Podcast Episode 86: Dap and Taxes

Man, it was a rough week to be a Cavs fan. After a resurgent streak of four games highlighted by a victory over the Spurs, the Cavs once again failed to be “galvanized by success,” struggling against Indiana and losing to Charlotte and Boston. Slightly bolstered by a Friday pick-me-up against the Pelicans Ben, Tom, and I had lots to talk about on a Super Bowl Sunday night podcast. We discussed the Cavs’ week, Kyrie’s shooting and defensive struggles, basketball genius Matthew Dellavedova, and the “LeBron Tax” (more on that from Cory Hughey coming soon). We dove further down the well of purging and catharsis when we contemplated trading members of the ‘Land Lords, unleashed our Ire on anti-J.R. officials, held a referendum on Ty Lue, and measured the temperature of David Griffin’s seat. Tom also explained the difference between dap and dab, made us give a hopeful prediction, and shared unknown facts about Cincinnati. It’s all here.
Enjoy above, at SoundCloud, or on iTunes.
Why so much credibility given to Windy? He doesn’t have a pipeline to JR or the Cavs FO. JR has a no trade clause. He should know that!
Bryon Scott was fined many times as a Cavs coach criticizing refs. So much ,if you remember, he said that he had to give money to his wife for her to go on a spending spree. That was his punishment. Then she dumped him that summer after he was fired.
Festus Ezeli will undergo left knee surgery. So that might impact the Warriors chances a bit.
Maybe they will trade for Mozzy or AV.
http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=nusyxqt
Feasible but I doubt Griffin pulls the trigger. Maybe this: http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=j7vr8cd
I love how that trade decreases both teams win totals.
It will hurt them, no doubt. That’s the first really bad break they’ve had in their run. If Bogut gets some injury, they’d be in desperation trade mode.
WOW… I think that’s a HUGE loss. He’s way more athletic and competent on the offensive end than Bogut and probably just as a good a defender because of that athleticism.
According to PER, Ezeli is ranked 20th, and Bogut 40th…. huge loss.
Actually, that is maybe the only trade I would do since I see OKC’s only real problem as being their bench. That trade puts two of the top 4 players in the nba on the cavs along with one of the best rim protecting stretch 4s in the league on one of the deepest teams in the league. OKC does have their owwn iso problems but Westbrook does setup his team mates. Additonally, I think our complementary pieces are way better overall and much better defensively. Of course OKC never makes that trade. Additionally no guarantee Durant stays and it… Read more »
Whoops supposed to be a reply to above
I mean I was joking because it would never happen but I would absolutely do it if it OKC were down. Those 3 with Shump, Delly, JR, TT, Moz and Andy would be way better than they are now. And right now they are almost as good as the Cavs.
Yeah I figured, but it is interesting to think abbout how similar the cavs and okc are in terms of their core. Okc has better big at the moment, but a far worse supporting cast. We have potentially, if they are utulized more and develop, one of the best benches in.the league and not quite as good of a big three. However, ironically, I think if Ky develops to his potential and if K love is utilized correctly our big 3 could be more versatile offensively, especially since James is still a far better passer than KD. Those teams are… Read more »
Ok what about Lebron, Love and Irving for Durant, Westbrook and Ibaka? Our supporting cast fits so much better than theirs
Why not just switch teams completely? Then we could all root for St. Weirdo again…
Nah, they can keep Dion…he was mentioned in ‘the letter’, anyway…
As long as we keep Delly and they keep the man bun I’m down
Apparently Windhorst stated that the Cavs were actively shopping AV, which doesn’t seem that breaking. I kind of hope they can find a way to keep AV and continue to bring him back into the rotation.
That is a bummer. They should be actively trying to get a guy like AV. Oh! They already have him.
The AV situation is a major mystery of this season. Saving him for the playoffs is the only thing that makes sense.
I actually think they should move him…. but they’re not going to get anything for him. They would probably have to give something up for someone to take him. so I don’t see him moving anywhere until next year as a trade exception contract.
Kasich: “Steph Curry’s my favorite basketball player.” cc @KingJames @joevardon
Does he really live in Ohio?
I’m pretty sure he wanted the Cavs to sign Allen Iverson last year, so I wouldn’t take his bball knowledge anymore serious than his politics.
