Live Thread: Cavs @ Knicks
2015-11-13“WELCOME TO MADISON SQUARE GARDEN! THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS ARENA!”
This is the traditional refrain that will come blaring over the public address system just before tipoff of tonight’s game at The Garden, as the Cavs make their first stop on a three game road trip to face the Knicks in the Big Apple. And truly, even despite the more recent struggles of New York’s basketball team, there might be no bigger basketball stage than what many refer to as the “Mecca” of the sport — including the King himself…
“If I could have 82 regular-season games in the Garden,” James said last February to the New York Post, “I would because it’s the Mecca of basketball.”
People have claimed that there’s an almost spiritual feeling that overcomes you from just being inside the circular arena in the heart of Manhattan, and looking up and seeing the names of legendary athletes and performers hanging in the rafters. It’s where Willis Reed, famously limped onto the floor to rescue the Knicks in Game 7 of the 1971 NBA Finals, giving the team their first ever championship. It hosted the 1951 fight where the young Rocky Marciano knocked out his hero Joe Louis and proceeded to cry, and also the “Fight of the Century” when an undefeated Joe Frazier beat an undefeated Muhammad Ali.
The list of iconic moments at The Garden stretches even beyond sports. President John F. Kennedy was here for his birthday in 1962, when Marilyn Monroe performed the most infamous rendition of “Happy Birthday” known to man. MSG was also the home for the famous 1971 benefit concert for Bangladesh, a philanthropic endeavor that was repeated in 2001 after 9/11, in 2005 in response to Hurricane Katrina, and in 2012 after Hurricane Sandy.
The Cavs will look to make a little history of their own tonight, as they attempt to win their eighth straight to start the season at 8-1 for the first time since 1976-77. Cleveland has a three game winning streak at The Garden, and won the first meeting with the Knicks at the Q a week ago, so it’s likely New York will be looking to even the score, and their own record at 5-5. To accomplish this, however, they’ll need a better performance from Carmelo Anthony who was outscored 11-2 by LeBron in the fourth quarter of the first meeting, as the Cavs came back from a 15 point deficit.
Starting lineup for the Cavs: Mo Williams, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Timofey Mozgov. And for the Knicks: Jose Calderon, Arron Afflalo, Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis and Robin Lopez.
Tip off is at 7:30 p.m. (EST), and the game can be seen on Fox Sports Ohio and NBATV, and heard on 1100 WTAM.
Tune in and catch all of the action… If you’re lucky, you might just see a little history being made…
GO CAVS!
I can’t watch this game. NBA is still “archiving” this game three hours after its over. I hate them.
This had to be one of the worse games for Love. 7pts 20%fg% and 20% 3P% 3 TO. At least he had 11 rebounds.
Oh and 50% at FT% Yikes!!
This what makes a great BB team: even when you a stinking up the gym most of the night, you can turn it on at the end and steal a win!
Against the Knicks.
RJ didn’t play 2nd half because of ankle sprain. This is the 4th game that James Jones isn’t helping us. In this situation, why not try Cunningham? Jr came out with a cramp in this game. too
Cancel the freakout:

Follow up to earlier tweet: the LeBron/Blatt exchange in the 3rd Q was LeBron asking for a rest. Blatt called timeout to get him out.
Campy with my new favorite word: maturedness
GREAT COMEBACK ( STILL UPSETTING THE FOUL SHOOTING AND REGRESSIVE OFFENSE ) SOMETIMES YES YOU NEED TO WIN UGLY / WOULD LIKE A GAME WHERE WE CAN REST SOME STARTERS AND GET A MDN / SASHA SIGHTING —-GOING TO BE TOUGH TO WIN TOMORROW AT THE BUCKS
Like Shaq, we only make the freebies when it counts ;)
Man, this team can play some stifling defense when it wants to. Good things on the horizin. We still don’t have KI or Shump. Blows my mind.
The team’s gonna learn a lot from this one, win or lose, moving forward. But still happy to get the W despite the below norm performance. Gotta win ugly sometimes.
That’s rare: Delly with 0 assists.
His MVP claim just took a hit.
Still the coear leader, though…
That Curry guy from GS is playing out of his mind just to get in the conversation.
Yeah Steph who?
It’s clearly
1. Delly
2. Ryan Hollins
3. Curry
So many missed shots and he had several passes lead to free throws
They are not doing the Delly/TT lobs anymore
Carmelo shrinking again in the second half… 8-11 for 22 points in first half… 1-9 for 4 points in the second…
Your +/- leaders for the night LeBron and Delly at +13.
Time for the LeBron-Delly co-MVP campaign.
Lebron totally smothered Carmelo on D. Impressive defensive individual performance.
Cavs had no business winning that game. That was rough
Have only been following this one via gamecast, but sounds like the Cavs are more or less stealing this one after bricking shots all night…
Mo scored the final 6 points of the game.
Best start for Cavs since 76-77 at 8-1
Got lucky there… Who’s man was Porzingis there? KLove or TT?
LeBron’s. See above. Stayed with Melo.
