Live Thread: Cavs at Pistons
2016-01-29A chance for the Wine and Gold to get back at the Pistons for a loss waaaay back in November (seems like eons ago).
Tonight could be a reminder of why Timofey Mozgov makes sense for a playoff run. Who else is going to slow down Andre Drummond?
Will Ty Lue go to “Bang a Dummond”?
Let’s talk about it!
First time poster here:
I’d like to say that I’ve been following this blog for years, back when Krolick was the sole writer here. I read through the transition from Krolick to our new contributors and have been very impressed. You guys, and the regular commentators, are a true f’in gem. There’s no where else to get the best insight on the Cavs. Thank you guys very much. Especially you Cols!
Thanks for everything you guys do, I look forward to the recap and comments every day.
GO GAVS!
Just saw a pic of the Richfield Coliseum, wow that brought back memories. Last time I was there was to see Kiss 1980 I belive, lol
picture on the Cavs team page on NBA.com
I have a pic of myself with lifesize cardboard cutouts of Harper and Brad.
At the Richfield Coliseum. That game was against the Rockets, who pulled off a late comeback. I recall how sweet Akeem’s turn around jumper was, for guy who had not touched a basketball until he was about 20.
Last time I was there was Larry Bird’s second to last game ever… Game 5 playoff win for the Cavs in 1992…
Yeah I moved in 85 but would of loved to see that game and others. Good memories seeing the building tho how it was just there in the middle of nowhere right off of 77
Yeah… loved that building… It was especially cool since I lived just outside of Akron, and it was much closer to get to than downtown Cleveland…
I got married the day before. Several hundred people and four bands. We were only married for about six years, but people are still talking about the party.
My last time there was to see Guns n Roses when I was in high school. Yeah baby! Saw my first Cavs game there too–a win against what I remember as a middling Mavs team with Mark Aguirre and Roy Tarpley.
Reporter asking Lebron about him yelling at TT. He said “it was something I had to tell him regarding Reggie because I didn’t want it to happen again. And Reggie tried to do the same in 2nd half and this time TT was ready for him. “
Ok, LeBron, now about your late weakside rotations…
If I were TT I might be a bit ticked at LBJ too, it was the last play before the half…you’re going to yell at me publicly here on the court? You can’t wait until we’re in the locker room?
Bron answering the “what happened on that missed breakaway dunk” question…
At least he was able to laugh at himself about it…
I actually thought it was refreshing to see TT talk back to Lebron. He yapped right back at him. Even said something out of the side of his mouth.
I think that’s awesome. That challenge, that mentality, that could ignite a run to the finals.
K-Love should take notes. Grow a pair.
This may seem critical after a win like that. But just calling it like I see it. Lots of horrible mid range fallaways on offense and a fair amount of iso, but that didn’t seem to matter because of hot shooting. Certainly didn’t move the ball or themselves as crisply tonight. Love hit a bunch of threes, some contested. Kyrie had it going and took a bunch of 20 footers which i guess is fine as long as he hits them. Love got some good looks and converted. They got him the ball and he rewarded us with excellent play.… Read more »
I actually thought Love got the ball plenty at the elbows. A lot of times its not all that close to the actual elbow but hes been doing some good things from the FT-line extended tonight. Hes also been shooting pretty well from those spots.
Yeah, not sure he hit one tonight but i like the little pin down they run for him for a catch and shoot 18 footer. Also love how he is taking it to the bucket if he gets run of the three line. My concerns tonight definitely were not with him. James took a ton of contested jumpers in iso situations. Hit some, but not the ideal shot on a consistent basis for this team. But yeah guess he hasn’t actually been getting great position there. However, i also think that is partially on the team in that many times… Read more »
I think we were watching a different game, John… Lots of ball movement, especially early. Fewer assists because of a lot of Detroit fouls. Good teams exploit the mid-rangers. KLove had a ton of touches down low. Defense was really good, but there were a couple of bad rotations and backdoor lapses… but this was the best D I’ve seen Kyrie play so far this year.
