Banana Boat Dreaming
2016-07-05It’s still another two days before NBA Free Agents can officially sign all of the paperwork they agreed to over the long holiday weekend, but certain rumors are still floating around on a large yellow raft. The Cavs have been mostly quiet about their plans, other than LeBron’s quick trigger Tweets of congratulations to former Cavs Timofey Mozgov and Matthew Dellavedova, yet social media has been aTwitter with folks wishful thinking and pipe dreaming (not of the JR variety) about the possibility of Dwyane Wade bringing his talents to the shores of Lake Erie.
Despite the hype and cryptic tracking of private jet tail numbers, the hard facts remain that the Cavs just don’t have the resources to bring DWade into the fold. Beyond Wade agreeing to take a massive paycut to accept a minimum $3.3M offer, the only other way #3 could be in a wine & gold uni for the 2016-17 season would be if the Cavs would be willing to trade Kevin Love to the Heat for him. And, even if that were a possibility, it’s highly unlikely Pat Riley and Mickey Arison are in any way, shape or form willing to facilitate that kind of move to help LeBron or Cleveland.
But, that doesn’t stop some from going bananas…
DWade reportedly was on a plane w/ LeBron & Dan Gilbert last night.
Today, he cancelled his meeting w/ the Bucks scheduled for tomorrow.

According to Jason Carr, the son of Cavs legend Austin Carr, DWade to Cleveland is a "done deal" and should be announced later this week.

Brian Windhorst, who usually has some inkling of things Cavs and Heat related, posted this Tweet this morning…
Dwyane Wade has canceled some free agent meetings with teams he'd set up with this week, sources said.
— Brian Windhorst (@WindhorstESPN) July 5, 2016
But he followed it up just a few minutes ago with a live report on ESPN stating that DWade has told the Miami heat that their 2 year, $40M offer was about $10M too light. That’s right… WOW wants $50M over the next two, so it’s tough to imagine the Cavs figuring out a scenario that works given that it seems Wade wants to get PAID. Windy did mention that while the Bucks have dropped out, the Bulls and Nuggets still sound interested.
Chances are, however, that the Heat (having failed in their bid to snag KD) will eventually figure out a way to structure a deal to give Wade what he wants… since there’s not too many guys left they can pay. Meanwhile, it looks like the Cavs may yet be kicking the tires on a few other FAs before it’s all said and done, along with hopefully bringing JR and RJ back to the team.
On Sportscenter, @mcten just said the Cavs are looking at veterans like Norris Cole, Mario Chalmers, David West and Luis Scola.

No harm in dreaming though, right?
RJ is returning. TWO YEAR DEAL according to his snapchat.
Thank you DWade

