Recap: Cavs 111, Knicks 104 (Or, Leads Are For Blowing)
2017-02-05We all know what a lead is. It’s the result of playing better than another team for a prolonged period of time and showing some form of dominance. The Cavs do that often. Tonight was no different. Although they started the night out slowly giving up points in transition, missing open 3s, and allowing the Knicks to block four shots, they ended up ahead by 27 with 2:35 left to go in the third.
The remainder of the game turned out to be a lesson in what leads are for, as the Knicks somehow managed to get within five points with just one minute to go. If you know the final result of the game, or simply read the lead, you know what leads are for with this Wine & Gold team: They’re for blowing. They are also for fans to get their hopes up that their aging super star, the King, may play less than 37.5 minutes. This lead did not deliver on that hope.
LeBron James played 39 minutes on his way to 32 points on just 20 shots. He went 4-8 from 3-land, had five rebounds, and ten assists. Much of the reason he had to play so many minutes was New York’s Brandon Jennings. Jennings scored 23 points and had ten assists. However, 17 of his points came in the last two minutes of the third and first two minutes of the fourth as he went 6-6 from the floor (5-5 from 3).
Kevin Love contributed 23 points and 16 boards, which easily countered Carmelo Anthony‘s 17 points and six boards. The Cavs are not in a rush to trade Love for Melo if they are thinking rationally.
First Quarter
The Cavs started DeAndre Liggins, Iman Shumpert, Tristan Thompson, James, and Love. Liggins started the night out fouling Kristaps Porzingis to give the Knicks a point. The Cavs responded with a Love corner 3-pointer courtesy of a LeBron laser pass (one of his six assists in the quarter). The Knicks then grinded for a bit to get some momentum. Joakim Noah had two tip-ins in a row, and they ran the ball in transition after every time they got a block. They also scored some transition points after the King argued a no call layup, and when no one got back after Love missed a 3-pointer and Jennings rocketed the ball down court to Kyle O’Quinn for a dunk.
Fortunately for Cleveland, LeBron was on. He hit two 3s. Love was also helpful putting up 10 points. The Knicks held a lead much of the quarter, but they were outscored 12-5 the final four minutes. They couldn’t deter any penetration as Kristaps was on the bench with his second foul. Kay Felder was really effective during this run. He seemed to get into the paint at will and dished out two dimes for 3s. The Cavs finished the quarter up 34-25 and nine of their 13 buckets were assisted on.
Second Quarter
Carmelo started the quarter out burning Richard Jefferson in the post with a spin move that resulted in a 3-point play. Felder wasn’t scared though and came off a rub off screen with the King to drain a mid-range jumper. The next offensive possession, the King drove in semi-transition, did a spin, and found Kyle Korver in the corner. Korver then tossed the ball to Channing Frye who canned a 3-ball.

Felder added to the momentum a few plays later when he stole an inbounds pass and got a layup.
The King played calculated. He had 11 points on 3-3 shooting and hit his only 3-pointer, but more importantly, when Kristaps checked back into the game, he made sure to target him. The very first possession the Knicks switched the Zinger onto James, the King drove it hard to draw a foul. That 3rd foul sent Porzingis to the bench with 7:50 left in the quarter. For some reason the Knicks then kept letting Courtney Lee cover him. The King rose up over him for a three, pulled for a mid-range jumper when he gave him six feet of space, and spun for a dunk when he got deep post position on him.
Love had the play of the game towards the end of the second. With 2:50 to go, Willy Hernangomez ended up on Love. Love drove by him and missed a layup, which TT slammed home. A few possessions later Love drove by him again and made art, a white guy on white guy postering. He just put it on the floor, shoved free with his off-hand, and crammed it.