Maybe, was kind of in and out tonight and didn’t get to see much of the beginning or 3rd qtr. . Irving did do a good job on Reggie when I was watching, again no problem with love or the amount of touches, just didn’t seem like a ton on the elbows, but I was kind of in and out. Seems like they got burned a fair amount in transition, but may have been just when I was able to tune it .Will have to go back tomorrow and watch the rest on league pass
Yeah, fourth quarter featured a lot of what you’re talking about… which is why the Pistons were able to come back and close it from 20 point lead to 10. First three quarters were good offensively IMHO… They had a few lapses on D, but for the most part brought energy and hustle… particularly Kyrie who Lue even said set the tone with his defense tonight…
Well just looked it up, cannot complain about a 121 o rating. 111 d rating for the game.
There you go…
Still can’t believe this happened…
Ok, so my cbssports app is garbage. Their minute totals are always really far off for some reason. Switching apps. Overall, great win against a good team. Going to full Cavs mode tomorrow. Getting food, and drink, and NO distractions. Cannot wait to see what this team looks like against the best of the best.
Yahoo sports app is good.
Good win. I like it. One question: everyone seems afraid of SA and GSW. I get the GSW thing. But we played SA once, on the road, played poorly and led most of the game before losing by 4.
Us against them seems like a coin toss, and we have a lot more room to improve.
I think people are a bit hesitant because that’s also what happened against the Dubs on Christmas day then they came in and embarrassed us. Different coach, different mindset now, so we’ll see.
SVG just scorched Cavs firing Blatt. Ty has played only 4 games and you all think they are playing better all the sudden? Blatt was on path to take Cavs to 60 wins! Just think about that!
Kinda hollow though given how well the Cavs played tonight…
I should have put those comments in quotes. I didn’t say the above. He was very passionate. I’ve always liked that in Van Gundy. He’s not a boring coach. He will tell you like it is and yes he can exaggerate at times.
There’s definitely nothing held back with SVG that’s for sure
SVG defending Blatt hard…
After the cheap play of Morris tonight I hope the idea of the other Morris coming to Cavs is done. Don’t need it.
Yeah… those Morrises are worse than the Hansen Brothers…
without the glasses.
Reporter just asked SVG this question… “How much better is this Cavaliers team with Kyrie Irving and Tyronn Lue, compared to the team you guys beat earlier in the year?”
SVG took about 20 seconds before answering…
Maybe all that smoke in the arena was SVG lighting up… he sounds like he smoked two packs tonight…
The possibilities are endless. Hard to believe it has only happened 9 times. Lebron taking less shots is so much more effective
Kyrie was out most of the time.
Excellent night at the line btw… 27-29 for 93%
Cavaliers’ Richard Jefferson battling through toe injury – ESPN
He was more effective against the suns but everyone is
Last time Cavs played in DET, team bumped to rap before game and sat in silence after loss. Quiet before game tonight, rap back after win. -Zavac
Fire Lue and hire Ice Cube
Cube’s press conferences would be must see tv.
Straight out of Cleveland, crazy mother f’er called Mozgov!!!
“Kyrie’s defense set the tone for us tonight.” – Ty Lue
Wow don’t think we have ever heard that in re Irving. That is a great quote
Maybe David Blatts problem was that he wasn’t in shape? /s
To be honest the only chance the Cavs have against the Warriors and Spurs is to out work them. Get in great shape so that they can put the pressure on their opponents on both sides of the floor.
Let’s hope Kyrie and KLove show up tomorrow night against the Spurs.
Yeah their confidence should at least be amped. The defensive effort was there tonight as well as the offense.
Both of them need to show up against the top teams. And we will have to keep an eye on how the team will respond if the Spurs somehow find a way to hit first and build an early lead.
That’s one of the things that coach Lue is trying to fix with them. He said the team needs to learn how fight together on those situations. We’ll see tomorrow.
