Rio-Cap: USA 119, China 62 (or, Next Time We’ll Spot You 50)
2016-08-07Team USA’s fairly inevitable march to the Gold Medal in men’s basketball got off to a relatively ho-hum start against the extremely overmatched Chinese national team on Saturday afternoon in Rio De Janiero’s Carioca Arena. After missing their first five shots of the game, the boys in blue didn’t miss much else, as they used a series of runs and some suffocating defense to nearly double up the guys in red and white by the end.
Every player on the US side scored, and they were led by Kevin Durant’s game high 25 points on 10-14 shooting (including 5-8 from downtown), to go with four rebounds and six assists. DeMarcus Cousins chipped in 17 points, and Paul George had 15 off the bench. Kyrie Irving got the start at PG, and though he didn’t score in the first half, he went on a three point binge in the third quarter (knocking down 4-5, including three in a row) to wind up with 12 points to go with five assists.
Here’s his fourth triple… a pull-up heat check…

Overall, Team USA also nearly doubled up Team China in rebounds (52-29) and assists (31-16) as well as points. The lone bright spot for the Chinese (who are one of only two teams that don’t feature a current NBA player) was Yi Jianlian, who scored 25 points (none of his teammates made it to double digits). Yi did play three seasons in the NBA, and was the No. 6 pick in the 2007 NBA draft, four spots behind KD.
Up next for the stars and stripes steamroller… a Monday matchup with Team Venezuela (the other team without an NBA star since Nets guard Greivis Vasquez is out with an injury). Venezuela played the US team the closest during their five game exhibition tour, but that was still a 35-point blowout in Chicago that led coach Nestor Garcia to remark: “We don’t have a chance at this level.”
As for those who do have a chance… though it was widely thought that France might have the best shot at making things competitive with the US going into the Olympics (given their wealth of NBA talent including Tony Parker, Nic Batum, Rudy Gobert, Boris Diaw and Nando de Colo), they were routed by the surprising Australian team today, 87-66. With Patty Mills, Andrew Bogut, Aaron Baynes and old friend Matthew Dellavedova leading the way (Delly had a game high 10 assists), the Aussies might just be the new underdog to watch out for this week.
Looks like we’ll get an early look at the Uncle Drew v. Wombat faceoff on Wednesday night in Game 3 of the Preliminary round…
PG-13’s jumper has been wet from outside tonight…
Boogie fouls out…
US just toying with them now in second half…
Venezuela ripping a page out of the Dean Smith playbook with the strategy of running out the shot clock on every play. But Smith usually employed the four corners during the last few minutes of the SECOND half, not the first. :)
And usually UNC would have the lead when they did it…

USA turns up the D and Kyrie finds Melo for a couple of threes…
Klay Thompson not shooting well…
Tied at 18 after one quarter… Probably the worst USA has looked since Athens…
Venezuela playing some good D and forcing USA into a lot of turnovers…
Team USA not shooting well… trailing Venezuela by one now…
Sweet cross-over for the step back j off the glass from Kyrie… I kinda love that shot in his repertoire…

Can I just say watching Delly today playing for the Boomers was intensely satisfying. Dude shot 7-8, scored 23, added 13 assists and had 0 turnovers. So happy for him. Aussies just might might medal.
And he couldn’t get on the floor in the NBA finals and was miserable for most of the playoffs. It was way more satisfying to watch Irving torch the Warriors and the entire trade Irving and start Delly contingent at CtB eat their words.
haha, Cols. You’re the best. Always ready to go the extra mile. Delly is a great story any way you frame it. It’s satisfying as a Cavs fan to see him display the skills he developed while playing on our team. Also, I would think a congratulatory tweet from Leb would at least put Delly in your “good guys” category. https://twitter.com/kingjames/status/748977711905841152
This is fun.

Curry is such a fraud. “Please Kevin,” Curry says while tears fall to the floor, “please come save our team from LeBron”.
EVIL I DON’T KNOW WHERE YOU COME UP WITH ALL THE PICTURES BUT MAN YOU ALWAYS ” MAKE MY DAY ” CAN WE CALL THE RECENT CONTRACT GIVEN TO ” KILLLER SHRIMP FELDER ——-FELDER OF DREAMS ” SORRY THAT IS MY BEST
I miss Cavs basketball. Not enough Kyrie in the Olympic games… August is rough…

Kyrie is so good.
Thanks, for the writeup, EG. I watched the game and, while it was not interesting from a basketball perspective, it’s really intriguing to see how NBA stars redefine themselves in each others’ presence. It’s like a better all-star game. Kyrie took a while to find his scoring touch, but when he did, the bench was loving it. I was also pumped when they decided to unleash Boogie on the interior. He didn’t like one of the fouls he received so Team USA decided to ride his anger for a bit in the second half. Final thought: while Melo is the… Read more »
I wonder what the reason is for the talent disparity between USA and the rest of the world. How do some sports like soccer get played so competitively while basketball is a laugher? Is it jut not popular enough so it doesn’t attract top athletic talent in those countries?
That is because all the Americans play for the USA!
Often pondered that for various sports – I think comes down to the size of the grass-roots population playing the sports. Brazilian soccer, US basketball, cricket in Australia, England and their … uh …..
Cricket is dying. NRL and AFL are the thing with basketball hopefully on the up. Each urban redevelopment in Sydney includes a basketball court now. It’s probably the cheapest way for developers to tick the box claiming they have provided community spaces.
Mainly? It’s cause soccer is the top sport everywhere else and it’s fourth or fifth here (at best). The top athletes play soccer everywhere else.
Its hard to be good at basketball. It helps a lot to be tall but the world is full of short people hence soccer.
