Recap: Cavs 110, Mavs 107 (Or, Down To The Final Minute, Twice)
2016-01-13The Cavs grinded out their eighth straight win tonight against the Mavs. They shot just 41.2% from the field, while the Mavs shot 49.4%. They dropped 17 3-pointers to help even the game out. With 1.9 seconds left in regulation, the Cavs had a chance to win, but they were unable to inbound the ball cleanly for a quality shot. It took the Cavs all the way until the final 13 seconds of overtime to ensure victory tonight. With 13 seconds left, the Mavs were down by four and Deron Williams had the ball. He started to go up for his shot to bring the Mavs within two, but Iman Shumpert stripped the ball from him. The Cavs then waddled to a 110-107 victory.
While Kyrie Irving scored eight points in the fourth quarter to help the Cavs take the game to overtime, and LeBron James scored five and dished out three assists for seven points in overtime to get the win, Timofey Mozgov was the Cavs’ true star tonight. He was +18 in 20 minutes of action and was 4-6 for ten points. He also had nine boards (four offensive) and ran the floor like the Mozgov of last season. He provided the Cavs with a much needed spark in the first quarter to chip into a 16 point Dallas lead, which was established in the first seven minutes of the game. Without Timo’s energy, the Cavs would have been dead before the second quarter had even started.
First Quarter
Dirk scored a two on the Mavs’ first possession by running off of a Zaza Pachulia screen. The Cavs then tried to trap the German the next play, and he found Zaza for a smooth jumper. The Cavs clearly feared Dirk early on and it showed. Chandler Parsons had an easy cut to the rim just minutes into the quarter, as LeBron watched Dirk instead of him. In the first six minutes of play, Dirk scored or earned an assist on 11 of the Mavs’ 20 points. Meanwhile, the Cavs put up just seven points and seemed to be incapable of scoring. Kevin Love was 0-5 to start the game. The Cavs were down by as many as 16 points in the first seven minutes and shot just 33% from the floor for the quarter.
First timeout didn’t do much good, so #Cavs try another one. Not shooting, not defending. Bad combination, trail 23-7 early

However, they killed much of the Mavs’ lead in the final four minutes of play with a 15-2 run. Timofey Mozgov was the leader of the come back. He had an offensive rebound that led to a J.R. Smith 3-pointer, and he also blocked a Wes Matthews shot, which led to him receiving a Delly lob. He dunked so hard Austin Carr almost apologized for all the times he complained about him “being weak.” And, fianlly, Timo grabbed another offensive board that eventually led to a Delly trey. Cavs down, 25-22.
Second Quarter
The second quarter started out just how you would expect when JaVale McGee is playing minutes against your team. He JaFailed when he tipped in a ball that was almost all the way down and got called for basket interference. It didn’t matter though, as the Mavs went on a 7-2 run to lead 32-24 with eight minutes to go till halftime. Kyrie let J.J. Barea blast by him coming off of a screen, and then he ran into him the Mavs’ next possession, giving him two free throws. The Cavs still weren’t able to score this quarter hitting just 37.5% from the floor. Eight of their 25 points were off of steals. The Mavs shot 55% from the floor dropping ten of their 18 tries.

The Cavs went on 10-8 run in the final two minutes of the quarter. Delly made the tiny run worth noting. As the Mavs played a 3-2 zone, Delly glided to a soft area on the right side of the court above the 3-point line. The King tossed him the ball, and he nailed a long ball. Delly then hounded Deron Williams after the ball was inbounded and got a steal. He immediately hit another 3-pointer. All of that took place in the span of eight seconds. Felton then played like his actual body weight and went big to score a jumper over LeBron to end the quarter. The Cavs went into the half down, 52-47.
Third Quarter
Irving started the quarter out right forcing Williams to turn the ball over. Smith then came down the court and hit a 3-pointer off of Kyrie’s pass. Williams had the last laugh though coming back and passing to both Chandler Parsons and Wesley Matthews for open 3-pointers. Neither team managed to shoot particularly well though this quarter, with the Cavs hitting 3-11 3s and the Mavs hitting 2-7. The Cavs managed just two points of off four turnovers.
With 4:07 left in the quarter, Delly was called for a phantom foul on Deron Williams. He honestly didn’t touch him at all in the replay. The ball lied though and Deron made both of his free throws, Mavs 67-55. The Cavs were bailed out the next play, as LeBron plowed into a Dallas player and wasn’t called for it. He then passed to the ball to Shumpert, who played ping pong with J.R. Smith for second before draining a shot from beyond the arc. A few minutes later, Delly hit LeBron cutting to the rim for an easy two. A few plays later he threw a lob to Moz, which was flushed down easily. Kyrie scored a layup to end the quarter, but the Cavs were still down, 72-67.
Fourth Quarter
The Cavs figured out that driving the ball leads to easy buckets. Kyrie opened the quarter penetrating for a layup. He missed it, but Mozgov grabbed it and passed it out. RJ received the ball and Dallas’s defense was scrambling, so he put it on the floor, blew by Dirk, and slammed it hard. Dirk missed a jumper the next play. and the Cavs sprinted down the floor. Kyrie found Delly for a 3-pointer to tie the game at 72. Kyrie continued to slice apart the Maverick’s defense, so he could kick the ball out to open guys for easy buckets. He had two assists and eight points in the quarter.
LeBron also used his post-up gravity to generate clear passing lanes for the Cavs. He had one assist in the quarter.