Knicks fired Fisher…think they’d be nuts to not go after Thibs, but according to Windhorst, they’re looking at Walton or Shaw. Walton I can see, maybe, but Shaw? The Phil buddy connection.
“Matthew Dellavedova will miss his fourth straight game Monday vs. Sacramento with a sore left hamstring, per the Cavs. Kevin Love went through shootaround and is considered probable for the Kings game. Love missed Saturday’s game against New Orleans after suffering a left quad contusion Friday.” -McM
I kind of think that they may sit out Delly until after the All-Star break. Maybe they should do the same with Love.
I’d be good with that. They play easy competition till then, and it would give both a nice break to recover.
Hamstring issues can linger if you don’t let them fully heal. A bad thigh contusion isn’t going to get much worse from playing through it and it likely won’t create any long term issues. Sit Delly if need be. Play Kevin.
Cols: Logging into an awesome blog just to complain about it sounds like a miserable way to consume sports content the way you do. Complaining and pouting every time they do something you don’t like. Meanwhile they will continue to roll along and gel and then kick it into that extra playoff gear. Being miserable for the entire season even though the blog you are supposed to like is really freaking good sounds like a terrible way to live. YOLO.
Yes. I agree and it’s something I’ve considered, that is, not commenting. But then I would be depriving you and people of your ilk my glorious takes. I’m willing to put up with the pain and hardship that is reading this blog in order to better my fellow Cavs fans.
Kanye’s ego, is that you???
I hate how alike we are. You’re just like me, but if I was wrong all the time.
Oh and the shipping charge for that coffee is ridiculous. I want some, but I’m not paying shipping for coffee that is not going to be mind blowingly good.
Well it had Delly’s face on. $ well spent. Maybe I’m helping Delly sign long term with the Cavs.
I skipped to the last 6 minutes or so. Tom had a good take. Kyrie is going to get better as he gets healthier and actually plays, Love has been great since EuroGenius got fired, Delly has been really freaking good this year, JR has been steady, Shump is good, Moz and even Andy has looked better as of late. If fans and bloggers of this team can’t appreciate that the team is pretty freaking good and will be getting better as the season goes on then the heck with them. I don’t need a bunch of negative ninnies whining… Read more »
I thought they were better last year, around this time. And it’s not so much about being ‘pretty freaking good’ it’s about beating the Warriors. They’ve regressed for multiple reasons.
Whatever. Sounds like a miserable way to watch a team the way you do. Complaining and pouting every time they do something you don’t like. Meanwhile they will continue to roll along and gel and then kick it into that extra playoff gear. Being miserable for the entire season even though the team you are supposed to like is really freaking good sounds like a terrible way to live. YOLO.
I’m not miserable, I just have high expectations for the team. And I think it’s okay to watch the team any way you like to. If you want to send me some Col’s blinders I’d be happy to wear them and experience the game in a different manner.
It’s not blinders. It’s appreciating the team you have while you have it. If you spend the entire time of LBJ’s return complaining you are going to regret it when we are back in the lottery playing to a half empty arena with no star power whatsoever once he leaves. It’s not often that you have the 2nd best NBA player of All-Time on the team that you supposedly love. In fact, this is probably the only time it’s going to happen in your life. I choose to enjoy it, you choose to hate it. I think my way is… Read more »
So what if someone complains. Doesn’t mean they didn’t enjoy. I could bet that guy enjoyed those era’s more than you because they appreciated every spectrum.
My complaining stats have been on the rise lately. And they will undoubtedly go down as Kyrie’s usage rates go down, and 3-point % rises.
That’s not going to go well for you Arch.
Go ahead and choose to enjoy it. No one is stopping you. But that’s not exactly what you do here, is it?
You’re right this is just sports. But Im definitely “yolo-ing” better than you. Who you to say that. I mean dude you’re stoned half the time. YOLO my a$s.
