Cavs Sign Sasha Kaun to 2-Year Deal
2015-08-23The Cavaliers off-season bench bolstering locked in one of its final pieces Saturday with the signing of Sasha Kaun to a two-year deal.
The 6-11 Kaun was the 56th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Seattle Supersonics before his rights were dealt to the Cavs for cash. Kaun, though, never donned the wine and gold choosing, instead, to play professionally in his native Russia for Euroleague power CSKA Moscow. Last season, Kaun averaged career highs with 9.9 points and 4.5 rebounds while playing 20.1 minutes per game.
The deal is reported to be a straight-up two-year deal, without player or team options for the second year. While this isn’t a big needle pushing move for the Cavs, Kaun does give the team an active, defensive-minded big with an impressive 7-6 wingspan who is either at or entering his prime. No one projects Kaun to be a star, but if he can be a rotational NBA big — something Cavs GM David Griffin has been quoted as saying he, at least, believes — the team is much better positioned to deal with injuries along their front line than they were a year ago. Kaun could also help the Cavs manage the minutes of Anderson Varejao as he returns from an Achilles injury.
This move reunites Kaun with Timofey Mozgov, his teammate on the Russian National Team, and Cavs head coach David Blatt, who coached the two big men as part of Russia’s 2012 bronze medal winning team.
I’ve talked quite a bit about Kaun here and here.
Now, all eyes are on Tristan Thompson, Rich Paul and the Cavs to get a deal done.
I’d rather have Varejao in the Perkins role or for certain matchup situations that work in our favor. Rolling with the russians at center seems much more sustainable as both are younger stronger defensively.
Evil Genius is funny. I nominate him for CtBlogger of the Year.
Kaun will be in the Perkins role, very very limited action.
I agree. He will be brought in to slam Kelly Olynyk through the hoop, deadpan “If he dies, he dies” then go back to the bench for the rest of the season.
Is this the longest euro-stash of all time? I mean damn — 2008! That is the long game. Improved depth should mean everybody is fresher and healthier come playoff time. Though of course there’s no accounting for Olynyk-like moments of madness.
It’s interesting that on paper, the Cavs seem to have the least depth at small forward. But on the court, the rotation should give time to Shump and JR at small forward in addition to Jefferson and from time to time JFJ. This should suffice in further lowering Lebron’s minutes and giving him off nights.
Deepest positions on paper seem to be point guard and center. Best of health for the Cavs in the 2015-2016 campaign.
Sure seems like Griff is a very good/exceptional GM….solid decisions all the way.
Good signing. Just need him to bolster and already good group.
What do you think are the five best Cavs rosters of all-time?
2008-2009
Miracle Team
2014-2015
1992-1993
2006-2007
I think 2015-2016 will be #1 after this season
Whattya think?
This is a good line up. I believe 5thirty8 ranked that 08-09 team top ten of all time in the NBA. And I agree next year will be the best Cavs roster ever.
Agree on the coming season’s roster heading for No. 1.
I would plug in the 1988-89 team ahead of the Miracle team and the 2007 team. They didn’t have a lot of depth, but they were tearing up the league until Mahorn gave Price a concussion. Still won 57 games.
Price, Daugherty, Nance, Harper and Mike Sanders with Hot Rod and Ehlo off the bench was a strong and versatile rotation.
(They also had a guy named Phil Hubbard who played a little now and then…)
1988-89 and 1992-93 were the only two seasons that the Cavs started three All-Stars (Price, Daugherty, Nance both years). So it would be hard to argue against including both of those teams in the top five. The 2006-07 and last year’s team both got to the Finals, so you’d have to include them. I’d probably go 2008-09 over the Miracle team to round out the top 5, until this coming year of course.
If it all breaks right, I’m hoping the answer to this question by 2020 is the 2015-16 team through 2019-20 team…
And the Cavs should have three All-Stars this year (LBJ, Kyrie, KLove), the MVP (LBJ), two good candidates for sixth man (TT, Mo), and two all-NBA defensive candidates (Shump and Moz).
1. 2015-2016
2. 2014-2015
3-5. Any other roster with LeBron. Ferry did a horrible job with the rest of the roster but LeBron is that freaking good.
Wouldn’t blame it more on Paxson then Ferry?
KAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNN!!!!