The two teams traded buckets up until the 6:09 mark. LeBron then posted up and found Kyrie for a 3-pointer to put the Cavs up, 85-83. The next play Chandler Parsons threw a bad pass, which the King grabbed. The King found Love in the post, and then ran down the lane. Love tossed him the ball, as Mozgov was cutting in from the baseline. Mozzy received a touch pass and tried to go up with two hands. He got fouled and made two free throws to put Cavs up by four. Mozzy gave it back though by fouling Zaza the next play.
The Cavs then went on to have one possession with four offensive boards, three courtesy of Love, that resulted in two points. The next play the Mavs missed, and the Cavs had a possession with two offensive boards, which resulted in no points. With 3:19 left the score was 89-85. Despite all the offensive rebounding, the Mavs didn’t give up. Wes Matthews hit two threes in a row, and went to the line for two free ones, after blowing by J.R. Smith, to put the Mavs up 93-91 with 39 seconds left.
LeBron then brought the ball up the floor and dribbled towards Parsons. He picked the ball up and Parsons hit him as he took his two steps to the rim and laid the ball in. The refs called the foul on the floor though, and LeBron was denied the continuation 3-point play chance. Luckily, the King hit both free throws to tie the game at 93. Deron Williams then took a Dirk pick and got TT on him, which led to an easy layup to put the Mavs up 95-93. The Cavs were forced to call a time out.
LeBron takes it VICIOUSLY to the rack to tie the game! https://t.co/w1GSeSzC6O
— Cavaliers Nation (@WeAreCavsNation) January 13, 2016
Out of the timeout the, LeBron got the ball. Irving and Love both set a screen for him, and he had a clear path to the rim. He looked at the rim and muttered, “you’re next” as he powered towards it and threw the ball into it. Unfortunately for Devin Harris, the King didn’t notice he was under the hoop and acted as if nothing happened when their bodies collided mid-air. The refs pretended they were LeBron too and ignored the contact. With 20 seconds left, the Mavs called a timeout and ran a play for Dirk. Dirk used a screen and got Iman Shumpert on him. I screamed in agony, as I watched Dirk prepare for his classic turnaround “j” from the foul line. He couldn’t get it off though. Shump stripped the ball from him as he turned towards the hoop looking to making space. The Cavs were unable to score with their extra chance, and the game went to overtime.
Overtime
The Cavs decided to play overtime with their small ball unit of Irving, Smith, Delly, James, and Love, while Dallas played their regular starting lineup. The Cavs started in odd fashion. After seeing how well driving the ball against the Mavs worked, LeBron still decided to jack up a 3-pointer, which he missed. Dirk nailed his 3-ball on the other end. The Cavs and Mavs traded baskets until about a minute and a half was left to play.
At that point, LeBron decided the Cavs were winning with the Mavs up 103-102. Deron Williams drove to the hoop from the right side of the floor, and the King ran all the way from the left corner to contest Williams at the rim. Williams tossed the rock too high on the glass. Irving rebounded the ball, and passed it to James. Then he sprinted down the lane and James found him for a layup to put the Cavs up by one. A few plays later with the Cavs up 106-105, LeBron used an Irving screen and Williams ended up on him. He backed Williams into the paint, and Williams acted like LeBron let off a mini explosion from his back, as he dropped to the ground trying to draw a foul. With no one near him, the King looked at the hoop for a second.
KYRIE IRVING ?????? #CavsNation #Cavs #Mavs #NBA https://t.co/X55VN50MJj
— Cavs Nation (@CavsNationNet) January 13, 2016
He then saw Kyrie behind the arc and gave him the ball. Irving hit the 3-pointer to put the Cavs up by four with 13 seconds to go till victory. Iman ensured the win when he stripped Williams the next trip down the floor.
Gripes
1.The Cavs defense against the Mavs’ pick and roll play made no sense much of the game. In the first quarter, they kept doubling the ball handler, and it just didn’t work out, as Deron Williams is a pretty good passer. Sometimes, they tried to double team Dirk or Zaza, which also didn’t work seeing as they are two of the best play making bigs in the game. Once Mozgov came into the game, the Cavs calmed down a little bit because he doesn’t allow them to trap as much.
2. Kyrie is improving on the defensive end, but I still notice he is often behind his man sort of chasing him at times. Irving has gotten better at making something out of the plays where he’s doing that, but chasing your guy from behind isn’t a recipe for success.
3. Chandler Parsons went off for 24 points knocking down ten of his 14 shots. LeBron was often the man guarding him tonight, and that’s just not acceptable. The King needs to set a better example for the team. In the first quarter, Parsons cut behind LeBron as LeBron was watching what Dirk was doing. That’s an amateur way to get beat. LeBron also got beat in overtime by Dirk for a 3-pointer when he was cheating into the paint for a rebound, and the Mavs made an extra pass.
4. The Cavs had 28 assists on 40 made shots, which is pretty dang good. However, the Cavs still had possessions where the ball stuck with one guy. Usually those possessions were LeIsos where LeBron got the ball, dribbled for 13 seconds, and launched a three. There were some plays in transition though where the Cavs should have stopped the ball and set up the offense, instead of taking a difficult unassisted shot.
Hypes
1.The Cavs shot just 41.2% from the field, while the Mavs shot 47.4%. They still won though because they kept manufacturing good 3-point looks. They took 44 3-pointers and hit 17 of them. The Mavs made just 11 deep balls.
2. The Cavs got 17 offensive boards and scored 15 points off of them, which helped them when they couldn’t score a basket in their half-court sets.
