Live Thread: Cavs vs. 76ers (Pre-Season)
2015-10-08The Commadore 64 that produces the NBA schedule assigned the Cavs a preseason back-to-back to start the 2015-16 campaign. LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love, Iman Shumpert, J.R. Smith, and Timofey Mozgov are sitting the meaningless contest out. Anderson Varejao is a game time decision, but they should probably give him the night off as well. The 76ers are still in their scorched Earth phase, but should be able to trounce the Cavs zoo crew. Let’s sacrifice two hours of our youth together watching who pulls ahead in the race for the 15th roster spot.
If you’d rather watch Timofey Mozgov’s new Sky Zone commercial on a loop instead of the game, I wouldn’t hold it against you at all. I went to a Sky Zone in LA a year ago on a date, and had an absolute ball and a biscuit. I highly recommend it for a child’s birthday party. My only complaint about Sky Zone is that it lacks the terrifying animatronics of Chuck E. Cheese’s, and they don’t sell beer. Maybe I’m a weirdo, but I like a subtle element of fear and alcohol at social functions. Heck, Chuck E. Cheese’s founder Nolan Bushnell looks like he could have been a casting shoo-in to play General Zaroff in an adaption of “The Most Dangerous Game.”
@ESPNNBA: He’s one of five @cavs in the top 80 of our #NBArank. Timofey Mozgov is our No. 78. http://t.co/4JAGkqM1Ka
@langwhitaker: Former Cavaliers player Daniel ‘Boobie’ Gibson leaving NBA for rap career http://t.co/3xV7ZMyIS7
I thought he left like four years ago?
Good writeup Corey but you definitely haven’t been to Chuck E Cheese in awhile. I used to take my little brother so that would have been at least 20 years ago. I remember the rooms with the animatronics, the balls, the rides, the games, pizza, etc. I just went a couple years ago with my son for a classmates party. Its totally different (at least in my area). There is only one main stage and two supporting stages. The only time the animatronics are on is when its time to celebrate one of the kids birthdays, then the curtains close.… Read more »
such an awful boring game
Loved the Stephen’s alley-oop. Hated his defense on that game-winning 3. Dude has long arms and never got any pressure on the shooter.
Don’t know if it was instincts or what…but that was a poor showing. A guy that can’t shoot or dribble better be a Tony-Allen-like defender.
Daye had his moments tonight.
I’m just glad to see these guys in uniforms again.
@HoopsRumors: Cavs To Sign Dionte Christmas, To Waive Dunigan http://t.co/P3cG5iBvI1 http://t.co/8V1PBZxEjd
@ChrisBHaynes: #Cavs are bringing Dionte Christmas on as a camp invite once he passes his physical, a league source confirms.
Are they cutting anyone to do so?
Let me check with my sources…. They’re replacing M. Dunigan apparently… Who knew?!?!?
@SpearsNBAYahoo: The Cavaliers are signing free agent shooting guard Dionte Christmas, a source told Yahoo Sports.
They miss Rakeem! But really huh????
@SportsNom: NEW MOZGOV COMMERCIAL. I REPEAT: NEW MOZGOV COMMERCIAL. https://t.co/tEbd6xHibG
It was in Cory’s writeup at the top of this thread…
Oops sorry I didn’t read it. Sorry Cory!
It’s cool. The game was definitely better than I anticipated.
@DerekBodnerNBA: #sixers head coach Brett Brown said Jahlil Okafor had soreness in his knee. Intended to give him more minutes. Doesn’t think it’s serious.
I WOULD SAY EAT JOE’S CONTRACT / JUST NOT SEEING AN NBA PLAYER THERE ( EVEN AS A ROLE PLAYER ) WHERE I DO SEE THAT IN BOTH CUNNINGHAM AND DAYE —HE DID FINISH WITH 9 BD’S AND PLAYS SNART “D” ALONG WITH THE ABILITY TO SHOOT AND POSSIBLY PLAY 3 POSITIONS
Bill Cower has the best job. All he has to do is scream for 15 minutes, 18-20 times a year and he gets paid.
15th spot competition —-
I have:
– DJ/Cook winning the scrimmage
– Daye winning against ATL
– Cunningham winning against Sixers
It’s Cunningham, Daye, and DJ, and it’s not even close after that. Griff has to be looking for a way to get someone else to pay Harris’s contract at this point. Maybe they can include him in a deal to move TT.
No love for Cook? Gonna be hard to move Harris with very few assets.