Knowing that they haent showed up yet against the top teams makes me even more hopeful, but they have to show up to fulfill. Great win tonight.
Only 20 assists…..Let’s hope the Cavs can get back to share the ball again tomorrow against the Spurs. They’ll definitely need it.
There was still a ton of sharing the ball despite the low assist total…
Deflated total because of all the piston fouling
Good observation…………..
I can’t tell if Ky is joking or not about the “extra cardio sessions after the games…”
Delly shoing him how to stay in shape. What a turnaround.
Thank God for Delly’s Nordic Trac
The two non-all stars combined for 57 points…
I think we can officially say that firing coach Eurogenius was a good move.
Nope… you gotta wait one more day…
Nope. This team looks 10 times better and more cohesive than anytime EuroGenius was coaching them.
Nope… they have to beat the Spurs…
I agree with EG. They get my seal of approval with a W tomorrow.
Nope. If they don’t get to the finals and sweep the Warriors, it was a complete failure.
So the second half of last season never happened. We have always been at war with Eastasia.
Ah well, if “Eurogenius sucks” has replaced “Delly sucks,” it might be worth it.
Or prove it in the playoffs?
Glad you thought of it.
What’s next on the Todo List?

Lol I have a similar day tomorrow planned. What resort are you hitting? ME, Mt Bachelor.
Winter Parl resort
Sweet so many to choose from in Colo. Oregon not as much but good none the less. Enjoy, I got a fresh 12 inches for tomorrow morning.
Only a championship will make that statement 100% true
Yeah, they’re playing almost as well as they did the second half of last season under…I forget, who was the coach then?
The Eurogenius was pretty good. I think Lue will be better. Maybe a lot better.
According to Jim Chones, film sessions now start with LeBron’s mistakes. You can bet that puts the room in a serious zone.
The new style has been in place for LESS THAN ONE WEEK. It is starting to look pretty good.
But, the move won’t be officially a “good move” until Arch buys in. I hope that is tomorrow about 11:00 pm.
This play excited me…
Van Gundy didn’t like is so much you can see him go to the bench
Watch SVG’s reaction.
Worried about our legs tomorrow night. 41 minutes for Kev, 38 for Bron, and 35 for Kyrie.
Box score says 37 for Kevin, 36 for Bron and 32 for Kyrie…
Thought they could have pulled guys at 3 and worked the clock a bit. Maybe kept Kyrie in. But whatever, maybe they will just treat it like another game.
I have 35 for james and 37 for Love not great but not horrible. And 32 for Irving..
Great effort. How the hell are they going to do that tomorrow? Who makes up these schedules? GS?
Well Cavs still not up to their best defense but still pretty pleased with the offensive effort. Gotta say, thought tonght was gonna be the night Love broke 30. A hair short with 29. Great to see, great to see.
Rice work, Cavs.
Non sticky variety…
Detroit is a good team. Tomorrow will be a very telling game for the Cavs “shape”
The entire Cavs roster needs to taunt Morris now.
Best offense by Cavs in Quarters 1-3 that I’ve seen this year.
Still wish Kyrie would pass more. His forays in the fourth seem to lead to the comeback.
Delly missed 2 easy ones. That sucks
Best defense
By Rie all year.
Easily… he was hustlin from the opening tip…
Impressed with Love and Kyrie tonight especially on hustle and defense. You CANNOT allow Ersan on the loose
And people think Delly is dirty. Give me a break.
Kevin Love has 29 points… I guess he was used the right way tonight…
I like the win but not what it means for tomorrow. Wish the Cavs could’ve rested guys in the fourth.
Easily could have, up about 10 all night. But a Detroit win is a good win. Spurs win is icing.
Still only 35 mins for LBJ… Love leader with 37…
Love finally had a scoring game that put him above his average at Minnesota.
That seemed like a phantom foul call.
I guess Lue wants to make a statement, all 3 in very late with the game near out of hand
In his defense it wasn’t like that till late.
That should be a T… Ilyasova threw LBJ to the floor…