3.Kyrie scored 20 points on 8-20 shooting, which isn’t very efficient. However, he influenced the game by driving into the paint and collapsing Dallas’s defense, so he could dish out nine assists. Love struggled to score too putting up just 15 points and hitting just three of his nine 3-pointers. He did grab six offensive boards and five defensive boards though.
4. The Wine & Gold had just ten turnovers, which led to only 12 points. It’s a lot easier to shoot the ball poorly and still win when you’re protecting the ball.
5. Iman Shumpert showed how clutch he was with his strip of Dirk at the end or regulation to get the Cavs the final shot and his strip of Deron Williams at the end of overtime to prevent the Mavs from getting within striking distance. Shump only scored ten points, but it didn’t mess with his defense at all. He had three steals this evening.
6. Delly was a team high +21 tonight.
7. The King shot 50% from 3-point land on six shots and scored 27 points. He also had ten rebounds and seven assists.
8. The Cavs face the Spurs in San Antonio on Thursday. Hopefully, this overtime win didn’t take too much out of them.
Warriors having trouble with the Nuggets without Donkey…
And the Dubs lose to the Nuggets. Hopefully Cols kept on his clothes for that one!
Too bad Bray-mond wasn’t out there to enjoy that.
That is a great ending to a wonderfull Wednesday! It’s crazy when you realize they have not played the Spurs or the thunder yet? Obviously a great team but…..
I’ve already accepted as reality that we’re going to have to face the Spurs in the Finals. I think they are the better team. The Warriors are doing exactly what I hoped – exhausting themselves. They are defending a title, trying to prove they weren’t lucky, trying to break the single season record streak, trying to win the MVP…and now little injuries are happening here and there. Its wearing on them mentally. The Spurs, however, have perfected the long play. They just move quietly alone, destroying teams and when they need a day off, they take it and don’t care… Read more »
As long as Tony Parker doesn’t break down at the end of the season… I think that was the main reason they lost last year. Without his penetration they’re a much different team.
I thought that the combination Kyrie and Dellavadova on the floor together down the stretch worked really well. A team has to play one type of defense when Kyrie has the ball, and a completely different defense when Delly gets it. I thought Kyrie’s defense lapsed a little down the stretch because he is still not entirely in game condition. He fully expends his energy on offense, but doesn’t have enough left to go all out on defense . . . yet. Again, I’ve largely noticed this down the stretch. So if you’re saying he’s a poor defender because of… Read more »
will you guys please periscope while you watch sometime? i really want to see you watching a game!
what if we watch the game naked?
That doesn’t sound very rhetorical, Cols…
That explains a lot!
Hubie Brown really is a Boston homer. He shouldn’t be allowed to call any Celtics games.
NOTICED ( SO FAR ) THE MAVS ARE NOT PLAYING ( RESTING ) ALL THEIR STARTERS —-LAST NIGHT’S GAME TOOK ITS TOLL—-WILL THE CAVS HAVE A SIMILAR ” HANGOVER ” TOMORROW VS THE SPURS —DO WE REST OUR STARTERS AGAINST HOUSTON AFTER ” BEATING ” THE SPURS
Dallas rested guys who are older and have had some significant injuries. If the Cavs are going to rest players, I think they will do it against weaker competition, and not all at once.
They basically punted in a game they were not likely to win. I wouldn’t mind the Cavs doing the same. The SA game will prolly be the biggest point spread against them all year (maybe 2nd behind GS), and Houston is a very winnable game with rest. Analytically it would be better to save themselves for the Rockets, but players and fans would rather see big showdowns, and how they match up vs the Spurs; It’s a big game and on TNT, so I don’t think they will rest anyone, but I would understand if they did.
League finds 6 officiating mistakes late in #Cavs win over Mavs, including one prior to Shumpert’s steal on Dirk: ohio.com/blogs/clevelan…
NCAA players can now put themselves into the draft virtually every year, attend the combine and team workouts and not jeopardize eligibility – Steve Kyler
That is fantastic, actually. Nothing like not being drafted to make you realize you’re not as good as you thought you were. It might help guys refocus in college where they can learn to either be an NBA player or take advantage of the education.
If they are drafted do they have to leave?
I would imagine so?!?!?
Does anyone find Kristen Ledlow (NBA TV) kind of annoying, or is it just me?
Great road win #AllForOne instagram.com/p/BAfrqjFzh0e/
Matthew Dellavadova #NBAVote
It took OT but the @cavs outlasted the Mavs in intense fashion. Re-watch it NOW on @NBATV! #MarqueeMatchup
I agree with the accolades for Shump’s hands. Here’s a fun quote that relates to that point:
“The (Dirk) steal was just more proof that Shumpert has arguably the best hands in the league. Not many guards could make that steal, and even less could deliver their own child.”
Are we buyers now that we’ve cleared the smokin’ joe spot? What do you guys think?
Definitely… there’s many avenues to go. Should try and get a scorer for the bench is my guess, especially if Mo’s hand is worse than publicly disclosed.
IMO, they don’t make a trade unless there’s a clear upgrade to a position or someone gets hurt between now and Feb. Also, have room to pick up a buyout guy now. Joe Johnson?
I don’t think they do it for anything but a stretch 4 and Joe Johnson kinda fits the bill except he really can’t shoot this year
I see the Markieff Morris rumors are pretty legit. A very good stretch four who is a headcase and wants out and fits into the exception. I just don’t know if we have anything to give PHX that would make it worth it for them. They’re not making the playoffs, so they have little incentive to dump a malcontent for nothing. He’s under contract for 4 years at 8 mil, a great contract for his potential production. He has value, and they may just let him pout all year and try to unload him in the offseason as they rebuild.
