Podcast Episode 110: Preseason Cavs, Postseason Tribe
2016-10-17https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/episode-110-preseason-cavs-postseason-tribe
With the preseason winding down and the regular season just over a week away, Tom and I hopped in the the podcast booth to discuss all things Cavs. Top on our list was the Cavs effect on their neighbors, the Cleveland Indians. The wine and gold definitely bring an energy to Progressive every postseason game. The team’s effect is palpable everywhere they go, but when LeBron and Co. show up on the diamond, the “Cleveland effect” is like nothing we’ve seen before in sports. Tom and I will admit, there’s a little more baseball talk than any other CtB Podcast.
Also in our discussion: the J.R. Smith contract, the backup point guard debate, and how do the Cavs match up with the Warriors? We also hit on LeBron’s political leanings, locker room talk, Tom’s home improvement projects and the Cavs depth in the middle.
As always, we can be found on above, on SoundCloud, or iTunes.
Guys, finally had a chance to listen… awesome stuff!
Nate on Hammurabi was one of the weirder things I’ve ever heard, until I checked it out…

It’s uncanny!
A thing of beauty.
This is getting surreal. Losing three starting pitchers — the kind of thing we’re used to. Winning six playoff games in a row anyway –that isn’t part of the usual script.
That is what happens when LeBron comes home.

Nice. But Evil, man, what time zone are you in?
PST, but doing a lot of business with my people in China this week so odd hours…
Francona is a genius
There’s a new sheriff in town…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Agpx6MPNU2s
And his name is Andrew miller
I know Miller is signed through 2018, but I hope they try to extend him this offseason.
LOL at Bauer flashing the 3-0 sign with his injured hand…
WINDIANS!!!! Even the Cavs didn’t start 3-0 against Toronto!

Tribe wins! Bullpen goes 8.1 innings for an improbable 3-0 lead.
Damn that ground rule double…. #Baseballshouldnotbeplayedonturf

KNOW I AM ” JUMPING THE GUN ” ( AND HOPE I DON’T JINX US ) —–BUT IF THE TRIBE HANG ON DOES HE PITCH KLUBER IN 4TH GAME ON SHORT REST OR WAIT FOR REGULAR ROTATION TURN —- WE ARE BASICALLY DOWN TO 2 STARTERS
Francona already announced that he’s going with Kluber tomorrow… likely because this was a full bullpen game and he might need them all again for a Game 5 when he starts the rookie Merritt…
And then Crisp nabs the line drive to end the 7th. Baseball…
Allen got squeezed on a couple pitches against Bautista…
Allen in before Miller. Francona keeping things interesting all night long.
Up 2 through 6. Shaw does his job. Ready for Miller and Allen. Or maybe they can blow it open with their bats…
Or this one…

