Live Thread: Cavs @ Mavs, 1/30/2017
2017-01-30(That’s Ember Moon, nee Athena, who is not only the dopest human alive, but also from Dallas. There’s always context in these videos of mine, except for when there isn’t.)
Alrighty folks, quick little one-game sojurn for the Cavaliers as they go to Dallas before their date with the Timberwolves back at the Q Wednesday night. Kevin Love didn’t travel with the team due to back problems (hopefully those get better soon), but in somewhat of an unexpected twist, Ty Lue told ESPN.com’s Dave McMenamin that both Kyrie Irving and LeBron James will play tonight.
After a no-good, very bad start to the season, the Mavericks are starting to pull things together — they’re 6-4 in their last 10 games, and woke up this morning just 4.5 games back of the 8th spot in the Western Conference. (Of course, they’re only two games ahead of the Lakers, who are currently dead-last in the West. This is kinda why nobody is willing to give the Cavaliers a point guard for free right now — not many teams have given up on the season altogether yet.) Former Warrior #4 option Harrison Barnes is currently leading the Mavericks with 20.4 points per game on 47.3% shooting, and the team plays a grind-it-out pace — they’re dead-last in the league at 96.9 points per game, but hold opponents to just 100.1 points per game, good for 4th in the league.
Here’s what I’m looking for tonight:
— LeBron is starting to get more aggressive in terms of doing his work before the catch and getting easy baskets on deep-post touches or off-ball cuts — more of that, please.
— Kyrie is not only making everything that leaves his hand, but his passing is starting to get back to its pre-hamstring injury levels — more of that, please.
— The OKC game was a MASSIVE step forward for the Cavs in terms of stopping dribble penetration — I don’t care if this team scores less than any other team in the league, more good defense would make me very happy.
— Settle down and wait for those open 3s to come to you, Kyle Korver. You don’t need to quick-trigger these contortionist looks off of down-screens to make an impact. Look at Shump — the looks will come if you read the penetration from the primary ballhandlers and stay patient.
— Alright, Kay Felder. My adopted son, my Oakland Jesus, my Sun and Stars. My wish has come true and you’re the point guard of the second unit now. Please stop making this a Monkey’s Paw thing for me. You led all of college basketball in assists last year, and showed great playmaking instincts early this season — let’s try to get back to passing tonight.
— Tristan and LeBron, you make your free throws. YOU MAKE YOUR FREE THROWS. Also, how about 3 turnovers or less tonight, LeBron? You know, just for the fun of it?
— Shump, keep not missing 3s. It’s really a helpful thing when you make over half of your 3s.
Alright campers, I’ll be back later tonight with the recap — you night owls will probably be the only ones to catch it when it gets up, but the rest of you will have it with your morning coffee.
Once again, the opposing point guard has his personal season best (AND CAREER BEST) against the Cavs.
Not to mention he stole Kyrie’s pic-a-nic basket and ate his lunch…
LBJ seems chill in the post game…
I guess Kyrie didn’t catch the stat after yesterday’s game that the Cavs are 16-0 when he dishes out at least 10 dimes…
In other news, the DION WAITERS led Heat won their 8th in a row. I’m going into a self induced coma for the rest of 2017.
St. Weirdo for MVP…
Good for him, Man. I always hoped he’d figure it out.
He’s been saving my C:tB Fantasy team lately…
Joe Vardon: “Ty, it’s the end of January. You mentioned you were going to cut LeBron’s minutes down…”
Ty Lue: “He played 37 minutes. That’s a cut down.”
Wow…
WTF? I think they ALL need a frickin vacation.
I don’t think Ty bowls tho…
Had to play him 37 minutes to secure the win vs the Mavs….this stuff is obvious, guys…
This seemed like the perfect back to back scenario to give LBJ a night off TBH…
That remark is a clear sign of genius…

Tomorrow is January 31st. I believe the stated goal was to ramp down LBJ’s minutes in January to around 31 per game. Tonight he played 37, and it would’ve been more had they not been blown out early. This is a failure, particularly because his high minutes are effective. He is clearly lacking energy and strength. Organizational failure.
I wonder if Ty’s got anything left in the tank at PG? I mean… he’s younger than Andre Miller…
+1. Despite what the ‘minutes police’ police want to think, it’s clearly affecting him. Just hope it doesn’t lead to some stupid injury.
TT was a black hole tonight weirdly… zero points and -22… such a contrast from the Thunder game…
They ran one or two pick and rolls with him, it went well, then they never got back to it.
Well this is depressing as hell. Mike Dunleavy versus Kyle Korver post trade.

Still too early to judge, but certainly not encouraging…
Count me in the group that failed to see the point of trading for the same player we already had but losing a pick in the process.
Cavs should fire their D-League scouts since they missed on Yogi…
They are not…
Absolutely given how much we need one. It looks like Yogi has been playing with that team all year, and not two games. Hope I am wrong, but it looks like it might take Korver two years.
He is a free agent at the conclusion of this year. :)
Cavs… single-handedly helping to decide the 8th playoff spot in the Western Conference…
james freaking jones…

Best,

Goodnight.
Mags beat spurs and Cavs. Ack to back
Ack is right…
So why are the Cavs playing James Jones NOW!? I don’t understand switching the rotations on a back-to back with no practice.
Because he’s the Champ…
EG, be sure to lock down some of those URLs! :)
I’m all over it…
:)
Another embarrassing performance by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Way to make us proud. Getting showed up by a guy who signed a ten day contract TODAY.
The revenabt looks awful. I can’t believe people paid money to see that.
One of the most gorgeous movies I’ve ever seen.
Of course.
You know we usually have remarkably similar tastes.
I’m not even joking.
Not a Leo fan?
Whelp. This sucks. But remember. It’s meaningless. It has nothing to do with how they play come May.
Yogi just drove right past Shump…
They should’ve just rested Kyrie and LeBron
Kyrie just settling for that J too much. Gotta get it off the dribble or the play.
Wow. Frye got hammered after the rebound.
Kyrie actually played some good D that time on Matthews… then passed up a layup for a turnover pass to no one…
KYRIE! You have to go up there.
Well, it’s now or never.
Game over! Good night guys!
We stink tonight.
Thanks for being honest… it’s refreshing

Best,
EG
I don’t understand this defense. Why are you trapping powell in the corner?
I don’t see anything resembling urgency on the part of the Cavs unfortunately…
Maybe the Mavs will trade us Yogi…
For Korver?
I guess you could call him Boo Boo so far… sure
LeBron is gassed again.
So half your $20 is mine. But I’ll let you keep it because I like this website.
So let me get this straight on that last possession… NOBODY bothered to get within 10 feet of Matthews… and they still couldn’t get the rebound?
Even I admit the Cavs look disjointed. It’s a meaningless game though.
This game is over if Cavs can’t get a stop or two…
Dear Ty,

Sincerely,

Where are those pindowns for Korver? The Cavs aren’t even running plays.
Sigh. We miss JR
Nate. EG still owes me a sixer.
I don’t remember that…
Chase down blocks.
Oh right… well, someday
JUST SHOOT IT LEBRON!
Wow… Matthews traveled TWICE on that play…
That was an amazing and angry bullet pass from LBJ… glad Frye caught it and swished it…