So is Wade coming to Cavs ? Warriors fans are loving the Durant joining the team. Warriors losing to Cavs in finals played a big part. Adding Zaza as starting C is small move that will play huge dividends for dubs. Some here were of opinion that players hate Curry but that is not true at all. Every player would love to play in unselfish team with unselfish star in Curry, don’t believe me, Durant just joined Curry. Curry, Klay, Draymond and Iguodala tried very hard to convince Durant to come here. Curry’s message to Durant clinched it with addition… Read more »
Onviously curry wants someone else to carry the team after his choke-fest in the finals.
1-1 record in finals, ain’t bad.
He didn’t play a single team’s starting PG throughout the entire playoffs and didn’t really get a step on Delly last year until he went to the hospital and returned to the court 36 hours later…
Curry looks even more like a fraud MVP now than he did after LeBron just owned him. He had to go beg another MVP to join his arrogant little team. What a joke that team is.
No. 1 vs. No. 55 in playoff VORP:
http://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/vorp_career_p.html
Curry had a heady start to his career plus he just entered the peak. In 6 more years, he will be close to those legends in VORP.
Only if Kerr can figure out how Curry won’t have to play defense.
Here’s single-season playoff VORP. Curry ranks 26th for last year, when every opponent’s starting point guard was injured. That’s not likely to happen again.
This year he was way up in the triple digits.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/vorp_season_p.html
The Cavs showed everyone how to play the Dubs: Make Curry play some D. Either he does not do it, or he is too tired to make the long bombs. Everyone in the NBA will be trying that next year. Curry could be a laughingstock.
We haven’t signed anyone yet. Of course the Warriors fans are loving the Durant signing… Though, the backlash towards the Warriors and Durant will be a bit different from the Heat and LeBron. There are far more people who view this Warriors team as a “stacked deck” since the reason they could even sign Durant is because of the criminal contract Curry is on. There is also a feeling around the league that Durant doesn’t have a “dark side” to respond to the criticism and play the villain role as LeBron did in 2011. As for Barkley, he joined a… Read more »
Thanks for the reply. “dark side” is a good angle, I didn’t think of.
WF, First of all, I gotta congratulate you for a lot of good luck in the off season, including the incoming vets to fill the bench. I hope Ray Allan joins too, and I wish you could also get Carmelo Anthony and Rajon Rondo. So you guys have a good chance to win it all next year. On the other hand, us Cavs fans will be joined by everyone else in the world hoping that somehow it all blows up. The 2017 finals will very likely be a David vs. Goliath matchup of Dubs and Cavs. You guys are in… Read more »
I know Durant has the right to choose his team and all that, but joining the team that just knocked you out of the playoffs and won 73 games seems so wrong. I don’t think he’s ready to be as hated as that team is going to be next year. All that joyous crap from last year is going to get completely turned around because they are now the league’s villains.
I also cannot believe that Curry and Klay would be happy about this.
Couldn’t agree more. I don’t understand the Durant defenders saying it’s his “right” to choose the best situation for himself. Of course it’s his right, now he has to live with his decision making him a sissy in the eyes of most people.
Curry looks so soft after letting LeBron manhandle him in the Finals and then recruiting the former MVP to join his band of buddies. It’s comical.
Screw Durant. I hate d when LeBron did it, but it was more because of the TV special. This is just stacking the deck. But if the Cavs somehow beat this team, there is not question that LeBron is the GOAT, and not Jordan. Because beating that AS team is worth 5 championships. Think about how many All-Stars or former All Stars on that team. Their starting line up has 4 current AS. Then they have Iggy and D-West, who are 2 former All-Stars.
LeBron doesn’t have to do anything else to cement his reputation as GOAT and even beating this GSW team wouldn’t change many minds.
Whatever happens from now on is just more dessert. We got our title, LeBron’s legacy is fine.
Nobody that knows basketball thinks Jordan is better than LeBron.
If The Heat don’t win a title, Lebron looks cowardly and foolish. It could go either way with Durant and the Warriors, based on whether or not they win.
I love that we are champs.

The second coming of Jesus Shuttlesworth. After two years out of the league, can he bring any more than James Jones?
I’m not high on this move either. Allen couldn’t play any defense even when he hadn’t just taken 2 years off. I can’t imagine he’s any quicker and able to play defense. Yes, he can shoot, but why waste a roster spot when he will hardly play in the playoffs?
Yes, get all the washed up ring chasers on one team. No reason Shaq can’t give them 10 minutes a game, too…
https://twitter.com/RealGM/status/750559064728428544
It’d be hilarious if he signed with the Nuggets…going to a completely new organization when he basically runs the Heat. It would be quite the culture shock to him. But I don’t think that’s going to happen.
If he ran the Heat, he would be able to get a $50 million offer out of them.
I doubt he’ll really come to the Cavs, unless Griffin can work some wizardry and figure out how to pay him. But I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see him leave the Heat for somewhere.
I mean he basically has his run of the franchise. Salary is mostly out of his control. It’d be hilarious to see him go somewhere new, like some rookie. But I think he’ll sign with the Heat for some amount.
I can’t wait to bring my electromagnets to The Finals next year… KD and his screwy foot won’t know what hit them…