In other news, Browns hire Hue Jackson… which is the first good move the Browns have made in a long time!!!
Super-pissed about this as a Bengals fan. Many down here wanted Jackson as HC for the Bengals. He completely transformed Andy Dalton. Not a great offensive play-caller, but supremely good motivator.
And rumors attach a goodbye Johnny to his hiring.
Long, long overdue. Headcase who isn’t a traditional pocket passer and really short. Not a good recipe for success for the browns.
Yeah, I saw that as well… apparently at Hue’s behest which is interesting. I guess Hue didn’t like what he saw from him whenever the Bengals played the Browns.
There has been a little speculation that Hue would try and pull McCarron from the Bengals, which would infuriate me because I like McCarron better than Dalton!
Considering the Bengals outscored the Browns 63-3 in the two games Johnny started against them… not a huge surprise…
Also, unless McCarron is a FA… Bengals are not sending him to a division rival for anything less than a number one pick…
re: post #1… yup, pretty much!
re: post #2.. right again, I would also add… it is something Hue has done before: see Carson Palmer to the Raiders.
correction: I know Oakland is not a division rival… so you’re right on that. But, I can see Hue doing it… McCarron is easily worth a 1st rounder to me… he has that x-factor everyone loves!
But that was out of division to a team they don’t have to face twice every year… and the Bengals got the Raiders’ #1 pick in 2012 and #2 pick in 2013 (that could have upgraded to a #1 if the Raiders had made the AFC Championship Game).
Yes true… hence the correction. My apologies!
Honestly, If I were the Bengals, I would require two 1st rounders and another pick (something like RGIII trade package). McCarron was a born leader… something Dalton has had to learn from Hue, McCarron just has “it”.
Can’t believe McCarron fell to the 5th round because he was “too cocky”. Winning 3 National Championships and marrying Miss Alabama… I think he has earned the right to be a little cocky!
McCarron was a winner just like Colt McCoy and Johnny Manziel.
Uh, McCoy and Manziel won 3 national championships?
Not to mention McCarron is 6’4” 220 pounds… in other words, a real NFL pocket QB.
McCarron has more tools than those two, true. My point was just that the “it” factor can be very misleading. Those were two guys who had the ‘It” factor and were “winners” in college but didn’t have what it takes to succeed. Not saying that McCarron is the same way. But “cocky” is a very short drive to “arrogant”, and what you end up with is Billy Manziel, Kellen Winslow, or Ryan Leaf.
I see what you mean now… I think McCarron’s “it” factor is apparent when you hear him speak. He answers questions from the media the way Carson Palmer used to, which to me, Palmer was the bar all QBs should strive… he was the ultimate team leader who never threw his teammates under bus… and he had Chad Johnson screwing everything up for him! Dalton just doesn’t take responsibility the way McCarron does. Dalton’s gotten better, but he just doesn’t get it the way McCarron does. Just look at McCarron’s press conference after the Wild Card game… the media tried… Read more »
Also, I get that Cleveland fans have a nearly insurmountable amount of “scar tissue” which is well-earned… but I can’t sing Hue’s praises enough… that was a steal.
I think trading multiple high picks for a back-up QB is nuts… especially given what the Browns have done in the past. If Hue likes him that much, he should wait a year or two until he’s a FA, and then make a big push for him… and in the meantime, bolster the rest of the team with the current high draft picks. I’m not a big believer in Paxton Lynch, Goff, or any of the QB’s coming out this year. I’d love it if Bosa was available with the #2 pick for the Browns. They need a guy like… Read more »
Pretty much agree, EG. re: 1st paragraph… generally agree, I was speaking more from the Bengals’ POV. Meaning, Brown and Lewis are nuts if they let the Browns have McCarron for 1 pick, given that McCarron has already had more success than Dalton in the playoffs… Dalton’s never put the Bengals in a position to win a playoff game. If I were the Bengals, I’d trade Dalton for a ton of picks and load up on weapons for McCarron. McCarron’s definitely gone if he hits FA. re: 2nd paragraph… Totally agree. Not a fan of the QB class. re: 3rd… Read more »
I can see where you’d want multiple picks from the Bengals’ perspective… I just don’t see it happening. It’s not like AJ lit the world on fire. He went 2-2 to end the regular season… beating two of the worst teams in the NFL (Baltimore and SF) and losing to two playoff teams (Pittsburgh and Denver). He also didn’t do much in the playoff game… it was the Cinci D that gave them the shot to win (early at least). Again, the Raiders gave up two picks for Carson Palmer who was a starter in his prime (despite the injuries).… Read more »
HAHA… never under-estimate the incompetence of NFL GMs… I agree not probable, but also not impossible, as a matter fact, your subsequent point re: backups shows they might be able to receive a handsome offer. I would argue that Lewis’ conservative mentality is a significant factor in those two losses… McCarron was throwing dimes all over the field against the best defense in the NFL (Denver) then inexplicably went to a hyper-conservative game plan. Against PIT, Cincinnati tried foolishly to run on the PIT’s defense, the strength of their defense, and only in the 4th when they were desperate enough,… Read more »
I wouldn’t give up a 5th round pick for McCarron. Maybe not a 6th or 7th. He’s not very good.
I’d say Manziel was gone regardless of who was hired, but I do like the front office moves so far as well as the HJax hire. Then again I liked the Farmer promotion to GM…..
