Upgraded Answering Machine
2016-07-25Sorry this wasn’t up sooner, but I’m technically on vacation this week. That was not the case for Coach Ty Lue, his agent and the Cavs, as the man known as “The Answering Machine” reached an agreement on a five-year, roughly $35M extension Monday, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin (as first reported by The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski).
Cleveland Cavaliers coach Ty Lue has agreed to a five-year, $35M extension, league sources tell @TheVertical.

As reported, the first four years are fully guaranteed, while the fifth year is a team option.
The “Luesurper” (who was already the NBA’s highest paid assistant coach), was promoted to replace former Coach David Blatt back in January when GM David Griffin decided the team needed further galvanization.
Despite some early growing pains, Lue was able to lead the Cavs to a 27-14 mark in the second half, and ultimately through a historic playoff run to capture to the team’s first ever NBA championship. Along the way, he earned the support and respect of LeBron James and the rest of his players, while exuding an almost constant state of calm both on the sidelines and in his post-game interviews.
Now that the Cavs have locked up their Championship Head Coach for the foreseeable future, they can turn their full focus on re-signing Free Agents LeBron James and JR Smith.

Nice stuff, EG. Thanks for being our breaking news reporter.
I’m curious – couldn’t we have kept him for the remainder of his contract (2 more years?) on his assistant salary? Not saying that would be a good move, just curious about the legality of it if anyone knows.
I do not know. But I’m really glad Danny G isn’t cheap and pays his guys.
Yes, we could have.
Lue deserves every bit of that money. What a great coach. He out coached the fake coach of the year Kerr.
Kaun retires!

One year, one title. He will be the answer to some trivia questions. DG+DG still managed to turn him into something in a trade. Those guys are good!
NBA scoring average: 0.92 ppg.
Career NBA Title percentage 100.
Kaun was a piece that was part of a Cavs championship. Enjoy your retirement!
This was also circulated on a few other sites which is kind of mind blowing when you think about it…
– Fun fact: Lue made $21,382,580 during his 11-year playing career in the NBA, with his highest salary of $3.5 million per year coming in years 8-10 (2005-08). In his first contract as a head coach, he will make almost $14 million more than he made during his career as a player and $3.5 million more per year than his top yearly salary as a player.
Hmm.. will LeBron be a Cav for 4 more years to play for the “best coach” in the league?
Could happen. Standing back from all this and looking at history of the Cavs, it seems that the past few years (starting with Lebron coming back) the team has made MANY smart decisions in terms of obtaining and keeping important players (and coaches…Yay, T-Lue). The Cavs team and organization are staring to build a reputation for smart choices…keep up the great work!!! And thanks Cavs Dan!!!
Yes. The next three years could lay an incredible foundation if they play it right. Championship culture takes a while to establish. Getting over the hump and winning the first one required a great player and, like all titles, for other stuff to fall just right. But it can easily be lost. Having the core locked up for a while will attract good coaching talent and good vet minimum talent, which helps to establish the championship habits that become culture after years of repetition. The hope, of course, is to have that culture established by the time LBJ retires so… Read more »
LeBron will probably be a Cav at least until he is 40. And they might be in the finals every year! This will allow Griffin to bring in top players at a discount, and LeBron is the only player ever that can organize a team to play vastly better than the sum of the parts. Just like last year. LeBron will surely be playing at an all star level at 40. If NBA teams continue to go small, LeBron can be the starting center on the All Star team in his 40’s. He will look like he is in a… Read more »
