Podcast Episode 74: Villains, etc.
2015-09-11https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/podcast-episode-74-villains
Tom Pestak, EvilGenius and I swept the cobwebs out of the ole podcast booth and fired up the gear for our first pod of the fall. We discussed the #CavsRank villains series: what surprised us and what still gives us nightmares. (If you didn’t catch the final installment yesterday, the No. 1 villain was “Miami” Lebron, a controversial choice for sure). The three of us also talked Tristan Thompson, Cedi Osman, the Cavs training camp roster, Tom’s upcoming tryouts for the Stepien Competitors professional softball team, and even a little football.
You can listen on above, on SoundCloud, or on iTunes. Enjoy.
Truly one of the greats of the game… RIP Moses
In the ’83 finals, despite lingering tendinitis in his knees, he averaged 25.8 and 18.
Oh no! Moses Malone died, just a a couple weeks after Darryl Dawkins.
Malone was to offensive rebounds what Nolan Ryan was to strikeouts, each in a league of his own.
Most offensive rebounds, NBA history:
1. Moses Malone, 6,731
2. Robert Paris, 4,598
That’s +46% for Malone.
Robert PARISH. Grrr……
It’s been a rough NBA summer. Moses might be the most underappreciated NBA player of all time.
The ’83 Sixers were one of the best NBA teams ever. Also maybe not fully appreciated because they didn’t sustain it past that season. But they were on track to win 70 until Malone’s knees started barking the final month of the season. And they went 12-1 in the playoffs.
Through four-fifths of the season, that Sixers team had a 57-9 record (.863), which projects to 71 wins. But they went 8-8 down the stretch as Moses sat out or played limited minutes because of his knees.
A nice appreciation by J.A. Adande:

More rebounds than Dwight and AL Jefferson combined.
IMAN IS THE ONLY ONE WHO ” CAN HOLD HIS OWN ” WITH LEBRON AS FAR AS PHYSIQUE —WOW THE MAN IS ” TOTALLY CARVED “
SETTLE DOWN, NOMAD. SETTLE DOWN.
I’m watching Turkey vs France… I’d like to see Cedi be a little more aggressive. He’s taken one shot in the half. It doesn’t help when he US point guard (on Turkey) is a bit of a ball hog/chucker.
HAHA!!! That PG for Turkey is definitely a chucker/ball hog! Cedi might also be fatigued, thus the lack of aggressiveness. I believe he’s averaging the most mpg on the team, and possibly most in the tournament. Turkey’s offense is garbage without him.
Cedi needs another year in Europe. CLF was right. He has the requisite skills. His body needs to develop. NBA players are all quicker and stronger, but he’s only 20 and he’ll get there.
I’d prefer to see him get a lot of playing time, have success in Europe, and grow in confidence – over watching him sit and be dominated when he gets in at garbage time here.
@imanshumpert: ‘Twas a great day to perfect the craft. Almost time to make another run at the reason I play this.
No Moz, Delly, Jones or TT.
I’m betting that TT sees this picture and signs quickly. But if not, let’s be patient with TT. Odds are, we’ll see him in camp and all will be well. Yes, patience is a virtue.
Man I am so happy Mo Williams is back.
I just really like that guy
I do too, Tom. I do too.
He sure looks calm and confident and ready to step in and start at PG for a while.
I wonder if Richard Jefferson will teach LeBron how to shave his head. Dude has quite a dome
It almost seems like someone photoshopped Kauns head into the background.
It will be interesting to note whether his head always looks photoshopped after he’s been here a while.
You are right! There is no body there!
@RealGM: Kevin Love Could Be Ready For Opening Night: http://t.co/N8GyBHGQbP
I could see Tristan even getting under Lebron’s skin by now…..
Great job guys.
I hope you guys are going to do a nice write up about the TT situation. That’s been a pretty big deal.
Hope you didn’t miss it last night.. Kevin Love on Late Night & he looks healthy, energetic. Nice interview. This is the only link I have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n-Sf1dzQck
Anyone watch any Eurobasketball? I’m catching up on Cedi Osman and former Cavalier Semi Erden from last weeks Italy vs. Turkey. France plays Turkey tomorrow. Cedi vs. Tony Parker!!!
I didn’t realize Ilysova played for Turkey?
Not a great start for Cedi… A missed 3 and a missed lay up.
I wonder if having Blatt as a coach helps us improve our international scouting?
This is a Ilysova/Bellanelli showdown.
HAHA… nice Arch. I’m actually watching Turkey vs. Iceland.
OK, so here are my thoughts on Cedi Osman after seeing him play: 1. He’s a natural at basketball. He has great instincts in scoring and passing the ball. He’s not a ball hog by any means, plays within himself and the team concept. He makes really good cuts to get open and score, he’s a playmaker passing the ball. His jump shot looks great… he can spot up and pull up. He made a really nifty steal with his anticipation and quick hands. He simply knows the game. 2. The biggest question is whether he can handle NBA physicality/athleticism.… Read more »
Why do you hate the Christmas and Porter picks? What would you have done at those spots?
Did the Cavs just get one second round pick from the Pacers for Christmas? That might be a lower pick than used to get him. The Pacers appear sold; they signed him to a multi year contract.