LOL… that’s pretty funny taximike!
Sounds like a good hire. It won’t matter though if they cannot acquire actual talent. Browns may have won another press conference, but that’s all at this point.
HAHA… true. Very interested to see what they do personnel-wise
Some bones to pick with Blatt: I saw two or three straight awful inbounds plays. The one at the end of regulation was one of them. If LeBron insisted on being the inbounder, that’s a problem. He’s going to draw so much traffic that it’s much easier for Kyrie to get a shot with LeBron on the floor than as the passer. Bron also missed the open pass to JR in the right corner and instead stared Kyrie down and tried to force a bad pass to him. Speaking of JR, we all noted that Delly should have been in… Read more »
That Shump play on Dirk at end of regulation was a life saver. I know Dirk was going to hit that shot…no doubt in my mind.
I thought the Le-inbounder was a weird call, too, but the Cavs have had some success doing that in the past. With that little time left, though, you’d think Lebron would have the best chance of getting a shot up.
Nate – I’ve been thinking the same thing about Love. It’s very pronounced watching LeBron and Kyrie finish so effortlessly with their lefts.
TT has been overrated his entire career. Still think he’s a good fit on the Cavs. He’s a much better finisher than he was the first couple years.
Mo was attending to a family matter, fwiw. I see our defensive struggles coming in large part from KI replacing Delly with the starters. When he loses the PG on the pick, someone has to help, which usually leads to an open man that the PG can hit. Deron Williams was running free and was open for Midrange J’s if no help came, and if if did he was passing out. KI has been committed to improving defensively and I think the more he gets his legs back and works on the floor with the guys, the better he’ll get.… Read more »
I think it makes sense for Shumpert to start for 2 reasons. Better defense with the starters, and more offense with the bench unit. Win win situation as far as I’m concerned.
I actually like it better with J.R. with the starters – he becomes so much more valuable offensively with starters because he is often wide freaking open. When he is the primary or secondary option on bench units, his offense isn’t nearly as good (see: playoffs) and his overall value diminishes.
Shump is more versatile, and is more useful as a sub because he can sub out multiple positions and fits in to almost any lineup. But if KI can’t keep up defensively, you kind of have to start Shump
I have said that last sentence of yours for about a year now, so hear, hear!
I have said that last sentence of yours for about a year now, so hear, hear! Sorry, I mean next to last sentence…
Interesting write up – now im going to be watching for a klove left handed finish and wont find one. That bugs me about him too – max players finish; even if the shot is tough. Strangely hes still the cav i root hardest for ; feels like he needs our help the most.
Tt is overrated defensively. Saw a stat somewhere that guards are shooting 86% against him (unsure if true)
I guessed 80% just watching him every game this year. It is kinda my obsession…
I like our small lineup with Love at the 5.
Delly is indispensable. I was laughing because we had to pull him early in the 4th so he’d be ready for crunch time!
I said on Twitter that Delly was the 4th most important Cav and was promptly ridiculed. My entire NBA cred was voided by some.
(depending on the matchup) I still believe it.
It’s close with TT. If Moz plays like that then Delly is 4th because TT becomes more replaceable. If Moz is struggling I put TT ahead
Being ridiculed on twitter is the equivalent of being given the bird by someone at whom you honked for failing to use his blinker. They are irrelevant fools unworthy of your mental energy. I peg Delly at 5 or 6 – behind Shump and maybe TT – but he jumps up very quickly if KI can’t go. But Delly is a huge part of this team and the fact that he has gotten even better since last year is a real gift to the team. I’m still surprised we didn’t lock him up for 5 mill a year, thought that… Read more »
I wonder what Delly’s agent was asking for last year? And what they’ll be asking for this year. In both cases he was/will be a restricted free agent. I think it hurt more last year, with a lot of teams being capped already, but just about everyone has spending money this upcoming year. Should be interesting.
About a month and a half ago I wrote here that I thought it was possible he could get like a 4 year 32-36 million dollar deal (which Col’s laughed heartily at). I’m almost positive of it now.
My thought is it would go for a little less because he still faces another Qualifying Offer this year for peanuts. He’s played now three years all out all the time and had a few injuries or two. He may not want to risk another year on the QO if he can get security and a longer contract. 4 for 24-28 would get it done, I’d think.
There needs to be more discussion of the amazing hat commercial, forget the game. I can’t decide which part I like the most, but gun to my head, I’d have to say the Mozgov ‘roar’. Whoever came up with the music deserves an Oscar, too.
Hard to match “good bear… good bear” for me…
The narration is perfect, too…everything is so perfect…it’s mind boggling.
I just watched the commercial with no volume b/c I have a sleeping baby on my lap. And it’s absolutely fantastic! I can’t imagine how awesome it would be with actual sound.
I envy your first experience with sound, whenever it is.
Cavs 42-4 with the big 3 since the trade. Knowing that I always thought they would win last night.
Delly’s no look feed to Bron late in the 4th was a thing of beauty and should have gotten some love.
His passing abilities are so sharp and absolutely spot on better than other starting NBA PG’s in the league.

Run those same numbers for the Spurs and the Warriors and you’ll see why realistic criticism and analysis is useful. I can promise you that LBJ doesn’t look at those numbers and think, “Nothing to worry about. The trophy is ours.”
Those numbers are better than the Warriors who even if you throw out the Dallas loss have at least 4 losses in their last 46 with Steph Green and Klay playing. 1 vs Bucks, 2 vs Cavs, 1 vs Houston. And our scoring Margin is better than theirs. Factor in that we have way more room to grow as a team and I’m not scared of them at all.