Cook is too green to contribute anything now. He doesn’t seem to know where he’s going most of the time, and can only play point. There’s no reason to carry a fourth point on the Cavs. Cunningham, Daye, and even Stephens have utility the Cavs could use in a pinch.
@CavsJoeG: Despite loss, HUGE game for Jared Cunningham – 31pts, 8-10 FG, 2-3 3pt FG, 13-16 FT, 4reb, 3asst.
Is Joe Harris’s roster spot really safe?
How could it possibly be after the last two games?
Guaranteed contract, which means Cavs have to pay him and if they cut him and pay someone else, it might cost $2.5-5 million extra in luxury tax. Have to think they don’t want to drop that kind of cash on someone who won’t move the needle.
Too bad the Cavs don’t have any second rounders they can give anyone to take Joe Harris off their hands.
Joe Harris should be cut tomorrow…
DJ Stephens was guarding Wilboken on that last play. Minus one point for DJ. Can’t get mad for losing preseason games.
Joe was supposed to come up to switch onto him though… he was late on the rotation…
Joe just kinda froze and waved his arms to the sides…
Jesus, Joe. SHOOT THE BALL.
Right in Joe H’s face…
Holy bench player!!!!!
Scotty Wilbekin hasn’t hit a shot like that since Florida…
noooovertime, please.
I’m not sure OT is permitted in preaseason.
Huh?!?!?!? What the hook?
Damn Stephens!!!!!!!!
WOW!! DJ got UP!
I like Cunningham’s defense and athleticism. I just don’t see how his offensive game would work within the normal Cavs rotation, even if he was just filling in for another player.
Mike, it’s slim pickings. It seems like a new guy steps up each night. Who would you have in that spot?
And actually, JC was strong on two consecutive nights…
He got to the line 21 times in the two games…
It changes, I’ll have something up on this on Sunday.
Chances are, if they kept him, it would be for defensive purposes and not for his offense…
I definitely agree, if they kept him it would be for defense.
However, I disagree with the argument that the Cavs have enough shooters. That was proven last year, and having shooters is ultimately what will make LBJ, KLove, and Kyrie’s job easier.
They’ll have Delly, Shumpert (eventually), and TT (eventually) for defensive purposes. Even though Delly’s a good spot up shooter, really, their value is in defense and not shooting.
You know you just put (eventually) next to two of the defensive standouts… right? This is my point, at least early in the season. Why not keep a defensive/energy guy who can get to the rack if necessary?
They have the BHE to use at mid-season for a real shooter if needed…
Yes I am aware HAHA! I don’t think there is anyone who thinks they won’t be on the roster this season though. So that’s 3 roster spots for defensive specialists.
San Antonio proved in their recent championship run that you can make guys serviceable defenders with smarts, rather than athleticism.
That’s true, they do have the BHE, and I hope they do bring another shooter in.
Yeah, not enough shooting is a post-January problem IMHO…
ANYBODY WANT TO ” DONATE ” THAT CHRISTMAS ALE TO ME BY BETTING AGAINST CUNNINGHAM MAKING THE TEAM—–SMOKIN JOE CHECKING WITH VIRGINIA TO SEE IF ANY ASSISTANT COACHING VACANACIES ARE OPEN—DAYE ALTHOUGH NOT SHOOTING LIKE LAST NIGHT STILL HAS 7 PTS/ 6 REB’S / TOOK A CHARGE AND PLAYED DECENT DEFENSE ——–COULD SEE CUNNINGHAM GIVING OPPOSING GDS FIT S WITH HIS DEFENSE / PRETTY SURE HE BEAT GARY PAYTON’S RECORD FOR STEALS AT OREGON STATE —THAT’S NOT TOO SHABBY
Nope… I’m in agreement with you NOMAD…
He tied Payton for steals his junior year with 91 steals. I love those Oregon players.
Cunningham: Are you not entertained?
Daye is a decent shooter, but JC plays the game on both ends with more energy than anyone else on the floor…
If they can keep an extra guy in place of TT, I would keep JC, Daye and Cook and cut Joe H…
How can they keep 3 and only cut 1?
There’s already a 15th spot open… they cut Joe H and they have (I think) a spot open until TT signs…
Yes…this is possible. There are 13 guaranteed slots right now on the preseason roster. If you you cut Joe H…that takes it down to 12, leaving 13 spots to fill. I wouldn’t cut Joe…I would cut Della
JC getting great position in front of Canaan right there…
Cunningham with the poster!!!!