Instead of Christmas, I would’ve rather had ConnaughTRON or Mighty Joe Young, both of whom were available at the Christmas pick. Young was voted steal of the draft by his peers. ConnaughTRON was voted 2nd best athlete by his peers, only behind Justin Anderson, and 2nd best shooter by his peers, only behind Devin Booker. Either guy would’ve been far better, in my opinion, than Christmas. With the Pointer pick, I would’ve gone with Dawson of MSU or JP Tokoto of UNC. Both of them come from 2 of the best college programs in the country, and performed well in… Read more »
Sorry Raoul, didn’t answer your first question HAHA! I hated the Christmas pick because he wasn’t a good athlete, and wasn’t a good shooter. Both Young and ConnaughTRON are two of the best college 3pt shooters in the draft… and they were both exceptional athletes who tested very well at the combine. Young led an Oregon team that had no one who could score beside him to the NCAAs… ConnaughTRON was a team-first guy who led Notre Dame to the elite 8, almost pulling off an upset against UK’s stacked squad. Hated the Pointer pick because he couldn’t shoot at… Read more »
I agree on the Manu comparison. I think if he comes to the NBA he could play the SG position if he hasn’t added enough weight or at least be a hybrid of sorts.
Thanks Arch… I plan on checking out that other game later tonight. I think he’ll work at the SF position… he might not have the foot speed at SG to keep up with guys in the NBA. But, to your point about hybrid, I definitely see him as a point forward/ball guard for sure.
this may be a blessing in disguise —-T.T. ” DISSING / PISSSING ” OFF LEBRON——-SO WHEN / IF THE CAVS TRADE OR DON’T GIVE T.T. A MAX CONTRACT THERE WILL BE NO REMORSE FROM LEBRON OR THREATS TO LEAVE ——-T.T. AND PAUL ARE RAPIDLY CLIMBING THE VILLAIN LIST
Sooooo…Thompson not attending LBJ’s training camp. I find this problematic. Agents need to do their thing, Players should get all they can. But when it interferes with the product on the court, I don’t like it.
OMG! Joakim Noah (or maybe his sister) won a big tennis event:

911—-LET US NEVER FORGET !!!!
Amen to that NOMAD
I used to think I was pretty good in podcasts, but I gotta say, Nate, you and EG are really natural. I mean sometimes I ignore you a it while we’re pocasting because I’m zipping up a tent or doing laundry or one of my kids is crying and I’m on mute – but man you bring really good analysis. Pretty much every time you start a sentence with “it’s kind of like” or “it reminds me of” your comparison is spot on. Get outta that thankless job you are in and get a job in sports radio. (don’t actually… Read more »
So THAT’S what that zipping noise was!
Zipping up a tent. Wait what? Are you camped outside of TT’s house so you can break the news on the QO before Windy?
I think you’re pretty good too Tom. Always look forward to your real life anecdotes at the end of your podcasts too (the library, the softball home run, etc.)
THE LIBRARY! HOW WAS THAT A THING PEOPLE USE LIBRARIES!
LOL!
The State of the NBA Rivalry http://nyloncalculus.com/2015/09/10/the-state-of-the-nba-rivalry/
Good job on the pod. I could never get through Deadwood, just made me want to snooze. I’m struggling to get through “Boardwalk Empire.” “Mr. Robot” is solid, has a little “Fight Club” to it. Has anyone seen the new Mad Max?
Yes. Mr Robot, so far, is good enough.
Deadwood sucked
Mad Men was the worst show that people pretended to like
True Detectives was a snoozefest
Cols – FYSA: I left you a nastygram on the last post.
Don’t bring that weak stuff
Yeah, Sorry about that. I take back the click bait comments. I rescind them from the record. But I don’t hafe that power.
Sorry Tom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry NAte!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry EG,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Cols.
We’re good.
Apology accepted… sorry I questioned the authenticity of your Cavs fandom also…
Only you could confuse Mad Men and Mad Max, Cols
Great pod guys. Should have saved it for the morning, but it was too good to fall asleep to (British soccer podcasts are like seraquil for anyone with sleep apnea). Deadwood and Carnivale are two of my favorite HBO shows ever. Both went out too early and perhaps that part of their appeal. They never had a chance to get stale. I’m in the absolute minority that I don’t think Cardale will be a good NFL QB. Urban Meyer made Tebow the greatest college football player ever. I was shocked that Barrett wasn’t named the starter. He would win the… Read more »
Cardale has a great arm, he’s accurate and strong. He moves in the pocket well and keeps his eyes downfield. He’s able to take a hit and get the ball off with accuracy.
I think he’ll do fine in the NFL if he gets decent coaching. There is no comparison at all with Tebow. Tebow was maybe the greatest college QB of all time playing in a system that was perfect for his talents. But he wasn’t asked and couldn’t throw the ball all over the field the way Jones can.
I can’t believe I agree with you about something. We should talk football instead of cavs. I was up for the Browns drafting Cardale last year had he entered the draft.
The Browns would ruin him. Don’t put a promising player with that complete clownshow of an organization.
He’s from Cleveland and word is that he’d love to be a Brown. I’m sure if he went there, he’d be the savior of Cleveland Browns football. The Browns would be perennial playoff contenders until Cardale decided to take his talents to Pittsburgh or Denver. Then Browns football would suck once again… until Cardale decided to return and finally lead the Browns to the Super Bowl in 2022…
And then he would be the BIGGEST VILLAIN IN BROWNS HISTORY COLS!
Wait, there’s always Modell.
That’s it! Modell should have been villain #1 on the Cavs list! I saw a news item a couple years ago about a guy from Akron or somewhere getting busted for whizzing on Modell’s grave.
The Browns would ruin him. Unless, of course, he is actually so good he can’t be ruined, in which case they won’t draft him in the first place.
You summed it up perfectly. If he’s good he won’t be a Brown. If he’s terrible they will definitely draft him.
58% completion rate is garbage in college. Not sure where the accuracy being a strength comes in. He great size and a strong arm. Still a really small sample size. Browns will win 6 or 7 games. Just good enough to miss out on a franchise QB.
They throw a ton downfield, though. More incompletions, but I see your point. I think he’ll be a stud.
