TT May Be Back for Three Years or just a Qualifying Offer *Updated*
2015-09-24After a report from Brian Windhorst just three days ago said the Cavs and Tristan Thompson were more than $14 million apart in contract negotiations, Chris Broussard has reported TT will re-sign for a contract worth $53 million over three years.
NBA SOURCES CONFIRM AGENT RICH PAUL WILL HAVE TRISTAN THOMPSON SIGN A 3 YEAR – $53 MILLION CONTRACT WITH CAVS.
— Chris Broussard (@Chris_Broussard) September 24, 2015
That would mean Canadian Dynamite would be making about $17 million a season, which is not close to what he reportedly desired. He was looking for a five year deal worth $94 million, a max contract. If he were maxed out, he would get $18.8 million per season.
This reported contract is about $2 million less than what TT’s group wanted three days ago, and it is still a million more than the $16 million a year the Cavs reportedly wanted to offer. This contract sounds ridiculous because it might just be imaginary at this point. Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal and Joe Vardon of the Northeast Ohio Media Group have both tweeted that no deal has been done:
I’ve been told reports of extension for Tristan Thompson inaccurate. No deal struck, nor do #Cavs seem interested in reported 3/$53 million
— Jason Lloyd (@JasonLloydABJ) September 24, 2015
Reports of Tristan signing at three years for $53M are premature, sources emphatically insist
— Joe Vardon (@joevardon) September 24, 2015
Maybe Broussard prematurely Tweeted. Maybe, he has inside “sources.” Keep checking back to see if the Canadian man of mystery will be paid over $10 million per year to rebound, play sound pick and roll defense, and get garbage points, or if he will paid be just under $7 million a year to do those things by taking the qualifying offer.
*Update*
Story is that Thompson has lowered his demand from 5 yr/$94 max to 3 years/$53 million

Cavs management will be on high alert now thanks to Broussard. Instead of TT wanting $14 million more than the Cavs want to give to him over five years, he now wants just $3 million more over three years. These negotiations are going places.
Does TT have much more of an upside?
His tangible value is he is a plus defender and he gets you a few more attempts and he’s bionic.
Should the Cavs overpay with the better shooters Moz and ‘Big’ Al Kaun aready on the roster?
QO seems the only low risk high reward option.
Hey, CtB administrators:
Did you guys make some major changes? WHen I try to post, I get “enable Cookies and JavaScript” type messages. This has never happened before, and does not happen on other sites. I had to fire up my crappy notebook to enter this.
It does that to me when I try to post from my phone and I’m not on wifi. I don’t get it either.
Sorry, Raoul. It’s probably some holdover bugginess from the technical issues we had yesterday…
Yo guys. This is him basically asking for a 3 year max offer, this is a BETTER deal for him. Because he could enter free agency after 3 years, in his prime with a radically higher cap. If the Cavs offer him a max this year, it will be because of the last two or 3 years of the deal, because it might be a good deal then. Getting rid of those years makes this a far, far worse deal for the Cavs. There’s no way they’d agree to it. It is them asking for more not less. Viewing deals… Read more »
Exactly… I think Nate, maybe someone else, that the value for the Cavs would be at the end of the deal, not the beginning. Thus, the 3 year max offer makes it appear that the negotiations are moving backward, not forward.
The Salary Cap is expected to jump during the 2017 season and the 2018 season; however, there has been talk that it could drop dramatically during the 2019 season once the TV money influx evens itself out. Having TT off the books by then could work out, as he will have hurt his value by having played off the bench and more teams will be capped out.
I just want to point out that I said 3 years 50 mill three days ago. I wonder if Clutch reads this blog.
The 3yr/53 mil is a worse deal for the Cavs than 5yr/94 mil. TT doesn’t know how to negotiate. He’s getting further away from making a deal. Give him the qualifying offer. We’ll take our chances in the free agent market next summer to find a rebounder. Guys like Jordan Hill, Ian Mahinmi, Brandon Bass, Roy Hibbert, Chris Anderson, Hassan Whiteside, Al Horford, Zaza Pachulia, JJ Hickson, Marreese Speights, Bismack Biyombo, Luis Scola, Nene Hilario, and Derrick Williams will all be free agents next summer. Drop a two year, 7 to 12 mil/year on one of these next summer. I… Read more »
Yes, I know, Al Horford would cost a lot more and doesn’t belong in this category. Along with probably Whiteside.
Broussard needs to learn the difference between “will” and “willing.” Twitter is a loaded gun… and “sauces” cover up truth like so much pasta…
LOL @ the last part of that! Where’s the meme at EG?
Or, if you like your “sauces” in a can…
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THERE WE GO! HAHAHA!
3/$53 is just the first three years of a 5/$94 contract.
I’m sure 4/$73 is on the table from Rich Paul too. That doesn’t mean it’s any better than 5/$94.
Exactly… which is why it’s a ridiculous story in the first place.
According to Bobby Marks, the 3/53 is the same money as Jimmy Butler and Kawhi Leonard.
In my opinion, 3/53 for TT is a joke. He’s nowhere close to being as valuable as Butler or Leonard.
QO is definitely a win for the Cavs.
I guarantee TT will take 5/80 on the last day of Sept.
That reported three year deal (which is probably nonsense) is actually bad for the Cavs luxury tax. But who cares about TT – the big story is Metta World Peace back with the Lakers for another title run!!
LET’S GET THAT 3 YR DEAL DONE / GET 3 NBA TITLES /AND WORRY ABOUT THE NEXT CONTRACT 3 YRS FROM NOW —-GO CAVS ” IN THE LAND “
If true, shows he has no real leverage and would signal his desire to stay even if forced to take QO. I don’t think he wants that QO. Hopefully the Cavs sign him to the 3 year.
At this point lets just rent him for a year on the QO. 17 mill a year for backup PF/C? Need Mozgov money
I agree. Need a lot of money for Mozgov. I have a hard time giving him $16MM.
Don’t you think we can find a free agent at $17.7MM willing to come to Cleveland that might be better than TT after this year?
We’ll applaud thee deal now, and then after two years we’ll see it as an albatross like Varejao’s contract. We won’t have enough money to sign Anthony Bennett after he’s been out of the league a year.
$53/3 is closer to $18MM. And then he gets to leave after 3 years when he’s still young and there’s cap space for teams to pry him away. Let’s go $45/3.
more like 3/36. He’s a terrible shooter… has no post moves. Only adequate, not shut down defender.
We’d be better off giving him a two-year deal with a player option for $10 mil a year. He’d get more than the qualifying offer, could be a free agent next year, but doesn’t have the bad taste in his mouth of playing on a QO. The Cavs would avoid a big cap hit for a year, and could offer him more next year. Somehow I doubt TT is going to take it, because he KNOWS he’s banking on one successful playoff run, and next year he’s going to get nowhere close to a max when he’s playing 15 minutes… Read more »
