Rio-Cap: USA 100, France 97 (or, Une Touche de Trois)
2016-08-14The subtitle of this Rio-Cap can be translated either as “a splash of three” or “a three spot.” Both meanings would be appropriate or acceptable after the latest close call for Team USA in these Olympic games, as they were able to hold off an experienced French team (minus their floor leader, Tony Parker) by a mere three points behind the three-point shooting of a suddenly resurgent Splash Brother.
Yes, Klay Thompson, after struggling through the first four games of pool play shooting just 4-26 (3-18 from downtown), finally found his stroke, going 9-16 and 7-13 from three for 30 points. And, the Americans needed almost all of them, as they couldn’t quite shake the French. The US had comfortable leads of nine at the half and as much as 16 late in the third quarter, but France mounted a strong comeback attempt in the fourth, outscoring the US 28-19.
Aside from Thompson’s barrage, Team USA also got a strong game from his new Warrior teammate Kevin Durant. After taking just four shots in the previous squeaker against Serbia, KD took just two more in this contest, but made all six (including 4-5 at the stripe) to finish with 17 points. He also pulled down six boards, dished four dimes and snagged two steals. The only other Americans to make it to double digits were Carmelo Anthony and Kyrie Irving, who both had 10. Though he didn’t score much, Kyrie did have one highlight vining of Boris Diaw…

Both DeMarcus Cousins and DeMar DeRozan chipped in nine points apiece for the US, and DeAndre Jordan and Paul George also gave the team some timely buckets, as the Americans shot almost 56% from the field and 37% from three.
The French, however, matched the hot shooting of Team USA, also firing away at a 56% clip (although they were just 26% from downtown). With Parker on the sidelines resting his reported injured toe, France was led by their backcourt tandem of Nando de Colo and Tomas Huertel, who poured in 18 points each. Huertel had nine assists and eight rebounds filling in for Parker. They also got a good game from Nic Batum (14 points) and Joffrey Lauvergne with 12 points and five boards off the bench.
One of the big differences in this game from the last one against Serbia, was that the US moved the ball and distributed well to attack the French. They finished with 32 assists on 35 made shots, and were led by an Olympic record tying 12 from Kyrie. Uncle Drew joins LeBron, MJ, Phil Ford and Leon Wood in tying the dimes in a game record.
While many of his dozen were terrific, one in particular was patently Kyrie-diculous…

Team USA finishes Group A undefeated at 5-0 to earn the top seed going into quarterfinals play, but their inability to close out the last three opponents certainly leaves them looking at least somewhat vulnerable. Defense was still an issue against France, considering they were still able to get much of what they wanted offensively even without four-time NBA Champion Parker orchestrating things from the point. They will match up against whoever winds up fourth in the scrum that is Group B (where all six teams are still alive to advance) on Wednesday.
At least it appears that Thompson’s shot has returned in time to help keep the US on top. If their defense can also wake up a bit, they should have a strong chance for a three spot of gold medals.
Now you see me is a really Dumb movie.
I’m baffled why the US isn’t playing straight up zone with Jordan in the middle. He’s the best shot blocker in the Olympics (ok, maybe tied with rudy). I haven’t watched enough to judge. Is the US just scheming poorly on D? Is it execution?
Last I checked they were undefeated.
Yet not nearly as dominant as expected… Even PG-13 said he thought it would be easier than this…
Doesn’t feel like anyone is getting many blocks in the games that I’ve watched… Except maybe Bogut…
I thought zone wasn’t allowed in olympic play?
Nevermind, I’m dumb.
Teams exploiting poor pick and roll defense. Jordan and Cpusins not as good with pick and roll defense. Put Draymond there, team’s defense will pick up but not likely Coach will do that.
I’m bored. When do the NBA playoffs start?
Just write haikus and mostly true stories about fake Mvps
“mostly true” is a pretty big stretch there.
Seems like you have that well covered…

LIFE WOULD BE BORING WITHOUT COLS—-JUST HAVE TO TOLERATE HIS BEHAVIOR FROM TIME TO TIME –IT IS TOUGH ” BEING THE OLDER BROTHER ” SOMETIMES
It’s so glorious being Cavs fans this summer!
Hey! Cols works hard — jousting with whoever is up for it.
Cols… enough already…
But we are the champions!!!!!!!!!!!!
So be a gracious winner…
I am.
Not by endlessly repeating your opinion about Curry and the Warriors you’re not… Act like you’ve been there before…
It’s just too much fun being champs!
My bad for being enabler, I shouldn’t have responded to him to his reply to my post.
He just has a knee-jerk reaction to your handle… lol

“You look at Steph’s numbers, I mean, he averaged 30 [points], he led the league in steals, he was 90, 50, 40, and [the Warriors] won 73 wins,” James said. “I don’t think you really have any debate over that, really, when it comes to that award.”
Steph Curry was beside himself, if Durant wouldn’t join them he would have to find a way to beat LeBron James. He thought back to being blocked during a timeout, and his failure to shoot a three over Kevin Love, and the time he cried and threw his mouthpiece into the crowd while throwing a tantrum a 5 year old would be proud of. He thought of all these things and what it meant to be proven a false idol, a fraud if you will. He thought of all these things and made a decision. Not a proud decision, but… Read more »

The best thing about Irving is that even though he just owned the fake MVP and thoroughly destroyed any thought that Fraud Team was one of the best ever, is that he’s still getting better.
I know, the guy that took the mouthguard thrower to the woodshed is still a work in progress. I love it.
International game is different & the players are better than the general US public (Cols) give them credit for. The court is smaller & zones are legal. Makes it more difficult if you are relying on iso play & athleticism rather than team play with an emphasis on ball movement & off the ball player movement. No defensive 3second rule, so a great defensive big like Bogut can cause havoc. There’s a reason why the past 3 NBA champs have had Aussies playing prominant roles. You need guys willing to sacrifice for the betterment of the TEAM to win. Maybe… Read more »
if by sacrifice you mean sit on the bench and watch Kyrie and LeBron ISO the fraud MVP and win a title then sure.
Otherwise I have no idea what you are talking about considering the Austealia dude couldn’t see the floor during th Finals.
Make one more change, insert Draymond in place of Cousins to starting line up, team will win more easily. Cousins and DeAndre Jordan can’t guard pick and roll and Cousins can’t be trusted on big stage, can drag team down with foul troubles and TOs in addition to being lazy on defense.
Good point about Zones. A more traditional PG like Chris Paul would have been better suited to play point especially for this team that doesn’t have much of a system and plays with more improvisation.
Think how badly the US team would be doing if the disappearing tantrum thrower fraud MVP Curry was the point guard. Maybe he would’ve bricked a few threes or thrown behind the back passes to no one. Or started crying and throwing his mouthpiece all around.
It’s a great thing we got Irving in there instead of that faker.
col, you make no sense and as clueless as one can get. Your hatred of warriors or curry is not healthy. USA would have lost without Klay’s performance yesterday, you know from ‘fraud’ team. Also, you talk like Cavs swept Warriors or something. They were down 1-3 and won one of the closest series ever aided by ‘play of the season’, the block by Lebron and the ‘shot of the season’ by Kyrie with 30 secs left. Didn’t Lebron fire Blatt after losing to warriors in reg season. I , for one, think if warriors managed to close out from… Read more »
“Please KD, please come save us from LeBron”, sniffles Curry.
Another view of that Kyrie-diculous oop…

I actually do feel like we’re starting to take Kyrie for granted
Boogie isnt very good
Cavs rule.
That alley oop was SICK
I have a strange feeling that an upset is brewing for the US squad. Hope I am wrong. Thx for the Olympic write-ups.
