Recap: Cavs 115, Knicks 109 (Or, New York, New Hope)
2011-02-26Overview: The new-look Knicks fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night. The Cavaliers mauled the Knicks on the boards, and J.J. Hickson led the Cavaliers with 24 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks.
I think I like this bullets:
Okay, who thought the Cavs were going to beat the Knicks? And of those people, who thought the Cavs were going to beat the Knicks and shoot 42% from the floor?
It’s tempting to call this game a product of good old-fashioned teamwork and hustle prevailing over an unholy alliance of All-Stars, but it’s hard to reconcile that viewpoint when you consider that Chuck Hayes had nearly twice as many offensive rebounds as the Cavaliers did last night.
The defining factor in this game was that the Knicks have no idea what they’re doing offensively right now. They’ve yet to have a practice together, and they’ve barely gotten any sleep since Carmelo joined the team. Offensively, they were a mess. Their slipped screens got them nothing, they didn’t get consistent dribble penetration or deep position, and they basically swung the ball around the perimeter until Stoudemire or Anthony thought they could go ISO and fire up a mid-range jumper. Stoudemire, Anthony, and Billups got their points, but they had to work very hard to get them, and the supporting cast didn’t give the Knickerbockers anything.
On a Cavaliers note, HICKSOMANIA has returned. 24 hours after a terrible game. Not sure what to make of that. He was up to the challenge of Amare on both ends. He challenged every shot and had some incredible blocks, he crashed the boards, he attacked the paint, and he looked more confident with his left than he has all season. I don’t know how the Hickson experiment will ultimately turn out, but I’m glad he’s on our side. Although that beard has to go.
Razor Ramon was on his game. He took it to the basket every time, and he put a lot of pressure on New York’s defense by pushing the ball. He’s not going to make Steve Nash passes, but he forces the defense to collapse on him in transition and drops the ball off to the guy they’re not watching. That works for me. I honestly worry about Baron coming in when Ramon has been playing like a legit starting point guard.
Jamison was Jamison — 28 points on 25 shots, and a great game on the board. To his credit, he held his own against the Knicks’ bigs, and that does warrant a mention.
Eyenga’s shot selection and Boobie’s shooting slump have become causes for concern. Eyenga is a classic example of the “he’ll be legit next year, but may be hurting the team in his current state” paradox.
AP is legit. You have to think he wishes he was traded, but he’s playing his efficient brand of basketball anyways. Hopefully he keeps this up and gets a contract with a contender next season.
Don’t have much more for tonight. This was a great win. The Knicks had the All-Stars, but the Cavs worked harder and played cleaner, which is a great sign after the defensive and rebounding efforts they had against Houston. The Cavs have now won three of five. Sure, those wins have come against an exhausted Laker team, a Clipper team that sucks on the road, and a very confused Knick team, but THE CAVS HAVE WON THREE OF FIVE. We can build on this. Hopefully Baron won’t mess things up too badly.
I want the Cavs to have the best chance of getting the number one pick, but I also find it hard to root against them. So instead I’m rooting for the other terrible teams (Minnesota, Sacramento, Washington and NJ) to win. Luckily Minnie got a win tonight.
@J – gotta love the excuses, don’t ya?
@Tom
They probably wouldve won…haha
Just remember everyone, the ONLY reason the Knicks lost to the Cavs in Cleveland was because there is this adjustment period. Can’t expect them to beat another NBA team, no matter how inferior when they have to get through growing pains. Knicks were lucky to even be IN the game against the Cavs – imagine if they had played the Heat or something…
OHMIGOD DO I WANT TO SEE CRAZY ANDY WILD MAN FACIAL HAIR!!!!!
Hey guys,
What’s up with this Rip Hamilton failed trade story? Sounds like Gilbert would have been willing to shell out more $$ to get him, buy him out, but then also get a draft pick from Detroit. Unlucky for the Cavs, anyone know details about why Hamilton nixed it?
John, I disagree with your J.J. beard assessment. I know how you feel about Baron, but I say make the beard the new LBJ headband. A show of solidarity. The ’04 Red Sox all over again. Can you imagine Andy showing up for training camp next year with a Baron-style beard? Please, I gotta have something to look forward to here…
Oh, and he still can’t defend a brick….just remember that.
The problem (hopefully) with keeping Ramon around to be a future back-up is a good one. Hopefully, it’s that plenty of other teams out there think he can be their starter and will offer up quite a bit in terms of a trade to get him.
Anthony Parker has been killing it for about the last 10 games.
I think Ramon’s best role is that transition guy off the bench to keep the second team firing on all cylinders. I don’t think anyone would argue Ramon is a top tier guy, but he has a lot of value moving forward in our rotation.
I couldn’t figure out why Alonzo Gee was getting so many minutes last night than I remembered Jamario Moon is gone. Score!
Cavs won last night and the Clippers lost.. I call it the Jamario Moon Effect.
It’s hard to imagine they wont start Baron Davis, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Razor Ramon is, in my opinion, one of the best (if not the best) backup PG in the league. As a starter you can think of 10 guys that are definitely better, but I can’t think of one backup that is better unless you consider Felton/Lawson. Sessions is still going to get big minutes. I think Byron Scott and management understand the big picture right now – as evidenced by the trade for a draft pick. they are trying to find the right… Read more »
Happy for this win…especially against the Knicks who according to some are all of a sudden contenders even though they’re not in the top 5 in the East…still…guarantee the Knicks lose in the first round….their three best guys had great games last night and they still lost to the worst team in the league…its one thing to have offense but not playing defense is gonna destroy that team…
Sessions is wearing me down with some decent play, but I still am not sold that he is starting PG on contending team. He just can’t seem to get it through his head that he has to go OVER the screen. I don’t understand the big mystery. He still has a tendency to turn it over at the worst time in inexplicable fashion, but I would be remiss if I didn’t notice how much better his pace is now and his improved confidence on his J. He still can’t really create in crunch time which is what I will love… Read more »
Great win by the Cavs. 62 rebounds as a team is no fluke. The Knicks have two certified graduates of the Blue Bayou School of Defense in Stoudemire and ‘Melo, and Sessions exploited this by driving right through them. Hickson put out a great effort and got rewarded. Jamison got more than one point per shot attempt, so his offense was relatively efficient.
As for Baron… why not put him and Sessions on the floor simultaneously? Baron does love to shoot, so have him play the 2 in that alignment. Just a thought.
Go Cavs!
John you hit my biggest fear for this team on the head in this post… I’m terrified that the Cavs will temporarily forget the big picture and use Davis too much. Sessions will never be Steve Nash or CP3, but he is 24 and able to run this offense. If he puts up 15 or 20 points per night and works on his passing a bit more he will be better than half the starting points in the league.
That being said, so far I think Davis and the Cavs have handled the trade well.
I agree, Joey, that was a fun game to watch. I didn’t even think of how much the Cavs suck when watching that game. It was just downright entertaining.
Great win for the Cavs! The Cavs outrebounded the Knicks by 20 rebounds and that was the winning factor. It really looked like the Cavs wanted to win the game and not get push around. As for Davis taking some of Ramon’s minutes, I don’t think it will happen. Coach Scott said Ramon is still the starter and he’ll try to make Davis work around that. I think Harris, Gee and Boobie are gonna see are gonna see a drop in minutes, but not Ramon(or nearly as many). I was at the Q and the one interesting thing was the… Read more »
