Recap: Raps 87, Cavs 81 (or, it’s going to be okay)
2015-10-18Before my wife and I had kids, I spent ten years coaching high school cross country and track and field. One of the philosophies an older coach taught me, that I used to keep perspective during the ups and downs of the season, was “It’s never as good as it seems, and it’s never as bad as it seems.” While some fans may be concerned with the Cavaliers falling to 0-6 in the preseason, the truth is that it is nowhere near as bad as it seems.
The Not So Bad…
- Why are things better than they seem? Well first off, Kevin Love is back. Love was limited to 13 first-half minutes—he’ll likely play tomorrow night against the Dallas Mavericks—but he was effective in the minutes he did play, finishing with six points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block. He had a pair of behind the back passes to Anderson Varejao and Mo Williams respectively, that were arguably the highlights of the night for the Cavaliers. The rest of the team did a nice job getting Love regular touches early, which is especially important given the limited time he has to prepare for the regular season.
- After the game, Jason Lloyd shared some more good news with Cavs fans.
Iman Shumpert has been cleared for some court work now that cast is off, but only with left hand. No timetable yet for using right hand
— Jason Lloyd (@ByJasonLloyd) October 19, 2015
Obviously the more quickly Shumpert returns to the court, the better. Hopefully his recovery time ends up being on the short end of the original estimates of 12 to 14 weeks.
3. The Cavs had arguably their best effort of the preseason tonight, Holding the Raptors to just 38.4% shooting, and 25% from deep. Toronto scored just five points in the first 10:02 of the second quarter and 32 points in the second and third quarters combined. Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan were a combined 5 of 22 from the floor for a total of 13 points. They were handily outplayed by Mo Williams and Matthew Dellavedova, something one would not have seen happening before the game.
4. Jared Cunningham continues to play head and shoulders above the rest of the training camp invitees. While Cunningham’s line of three for eight for 10 points was rather pedestrian, he continued to show a solid handle and played tremendous defense while guarding Terrence Ross and Cory Joseph. At this point it would be absolutely shocking if Cunningham wasn’t on the final roster.
5. Anderson Varejao finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists in 21 minutes of action. With his long injury history it’s hard to count on Andy for the season, but the preseason games have shown that he should be able to help the Cavaliers has long as he stays healthy.
The Bad…
- The Cavaliers big man rotation is awfully thin. Obviously the return of Love is a huge boost, but the bench sans Tristan Thompson is a huge concern. Sasha Kaun looks like a solid interior defender, but he has yet to find his place on offense. Conversely, James Jones is neither strong enough to guard big men, nor quick enough to guard perimeter players. When his shot is not falling, Jones is simply unplayable. Finally, Anderson Varejao has been solid as he returns from a torn Achilles, but the Cavaliers simply cannot count on him to stay healthy.
- On that note, while the idea that Jack Cooley was brought in to help replace Tristan Thompson is obviously absurd, the fact that he was abused on defense by Anthony Bennett of all people shows how limited he is.
- Joe Harris shot 2-8 from the floor and was 0-4 from three. He did have six rebounds, but it’s getting hard to see how Harris helps a championship contender. He’s a poor defender, holds onto the ball too long, and takes too long to get his three-point shot off.
The preseason schedule mercifully ends tomorrow night when the Cavaliers take on the Dallas Mavericks at Quicken Loans Arena. From there the team will have one week of practice time to get themselves ready for the start of the season. With the injuries to Irving and Shumpert, as well as Thompson being unsigned, things are obviously not as good as the Cavaliers or their fans want them to be, but with the return of Kevin Love they are also not as bad as they once seemed.
FEARTHESWORD IS SAYING THAT THE T.T. OFFER WAS NEVER PULLED / STILL ON THE TABLE —-SO WHAT IS STILL THE STALEMATE —-CAVS WAITING TO SEE WHO MIGHT BE WAIVED / RELEASED THIS WEEK AS POSSIBLE T.T. REPLACEMENTS AND THEN MAKE A DECISION BASED ON WHAT IS OUT THERE —-THE CHESS GAMES LINGERS ON AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN A BIG FAN OF CHESS !!
Weren’t they the ones who ran with the Larry Coon speculation in the first place?
AGREE WITH NATE ON THE PURSUING/ SIGNING OF BIYOMBO / RIGHT PLAYER—SKILL SET FOR WHAT WE NEED
Must say, K Love was REALLY impressive in his short stint. The two behind-the-back passes were exceptional…led to two easy looks and buckets. A sign of what he can bring to the game…it’s not just shooting! Welcome back Mr. Love!
I am suddenly and for the first time actually contemplating the TT situation. What a ridiculous thing to do to the team you just went to the finals with…and what a waste of the relatively small amount of time left he has to get personal help from a top 5 great NBA player…and what a giant bunch of “this type of thing seems to happen to Cleveland sports teams during what should be some of their best moments.” Sure it happens elsewhere, but Tristan has gone from fan favorite to possible legendary Cleveland sports villain.