Bananas Foster is probably the perfect desert, and it’s better with cognac than rum. If you really wanna knock their socks off, try it with Grand Mariner, and some orange zest in.
My thoughts about the KD drama is that the league always have had a few big three’s even in the 80’s and 90’s (Bird/ McHale /Parish) (Magic/Worthy/Kareem) etc.
But the league allowing a big 4 that includes 2 former MVP’s in one team is just ridiculous.
Like I read today.
“the fact that the Warriors FEEL they need a Kevin Durant proves that Stephen Curry is the most overrated MVP of all time”
If an organization has a chance to make the team better, they should take it. Do you think the Cavs would have passed on Durant if they had the cap space? Anyway, this season all the pressure is on the Warriors, and very little of it is on the Cavs. I’m so excited for a season without constant hand-wringing!
Those 80s & 90s teams were built almost entirely through the draft; very different from what’s going on today. You could have made a case for Golden State to be considered in that vein until this week.
I have a solution to the hole created by Delly: Ty Lue, player/coach!
At first I thought that the Warriors would end up with obviously a great starting 5 with no bench but wow IMO Pachulia and West are 2 good players for the amount of cash that they spent to add them.
According to another tweet by someone in the media, forget who it was now, there are a lot of vet players saying they’d jump at the chance to take the min at GS. So I have no hopes that their bench will be terrible.
Exactly and I understand is how the league rolls now but to me the league allowing this KD to the Warriors thing will probably mean that the Cavs will try to the same next summer and so on with a few more teams becoming superteams it will affect the ratings of the rest of the teams that can’t do the same. My honest opinion.

Not sure who thought he’d consider that.
Only conceivable way would be a sign and trade with Shump and Frye or J.R. and Frye. Shump and Frye takes you to $17 million plus. I’d do it. Why not?
I don’t think Wade would be the wing defender the Cavs need. Wade would be abused by Klay/Curry in a seven game series. The Cavs really need to keep what they have, and add a solid wing defender along with one big.

BTW, there is no way Love or JR are moving for just Wade. I don’t think Griff or LBJ want that. I think the Wade thing would be Wade as FA accepting very low money (or LBJ doing accepting low money so Wade gets paid). If the Melo rumors are true, then Love could be on table. Melo is still a force. But Wade is too old for any smart basketball person to give up Love. I assume if we gave up just Love and got Wade and Melo, most people would be happy, right? Or, at the very least,… Read more »
Doubt it.
What do you doubt? People would not be happy with Wade and Melo for Love, or that any of this could actually happen?
No one but a fantasy player would want Melo. He is poison to a winning team. Look how JR bloomed when he finally got away from Melo.

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/dan-le-batard/article87862542.html
Is Wade a good defender at this point in his career?
He’s be a good player for us, but his inability to shoot from outside means he’s just a slasher. We already have LeBron and Kyrie who attack the basket. I’m not sure Wade is a huge positive on this team. And definitely not if it means we don’t re-sign JR. We need JR’s 3 point shooting.
Of course they do…

Just don’t ask for Jae Crowder…he is the definition of untouchable…
If the Cavs need to dump JR, Frye and Shump to get DWade then I would say no. The only guy I wouldn’t mind losing would be Shump cause he hasn’t improved at all. But I think both JR and Frye are going to be important for the Cavs moving forward.