Also thank you taxi where did you find them? You didn’t look at all the biz scores your self did you?
Yea I’m a numbers geek, but it was no big deal. I already had last years games, all I had to do was tabulate this years 10 games.
The Cavs could be .500 right now, and Cols would be saying exactly the same thing. And as Joey noted, check out the numbers for the Warriors and the Spurs. Nobody is ‘panicking’, some people are a bit more nuanced in discussion than just saying “the Cavs will destroy team x!” Over and over.
Ok but they are not .500 and the numbers are better than anyone else. I mean, facts are facts here, folks…
Thanks Taxi. Where did you get those numbers?
YW. I replied up above to you, but I had the games and scores from last year already saved. All I had to do was add em up and divide for the average. And I knew which games KI played this year, so same deal. I live on Basketball Reference and NBA.com’s stats pages, lol.
Uh Arch I think the article has a different tone
You guys remember the Brew Garden owner we interviewed? https://cavstheblog.com//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////?p=32387
http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2016/01/middleburg_heights_restaurant.html
I think there’s a correlation between the number of commercials Moz appears in and his effectiveness on the court. The more local TV the better. I give it a few weeks before he appears in a Mr. Hero commercial.
Tom,
I think you posted the wrong article from cleveland.com. I hope Moz is not in that one.
I think he was trying to say it was the owner of Brew Garden.
Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bad things usually happen to people who own Hummers…
I think that’s the most comments we’ve had on a Live Thread aside from the Finals games last year…
Yeah over 700…. Apparently a lot of panicked bloggers last night :)
Gotta stop panicking. This team doesn’t lose all that much.
Yeah, I’ll have to wear my Thunder Coat during the next showing.
I wouldn’t say that… just people being excited and engaged…
I should’ve said #sarcasm, apparently.
Remember… you gotta use the /s
Is that the sarcasm signal… I feel like telling someone I’m being sarcastic takes away from its actual point.
I agree. If someone doesn’t get the sarcasm, all the better.
For good reason. Game set a record for FSOHIO: 14.9 share, I think.
Kind of surprising to me. A tuesday night game before we play SA in 2 days and GS next week? All those viewers and comments? Turned out to be worth our time though I’d say.
Can someone explain why the Lakers are getting so many nationally televised games? They play the Warriors in the second TNT match up this Thursday…. The NBA should pull those games and put in some more competitive action. But wait, let’s watch a gimpy Kobe get slaughtered instead…
Because there’s a tremendous NBA viewing audience in Los Angeles… also, the Warriors are still the best team (record wise) in the league and the reigning champs… and yes, there is the Kobe farewell tour…
The Warriors should… It just seems like every time there’s a national game on it’s the damn Lakers.
Probably for the same reason that ESPN insists on broadcasting nationally every Yankees or Red Sox game, even though no one outside those regions GAS about either team.
You guys have hit on some of it. I think it’s a combination of a marquee franchise, with a top 5ish all time player, and then you factor in the Warriors (for this game at least), and geography. There just aren’t that many choices for a 10:30 start time which is the start time for the 2nd game of ESPN and TNT doubleheaders. Golden State who have their allowed allotment of national games maxed out. LA Clippers are the obvious choice, but they have a lot of national games too, and personally I can’t stand watching them whine. Sac who… Read more »
Good recap, DW! It was great to see the bench step up and give the big three a terrific assist last night. LBJ was pretty spectacular throughout (his dunks lately have looked like those of his 25 year old self), and even though Ky and KLove shot poorly, they both redoubled their focus on other things they do well like passing (9 assists for KI) and rebounding (11 boards for Kev). And Moz, Delly, Shump and RJ were all difference-makers off the bench. Really enjoying this team, and wins like last night are signature… Bring on the Spurs!
Yes it was a great win. I don’t think Dallas is anything special, and in fact I’m amazed at their record, but being buried on the road early and coming back to win like that was pretty awesome. It’s one of those games where you get so amped up, it takes me a couple hours to come back down from. And you’re exactly right about Lebron, he looks great. At the start of last year he looked terrible. And not for just one or a couple games, he looked bad for months. Couldn’t dribble, couldn’t jump and looked like he… Read more »
FWIW… Dallas is the #5 seed in the West (#4 before this latest surge by the Clips), are a very good defensive team, very well coached, littered with guys who seem to have career games against the Cavs, and are still one of only two teams that have beaten the Warriors this year (even if it was minus Steph). It was exactly the kind of game I expected to see, especially given the struggles the Cavs have had on the road this year, even against bad teams. It was also kind of a win the Mavs needed, since they now… Read more »
You may be right (and you were last night), while they play excellent team ball, and have a great coach, I don’t think that can carry you very far. I still think they will fall in the standings, and I can see them missing the playoffs. If they do get in, I believe they will be a very easy out. They remind me of Boston last year, and I don’t mean that in a negative way, because both teams play their asses off and are well coached. Just not enough talent I think.
Agree that they won’t get very far, but I do think they’ll still make the playoffs… who takes their spot? Sacramento? Portland? Denver? At worst, I think they’re the 8 seed and most likely an easy out for the Warriors in the first round. At best (for the media hype anyway) they wind up in the 5 seed for a clash with the Clips for the soul of DeAndre Jordan… Dallas is just one of those teams that I never truly rule out, especially given their history. Dirk may be older, but he’s still an amazing player. Parsons has been… Read more »
Those winter hats are going to sell for a ton on Ebay. I WANT ONE.
