Podcast Episode 79: Curing the Holiday Blues

Cavs got you down? After a tough loss in Oakland and a terrible performance in Portland, they sure had us down; so Tom, EvilGenius and I decided to commiserate via podcast. So many questions were asked and answered. Are the Cavs holiday blues temporary or more systemic? Why are the paths of prospective free agents Timofey Mozgov and Matthew Dellavedova so divergent right now? What would Pop do (with this Cavs team)? Is the problem Blatt or LeBron? Are the Warriors beneficiaries of a relatively weak NBA? We also made some Cavalier New Year’s resolutions, talked about the Holidays, and even discussed Star Wars: Episode VII. Hope you enjoy and have a great week and a great New Year. (You might want to skip the last two minutes if you’re worried about a potential Force Awakens spoiler).
I think Mo and James Jones together is worse.
The last two games have been very disappointing, but I doubt if the sky is falling. When you are a top seed, the regular season is all about getting things figured out, ducks in a line, etc., for the playoffs. In the GSW game, KI started rather than MD due to seniority and history. Hopefully in a week or two KI will be up to MD’s level, but he is not close yet. Likewise, Mo got in the game, and MDN didn’t. We love Mo, and he has a long history with us, but that is not going all out… Read more »
MEADOWLARK LEMON PASSES–83 —-WOW I REMEMBER SEEING HIM IN PERSON AND THEN GOING HOME TRYING TO PERFECT ” HIS MAGIC ” ( AND ALSO TRYING TO PEFECT AT HIGH SCHOOL PRACTICE —MUCH TO THE CHAGRIN OF MY COACH )
Christmas back-to-back is horrible scheduling.
There have been happy-talk podcasts in the past.
Lots to agree with in the podcast. Porzingas looks great.
Delly and TT work better because there dominant hands match (Delly’s right -> TT’s left). Moz isn’t as good a lob target. I’d like to see Delly go for a few more interior bounce or straight passes and cut back the lob a notch.
Looking to see Cavs get back on their game tonight.
A 4-in-5 road trip starting on Christmas is particularly horrible scheduling. Wouldn’t be surprised if that contributed to the team’s frame of mind in the Portland game. They are human, after all.
COLS I THINK THIS WHOLE CTB IN GENERAL IS VERY POSITIVE —BUT ALSO WE DO LIVE IN A REAL WORLD AND WHEN PLAYERS / TEAMS ” LAYS AN EGG ” LIKE THEY DID SAT NIGHT —THEY NEED TO BE ” CALLED OUT ” AND REALIZE WE ARE UPSET WITH ( NOT SO MUCH THE OUTCOME ) BUT THE TOTAL LACK OF EFORT ( THIS HAPPENS AT ALL LEVELS–I HAVE BEEN COACHING HIGH SCHOOL BALL FOR ABOUT 30 YRS —WHEN WE PERFORM LIKE THE CAVS DID SAT NIGHT —THEY KNOW I AM NOT A HAPPY CAMPER !!!—ALSO DISAGREE WITH YOU THAT… Read more »
Go figure, Nate doesn’t like Star Wars.
This made me laugh out loud.
I bet you Delly likes Star Wars though.
Zing! Well done, Arch.
Love star wars and empire. Jedi is good. Sith is ok. Force awakens is meh, and episodes one and two blow.
Episodes ranked
1. Empire
2. A new Hope
3. Force Awakens

Cols, you sure do love lists. In your day job, do you put together listicles for Buzzfeed or something?
Why can’t CtPB ever do a podcast when the team is on a winning streak? The podcasts always come out after a tough loss and we get to hear how terrible the teams is and how it is so awful to have the best player in the NBA on your favorite team.
I can’t decide if I should listen to this or if it will just drive me nuts.
Do you have statistics to back this up?
It’ll drive you nuts.
Ugh. Make the next one after LeBron goes for 40 or after a winning streak then. I like CtP, but not if it’s full of pessimists and complainers.
What is the positive hot take after they lost by 30 to a mediocre team when playing their starters?
Easy. They almost beat the Warriors despite shooting like crap and despite the narrative around here they passed the ball more than the Warriors so they played their offense nicely just couldn’t make any shots. Easy, they still have the best player in the NBA near his prime. Easy, they still have a coach who made crazy awesome adjustments in nearly sweeping their way to the Finals without two of their top 3 players. Easy, they are still shoe-ins for the Finals. Easy, their defense vs the Warriors was spectacular. Their are so many positives to take from this team,… Read more »
All due respect, Cols, but we generally tell it like it is… we dole out the positives and negatives whenever and wherever warranted… If you want a constant happy shiny take on things, then you’re forever going to be disappointed…
I’d like to think I had a generally positive outlook… maybe too much so on listening to what I said…
On Dec 6 I wrote: “This game probably doesn’t matter. However, seeing the GSW take every game super seriously is scary. Not sure this matters in the end, but I would feel more confident as a GSW fan.”
I still feel the same. The Cavs theoretically can dominate and anyone and beat the Warriors in the Finals. They are currently sloppy and seem to act like they can simply turn it on when they need to. This is disheartening, and scares me because I think habitually trying to dominate is a trait of championship teams.
I haven’t listened yet, but why can’t you guys just all do the Chris Farley thing where you all say, “remember when Lebron did that drive and layed it in? That was awesome!”. Why all the negative waves, man?
(I am joking, of course)
I listen to practically all the podcasts. It’s not true at all, the claim that podcasts done on losses. You made a preconceived judgment without even listening to the podcast. How is that a fair assessment?
Mel Gibson had a better line in “Ransom” when he said “GIVE ME BACK MY SON!”
Regarding Delly —- Isn’t Delly also restricted for next season?
Yes, but still a free agent of some sort.
True… but his play this year vs. last year should garner him an offer sheet that the Cavs will have to decide whether or not to match…
Always glad to hear the podcast; thanks for doing it. Since success can be defined as doing the small stuff right, a Christmas spelling tip: Timo & Delly are not “perspective free agents” but “prospective” free agents. Not to worry, the copy editing for CtB is still superior to the competition. Chris Haynes writes with the accuracy and emotional intelligence of a moody teen, and Chris Parker’s prose for Cleveland _Scene_, while wonderfully jumbled and often hilarious, is a metaphorical train wreck. BTW I’m sort of hoping that Detroit gets good enough this year to be the 8th seed; something… Read more »
Quite right. Thanks for the correction. That’s a mistake I’ve been making for some time.
Wait the Cavs have the world’s best basketball player??? Wow nobody told me…
Sweet. I will listen tomorrow on my drive to my parents.
“….and there goes Tom…..”
Great stuff guys. And awful news about Burkes, really enjoy watching him play.