If I’m the Warriors I’m nervous. You remove the following:
Barnes
Bogut
Ezeli
And add in:
KD
David West
Pachulia
That’s a major roster change. Pachulia will start at center and David West will come off the bench. Ask the 2014 Cavs and 2010 Heat how hard it is to win a title with a major roster shake up. Which you can make a good argument the 2016 Warriors have on their hands.
The Dubs might be the Predator… but we have Arnold…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNr0WXQ3Ho4
Nice ;)
LeBron is obv Arnold
Kyrie is Carl Weathers
Love is Jesse Ventura
JR is shirtless Billy on the log scene
JFJ is Anna- hangs on closely to the coattails of Arnold, stays out of the way, survives at the end
All these rumors surrounding Wade are rather intriguing and provide a good laugh, but what it all comes down to is, how much money is LeBron willing to pass up?
The “right” thing to do would be for LeBron to give up some money the way Wade did for him and Bosh. I say take that $3.5m and take $7-8m from LeBron’s salary and now you’re offering $10-12m to Wade. LeBron makes $16m and Cavs go back to finals.
Sign them both to and 1/1 and see how it goes…
The cap rules don’t work like that. One of them would have to take 3.5 mill and nothing else. One of the many reasons why it won’t happen.
Exactly. Cavs would need to be under the cap for Wade and Bro to split. So one Wade needs to slide into an exception.
Hmmmmm… interesting proposition Batman. Well that blows donkey balls.
How about if LBJ writes Wade a personal check for say..,,$ 10 million?
L: I’ll pay for the next banana boat ride.
A good read on the situation in GS (for those hoping like hell it doesn’t end it multiple rings):
http://sportsworld.nbcsports.com/kevin-durant-to-the-warriors-what-could-go-wrong/
Thanks for the pointer. That is excellent. Also happens to pretty much agree with what I have been saying, except that Joe has the stats and details.
Lloyd now reporting Cavs and Wade are going to talk. But acknowledges Cavs have major limitations in what they can offer.
http://www.ohio.com/sports/cavs/cavaliers-expect-to-talk-to-dwyane-wade-but-are-limited-in-what-they-can-offer-1.695084
The simple fact that reliable source has them scheduled to talk is huge. Wade obviously knows what the financial situation is in Cle and he wouldn’t even give them a meeting if he wasn’t willing to take less for a deal. There is NO WAY that they trade Love just to bring in a guy who maybe has a couple good years left in him. Barring a major move like that, they can only offer him peanuts and he’s apparently willing to listen…
Yep. And Wade just spent a week with LeBron. So any “official” meeting with Cavs signals something real could happen. The cap issues are a huge hurdle, but who knows. Both Wade and LBJ like drama and appreciate the unique basketball history of them coming together to take on Durant and Ws. They gotta be tempted.
. . . or he’s willing to talk to the Cavs to gain leverage in his Miami negotiation.
I have always thought that, after making my millions, I would be willing to take a pay cut to end my career in a fun way. However, if I had won 3 championships I don’t think I would take $3MM if $50MM was on the table.
Agree. That is the other possibility. Cavs only real threat that would force Riley to push to $50M.
This guy at the Miami Herald seems to think things are legit…and that the Cavs would just need to find a way to dump Frye and Shumpert (which, for the record, I don’t think they should do even if it does mean getting Wade).
http://blogs.herald.com/miami_heat/2016/07/so-whats-the-deal-with-dwyane-wade-and-cleveland.html
Its all BS. Cavs have no problem taking the meeting and no reason not to. LBJ is happy to fuel the flames and help his best buddy gain leverage, particularly against Riles, a guy he resents and was his “secret” motivation. It will all end with Wade on the Heat.
I was WRONG.
Yeah, just what the Cavs need, a soon to be 35 year old broken down shooting guard who can’t shoot threes. I really hope this doesn’t happen.
I’d take him for 3 mill, while not losing anyone else. But I don’t think you have anything to worry about…if he’s not meeting the Bucks, I think he’s staying in Miami.
The thing is, I can’t stand the guy either. He’s such a punk. Trying not to be biased, I’d be really really shocked if he came here. I just can’t see how it happens with the financials.
Sounds like Wade just told Adrienne Bosh that he is coming to the Cavs for the MLE. I imagine he will make it public soon.

Haha Hot Sauce, love the reaches you are making.
It’s just too much fun :)
It has been fun. Now that the pressure is off. Still despise GS tho. And now KD.
Lol…per Amico, Ray Allen on Dubs FA shopping list. I’m pretty sure the NBA turned into a really lousy sitcom over the summer…
If they sign Ray-Ray… Cols might just have to start rooting for the Dubs…
David West signs with the Dubs for peanuts. It’s just comical at this point.
I’m so relieved. West is washed up, he murdered the Spurs last year. I really hope that Steve Kerr plays him in important moments, like he did with Varejao and Ezeli.
And most importantly, no Xavier guys on the Cavs. Keep em away
Agree. West was terrible in playoffs this year. He is not really big, and he can’t play small ball because he is a post-player. Worst of all worlds in new NBA.
Agreed as well. I’ll take 2013 West though, if you have him.
Yeah… I thought Barbosa was washed up too…

Nope. someone else took Cook. He sucks anyways.
Actually I have no idea if Cook sucks. He’d probably be fine as a Delly replacement.
If that were the case, he’d be on the Cavs roster right now. You had it tight the first time – he’s undersized, and not really an NBA player. (right now, anyway)
Yeah, Cavs had a chance to watch him for a whole season in D league. If they thought he was worth a roster spot they’d have snatched him up.
Cook was the D-League rookie of the year, but he’s looking for an NBA contract. The Cavs cut him last fall to keep Jared Cunningham.