I pretty much agree. The likelihood that trading Kyrie turns out to be a good idea is very small. If the current Warriors are one of the best teams ever, that’s the way it goes. The Cavs have a few months to get their system optimized and hope to get lucky in the finals. Getting Kyrie and LeBron to play smarter is a realistic goal that has a chance to do the trick. Trading Kyrie for someone a lot better, and working up a new system on the fly, has zero chance of working. This year is likely to end… Read more »
Yep. And it’s pretty easy to see the path to the Cavs improving on what already is a really good team. Kyrie should get better. LeBron has never shot this poorly from three and we should see improvement there. Just those two things improving makes the team that much closer to unstoppable. I get that people are frustrated by the Hornets loss, it wasn’t that great. I don’t get the people who point out every negative aspect of the team and ignore that they are really freaking good and are winning games at a pretty awesome pace despite not having… Read more »
Probably only player I’d trade Kyrie for right now is Chris Paul. But the Clippers would need to go through some more epic meltdowns for that to occur.
Chris Paul Kyle Lowry Russel Westbrook are the only guys I’d consider. Kyrie can be maddening but he’s one of the most talented guards to ever lace up.
I wouldn’t trade Kyrie for Lowry straight up. also, Kyrie is still really freaking young. like 4 years younger than Steph young. Trading him is really sacrificing your long term potential.
I might critique this team, but I actually do think they have the talent to win as constructed. They just need to unlock that talent by figuring out how to play together so that the sum of their parts is greater than the individual pieces they have. However, to do that they have to change the way they play and excise of the bad habits the guys mentioned in the podcast. Can lue do this? Maybe, i hope, but it is too soon to tell. It might not happem this year but that is ok with me as long as… Read more »
Good take John B. I hope Lue can get it done. Blatt clearly couldn’t.
Blatt clearly could. They were 33-3 to end the season last year and were on their way. Then Olnyk happened and then Lebron took the worst shot ever in the history of the NBA finals to end regulation in game 1 and we were done due to the 2 injuries.
Exactly. In the last 5 on 5 before Blatt got fired, I said that the team had enough talent to win the chip. I just falsely assumed that Blatt would finally get the guys doing what he envisioned and I trust his basketball acumen. After the firing, I lost faith that LeBron will ever listen to a coach in Cleveland. So I decided to change tactics and see how Griffin could possibly salvage a nearly impossible situation.
I personally think that since the players got what they wanted they may end up seeing the light if they lose again. Hope Lue gets through to them this year but even if he doesn’t he may still be able to in the coming years if they lose this year. I would have loved to see the real Blatt as you guys mentioned in the podcast, the hard ass that was visible overseas, but unfortunately we never did see that version. It is partially the front office’s fault, partially the players fault, and partially Blatt’s for never changing his attitude… Read more »
W/R to their window, I agree with you to an extent. But, I don’t think their window is as big as you noted. I think they have maybe this year and next year to get it done. I also don’t completely trust the organization to stand pat if they don’t get it done this year. Dan is an inpatient owner and I could see him making some big changes, maybe unnecessary changes, if they don’t win it this year.
Well, I think of their window like this. Will Ky ever be Steph Curry? Likely not because Curry is the greatest shooter of all time, and it is not even close. Does he need to be that great, no. Could he be one of the top 5 players in the nba? I think so, if he reaches his full potential by completely buying into a system where he uses his abilities to get anywhere on the court to set up his teammates for easy buckets and learns to play efficiently off ball. Addtionally, James is going to decline, but as… Read more »
Also sorry for all the typos. Am typing everything on my phone and not very good at using touch screen keypads.
Pretty good for a phone. I’d agree with the longer window of time but not on Lebron taking a backseat. KG and Duncan didn’t really have a choice. Lebron’s a primary ball handler, and like Kobe, it’s hard to transition. The Cavs will have to accept the good and bad of the situation.
The problem is the Cavs don’t have a history of drafting well or of developing young talent.
Not denying that. However, this core is still fairly young with the exception of James, JR, and Mozgov. We will need to replace guys like RJ, Mo, Andy sooner rather than later, but there will still likely be vets that will come play for cheap in the next few years. I think James can be a top 5 player for a long time if he does what I said above. Smith and Mozgov may decline in a few years or not. However, even if this team does not draft fantastically, I think if they actually buy into a motion offense,… Read more »
I thought Blatt did a great job helping TT, Delly, and Shump develop. Even turned Jared Cunningham into a useful piece
What are your examples under Griffin? The previous crew is totally irrelevant. That is like saying the Yankees are real smart because the stole Babe Ruth from Boston.
