KneeCap: Summer Cavs 79, Summer Bulls 85 (or, Title Hopes Washed Away)
2016-07-18It was fun while it lasted… but the summer run had to end sometime for these Cavalier hopefuls. While they unfortunately didn’t make it to the Tournament Championship game to face former Cav draftee Tyus Jones and the TWolves, the Summer Cavs showed a lot of fight, effort and talent in getting further than expected. Their endless summer was finally cut short by an undefeated Bulls squad that featured a formidable front line and some hot three point shooting by rookie Denzel Valentine.
Even though the Bulls shot just 36.4 percent from the floor, and trailed the Cavs by 10 at the half, they mounted a massive comeback to outscore Cleveland 49-33 in the second half. Turnovers played a big part of it with Chicago committing only seven compared to 17 for the Cavs. The Bulls, led by Bobby Portis and Christiano Felicio, also dominated the smaller Cavs frontline 32-18 in the paint.
The Cavs got out to a hot start, getting 10 points from Jordan McRae in the first quarter and 14 points from Kay Felder in the half, to build a 46-36 halftime lead. But, the Bulls turned up the defensive intensity in the final 20 minutes, pressuring the Cavs into turnovers and using a 17-4 run to take the lead. Chicago went ahead for good on Valentine’s banked in prayer of a three-pointer with 2:24 remaining.

Killer Shrimp led the Cavs with 22 points to go with five assists, four rebounds and three blocks, but he seemed to struggle a bit once the Bulls keyed in on him. Orange Mamba was a little less spectacular than he’d been over the last few games, finishing with just 16 points, six boards, and five turnovers. Maybe McRae just ran out of gas, but he was only able to hit 6-16 from the field, and got to the line just twice (a stark contrast to his previous outings). The only other double-digit scoring performance came from Raphiael Putney who chipped in 15 points and six boards.
Felicio and Portis led six Bulls into double figures, combining for 34 points and 15 rebounds. Valentine and Jerian Grant both scored 13, while Dez Wells and Spencer Dinwiddie also hit double digits. The Bulls will take on the TWolves tonight to decide the Summer League Las Vegas Tournament Championship.
Meanwhile, the surprising Summer Cavs, who started just 1-2 in the “regular season” wound up with a 4-3 overall record after taking down the Celtics, Lakers and Nets in the Tournament. McRae proved that Orange might just be the new Black as far as Mambas go, notching a First Team All-Summer League spot…

McRae finished third in scoring in the Summer League with 24.3 ppg. On the downside, it was on just 37% shooting from the field (29% from downtown), but he did get to the line an amazing 81 times in seven games.
Kay Felder also had a positive impact overall in the summer session, averaging 15.3 ppg and 3.9 apg. While his size was an issue at times, his hustle and ability led to some terrific plays. The upsides were his floor vision, passing and mid-range jumper. The downsides were his difficulties finishing over, passing over or guarding taller players. Also, though he shot a respectable 42% from the field, his shooting from distance needs considerable work at just 22%.

Other standouts among the hopefuls were DeAndre Liggins and Raphiael Putney. Liggins is a plus defender, and showed some flashes of offensive ability as well. Unfortunately, he just didn’t get a volume of shots, but seems to have the skills to catch on with either the Cavs or another team for training camp at least. Putney is intriguing because of his three point accuracy. He shot 14-32 for the summer for a sizzling 44%. Most of them were of the catch and shoot variety (usually off of Felder assists), but that kind of clip should get him an invite to an NBA camp.
Even though the Cavs’ Summer League experience didn’t wind up ending with a second Championship in 2016, the experience still made for some surprisingly entertaining viewing. Based on the performances, I fully expect McRae and Felder to get serious consideration to make the 2016-17 NBA squad, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see both Liggins and Putney at training camp.
Sadly, after tonight’s Championship game, it’ll be a while until training camp. But, just because there aren’t any games going on, doesn’t mean we won’t be bringing you interesting stuff here at C:tB. Stay tuned for lots more summer fun!