You guys are funny. Wade is not coming here, not even close to it.
I can’t believe we’re looking at Norris Cole and Mario Chalmers but won’t match for Delly. Delly is head and shoulders better than both those guys. I’m actually quite surprised LBJ doesn’t want Delly, or demand he come back, or whatever influence we’re pretending he has.
Lowe tweeted that one of the free agent team meetings Wade canceled was with the Bucks, which surprised me. I thought there was at least a possibility he’d go there. Just makes me more certain that he’ll eventually sign with Heat. With Delly, I think it’s all tax crap. They’d pay him 9-10 mill, but with the tax on top, along with the need to sign JR, I’m guessing it was too much. I don’t think you can criticize Gilbert given he is paying $54 million in luxury tax dwarfing any other team. I think Griffin knows how much it will take to sign JR, and that is perhaps the biggest reason the team isn’t matching Delly’s offer. I wish the Cavs would match, however, Gilbert will have another ugly luxury tax bill this coming season also.
Yep. This is it exactly. JR is more important so we will pay him and find a guy to play some regular season backup PG minutes.
Delly not playing in the Finals was extremely revealing.
I’m not being critical of Gilbert. I’m being critical of the people who were shrieking “DAN DONT CARE ABOUT THE MONEY!!!!!!” Uh huh…
Exactly MikeO. I don’t have a problem with him uses his money his way. I felt the same about Varejao. But don’t act like the budget is unlimited when it really isn’t. Just say the truth: Championships are fun, but so is money. Gonna save a little on this one.
They still could’ve moved Shump to keep him.
I don’t agree with moving Shump to keep him, unless you get something of equal value. Shump, despite his very down year, has a higher ceiling than Delly, which matters more in the postseason. Delly is a strong PG for 25 minutes a night during the regular season. Because his athleticism is not elite, he struggles against the top 3 or 4 teams in the league. It doesn’t make him bad, or useless, but in the playoffs you have to pick your spots more with him. Shump has elite length and athleticism, even though he makes forehead smacking mistakes at… Read more »
Yep. Trading Shump to keep Delly would be really stupid.
Bingo
Laughable
LeBron made Delly $10m a year. He made Norris Cole and Mario Chalmers into starting PGs in Miami. That’s what happens when you play with LeBron.
I’m happy Delly got paid, dude is now set for life! But he’s going to be awful without LeBron.
He wasn’t ‘awful’ before Lebron. Wasn’t worth 10 mill a year, but lots of guys making 10 mill plus going forward aren’t ‘worth’ it.
Yes, yes he was.
He was one of the best players on the team before Lebron came back, so you are wrong yet again. Must suck to be you.
No. He really wasn’t. He wasn’t good until this year. And even then he turned back into garbage after March or so.
OK. Screw Haynes, Melo just posted THIS!?!?!?
https://twitter.com/carmeloanthony/status/750400552165597185
That kid cracked him up….perhaps Melo and Lala are adopting him?
Haynes posted a article that’s a bucket of ice water on the Wade stuff. Damn it. I still hold out hope. LBJ makes moves happen in mysterious ways.
Assuming the Cavs sign JR and RJ and pick up a solid vet for the minimum, they will be fine. Then winning the title next year will be all the more impressive and satisfying.
It is about 50/50 if the Dubs will be a lot better next year, or a lot worse. I just wish they could add Carmelo. Then the entire crew would be blasting away with no passing what so ever!
The chances of them being a lot worse are relatively minimal. KD is just too good and he fits their pace-n-space style perfectly. They have completely given up on competing in the post, however, so that may be a problem against some teams. I’m with you about staying the course (resigning JR/RJ and adding a vet or two) leading to an EXTRA satisfying championship next year. I don’t think adding Wade really puts this team clearly on another level, plus it adds the constant drama of “when will Melo and CP3 arive????” I, personally, am hoping Wade takes 25M from… Read more »
The chances of them being a lot worse are nonexistant (barring injuries). ‘A lot better’….hard to be ‘a lot better’ than they were last year, but yes they will probably be better. May not win 70 games, but better, anyway.
There is plenty of chance for “a lot worse”. Historically, lots of star packed teams have devolved into fighting over who is shooting the ball. Last year the Dubs played great when everything was going right. Don’t be so sure that will continue.
Nah. Their biggest issue was lack of guys who can get a bucket one-on-one without all their screening BS. Durant can do that. They will win less games but be unstoppable in the playoffs until they meet beast-mode LeBron surrounded by Kyrie, Wade and Carmelo.
Yeah, barring injury I just don’t see “a lot worse” happening. WAY too much talent. Find me another team that had anywhere near this talent that didn’t do well
Scoring KD with the sacrifice of Barnes and Bogut is a no-brainer. Starting Ezeli will hurt at first but they’ll adjust and be better than ever. Only injury or a Green suspension will derail them . . . again.
I’d be ecstatic if Wade signed with Cleveland. But the likelihood of that is zero. There’s just no way a guy leaves ~$20M on the table to come play here, even if LeBron is his best friend.
I sure would love it, though. Kyrie-Wade-LeBron-Love-TT. Then re-sign JR. That would let us compete with GS.
B-b-but…..he followed the Cavs on Twitter!
How about Love for Melo?! I’d rather we pulled that one off. Then re-sign JR.
Kyrie-JR-Melo-LeBron-TT
I’m a fan.
What are you smoking? That would ruin the Cavs and save the Knicks!
Melo brings nothing I’d want. At this point, only way Lebron plays with Melo is if Lebron goes to the Knicks, imo.
Melo ain’t a winner.