“They have a good chance to beat that Warriors team because sports”? Quite a contrast to “nobody can beat this Cavs team”, or “the Cavs have zero competition in the East. Zero.” I guess ‘because sports’ never applies to Cavs teams possibly losing to a lesser team.
The Zen Master is also panicking apparently…
http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/14739795/new-york-knicks-fire-coach-derek-fisher-23-31-start-season
Wow! At least they have a losing record so it doesn’t look as bad. Maybe they’ll hire Blatt in the off-season. Then Blatt can run the “Unicorn” offense for Portzingas, after trading Melo for a ransom.
If they hired Blatt for next season, that would certainly shut down the Lebron to the Knicks rumors that will be in play this offseason until he signs with someone or resigns with Cavs.
A bit of panic. Sure they lost 5 in a row but those were all solid teams. Who said that GSW kill coaches? They were right. That loss started the streak of 5.
They might wanna hire Fisher’s backup he could be available soon… /s
I WOULD THINK ONE OF THE MAIN TRAITS OF A GOOD G.M. IS TO BE ABLE TO AVOID ” KNEE JERK REACTION DECISIONS ” …IT IS VERY EASY / ENJOYABLE FOR US ( ME INCLUDED ) TO PLAY G.M HERE ON CTB AND MAKE TRADES BASED OFF EVERY GAME / POSSSESION —IS KY STRUGGLING TO SOME EXTENT AT PRESENT—-YEAH—DO I WANT TO TRADE HIM EVEN UP FOR MC CALLUM —HELL NO …… WINDY DROPPED SOME NAMES LAST NIGHT AS POSSIBLE TRADES ( MENTIONED THAT THE MOST LIKELY BIGGEST NAME TO GO WOULD BE MOZ ) BEN MCCLEMORE WAS MENTIONED —ANY… Read more »
I don’t see how anyone wants Moz given his FA status. Cavs are going to have to package all their future picks just to get an average player in a bad contract.
Would love McClemore at a decent price… just think he will cost too much.
No offense guys… but IMHO, trading Kyrie would be some Stepien-level ridiculousness…
Glad we have floor balance among the bloggers here!!!
Seriously, it would be such a Cleveland move. Ron Harper all over again. Rocky Colovito all over again. So utterly and comletely short sighted. None of those trades guarantees even competing with, let alone beating, the warriors. I will say again, the best and most successful franchises in the nba think long term strategy. Trading Kyrie is a panic move even more so than Blatt. You know what guarantees us being able to compete with the warriors, not just this year but the next 8 years is Kyrie reaching his potential and learning how to play within a system. He,… Read more »
You should have been on the pod. Tremendous take.
I agree… John B nailed it.
Yes. What John B says. No need to blog about any Cavs stuff anymore. Anything else would be a band aid.
Your second paragraph is solid. Thing is with James he doesn’t show up 100% till the playoffs. His chill mode may have worked in Miami because they all won together and knew what to do. These Cavs are young and do watch him so when he slacks off, they do too. And thats where you get the finger pointing and childish mentality of he doesn’t have to work harder so why should I? I don’t watch any other teams unless they are playing the Cavs so I don’t know if there are other players and teams who regularly stay back… Read more »
Some good points are made, but: 1. The “idiot Dan and panic Griffin” are totally off base. What has Griffin ever done in a panic? You are over your head into TEAMBLATT. It was obvious to everyone that Blatt was not getting the job done. Why in the world should the team stick with him when he has shown no signs that he could figure out how to deal with NBA players? 2. LeBron brings problems to the table, but he is still one of the top couple players. With LeBron but not Blatt, the Cavs will be in the… Read more »
Team Blatt right. Look I do not care that Blatt was fired, as I have stated multiple times. The timing was problematic and again reinforces the problems at the top of the organization. Worse than the Blatt hiring and firing were the Brown 1.0, Brown 2.0, Scott hirings, and some of the personnel hirings during James’ first stint. Idiot may have been too strong a word, but I do not think panic is, just as I would call trading a bunch of of the team away a panic move. My whole point with that paragraph was to make the point… Read more »
Listen, I think we all agree with what you said. I’m just afraid it is a bit idealistic at this point. Some of us are already relatively convinced that LeBron James will never change his stripes. It is only an attempt at pragmatism that leads us to this conversation.
