just wrong. This wasn’t a ligament tear. None of the times he hurt himself with the tendinitis or with the kneecap had anything to do with drives. In addition, he is already a great shooter in the manner you describe.
Dont you think hes a ligament tear just waiting to happen though at some point in his career? The way he drives and falls when he lands.
I remember at least twice in the regular season when he fell and clutched one of his knees in pain.
I love the guy and i love his game and there is no other point guard i would rather watch but the way he plays is not conducive to a healthy acl for his entire career. Just a matter of when. I hope I’m wrong but time will tell.
His ligaments are super strong — that’s why his bone fractured instead of getting a sprain.
This playoff run by Golden State is the most fortunate I can remember. These whole playoffs have been really awful, everyone is getting hurt, and Durant and Westbrook didn’t even play due to injuries.
This is a gritty Cavs team, and I think they can win a game. But 2 games max, this series is over.
LeBron, TT, JJ, Delly, Moz, Shump and JR is what’s left to battle against the extremely deep rotation of the Warriors.
At this point all I can is that no more Cavs players get injured.
Or get ready for Perk and Harris. (cop dram-edy?)
Sigh.
I’m contemplating what Stephen Hawking said recently about parallel universes where Zayn Malik could still be in One Direction, and applying it to Cleveland sports.
Here Love and Kyrie are healthy and the Cavs are up 1-0 in the Finals, threatening to become the first team to go 16-0 in the postseason.
The Indians have never been owned by the Dolans.
And to stave off bankruptcy, Art Modell sold the Browns to a group led by Bernie Kosar.
There is a parallel universe out there where I’m Cleveland’s savior and about to win my sixth straight NbA title with the Cavs……as Dellys backup.
Also, i like that bernie kozar browns world. You do know he was part of Carmen policy and lerner’s ownership group? They used him to garner public support andthen dumped him after they won the bid.
That’s right. They dumped Bernie so fast I’d forgotten all about that.
I’ve still got the Cavs!
Amen. Some of the Cavs best playoff lineups were with Delly. More on this later, but the Cavs problem last night was that they didn’t play Delly enough.
I think I agree, Nate.
It’s going to be time for Bad Boys 2.0
If Delly fouls out of game 2, I’m ok with that.
>It’s going to be time for Bad Boys 2.0
I wouldn’t complain about it at all if the Cavs decided to go that route. But being the Bad Boys is a way of life. You can’t just turn it on in the finals after not doing it all season.
The only guys on our team who could maybe pull it off right now are J.R. and Perk.
He’s gotta bring it on D and not be afraid to take that floater in the lane when they run pick and roll so the bigs stay honest. That is, if they set more than one screen for him. He didn’t play well, but he only had nine minutes. He can be a difference maker with his heady play. I just hope his lack of quickness isn’t a liability in bigger minutes
Did Lil B put a curse on Kyrie’s knee cap?
Eff Lil B… Someone should hire an actual voodoo witch to put a curse on that moron… Oh wait, he’s already called Lil B and his music is awful…
I’m gonna purchase Lil B urinal cakes.
So if we win though it becomes THE GREATEST SPORTS STORY IN THE HISTORY OF EVERYTHING
Think about it. If we win then LBJ is INSTANTLY on par with Jordan. No question.
They did it for 2 1/2 games against the Hawks without Kyrie. I know the Hawks aren’t the Warriors, but still, the Cavs have shown they can play at a high level. I’m not ready to wave the white flag.
The drive, the fumble, the decision, the wild thing, the Olynyk, the knee cap….
Sounds like a list of Seinfeld episodes

DELLAVADOVA, DELLAVADOVA… DELLY DELLY DELLY DELLY DELLAVADOVA! DELLY TREY! DELLY TREY!!!
@CPoTweetsStuff: So LeBron is going to try and win a title with discarded Knicks, two useless Heat players, and an Australian. What a time to be alive.
Delly played really bad yesterday and the Cavs don’t have another PG, why I’m saying this?? I’m hoping LeBron doesn’t try to play the full 48 and gets injured too.