Embarrassed my city is holding this convention. Propagating racism, xenophobia, ignorance. This party is in shambles and trying to drag the country down with it. Been shooting us in the foot for the last sixteen years.
Careful BL…there’s a few Trump supporters on the CtB boards…
Philadelphia will be even more embarrassed at the next convention.
Why? They’re not responsible for those guys’ behavior, and I’m beyond happy with how the city is behaving in light of the loonies (in and out of the Q).
Bulls may have gotten a real steal in Valentine…
Actual steal is felder. 54th pick, again 54th pick.
Valentine FTW
HOLY COW! This Summer League Championship is ridiculous! Already in OT and Minny just banked in a three to tie it again!
Absolutely loved what I saw from felder this summer league. His performance was much better than many of the higher picks in the draft including Jaylen brown, denzel valentine, thon maker. In fact out of the rookies he was one of the best performers. He is much better defensively than i anticipated, providing pestering full court pressure on nearly every possession and he averaged around 1.5 steals and nearly a BLOCK per game in 29 minutes. He has got seriously active hands. His three point shot has a ways to go, but considering his midrange game i think he can… Read more »
Yep. Better at this stage than Delly was. A much more mature offensive game with pesky defense.
Also anyone see that crossover and behind the back pass for a wide open 3pt shot. There is a reason this guy averaged 9.3 assists in college. That pass was steph curryesqe, and no I am not saying he is that or ever will be in the same universe but that pass reminded me of some behind the back curry passes.
EG! The summer isn’t over! Olympics just around the corner!

Then the Olympics, the 6th-21st, including Delly versus Kyrie on August 10th! This summer won’t ever end.
Oh yeah! I totally forgot about the Olympics…
#ZikaGames
Get out of here! They still hold the Olympics?
Kyrie should be on the Australian side too. What a traitor.
Thanks for the summer league coverage. I really appreciate it as I haven’t been able to catch the games.
I’m hearing today that JR wants 15m/yr, not sure for how long. I’m fine with that, I’m sure he is hearing offers close to that from around the league. It’s not like that’s Mozgov money or anything. Also with his age as a factor, we would maybe save a bit of money by going long- maybe 3/43 with a fourth year player option? That sounds like a great price for him.
Yep. Pay the man. 3/50 and be done with it.
I’d probably go 3/50 with the last year being a team option. I can’t imagine JR is asking for more than 3 years, tho who knows with #klutch at the helm.
Id go long on JR – shooting ages well
Happy to oblige… it’s been fun!
Talk about a non-story story… Summer is going to be so slow from here on out…

Generally I find anything starting with “espn.com” to be a non-story
Right. What ever happened to ESPN? Didn’t it used (like 20 or so years ago) to be the best sports info out there? ESPN radio is beyond lame; sports are rarely mentioned.
Are we getting a podcast this week about how awesome the Cavs are and how the Warriors are frauds?
Probably not, since I think you’ve covered that pretty thoroughly…
obligatory? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StTqXEQ2l-Y
I don’t think we’ve celebrated enough on this blog.
McRae isnt any good. Hes a high volume chucker that took tons of 1on3 drives and long stepback contested shots. I dont think he has a future with the Cavs (or anyone else really)
Sorry
He has a future as a bench guy who can come in and score every now and then. You don’t want him as a sixth man or anything but he’s OK as one of your top 12 or so players.
I agree, unfortunately. Unless his defense improves dramatically, he’s not going to have a place in the NBA. Its why I still prefer MDN, as much as McRae’s scoring bursts are fun. MDN was a better wing defender, which we need from the 12th and 13th guys on the bench. We’ve got enough scorers.
MDN had zero skills on offense and wasn’t any good no defense either.
He is what he is… potential to be instant offense in the right scenarios… Someone made a Jamal Crawford comparison, and that’s probably not far off…
Disagree completely. Just because he was asked to be a centerpiece scorer on this team doesn’t mean he can’t be an effective bench role-player.
Felder looks like an advanced version of Delly. Once he figures out NBA range he should be a solid addition.
Felder definitely has floor vision and passing skills… and can hit the mid-ranger with regularity. Would love to see him work on his finishes and his three point shot, but he seems to have a very assertive presence…
As soon as Felder shuts down Curry in a couple playoff games I will be buying in.
I’m betting Felder can shoot better than the 20% Delly managed in that series.
I am talking about 2015, when Delly outscored Curry in a couple games.
Dude couldn’t shot 25% in summer league, but ok.