I simply don’t believe in LeBron James’ basketball IQ. With that in mind, I think the only way to give the Cavs a chance is by surrounding him with players that mitigate his limitations. Even if that means making moves that don’t make sense out of context.
Maybe it is idealistic but I would rather give the team time to change with continuity than blow everything up. James did play way more off ball in Miami than he does now. He still handled it a fair amount but he was great at moving without the ball for a couple years there. I do not know if he can change. It is probably a longshot but I do not thinka team focused entirely Lebron can beat a team as versatile as the warriors or spurs. I just do not see that approach working anymore. Maybe not even when… Read more »
I’m entertaining the idea based on his current play and the fact that he’s played about six months of non awful defense in his career. But also, I’m spit balling.
Absolutely. Kyrie will never be great defensively. Average at best. But that offensive ability and Kobe-like competitiveness will definitely put him in a successful career barring injuries. The kid is 23, he will get there.
What Kobe like competitiveness? To me it’s closer to Harden or Howard than Kobe
The Warriors would have to gut their team to get KD. at what point is it getting dimishining (sp?) returns? like they are already unstoppable? why change when you’re on pace for 73 wins?
They wouldn’t at all. They’ll have 30+ mil in cap Space even without renouncing their cap holds. Renouncing Barnes will give the almost 40 million in cap space. You’re completely underestimating both how much the cap is going up and how well the Warriors have managed their salaries.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/how-the-warriors-can-afford-to-sign-kevin-durant-043710075.html
here’s what they would have to do in order to get KD. they would have to trade Iggy for nothing, release Bogut and renounce rights on every free agent they have. so they keep the big 3 but lose a lot of depth along the way.
And not resign Harrison Barnes. Plus would another high usage player like KD compliment Steph as much as those other pieces leaving?
Gar. I read the wrong year on the available cap space. Had the 2017 number in my head. Doesn’t matter. It wouldn’t be nearly that hard. Pretty easy to strong-arm the thunder into a sign and trade in that scenario.
if the Thunder do a sign and trade, they probably do it with the Clippers for Blake.
In sign and trades the player picks the destination
The Broncos were able to beat a heavily favored offensive juggernaut (also a great defensive) team of Panthers with a suffocating defense and a half-legged offense. I hope the Cavaliers watched that team.
Too bad it was only one game. Cavs would have to play maybe 7 of them.
So be it. Not gonna lose hope.
I am calling this Super Bowl a fluke. Several officiating blunders, all favoring the Broncos. The fumble recovery TD was set up by an “inconclusive” on a long reception. That is 7 points. When Panthers had major momentum, the pass interference flag that was picked up lead to a FG try. On the FG there was a major offsides right in front of an official, which led to a missed FG. Without those two blown calls IN A ROW, there would have probably been a TD or at least a game tying FG. The Panthers play calling was also beyond… Read more »
Are you serious on that 2nd paragraph you wrote or you just forgot the /s?
Haha. TBH I don’t know much about super bowl or the nfl. Didn’t follow that sport for even 5 consecutive games. I just like that Broncos underdog storyline. Also Peyton Manning. Hopefully that story rubs off on our Cavs.
To me that was blatantly incomplete. The nose of the football grazed the ground before he established control. Incomplete. There was no chance they would overturn it I had no idea what Mike Carrey was talking about. But since he’s wrong most of the time I wasn’t surprised. Most of the calls went the Broncos way but that was because the Panthers lost composure. I didn’t see the offsides your talking about but I thought that it was a decently called game. They were super tight on after the play stuff but that hurt both teams. The Talib one could… Read more »
I won’t trade Kyrie. That’s crazy. The weakest point of this team in terms of personnel is in the center position. And I think Griff is going to address that w/o gutting the roster into half. Who do you think can help us and we could get possibly with only letting go of Mo,MDN,Sasha,RJ and BHE and picks?. I’m not saying of any big names or even mid tier guys. Just serviceable bigs.
Cavs are more hungry for ball handlers than bigs in that scenario
Honestly, if KD goes to the Warriors, the Warriors would have to reconstruct their team, and that would disrupt their chemistry. They’re already an all-time great team. Adding a ball dominant star, doesn’t fit their mold. I still think they’d be great, but I’m not sure that they are better. At least that’s my first reaction to it. I don’t see it happening though.