I agree. TT, with lots of help from RP, is damaging what used to be a great team-first reputation.
You don’t see holdouts in the Spurs organization. I’ve said this multiple times over the past few weeks, what happened to TT’s “Its all about winning, as long as we are winning” attitude? I LOVED TT at the end of last season. Now he fluctuates from minor annoyance to full fledged rage monster in terms of how I am feeling. Everyone else managed to get on board. We should be heading into the start of the season with the whole team together and ready to go, hurt or not. He’s seriously harshing my buzz…
Saw nothing to get upset about in this one. The rotation guys, despite some ugly offense (it can’t be easy to play with different sets of players every single game), defended well and forced Toronto into mid-rangers and tough shots. They should have had a bigger league when the scrubs came in, but the end of this game was guys who will never play for the Cavs in any meaningful way versus Toronto’s rotation bench players. There’s a reason those guys are D-Leaguers, and Toronto’s team has pro contracts. Cunningham played another solid game, Joe Harris kept overclubbing threes, and… Read more »
Unfortunately K-Love’s health issues are never about his physical conditioning.
Agree. Kaun look horrid at rebounding.
He’s built like one of those big men that existed back before guys did weight training.
Like Chris Mihm?
I really hope Delly has improved his shot. That plus his decent off ball defense and we have a guy we will want to play, not just someone who has to play because everyone else is injured.
And yes, Kaun is going to suck. But at the very least he can be in the Perkins role.
As much as I love Delly, the key for him truly turning into a good player is speeding up his release and expanding the range of the floater. Looks like he’s made some progress with both
Get me a Brads bacon cheeseburger!!!!
“My own card and sandwich, makes a fella feel 7′ tall”. My brother and I loved that commercial. Still say it to each other every so often.
You can have a Vegan burger!
SEE SMOKIN JOE AT CANTON ( YOU CAN’T ADD ARM LENGTH ) WILL FREE UP A ROSTER SPOT / COOLEY IS NOT THE ANSWER/ START SEARCHING FOR ANOTHER / BETTER ROLE POSITION BIG / MDN WILL HELP IN SPOT/ ROLE DUTY ALSO WITH THE GROUP OF VETERANS AROUND HIM YOU MAY SEE HIM REACH MORE OF HIS POTENTIAL / DON’T SEE THE CAVS STARTING OUT 10-3 / BELIEVE THEY WILL STRUGGLE SOME OUT OF THE GATES MAYBE SOMETHING LIKE 9-6 HOPING EVERYONE STAYS HEALTHY AND THEY DON’T GO INTO ” PAUL-T.T. ” PANIC MODE
Smokin’ Joe, even in Canton still takes up a Cavs’ roster spot.
It is as bad as it seems whether Lebron/Jefferson or Kyrie was not playing. It is as bad as it seems. They got outplayed and had their asses kicked last pre-season game.
Do you have anything to back this up or are you just here to troll? You cannot operate in a vacuum like that. The Cavs are playing basically 2 starters only and at limited minutes none-the-less. The Raptors were playing their starters much, much longer.
In addition to that, you can hardly classify that loss as “getting their asses kicked”.
Regardless whether Mo outplayed Raptors – their bench caved us in and they still WON!
Who exactly did their bench cave in? A bunch of guys who won’t be on the roster by week’s end? Yeah, they threw the Champ in there for some reason, but it’s not like he can guard anyone anymore.
Like most of these preseason games, the fourth quarter is all about their second line guys (and sometimes first line guys – looking at you JKidd) competing against the Cavs’ rugby scrum for the 15th spot…
Not too worried. I don’t think anyone here is. Might be a little rougher than we want in the first month or so.
In limited action Cooley actually looks okay.
If Bennett can’t own a preseason game against D-League/Rotation players, then I don’t see a very long career for him.
Aw, c’mon… he dominated Jack Cooley after all…
What can Smokin’ Joe do to get better?
Attend NOMAD’s shooting clinic?
Well, he could join the WNBA I guess
I wonder if Bennett will actually find himself in Toronto?
Word is that Drake gave him one of these…
Not sure the point of signing Cooley this late in preseason. Clearly just a practice body.
Andy’s elbow jumper is $!
DeMarre Caroll looks like he was searching for a needle in a hay sack.
What’s a hay sack?
Does that answer your question, UDog? ;)
Joe Harris will likely spend most of his time in Canton.
…bagging groceries at the Acme Fresh Market or Fishers Foods…
Delly is still great at shooting 3s.
Yup. 6/10 in last 4 games. Career 39 percenter. love it.