Fortunate… a good pass is an easy dunk for Kristaps…
Most likely Lebron’s but it could have been TT
That was really Lebron’s responsibility to switch onto Porzingis. He just stood there and didn’t take a step. Got lucky on that one
A lot of this is on Derrick Fisher. Why you play Chaka in crunch time?
Great play from Knicks but good luck for us with this potential win
Wow. Great play call. Awful execution
Huge break. Man do the Knicks suck.
Knicks went into shock after the failed alley oop and let Mo burn half the clock.
One stop right now Cavs
Sasha kaun’s mustache is killing me.
We’ll have to start calling him Genghis Kaun…
Still think DB needs a primer on time out usage…
Can we make free throws finally?!?!
Yes Mo can!!!!!!!
LeBron is at 46 minutes. Yikes. With another tomorrow night.
Yeah he may not even play tomorrow
He only has 39 minutes in ESPN’s box score.
That makes way more sense. Something must be up with cbssports. They are trolling me.
Yeah, it’s only 39…
That number is wrong.
Alright, alright everyone. Calm down. My cbssports app is broken.
I love how Delly doesn’t need help in the post… Afflalo hit a tough shot the first time… but the Wombat won the next one!
That’s just Pure Delly.
I’d like to see Cols try to cover Afflalo.
Also Loved seeing Delly run the KRAKEN even LBJ didn’t get the call
Why call a timeout there?
Mo our only really reliable free throw shooter had the ball in his hands. Can’t understand.
The knicks had him trapped in the corner and were out of position.
It was just one Knick ready to foul him. Same result thouggh.
Hmmmm, in order to win this game, Cavs will………………… have to make free throws
Big shot from mo ,thank God . Cavs ga step up and make their damm free throws now .shut the door on Knicks
The Wombat is fierce in the post.
As James and Carmelo wrestle away from the ball at the top of the key, mid-range Mo calmly puts he Cavs in front.
Another new Nickname alert: “Midrange Mo!”
tenacious Delly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
New Delly Nickname alert: Tenacious D! And, we can hire the band to sing the national anthem at the Finals!
Celtics beat the Hawks…
Ok, whose arm did Olynyk rip out its socket to make that possible?
Probably his own… and he went around clubbing people with it…
Even if the Cavs find a way to win this one the coaching staff needs to work on this team offense again and the FT’s too.
Well well buss my face ,lets see how this game ends
Lebron is good at basketball.
Wow! Iman’s red jacket burned out my retinas!
Ladies and gentlemen, this is still Lebron James’ league
That was a big-time shot after all his misses.
LBJ in hero mode that was his best Jordan impersonation.
How is Chaka playing like this in crunch time?
ALSO NOTICE WE ONLY HAVE (12) HALF OF WHAT OUR GAME AVG / ASSISTS —NOT MOVING ( BOTH PLAYERS AND BALL ) SETTLING FOR 3 PT SHOT THAT ISN’T GOING IN ——-GLAD MY HIGH SCHOOL TEAM PERFORMED WELL TONIGHT OR IT MIGHT BE A LONG NIGHT WITH ” DR JACK “
Take it to the bucket Lebron! Getting it done on both ends of the floor
Cavs have now missed almost as many free throws as they’ve made…
2 minute fight.
Melo is losing this game for them by going one on one
Love had an inadvertent kick to Porzingis’s nether regions on a replay of that anything-goes stretch.
To be honest I’m impressed about how well the Knicks are playing defense but the Cavs should not be at this position at this point in the game.
Lotta whistle swallowing on that last exchange…
@MrCavalier34: It’s called letting them play but enough is enough, at least they let it go both ways
Nice heads up by JR to spot a cherry picking king.
As little fun as this game has been to watch, Lebron seems to be having a great time out there
THIS KIND OF GAME / LACK OF EFFORT IS WHEN ” UNCLE DAN ” CAN BE PISSED AT THE MONEY HE DISHED OUT FOR THESE PLAYERS TO PERFORM ( FOUL SHOTS INCLUDED )
The game turned into an MMA cage match for a couple possessions there.
It was a weird kind of pretty though..
How was that NOT a foul?! On both ends actually? Lebron got mauled and then Porzingis got fouled too
Not before he went over the back.
That was a stretch of crap officiating.
Lebron just beat the refs at basketball
Delly shoulda reposted to Love there on a mismatch.
Again missing a ton of Free Throws……
Lebron really stepping up the intensity on D, love it!
Cavs would do much better running against this team… too much plodding offense…
Big three from Goosie…
Cavs down to 52% from the line… unacceptable…
At this point the Knicks can employ the hack-a-anyone apparently cuz we can’t make the freebies
HAD A BASKETBALL SCRIMMAGE( JUST GOT IN )—WHAT’S UP WITH LOVE –PORZINGIS HEIGTH BOTHERING HIM—GO CAVS !!
Just missing shots.
We are clamping down way too late. They already have confidence they can beat us. It will take a special stretch defensively to win this one…which is stupid cuz it’s the knocks
Good inadvertent nickname… The Knocks…
So what happened to the new offense?
Thanks God these are the NY Knicks…….
Yep… just 11 assists… although the sheer amount of missed shots is also impacting that…
That’s it! Work the ball inside to Moz…
Real nice hustle by Mozzy to get great post position.
