Recap: Cavs 109, Hawks 97 (Or, The Wing Clippers)
2015-11-22The Hawks came into Cleveland and received some disheartening news. The King and his men planned on clipping their wings. The Hawks tried to resist, but after two quarters of action, the Cavs led by 15 points and had them tethered by the leg, struggling to get back into the air. The Wine and Gold led by as many as 26 points in the third, caging the Hawks and successfully clipping their wings, on their way to a 12 point win (19 if the game ended when garbage time started).
All five Cavalier starters scored at least ten, except Tristan Thompson, who scored just nine but grabbed 16 boards (six offensive) and dished five assists. Kevin Love put up 25 points and 11 boards, but LeBron James, in usual fashion, put up a near triple-double. He finished the game with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. Paul Millsap and Kyle Korver were the highest scoring Hawks with just 14 points each on a combined 8-22 shooting. The Cavs were able to tame the Hawks holding them to just 37.2% from the field for the evening.
First Quarter
The Cavs started the first quarter trying to feed Love in the post. Love managed to get ten points on 4-5 shooting hitting a three, two quick hook shots, and a smooth mid-range jumper. The Cavalier defense seemed to live with Thabo Sefolosha taking shots. He scored six. The Hawks took ten threes, all of which were pretty much open. Thankfully, they hit just three of them. They were penetrating sufficiently to force an extra Cavalier into the paint and off of a man at the 3-line. The Cavs finished the final four minutes of action on an 8-2 run, with Anderson Varejao hitting his automatic foul line jumper and driving in for two free throws. LeBron actually scored zero in the quarter. After one the Cavs led, 27-19.
Second Quarter
The second quarter started out with Matthew Dellavedova turning into Kareem. With Dennis Schroder on him, Delly decided to host a post clinic. He backed him into the paint on the left side of the floor, LeBron style, and missed a gimme hook shot. It was fun seeing Delly treat Schroder like a rookie. Later in the quarter, Delly would get fouled for two freebies on the same exact play. J.R. got hot early on and swished two threes to put the Cavs up by 13. The Cavs held onto that lead the entire quarter.

Midway through the action, Mike Budenholzer objected a little too much to the clipping of his beloved Hawks’ wings. He bumped into a referee at mid-court and was immediately ejected. Delly was talking to the refs after the play, and one could see a smirk clearly forming. His mustache wasn’t thick enough to hide it.
LeBron had five in the quarter, including a post move where he spun past Thabo and then waited under the hoop for a full second, as Mike Muscala flew by, before laying in the ball. RJ had eight points. The Cavs were whipping the ball around and had six assists on 11 shots. Their defense turned into a pneumatic vice grip, and the Hawks shot 38% from the floor. The Wine and Gold started switching on more off ball screens, and committed to running guys off the 3-line. The Hawks took just four threes, and the Cavs led 57-42 going into the locker room.
Third Quarter
The Cavs opened the quarter forcing Jeff Teaque into a wild shot which ricocheted off the backboard. A few possessions later, Love successfully closed out on a Paul Millsap 3-pointer. He sprinted down court as the soon the shot was up, and LeBron grabbed a rebound and pretended to be Joe Flacco. The next possession Delly grabbed a board and threw a bomb to James to put the Cavs up by 22. The Cavs would lead by as many as 26 points in the quarter.

The Hawks scored just five points in the first six minutes of the quarter, but managed a little run when LeBron got called for a tech for heading to the bench before a legal substitution stoppage had occurred. Kyle Korver sank the technical free throw and then nailed two threes in a row after running around screens. That started an 18-5 run. The Cavs just couldn’t hit shots and turned the ball over six times in the quarter leading to nine Atlanta points. The Hawks entered the forth down by just 13. Cavs lead, 64-77.
Fourth Quarter
Sensing the Cavs were in trouble, David Blatt procured some hard candy during the break before the fourth quarter for old man James Jones. Sucking on a Werthers, James Freaking Jones, dropped two assisted three pointers in a row, before blocking Thabo Sefolosha from behind at the rim. Then the King went to work for the Cavs scoring six straight unassisted points to increase the lead to 19. He had ten points in the quarter and three assists.

The moment of the quarter came when Paul Millsap led with his knee and blasted Kevin Love in his groin. Love crumbled to the ground and looked devastated, as a blocking foul was called against him. Fortunately, he stood up after a minute and sprinted down the court while wincing. He got his revenge by getting a back cut on Mike Muscala and a quick post hook over him. With three minutes left the Cavs led by 19 points, and the bench started rotating in. Jared Cunningham finished the game with a dunk. Cavs win, 109-97.