Sorry I missed the pod today… but I didn’t miss this party up north…

YOU JUST GOT TO LOVE THE HEART / FIGHT IN THIS TEAM —–TRUE CLEVELAND SPIRIT —-YOU GUYS MAKE ME PROUD !!
Amen, Nomad. Pressure is squarely on the Jays now.
Kip gets the lead right back!
WOW—YOU KNOW NAP HAS BEEN STRUGGLING AT THE BAT MOST OF ALL POST SEASON SERIES BUT HE CAN ALSO GET HOT FOR 5-7 GAMES AND CARRY A TEAM —-” PARTY AT NAPS ‘—GO TRIBE —-” AGAINST ALL ODDS –WE ARE ALL IN THE LAND “
Ernie Johnson: “And here’s somebody else” out of the bullpen.
AGREE THE CAVS HAVE BROKEN THE ” DRAUGHT ” BUT MAN IT STILL FEELS LIKE CLEVELAND CATCHES SOME BAD BREAKS ——-KNOW IT IS WRONG TO PLAY ” THE WHAT IF ” GAME —BUT WHAT IF WE HAVE ALL STARTERS HEALTHY PLUS OUR BULL PEN —I WOULD PUT MY MONEY ON PLAYING IN AND POSSIBLY WINNING THE WORLD SERIES —-NOT GIVING UP ON THE TRIBE BUT IT DOES MAKE IT MORE CHALLENGING —-BUT ALSO MORE REWARDING WHEN YOU WIN AKA : SEE THE CAVS DOWN 3 GAMES TO 1 TO RECORD BREAKING DUBS ONLY TO COME BACK AND BEAT THEM—-GO TRIBE… Read more »
Agree on all counts, Nomad. It’s a bummer for sure, but now free of all the baggage of 52 years.
Plus, they’re up 2-0 in the series! And holy crap Napoli just homered for the lead! So they’re only an inning or two away from the Miller / Shaw / Allen relay if they can hold the lead.
I am counting on the Indians winning the WS.
Echoing what Tom said in the podcast about the impact of the Cavaliers winning: The situation with the starters would be devastating, at least for fans, if we were still talking about 1964. But now it’s like: Ok, let’s see what happens.
SO ADD TO THE “SHOT ” THE “FUMBLE ” ” THE ANNOUNCEMENT ” ADD THE “DRONE “—-BAUER DOESN’T EVEN LAST 1 INNING —-THAT IS HUGE
Man…so Bauer is likely done for the duration of this series. Down to two starters…
http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/17678756/lebron-james-stumps-cleveland-cavaliers-sign-jr-smith
“Multiple sources told ESPN that the Cavs have offered a three-year escalating contract to Smith with a partial guarantee in the fourth year, bringing the total guaranteed money north of $42 million”
This was reported by Dave McMenamin on Sept 30, only 4 days after Dave Griffin’s “incredibily competitve and aggressive offer” comment. Klutch failed to get anything substantial beyond initial offer after 3 weeks of holding out. Same with TT last year for even longer period. Yet Klutch legend lives on.
Yeah, I had the numbers backwards. Jr’s cap number this year is almost 16 million and lowers yearly. Final year not fully guaranteed.
Did you guys see they’re going to slightly modify the LeBron banner to add the championship logo to thr back of his jersey on the neck? Pretty cool idea I think
On the Cavs being in chill mode this season: I wonder if LeBron might see a chance to go for another regular-season MVP award. After the Finals, everyone recognized that he was still the man.
Not saying it’s likely, but he might start the season at like 80% or 90% effort, instead of the usual 50% first-half effort, and see how things unfold. Curry isn’t going to win this season coming off two poor Finals performances and getting fewer shots from the addition of Durant.
I think he wins the MVP this year. The voters are never rational. He deserved it his first year in Miami. He deserved it the year before his first win. He’s deserved it 10 out of 13 seasons he’s played. It was the same with Jordan, frankly. This year, I think the voters realize that they put a fork in him too soon and that Curry wasn’t the revolution they thought he was. Someone will have to do something new to take the mantle, and with KD and Curry on the same team, I don’t see either one of them… Read more »
I haven’t even finished the pod yet but wanted to thank you guys for doing another one. There’s some psychology happening now as I associate Tom’s voice with the Cavs championship and the years of reading and watching that lead up to it. I’ve learned a lot from the site over the years and I think that learning has made the success all the more sweet to experience.
I MIGHT HAVE TO PUT THAT IN MY RESUME OR AT LEAST SAVE IT FOR MY TOMBSTONE.
Thanks. Means a lot. Even if I’m not the one with the golden voice. :)
Nate soup counts if Tom crumbles crackers in it

Nate is totally making sense about how great the Cavs were and are.
Tom. Kyrie is great.
Tom, you are way off on JR Smith. He’s easily worth that contract.
I ALSO LOOK AT THE AGES KY/ 24 —–STEPH/ 28—DON’T THINK STEPH WAS DOING WHAT KY IS DOING AT HIS AGE AND BELIEVE BY THE TIME KY BECOMES 28 ( BARRING INJURY —-KNOW I DIDN’T JUST SAY THAT DID I ) KY WILL HAVE ACCOMPLISHED JUST AS MUCH IF NOT MORE THAN STEPH —–WENT AND SAW THE CAVS ” SCRIMMAGE ” 2 WEEEKS AGO ( APPOX . 15,000 FANS THERE ) CLEVELAND IS AN AMAZING PLACE TO BE —FOREVER ” IN THE LAND ” —GO TRIBE
Good call on how the Indians are the whole city’s team right now. That’s awesome. And Jonas>Biyombo and it’s not particularly close.
I was at the game on Friday night – man it was incredible. Being out there as Cody Allen mowed down the top of the 9th had me so pumped up.
I hear you, Tom RE Kyrie v Steph – this year will tell a story on where Kyrie is with his well-discussed flaws. In his favour on this head-2-head is his age. IMHO, I think by the time he reaches Steph’s current age, he will be MVP in his own right.
Considering the Finals, I think Kyrie is just as good as Curry is right now.
My argument is that he is better cause he owned Steph the finals. Tom wants to see it over a whole season.
Your argument is correct. I don’t think you’ll see a whole season like Curry had last year in a long time.
This is getting scary! Cols has agreed with Nate twice in one week. At this rate, he will be out in the mountains hugging trees by opening day.
He’s got a lot of room to grow and Curry was exposed a bit on a number of fronts in the Finals. If teams don’t start getting physical with him and putting him into iso over and over then they learned nothing from the Cavs.
I would love for every single team to take the mindset of Isolating Curry and making him work all season long. He didn’t have to do it at all last year and it was reflected in his record setting numbers. He and the rest of the Warriors complained every time he was being pushed around and they received the lion’s share of protective calls from refs. If teams make it a lot harder on him all year, I don’t know if we will see any difference in his breakdown over the post season. Even though the push for 73 wins… Read more »
