Live Thread: Cavs @ Nets (#BigAppleWeekend)

The Cavs kick off a two game, two borough, three day weekend in the “city that never sleeps” starting tonight against the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center. And, after a long week of being in the spotlight for just about everything but basketball… what better place than the media capitol of the world to spend a few days? At least Kyrie gets to extend his birthday celebration with his family in New Jersey, LeBron gets to catch up with one of his dream team pals in Melo, and J.R… well, Swish probably gets stuck with Chaka Kaun and the Orange Mamba as his chaperones for the weekend.
Other than the fact that this is yet another back-to-back tonight, there shouldn’t be much the Cavs will need to overcome outside of their own levels of fatigue and boredom. It would be nice if Ty Lue can get the boys to continue to work out the kinks on defense, although the Nets, losers of nine of their last 11 games, shouldn’t put up much of a fight. The Cavs also reportedly have everyone save Mo Gotti available…

If the Cavs can play even half as well on offense as they did last night against the Bucks, they should be able to rest the starters by the fourth quarter. Prediction: Cavs sleepwalk for a bit before finally cutting down the Nets, 116-94.
Welp, lost to a team that has losses to the Sixers, Lakers and Wolves this month, and that was when they still had Joe Johnson.
Sorry but any team that loses to the Grizzlies D-League affiliate and this Nets squad within a two-week window is not a serious contender. They have the talent but right now this team
is not awesome unless you think being the rich man’s Houston Rockets is awesome.
TOR has some pretty tough back-to-back stretches upcoming. I wouldn’t throw in the towel for #2 just yet. The Cavs are so close to the post season. Very tough loss but hang in there!
Setting aside the momentum issue #2 seed would be OK. I would rather see them play Pacers (7 seed) than Pistons (8) and then Hawks (3) or Hornets (6) than Boston or Miami who are 4-5 and one of which IMO will almost surely knock off Toronto. Obviously Cavs will be heavily favored against whomever they play on the East but less work is always better, they will need their gas tank full in the Finals.
Both Kyrie and Love have stunk on the 2nd games of b2b. Luckily there is only one more b2b left.
There are not any Nets or Grizzlies B-squad in the playoffs either. Harder to beat these teams on second game of B2B than Spurs or Warriors four times in 10 days? Seriously?

No one is assuming they are going to win the Finals except for Cols. I certainly never said that. I think they get to the Finals after a battle with Tor. Then its a battle
Sorry that’s fair. I just am a little bemused by how this “there are no b2bs the playoffs” has become a mantra for the “nothing to see here, everything is awesome” crowd (not you). I can’t agree how that is in any way a good reason for losing winnable games in-season regardless of when they are played. It’s like saying (as Cols has said) losing to bad team X doesn’t matter because they won’t make the playoffs so the Cavs won’t have to play them “when it counts”. Why does this team refuse to work harder in the paint when they suck at shooting 3’s? Just keep shooting anyways to a loss.
Look, this is a legit concern. Do they think this is a winning strategy against Raptors?? They will carve us up! They have to be willing to commit in other ways to score other than jacking up 3’s It can’t all be on Lebron.
It’s been their MO…when the threes are falling, they look ‘AWESOME’….when they aren’t, not so much…
And then when they aren’t “awesome” People here on the board will just call it “oh well we will get them next time just an off night” when there is a clear concern about certain aspects on why this team struggles..
They’ve struggled on the 2nd game of back to backs save LAL. Maybe it’s poor prep on Lue’s part or maybe it’s team focus. It shouldn’t go down like that in the playoffs as they’ll have one opponent per round with rest in-between. Luckily it’s not a one-and-done like the NCAAs.
Well it’s just one of MANY concerns this team has. Sure b2b shouldn’t be a problem in the Playoffs. How about team execution? Offensive sets? Rotations and minutes? Dictating tempo etc..?

Team execution, sure. What do any of those matter when they shoot 10-38 from 3? Were they not open shots? It’s pretty clear why they lost. If you don’t think they will contend, don’t watch.
Lol. Who said they won’t contend? You mean any team will lose if they shot poorly even though they’ve executed well in other areas? Bull$hit. I guarantee you the team will win more times if they executed well on defense or ran other plays when they’re going garbage from downtown. IT WILL MATTER. Especially in the playoffs. It does seem like they are living and dying by the three. Not sure why they will sometimes shoot 25% and other times shoot 50%.
Almost everyone except James was bad, but KI goes 5-10 shooting last night with 8/8 assists and boards to 6-22 with 4 assists tonight. And poor defense on Larkin who scores 16 with 7 dimes.
This season has really burnt me out. Its been exhausting. I think I’m ready for the tribe now…
Only good thing about this game is the Nets win hurts the Celtics draft…
So that was basically a 14-0 run by the Nets to close the game, aside from McRae’s 3 in the dying seconds.
Good news is LBJ is still the best player in the league. Bad news is everyone else is incredibly inconsistent. Kyrie is really struggling with his shot.
I hope that kind of team doesn’t get to the finals.

I have to agree. Maybe they should lose it! Maybe it’s the kick in the ass to wake up and play harder.
They don’t deserve and probably won’t keep the one seed. Our 2nd unit got the 4th quarter off to a terrible start, and played poorly all night. RJ and Frye were particularly dreadful.