Gripes
1. The Cavs’ first quarter defense was a little misguided letting the Hawks shoot ten shots from 3-point land. Atlanta was 39% from deep and 38% from the field in the first. The Cavs kept forgetting to chase guys off the line.
2. In the third quarter, the Cavs got sloppy with the ball, turning it over six times. Throughout the game, the team passed the ball lazily. The Hawks often got a hand on it, but were unable to gain control of it, which helped the Cavs immensely. LeBron had three turnovers, but it seemed like a lot of his passes weren’t being thrown as hard as they should have been.
3. The Atlanta uniforms use the exact same colors as McDonalds does. I now want McDonalds, which is never a good thing.
Hypes
1. Kevin Love’s defense was very good this game. In the first quarter, he got called for a phantom foul on Millsap. Millsap was backing him down and Love stripped the ball cleanly. A little later in the first, Al Horford tried pulling a spin move on Love. Love held his ground and bodied him. Horford missed the shot. Millsap and Horford combined for just 24 points, hitting just seven of their 25 shots.
2. Love also found his spot in the post early and often this game. He was sprinting down the floor after almost every rebound tonight.
4. Tristan had 16 freaking rebounds, and six of them were offensive boards (which led to eight points). He’s a non-stop hustle machine, who also happens to defend the rim quite well. The Hawks made just 18.2% of their shots at the rim when met by TT. They only made 16.7% when Love showed up to stop them.
5. The Cavs out rebounded the Hawks by 13 boards. TT and Kevin combined for 27 rebounds.
6. Defensively, the Cavs switched up their schemes all night. They were going under some screens, over on others, and even switching occasionally. They held the Hawks to 37% from the field, and that tells me that they are communicating with each other when they’re on the floor. The only way you get away with switching up your pick and roll coverage like that is by talking non-stop and letting every one around you know what you’re doing.
7. Offensively, the Cavs were whipping the ball around. They assisted on 27 of their 41 made shots. They are becoming really awesome at passing the ball from the strong side of the court to the weak side corner to get defenses scrambling. That pass starts a barrage of other passes around the perimeter until someone gets open for a 3-pointer or easy drive to the rim. Opposing defenses panic as they try to follow the ball. The Cavs seem to always have someone in the weak side corner ready to start torturing defenses.
8. Richard Jefferson was the recipient of this type of pass twice in the second quarter when he went on a six point scoring binge. Both times he was run off the 3-line. The first time he elevated from ten feet out for what seriously looked like a dunk attempt, but was just a nifty banker layup. The second time he ran under the hoop for a reverse layup. J.R. threw the pass both times.
9. Speaking of J.R. he hit four threes on his way to 15 points and five assists. He surely contributed to the Cavs shooting 48% from the field.
10. Delly had 12 points, three assists, and five secondary assists, while being a game high +26 in plus-minus. He varied his offense tonight. He not only backed down Schroder twice, he even used his hesitation dribble to get into the paint and throw a floater in over Al Horford, who was waiting for a lob. He exploded Canadian TnT with a dime and made the only three he took. The Cavs really relied on him to move the ball around the perimeter.
11. The Cavs seem to have their free throw shooting back on track. They hit 16 of their 19 attempts tonight.
The Cavs successfully clipped the Hawks’ wings tonight, and should be riding high as they prepare to face the Magic on Monday.
The word on MDN is he is fast, plays defense, and makes ONLY tunrovers of aggression…he’s basically Dion without a jumper with a better head on his shoulders. Why would you not want that coming off the bench for spot minutes?
Has everyone noticed that the east still has winning records through 11 teams while the west has them through 6? It likely will change as playoff teams out west are losing for weird reasons but it is likely to be far more even this year.
Because he’s the 7th best guard we have. And the first 6 are all good NBA players while Cunningham is a D-league all-star
Agree with you and goes with what I said. He’d be valuable for spot minutes. Obviously no one is looking for him to play 8-10 a night. But the energy level and defense would help in space stars lineup moments. Give a starter or key sub a breather while he runs around and tries to make something happen. Way better than Joe Harris missing corner 3s and being limited in every other aspect of the game.
MDN is very quick and is very strong on defending guards. It may help in the playoffs (finals?) when in-your-face defense (that type that Delly played in the first couple of finals games against GSW) is needed. It would help to have multiple players who can do that (share the burden). We saw how it was too much for one person to maintain that level for a full series.