Me too. Who is going to that game? Get as many as you can.
They should just put them up on the Cavs shop.
And if they don’t… we might just have to replace the C:tB shirts with C:tB ushanka hats this year…
Sign me up. No, seriously, I need it.
Hopefully they sell them at other games too.
Nice write up. Maybe a typo in the introduction. LeBron scored five pts in overtime, as did Kyrie and Love
I fixed it. Thank you. I added his fourth quarter points to the his overtime ones.
Also did anyone notice Mozzy yelling “How did you like that you little b***** mother f*******!?” after Delly’s double three point makes? Pretty hilarious. Video source: https://streamable.com/qwn1
Awesome find. He definitely has a fire to him when he’s feeling it.
How the heck can you tell that’s what he’s saying??
It was probably something in Russian but Nick’s translation looked like it could have fit!
LMAO I’m still laughing. THAT he can say in English? … They are new mates since Harris has left.
Good write-up. Though I don’t think 10 points counts as an ‘only’ for Shumpert. It is more than he averages. 7 guys in double figures. I’d also shout out to Love for hitting a big 3 right after Dirk’s 3 in OT put the Mavs up 3. Like Kyrie, he struggled early but hit some big shots in the 4th and OT and found other ways to help the team win (Kyrie had 9 dimes, Love 11 boards and 2 blocks. But you hit it on the head, Timo was the main story of the night. Really good bounce back… Read more »
The main story was LeBron. Dude was a beast.
It’s amazing how people come to expect more than what he did last night. The guy is a top 5 player all time.
Aside from that massive dunk facial he served up… one of my favorite LBJ moments was when he passed it to Kyrie for that dagger 30-footer… Bron could have easily taken and made that closer shot, but him showing faith like that in KI speaks volumes about his leadership and trust in his teammates…
It worked out, but it is not a wise decision to take a 27 foot shot vs a wide open 12 foot shot when up by 1 with 15 seconds left. I’d rather have a 50 ish percent chance at 2 than a 25 ish percent chance at 3. In fairness though, I think he was shocked at turning around after the DWill flop and finding no one around him. He wasn’t prepared for it (nor should he have been, really) and by the time he gathered himself, Matthews was on his way over. Credit to him for saving the… Read more »
Kyrie was wide open, and you’re right, LBJ seemed a little surprised… Still, it’s more that I like that he deferred and let Kyrie deliver the dagger. Just means there will be multiple viable options available for the Cavs with the game on the line in the future…
I see your point and can agree. I can’t stand that NBA Alpha mode where every star player HAS to take the last shot or it’s an affront to his rep. I watched the last Pacers/Heat game where Indy needed a 3 to tie, and they wasted 2 timeouts because they couldn’t get it to Paul George, who was of course occupying all the Heat’s attention. 3rd try they finally got it to him, and while he got a somewhat decent look (and missed), they could’ve/should’ve gotten a better look, from a better 3 point shooter.
Jordan wouldn’t have pass that up.
But Magic would have…
Such a fun game. First half was pretty forgettable however 2nd half and overtime looked like both teams were going hard. Maybe not playoff basketball hard but certainly better than your average mid-January game hard. Only gripe here is for KLove. Hate to criticize cause he played hard and played well on the glass, however he’s got to find his touch around the basket again. For a guy as talented as he is its tough to watch him continuously miss high-quality opps inside the restricted area. I’m sure his stats would be far better off if he converted. Seems like… Read more »
But unlike last year at times… KLove never stopped doing other things even though his shot was not falling… If nothing else, his outlook has galvanized on this team…
In fairness to his bad shooting stats. Campy or AC noted that a few misses were off tough offensive rebound tip backs that didn’t go.
If the Mozerati could play against JaVale McGee every night he’d be an all-star. That being said, there was a clear difference in the tone of the defense when he and Delly first entered the game. On the first defensive play I believe, the Mavs guard tried to drive like they’d been doing all game up until that point and then suddenly realized Mozzy was clogging the lane, panicked, and missed the shot. From that point on they stopped attacking and started settling more allowing us to come back. I really like him playing on the second unit where he… Read more »
Thought he also did a pretty good job on Patchouli Oil for a while as well…
Yes He disrupted ZaZA much more than poor TT jumping at him with arms flailing
Can someone get me one of the Mozgov hats please?!?!?!?!?!
Only if you post a pic of yourself in it… and riding a bear…
Good Bear Good Bear
Can Evil Genius put up Lebron’s Karl Malone imitation dunk? That did cause a stir. lol
and SILENCE …… Oh No He Didn’t!!!! YES HE DID!!
Enjoyed reading this recap! Spot on everything you said! Especially the deserved props on Mosgov. I had a good feeling he was going to have a good game against these guys. He understands these types of BIGs as opposed to the Okafor types. This was a perfect example of the reality & advantage of a 7 footer. I did like how Delly got him the quick lob in the beginning of the game to get him going. Even better was Blatt recognizing quickly he HAD to run the Big Man last night. It is mind boggling the Cavs got themselves… Read more »
That dunk by LeBron was ferocious. Just nuts, I can’t believe he didn’t get a free throw there too. What a game by LeBron and, at the end, Kyrie. Love this team.
Should have definitely been an and-1 situation…
Eh, wasn’t much contact at all. You would think that with all Lebron’s histrionics that he was John Roseboro and Harris was Juan Marichal, but I don’t think you get that call there, and surely not on the road.