His form and confidence last night would indicate that he’s spent a lot of time practicing shooting threes in the off-season…
I think Moz constantly gets screwed by the refs, and that goes back to last season playoffs.
There needs to be more consistency on the “rule of verticality.”
It’s the rule of being big. It doesn’t matter if you were fouled, your big and the smaller guy throwing elbows to your ribs or pinching your nuts will get the acting call.
Well, look no further than who was reffing this game… Joey C and his band of merry men…
He really does. They seem to just hate him more than any other NBA player like him.
I know it’s only preseason but Mo is a bit of a chucker.
Yeah, but to be fair, he’s always kind of been that…. Actually, up until this game, it seems like Mo has been more pass-first than shoot-first. Wonder if Blatt told him to look for his shot more this game…
His last 2 years have shown a decline. I just hope he keeps his turnovers no more than 2 a game.
The big man rotation I suitable to at least start the season. My thoughts on TT are this, RP and TT and Mark “Terminal Illness to your bank account” Termini are waiting to see how the Cavs fair without TT. If they start off poorly, then they will try to use it as leverage to sign Tristan.
I haven’t watched the second half yet, because I went to see Sicario, and it was excellent.
Mike missed one of the bigs in his analysis too: Lebron James. With plenty of time to rest up his back and get his body right, he should be able to give some minutes at the 4. We might experiment with some lineups this year with Klove at the 5 and Lebron at the 4. That leaves a rotation of Moz, Kaun, Varejao, Love, LeBron, and JFJ (as a DH basically) for the 4 and the 5. TT needs a couple of injuries/bouts of ineffectiveness to really press his leverage. And even if he gets those and the cavs start… Read more »
Right. You can’t add anything to the TPE in and of itself. But one could, for example, make two separate deals with the same team. Both would have to pass trade rules individually. So, one for the TPE yields us a player who fits, salary wise. While another could be a deal for smoking Joe or another player.
Honestly, I don’t see using the BH TPE right now. I think we bargain hunt around the winter of discontent for some teams. Now, the Mike Miller TPE might be a possibility.
So, hypothetical situation. Say the Cavs start off hot, lets go with 6-2, 10-3. Do you guys think this forces TTs hands? I suppose my question is, how long do the Cavs have to stay healthy and effective in the front court for TT/RP to decide its no longer worth it to count on an injury to slow the cavs down in TTs absence. Also, I am having some renewed interest in the BHTE and what it can bring us. I keep hearing about tying it to someone like smokin joe and make a trade but I thought I remembered… Read more »
It can be used with other players in a trade, but you can’t combine the contracts to absorb a bigger contract: For example, if we wanted to trade for Kenneth Faried – his cap hit is roughly 11.2 million. Since the Haywood exception is only for 10.5 million, we couldn’t use it, even if we added Joe Harris to bring the total up to 11.2. Conversely, if we tried to trade for Markeif Morris, who makes roughly 8 million, we could use the Haywood exception since the entire contract fits under the exception. We could throw in Joe Harris if… Read more »
I have a gut feeling that regardless of what happens on the court, we won’t see TT sign until January…
I think he will sign before the season begins.
That would be a neat trick… especially given that there is reportedly no communication between the two sides at the moment…
I would be utterly shocked if TT signed before the season, though I hope it isn’t until January. I hope Mama Thompson talks some sense into her boy some more.
ROSTER CUTS THIS WEEK / MIGHT BE SOME HOPEFULS OR TRADES BEING MADE PRIOR TO CUTS
Seems like a high possibility that there will be some interesting guys coming available…
GOOD TO HAVE A FELLOW CROSS AND TRACK COACH ON CTB ( HAVE DONE BOTH ALONG WITH BASKETBALL FOR OVER 25 YRS ) YES LEGITIMATE CONCERNS WITH THE BIG ROTATION ( ESPECIALLY IF THERE IS AN INJURY ) IS THAT WHAT PAUL / T.T. ARE BANKING ON / STILL THINK THEIR ARE VIABLE BIGS OUT THERE THAT CAN FILL THE ROLE OF 10–15 MINUTES ADEQUATELY —-MAYBE CUT THE TIES WITH JOE TO OPEN ANOTHER SPOT FOR A BIG/ IT HAS BEEN BLOGGED QUITE OFTEN RECENTLY ENTIRE PRE SEASON ) ON THE OPINION OF JOE / JUST CAN’T SEE WHERE HE… Read more »
I think the cavs believe Joe has the ability to become an elite shooter and will keep him at least another year probably two to see if he pans out. I’ve pointed out before that there are a number of 3-4 year college shooters that took a few years to develop in the pros because they had below average athleticism. Steve Kerr, 4 years of college and 5 years in the pros before he became useful J.J. Reddick 4 years of college and 3 years in the pros before he became decent and longer before he became good. Danny Green… Read more »