Although…after reading the above comments, I don’t see similar enthusiasm for what MDN can offer. I think at his current level of proficiency he still has a way to go. But he does have great athletic ability and it seems like, with some minor adjustments, he could be a very good addition.
Understating MDN’s soul sucking dunk. I think he will be valuable this season and for minutes in the playoffs.
I agree. MDN seems to have great potential. If he could score more regularly (more reliable from deep and finishing) he could be an incredible addition….great defense already. Would love to see him “figure it out” this year with the Cavs.
I kinda view MDN as a more athletic, less in-control, version of Shump.
I hear you, but I view him as more of a ‘not on an NBA roster’ version of Shump. Shump does everything way better.
I really don’t see it that way. I’ll be surprised if he’s on the team after Shump is back, whenever that is. I honestly can’t imagine the Cavs want him seeing important playoff minutes.
He shouldn’t get any important playoff minutes (barring injury, obviously). But if we cut him and keep Joe Harris, I just don’t get it.
I’d keep him over Harris, it’s just the Harris contract situation. I wouldn’t want either of them playing a minute against the Warriors, just for instance.
I understand the Harris contract thing, but with all the money Gilbert is spending, does it really make sense to care about that? It’s penny-wise, pound-foolish as far as he’s concerned. The more important thing is to justify his huge investment in the team by keeping it as strong as possible.
I can’t imagine a scenrio that we aren’t winning by 30 or have a series of injuries where Cunningham gets minutes. He is way behind Irving, Mo Delly, Shump, JR and Jefferson in the guard rotation. All those guys are excellenct NBA players. Cunningham is a project if we keep him
Brad Daugherty doing the analysis before the game.
Go Denver! Screw the Dubs.
Eh, I kinda like the idea of the Warriors going undefeated until Christmas.
LAST YEAR IT WAS THE THEME “ALL IN “—-IS THIS YEARS THEME ( WITH THE HUDDLE APPROACH DURING INTRO’S ) ” ALL BUSINESS/ FOCUS “—LIKE THE IDEA —CAVS FANS NEED TO COME UP WITH AN IDEA / GESTURE TO SUPPORT THIS IDEA / CONCEPT ——–DO WE ALL STAND UP AND BE QUIET —–NEED SOME IDEAS FROM ALL OF YOU CTB BROTHERS
THE PENDULUM OF LEAGUE STRENGTH IS STARTING TO TILT TO THE EAST —TORONTO BEATS THE CLIPPERS ON THEIR COURT ( THEY ARE NOW 6-7 WHAT’S UP WITH THAT ?)—–ESPN BOUGHT THE RIGHTS TO TELEVISE THE GOLDEN STATE / DENVER GAME TONIGHT —WARRIORS GOING FOR RECORD
BLATT HAS A “MAN CRUSH ” ON DELLY/ JUST LOVES THE KID —–DELLY RIGHT NOW PLAYING FOR A NICE CONTRACT IN THE OFF SEASON ( HOPE IT IS WITH THE CAVS )
He is his NBA son. No, really he is feeling vindicated by Delly’s play as the media was very harsh last year on both Delly & for Blatt playing him. Who doesn’t like a hard worker like that guy ?
@DavidZavac: In 91 minutes, lineups with Delly, LeBron, Love and Tristan are outscoring teams by 42.2 pts/100 possessions.
wow. Delly is really elevating the play of Love and Lebron.
Why didn’t we throw deep??? Or even medium? Ugh. So angry
Or just give it to zeke. Embarrassing loss
If that had been a Tressel game, for as much crap as he got about ‘Tresselball!!’, he would have run Zeke 40 times in that crap weather and probably won the game. Instead, MSU Tresselballs OSU once again. Hard to understand what the offensive gameplan was for this game.
They didn’t play like a playoff team all year, so i’m not really upset by the loss. They didn’t deserve to make it.