It will really suck to see big mouth green and the rest of the Warriors raise the trophy at the Q.
This has turn into a nightmare…….
:(
Delly sucked last night and I don’t expect it to get any better. They will upgrade at backup PG next year.
The Wombat will rise.
I agree, the Cavs need another playmaker besides Kyrie and Lebron. And they need Blatt and the coaching staff to improve the Cavs offense. The Cavs can’t continue with the ISO’s all night offense by Kyrie and Lebron.
They need more player movement on their offense.
That is something I agree with 100%. Right now they have to work so so hard to score. Has to be incredibly taxing on James and obviously irving.
And JR ? How did he play? These guys will play better next game.
I love Delly and he’s been great for this team, considering that he makes no money and was basically a “walk on”. However, against the all star guards of GSW he is obviously overmatched. But you can’t have vets like Marion, Miller, Jones, Verajao, and Perkins and still afford a backup PG who can jump in and cover the MVP. It’s just too much to ask to survive the loss of your all star power forward and all star PG. Hopefully in the off season people will suggest actual players to replace Delly instead of the mythical player that is… Read more »
Kyrie Instagram response…

The Kid is a great player and teammate. Let’s hope he and Kevin can come back at full strength next year.
I totally bummed out, but let’s look at the big picture. How many of us expected the Cavs to win it all this year? I was thinking getting to the Finals and losing. We have a lot to build on – Kyrie and KLove got their first playoff experience. KLove proved that he can fit in with this team, and can also contribute on D. Kyrie proved to be a warrior, and also that he can play D. TT turned into a monster. JR/Schump added a ton of swag to this team. They all seem to like each other. Let’s… Read more »
I expected us to win it all. And we would’ve if Irving or Love was healthy. But losing both is too much.
But yeah, overall a supremely awesome season and one that we should be proud of!
Agreed – we’re better than GS with Irving and Love.
Don’t get mad Nate, but barring an injury to Curry and Green, this is it for the Cavs. They have no bench and
LBJ can’t play 48 straight minutes
It wouldn’t matter what kind of bench we had. Unless we had other max players on the bench…
Me thinks, depth is a real issue with this team going forward in the future considering Irving and Love’s injury history. Not sure how we can address other than finding a gem in the draft since our cap will pretty much be maxed out from this summer onwards.
How? Olynyk is going to pull out Love’s arm again? The only issue is that 2/3 of the Big Three got injured. There’s no team that can survive losing 2 of their top 3 players for the Finals.
No amount of depth can overcome that.
The good news is that the entire team should be back next year minus Marion and probably some other end of bench guys. HOpefully they get a more dynamic backup PG and backup SF.
Not saying they will get injured again, just looking at their histories, eg Love having played over 70 games in only 4/7 seasons. My point being exactly what you said, which is I think we need to find better backups at the pg and possibly sf position as insurance in case one or both went down again. Forgot about Haywood, maybe Griff can pull off another JR, Shump, Moz type trade using Haywood’s exception. Think finding gems in later parts of draft will also be crucial moving forward for this team. Who knows maybe the injury will inspire this team… Read more »
Draft + Haywood trade + one or two veteran max contracts. Hopefully the can add two or three rotation players.
I meant veteran minimum contracts…
I have faith, just not the blind kind. i have faith they guys will give it everything they have. i have faith LBJ will be brilliant, Delly will squeeze every Milligram of talent from his body, and that TT will fight for every rebound in the gym. I have faith the staff will have an excellent game plan. I have faith the Q will be rocking and hopefull for games 3 and 4. But I also have faith in gravity, because no matter how much faith I have that I can float in the air by willpower alone, it never… Read more »
Okay, that made me laugh out loud.
Even Sunshine Bear would turn grumpy and sad with this news. The Big Three is no more. No team can overcome losing two star players.
• Irving limited Stephen Curry to 1-of-5 shooting and four points on six plays in Game 1. Curry shot 8-of-14 for 19 points on 19 plays against all other defenders in the half-court offense.