There was more contact on that than there was on say the Moz foul on ZaZa, or the Delly foul on DWill…
I’d go with same, but yes those shouldn’t have been fouls either. Delly had a couple questionable calls go against him I thought.
Good writeup.
Isn’t Harris going straight up and down under the basket? I can see the refs letting that go as much as I want LBJ to get calls.
Lots of Panic at the Blog! as Cols would say but great that they pulled this one out. I could see a downer game in one of the back-to-backs but with the way the Cavs are playing you can’t count them out even down 10 late.
Haha. Were people panicking? I bet they were. No faith around here during game threads.
There is a difference between being disappointed in how they are performing in the moment and panicking. I think most of the live thread from last night all understood that we very well were going to close the gap at some point. That doesn’t mean we have to be satisfied with falling behind 23-7 in the first few minutes of the game. All of this uphill play wears out the team. Especially on a long, difficult road trip like they are on now.
Were you panicking during the Blazers game when they were down by 30? Just curious.
LOL… I think you and Cols both need a refresher on the definition of the word “panic”
Agreed………
You guys must have balls of steel!
Pretty clear on it. At one point in the 3rd, Cavs struggling mightily, there were statements like they had no shot against the spurs because of the play in THIS game. They have no system at all. Etc. I’m not going to roll through all 700 posts but you get the picture. I do get bemoaning a missed play or being confused about a call. That’s not what I’m talking about.
Exactly. This is exactly the panicking I’m talking about. It’s like people forget that this very Cavs team went to the Finals and almost won it all.
And really… how would you know, Cols? You weren’t even on the Thread last night…
Winning two games in a best of 7 is ‘almost winning it all’? What is the opposite of panic?
Yeah… I was there, and read most of the 700+ posts… I think it was one guy in particular who made that comment… not a rash of people.
“Panic” is something you do when you’re in a burning building, or an earthquake, or someone is in a hostage situation… If anything, I’d say there was some occasional disappointment and concern… but not “panic” as you and Cols like to say…
You were not who I was thinking of. Panic is being used in context obviously. In this instance, people who want to take a dump on the Cavs organization or players and their future because at the time they are losing a game.
Here was the comment in question in it’s entirety (I won’t out who said it, you can look it up if you want): “Cavs have no system. Absolutely nothing. They come out of the half, and they run a few sets. Out of a time out, they run a set. Then it just decomposes into nothing-ness. Players are just dribbling and walking around however they want. No sets, no passing, just jacking threes.” That same commenter said the Cavs will lose by 50 to the Spurs. After scrolling back through… that was the most negative, outside of an individual play.… Read more »
The win streak has definitely helped. Heck, the cavs winning all but 9 games has helped but it still happens. Not to blow up Nate or anything (as I do it) but check the “need a trade now” comments in the Blazers Live thread! With the Moz revival (ESPN said last night was make or break) things are looking okay.
Can’t speak for anyone else, but I made one comment in the first half that if the Cavs play like this on Thursday, the Spurs are going to take their lunch money. I stand by that, too. If that is ‘panicking’ (LOL), then so be it.
Yeah no one is panicking. People get emotional watching sports. If you don’t, then what is the point? Cols likes to play out this narrative, along with Delly is out of shape…
Top 20 Colsian Narratives: 1. Cavs have no threats 2. Delly is out of shape 3. Delly sucks 4. Delly is better this year, but still sucks a lot 5. Mo Williams is better than Delly 6. Pace and space was invented by Eric Spolstra and the Heat 7. Leb is a God and should be treated as such and never besmirched 8. Andy sucks 9. Euro big men suck 10. Big men are head cases 11. Nate hates Leb 12. Everybody “panics” too much 13. Stars are the be-all end-all 14. Box scores are the Bible 15. Defense sucks… Read more »
That’s pretty spot on!!!!!!!!!
1. Cavs have no threats – this is true 2. Delly is out of shape -this is no longer true, was true last playoffs 3. Delly sucks – no longer true, was true until this year once he got in shape 4. Delly is better this year, but still sucks a lot -not true, Delly is actually useful 5. Mo Williams is better than Delly – true on the offensive end, but Delly is a better defender than him 6. Pace and space was invented by Eric Spolstra and the Heat – absolutely true 7. Leb is a God and… Read more »
17 – he didn’t know how to USE the cap space. He just gathered 2nd rounders. Don’t go back on your own Colsian narrative!
The Spurs are a good regular season team, but not in the playoffs? Despite winning 5 championships under Pop?!?!?!?
— ‘Rocky Mountain High’…..
Mo is better than Delly offensively, despite Delly shooting higher percentages?
‘But the Colorado rocky mountain high
I’ve seen it rainin’ fire in the sky
The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullabye
Rocky mountain high (Colorado)’
It’s pretty uncontroversial to say that Mo is better offensively.
Except he basically isn’t…. The only thing he is better at doing is creating his own shot (not really needed much for this team), and the midrange jumper (which is basically the least impactful shot).
You’re too high on Delly, dude. More power to you, but you gotta admit it.
If it means that I think he’s better and more valuable than Mo, then I guess I’m (and many others) are ‘too high’ on Delly.
We really need a real time commenting system. This is gold
Spot on EG, but I’m afraid you missed two biggies –
21. The Warriors suck, and the Cavs will destroy and then sweep them
22. No one can beat the Cavs in a 7 game series.
I do know it’s difficult to cull it down to just 20, though.
I stand corrected… and I was going to stop at 10, but there were just too many… ;)
This is a fun thread haha I’ve enjoyed it.