Wade doing a little trolling with his Tuesday morni coffee…
From what seems like a pretty level-headed rundown of the Wade situation by a Miami reporter: — And yes, joining LeBron James in Cleveland is an option. Among a few still, and “a long shot” due to the economics, according to a source, but definitely an option. The Cavaliers don’t currently have anything other than the taxpayer mid-level to offer ($3.48 million), which would be a huge reduction in pay. So they would need to make multiple deals to accommodate more salary. Or James would need to take a historically large cut, which wouldn’t sit well with the players’ union,… Read more »
It’s an option, sure…retirement is also an option. A better option is taking $50 mill…
Can we set aside this Wade nonsense and talk about whether Durant, Lebron, Curry and Wade are helping or hurting their ‘legacy’? That stuff is fascinating…
Haha. Eph the Warriors. What a bunch of babies. They cannot handle LeBron.
LBJ and Wade are the only ones you can really discuss legacy at the moment… they both have three rings and many trips to the Finals… still too early for Curry and KD to determine…
Cavs are really light on big men. I hope Tristan’s iron man run continues.
If you call Love, LeBron, Tristan, RJ as light on big men, I guess so.
RJ isn’t on the team and isn’t a big man.
Would love to see the Cavs add Norris Cole (tax payers exception) and David West (vet min). Resign JR, let Chicago pay DWade 25M/yr, then start looking for trades that could net another wing defender capable of at least matching up size-wise to KD. F this banana boat crap…
I’m a fan of Norris Cole, ya.
On a team with LeBron Norris Cole is pretty useful.
Here’s the SC article…

I just got an alert that said Wade was meeting with Bulls and Nuggets for a 2 year 50 mil deal.
Wade would be really stupid to leave Miami.
Why? What’s left for him there, especially if Bosh never comes back?
Because he’s the man there. Why waste years of building up a reputation and then throw it all away to chase an extra ring? If he hadn’t won a few championships already, I can see leaving to chase rings the way Barkley did. But leaving seems to offer little upside and less cash. If the Heat are willing to pay him he should stay.
There’s upside if Bulls or Nugs or some other team is willing to pay him the $50M he wants… and I’m sure there’s upside for him to play with his pals again like LBJ or Melo or CP3 if any of those teams can work something out. If Bosh doesn’t return (and it looks doubtful to this point), all he’s got is Whiteside and a bunch of rooks…
Get 23-25 mil in other cities where there’s state tax? Or get 20 mil in miami, no state taxes, stay being the man and continue the legacy of being a lifer?. He might be wasting 1 year, but next year where theyll have money, Riles will certainly find pieces for him. Im with cols on this. Its better to stay in miami.
There is (most, most likely) nothing to see here…get ready for Wade to sign with Miami in a few days, even if he had a few words with the Cavs to screw ith Riley….
Still hate Durant