— ESPN Stats & Information
Great stat. This is what I was saying to my Warrior-fan friends. Kyrie arguably had the better game and brought it on defense. I hope he heals properly so he can take it to this league next year.
You can’t spell Uncle Drew without D.
As fate would have it, my CAVS blue alternate should arrive today. Number 2.
Currently wearing mine. With pride!!!!
Andy wasn’t much of a loss though. His defense was bad and you kind of knew it was coming at some point. But Love and Irving. With those two guys we win the Finals.
There’s always next year.
Exactly, I just hope Kevin, JR, Shumpert and the majority of the roster stays the same so that the Cavs can their rematch next year.
IDK, they could sure use AV for 10-15 minutes to spell TT, but yeah, it’s tough losing two All-Stars…
Andy always starts slow. He’s been pretty effective when healthy.
Which is 30 games a year. I’m so sick of Andy sitting on the bench and getting paid. Sould’ve cut him 5 years ago.
Sucks. Our injury luck was terrible. Two of our top 3 players are now out.
Kyrie proved he is a Warrior. All we can hope is for him to not rush back his return. #getwellsoonuncledrew :)
Kyrie proved he is a Cavalier… ;)
Not surprising. Really a black eye on the Cavs staff though. They have got to prevent this, I hope they accept some responsibility.
Now we need a minor miracle.
I would say a HUGE miracle lol
Really u think this has to do with his tendonitis? I have no knowledge about sports injuries, just curious. Does make me wonder if this team will ever be fully healthy a whole season since our second and third best players seem to have a fairly consistent repeated pattern of injuries.
Wait? What?! What did the staff do to break his knee?
Exactly. WHen has tendonitis caused a kneecap fracture?
I don’t know the answer to this question, but did his tendonitis have anything to do with the fracture? It seems an incredible coincidence, but I’m not sure they’re related. Also, it’s unclear from the video whether he bumped knees with Klay. Is that what happened?!
Might the medical staff have misdiagnosed the tendonitis? Is that possible? If not, it’s a pretty ridiculous coincidence that he broke the kneecap of the knee with tendonitis.
James Andrews too? I doubt it.
Kyrie looked like his awesome regular-season self last night — 100% better than he did against the Hawks a week earlier. Consistent with tendinitis that was much improved. I really doubt this is on the medical staff.
I hope you’re right. The word was always that the tendonitis posed no risk of further injury — it was simply a matter of playing through pain. It’s a troubling coincidence for me.
The staff allowed him to play too long on an already injured knee. This new injury wasn’t the result of contact, he just put too much torque on the joint and it gave out. My understanding of this (and I speak only as the parent of an athlete who has dealt with injuries, not as a doctor) is that stress fractures aren’t as sudden as they might seem, that the structures of a joint begin to fail a bit before the catastrophic collapse. The staff’s position was that there was some pain but it was safe to play. In hindsight… Read more »
I would need to see some real evidence before I throw that accusation around.
Seems I was wrong and the fracture was likely caused by a collision with Thompson. This is very hard to see in the replays, but that’s probably why the injury was so devastating, because the kneecap absorbed the full force of the blow with almost no recoil.
If so, this is a freak injury. Man, what bad luck.
I had posted earlier that the injury might be due to a collision with Thompson, but I’ve not found anything since then other than the NBA-TV show that even hinted that it was due to contact. I’m wondering if there’s more news on what caused the fracture.
The doc ESPN had on called it a “deceleration injury.” Also said it could be midseason before Kyrie is playing on a regular basis.
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=espn:13020676
Yeah I watched NBATV today and they showed the replay – there was some contact of the knees with Klay Thompson. Not a big collision – so this just must be a freak accident, where the contact was the right force at the right location at the right time (or substitute wrong for right). I’ve followed the NBA for a long time and can’t think of another player who has fractured his kneecap. Bewildered.
Deflating, utterly deflating. God damn