I don’t think Durant needs to be ball dominant though. I think he just slides into Harrison Barnes role and it would just grow exponentially. His usage would drop drastically and it would be a total shame but Durant might just have that personality where’s he’s ok with the Kevin Love 3rd option role. Which is insane because he’s top 4 player in the league
I don’t think it’s that easy. The way that the Thunder run their offense, or at least have in the past, is pretty archaic. Now that’s not all on Durant, but I think it would have to be an adjustment he’s willing to take, and may take time for it to gel. I also don’t like the idea of losing potentially 3 very impactful role players to sign him.
I’m kind of for it just so the Westbrook to Cleveland hype train can start to make the rivalry that much better.
Great Podcast…. if people want pseudo-positive takes, then go listen to the local media excuse train (ie Tony Rizzo, Jeff Phelps, Andy Baskin, Chris Haynes…), fed by the Cavs organization.
agreed whole heartedly about the JR comments about the refs… If JR got away with the same things that Iggy did with at GSW, he’d be second team all defense.
Awesome pod. I think it was a little harsh on Kyrie’s defense. I mean you have to remember he is coming back from major knee surgery, and these are fairly meaningless games. It’s not like LeBron sets a good example for defensive effort LeBron never makes an easy play. His problem is making things harder than they have to be to maintain his savior ego. Glad more people are coming to their senses (I hope) that LeBron actually is not the self acclaimed basketball IQ genius that he says he is and has hidden agendas for his own ego. He… Read more »
wait, Kyrie Irving for CJ McCollum? never in a million years should the Cavs do that trade. ever.
And Lou Williams! Don’t forget that.
You forgot the /s…
Jesus…. listening to the first part of the podcast, you’ll think Delly is the 1 overall draft pick PG and Kyrie is the undrafted 2nd rounder. Kyrie is still rounding into form.. but I think this was overly negative on Irving. Like I understand he’s not where he needs to be, but some of this is just insane.
A little bit of a hate fest but not everything they said is untrue. Delly seems to be adding more value on offense this season to date but Kyrie is having a pretty rough year. Kyrie is 10 points down from last year (117 per 100 poss last year, 107 this year). Delly is 113. I am willing to give him another month though. People forget apparently that he was hurt and he’s only played one month. I will say that looking at D-Rating (points allowed per 100 poss) both Kyrie and Delly are the same at 106. One is… Read more »
ORtg and DRtg is heavily affected by team defense. It’s not a very reliable stat when used team versus team. So the McCollum numbers aren’t quite what they seem. RPM is still flawed but a little less team influenced. DRPM hates Kyrie and slightly dislikes McCollum and Delly. Still, it should be pointed out that Dellavedova’s defensive numbers don’t paint him to be an elite defensive force. And he isn’t. He is a good onball defender against some guys, and not so good against others. The team defense and PnR defense is what separates him from Kyrie. His rebounding influence… Read more »
To your last statement, you can’t look at that in absolute terms. McCollum would not be 107/108 on the Cavs and Kyrie would not be 107/106 on Portland. Playing with Lebron has to be taken into account. Take TT for example. No other team would be crazy enough to offer him $82 million over 5. He wouldn’t have had the stats to even ask for $90 plus over 5 if not for playing with Lebron last year. Take Mozgov. He was more or less a scrub in Denver. In half a season last year you heard many fans saying he… Read more »
I’ll take a “my bad” on McCollum. My main point was comparing Delly and Kyrie. I threw McCollum in as I was listening to the guys banter the trade. I shouldn’t have done that. As a SW analyst I know better than that but emotion took over. I don’t think you make a Kyrie trade unless you got something solid, long term coming back. With Love and Kyrie’s youth, the Cavs could have a core for years to come, not just this season.
Ah Ben said what I was trying to but more concisely and better. Should have refreshed the page before posting.
Part of the rebounding is probably a lot more Richard Jefferson and Lebron at PF. Less Delly which you mentioned obviously a problem there too, but thats just across everything. Also I think I’d trade Irving for Chris Paul straight up. I know he’s 31 but I feel like Paul still has 2-3 years of elite play left especially when he can be spelled by Delly. I’m intrigued by McCollum if he can really play defense. I’m not sure we got the cap space to do it but if Durant were to go to GSW, Cleveland would become the only… Read more »