Hey! Col must be an OSU fan. Anyway, I think we should be happy for the title last year, and secretly admit it was a fluke. The Buckeyes got on a roll the last couple months and played great. At NO point this year have they played very good. One theory I hear is that last year’s OC (now HC at Houston) was the smarts last year, and this year they have a dud (still waiting for Cols to point out that he sucks). Also, it is clear that neither QB is close to being all league, let alone good… Read more »
How many I formations have they used all year? The Power Run Game was what won us the ship, totally abandoned it this year
It really is baffling. Yes, Tom Herman was the genius behind our dazzling offense last year. But you don’t have to be a genius to see that the only effective drive he had was the drive we handed it to Zeke over and over again. The conditions were terrible and we had a couple dropped passes but he sill could have done some quick slants to open things up the slightest bit. My guess is Ed Warinner (our current OC) is replaced this summer. While I don’t think Zeke should have made the comments (I’m a keep it in the… Read more »
I have no problem with zeke saying it because he did keep it in the locker room for so long. This was a year long theme
True enough, I feel bad for a lot of our last year guys. Not a great way to end your career as a Buckeye.
Great job DW. First game this year I couldn’t watch in its entirety, had to go with the NBA LP condensed version. Glad you mentioned RJ. He is so effective once he gets the skip pass to the weak side. Uses the shot fake to perfection and finishes very well for his lack of quickness. Earl III Smith has his confidence back and it’s beautiful, and is still working hard on D. His effort on Korver was great, as Blatt mentioned in the post game. The losses to Milwaukee and Detroit back to back didn’t matter. We picked apart a… Read more »
Did anybody notice how well the offense flowed with Delly running it, in contrast with people setting picks and running around to get open with Cunningham running it? This is not a knock on Cunningham, who has only been here a short time and has a lot to learn. The flow of the offense is a non-measurable talent of Delly’s – except in terms of +/-. I think it points to an extremely high basketball IQ. You get certain groups of players in there together now and it’s like a dance, with everybody reading each others’ minds. It’s the chemistry… Read more »
Kyle Korver.
That guy’s been a great shooter ever since. But I know he didn’t have that fast release from the get go. His release was slower back then (Philly, Utah, Chicago days).. And I’m surprised to know he’s already 35!
Werthers all round then.
Gripes 1. We also use the same McDonald’s colors except for the navy. But ATL’s unis are hideous. They use neon btw.. 2. Nothing else.. Hypes 1. Hopefully Love stays playing that way. Great game from him. 2. We’re deep. That RJ signing was very underrated. I for one, back in the offseason, was really hoping we sign guy that could really spell Lebron’s minutes and in RJ I think we found the one. 3. We’re not playing the fastest pace out there but I really like how we move the ball now. Same with player activity on the floor.… Read more »
on hype 3. The Cavs don’t play the fastest pace, but they are a constant threat to run, which is almost better. They have the benefits a fast pace gives, without all the risk.
I don’t like making fun of old people, but that roast on JFJ with the Werther’s plug was gold.
I too enjoyed the hard candy jokes. I dont have any objection to making fun of old people.
Also, I think the Rockets unis look more like McDonalds. But those Hawks unis are awful.
Per Sam Amico —- Speaking of Irving, excellent ESPN beat guy Dave McMenamin reported Irving played James in a one-dribble-only game of one-on-one Saturday. According to McMenamin’s source, Irving “destroyed” LeBron in one of the games. The two Cavs stars played a best-of-five set, per the report. No matter how you spin it, this is good news for the Cavs. Irving’s return to full health will only make a really good team even better, and likely even more inspired
I like the assist numbers from TT. I hate to say it it, but with the one drive and kick he reminded me of Draymond Green.
Hopefully thats a sign of growth but more likely a fluke. My biggest gripe with him has always been that he an awful passer
I really think the Cavs are a horrible match up for the Hawks. The Cavs have elite rebounding, and the Hawks I believe are ranked 29th in the league. I thought Sefolosha did a solid job bothering LeBron, and he (LeBron) looked “fairly human,” but it didn’t matter much. I really like what I’m seeing from Delly. What’s important to remember is that he doesn’t make many mistakes. I trust him much more on offense than Mo. Yes, Mo can get his own shot and drill those midrange twos, but sometimes those early shots are misses and bail out the… Read more »
Delly had pretty much a mistake free game. Great defense all night. I saw that the Cavs are 15.4 points per 100 possesions better on defense when he’s on the floor. That probably has to do with him getting to play with TT a ton but he has been great this year. And I agree about the offense running better with Delly especially since Mo plays with LBJ and Love more. That mid ranger is deadly but there’s a reason its the least desirable shot in basketball. He’ll be a great scorer off the bench once Kyrie gets healthy though.… Read more »
Love is looking more comfortable in areas he can lead. So much confidence is a good look. I am surprised there isn’t more talk about his improvements this year. I don’t know if people just expect it or what it is. He’s playing to All Star caliber.