The Cavs ended the quarter with a 19 point lead, as the Knicks couldn’t put anything together. Melo went 1-5 for just six points.
Third Quarter
LeBron started out the quarter taking two awful jumpers after the Knicks kept switching larger guys onto him after pick and rolls. The team also forgot to play defense and kept giving up open jumpers because of poor rotations. After Courtney Lee knocked down an open 3-pointer, Tyronn Lue finally called a time out with 10:17 to go.
Things didn’t improve instantly on the offensive end, but defensively the Cavs clicked allowing just seven points in the next nine minutes. Offensively, things built. Love and Liggins drew fouls. Then Love back cut the Zinger, missed, and TT got the put back slam. LBJ then pushed it in transition after a miss for a bucket. The pinnacle of the quarter came at the 5:11 mark. The Cavs had a possession where all five guys touched the ball before Shump finished with a 3-pointer from the corner. They then caused a 24-second violation the next play while ahead,81-57.
The quarter didn’t end on a bright note; the Knicks went on an 11-0 run . The Jefferson, Felder, Frye, Love, Korver, Thompson lineup couldn’t hang. Felder was incapable of covering Jennings. With a minute left, Jennings made a 3-pointer and then stole the ball from Felder for a layup. Jennings finished the quarter breaking open for a quick 3 to bring the Knicks a tiny bit closer, 84-68.
Fourth Quarter
The Knicks outscored the Cavs 36-27 in the final frame. Jennings continued his onslaught hitting three 3-pointers and handing out an assist during a 13-7 run all while being covered by Felder. His final deep shot prompted Lue to call a timeout with 9:53 left and the Knicks down by just 11 to get the little liability off the floor.
Since the Cavs were unable to play defense, LeBron had to take over. He was 4-7 for nine points and gave out three assists, but every single play ran through him.
With the Cavs up nine and just 3:39 to go, the King had several chances to put the game completely out of reach. He settled for mid-range jumpers though, which didn’t fall. The Knicks then lucked into a 24 second violation (which was blatantly a wrong call), an 8 second violation, and a Carmelo steal and dunk, which brought the Knicks within five with a minute left.
Fortunately, the King was able to make a decisive move after Melo’s dunk. He came chugging up the floor and used a TT screen. Melo just switched and Hernangomez was left to face LeBron with eight feet of built up speed. The Zinger had to help and LeBron zoomed a pass to an open Love in the corner. Love drained the 3-pointer to put the game out of reach.
This LeBron pass to a wide-open K. Love to ice the game was just disgusting. pic.twitter.com/rr6x53WbGC

Now up eight, LeBron dunked it a play later just dribbling down the center of the floor to show that despite blowing a 27 point lead he wasn’t fazed at all during this win.
Gripes
1.Again, the Cavs struggled to stop a team in transition. In the first quarter, the Knicks scored on at least four possessions that came in semi-transition situations. It kept the Cavs from blowing the game open, considering they held the Knicks to 44% shooting while hitting six threes of their own. Cleveland needs to learn how to stop the ball anytime they head to the defensive end.
2.The defense towards the end of the third and during the fourth was awful. Cleveland was switching haphazardly, which led to a lot of drive and drop the ball off situations. The Knicks were 7-12 at the rim in the 4th.
3.And Felder, who actually looked decent in the first quarter getting two assists and driving into the paint, was completely horrible. He gave up 17 points to Jennings in less than five minutes and was a Cavs worst -7.
4. Richard Jefferson was virtually useless this game. He got burned by Melo multiple times and had to foul him to stop him, and he even got a travel called on himself. He just looked slow all night.
5. TT was -7 in the plus-minus department tonight despite going 6-8 from the floor, and seemed like he struggled to cover Hernangomez, who put up 16 points on 7-10 shooting. Hernangomez is a crafty player, and he knows how to bang down low. He took it at TT and Love several times getting reasonable looks using his footwork. While I’m not sure he will ever be a ball handler like some people say, he could pair well with Porzingis as the Zinger learns to shoot more consistently from outside the paint.
6.The King won the Cavs this game and was wonderful; however, I have to bring up the fact that his method of attacking mismatches makes no sense. He keeps taking jumpers whenever a bigger guy switches onto him. He needs to just drive the ball. He wasted so many chances to tonight. The Knicks were switching nearly every pick and roll.
Hypes
1.Even though the Cavs had lapses on defense, they still held the Knicks to 44.8% shooting and limited them to 12 made 3s, five of which were from a red hot Brandon Jennings.
2.The Cavs went 16-40 from deep and were generating beautiful looks all night. This was because LeBron made it a priority to attack and dish the ball whenever possible. That’s how he got his ten assists. Channing Frye was the biggest beneficiary of this as he went 4-8 from deep, but all eight of shots were totally open. He had 14 points. 20 of Cleveland’s 41 makes were assisted on.
3. Kyle Korver looked really spry tonight. He dove on the floor several times and was working to get open. He only went 2-5 from deep, but he’s finding open shots now. And, he’s contributing on the defensive end by not losing his man.
4.Iman Shumpert didn’t stand out in the recap, but he was +13 and was competent when he was on the floor. He also grabbed nine boards.
5.Kevin Love was really aggressive getting his points tonight. He went at Melo and Hernangomez on his way to 23 points and was 4-7 from deep. He looked better than Melo, who got booed by his hometown fans. The most impressive part of his game was the fact that he got 16 boards.
6.This wasn’t the prettiest win, but the Cavs needed to experience this. At some point, LeBron and friends are going to figure out how to protect a lead. They are going to desire some nights where they get the fourth quarter off, so they aren’t as banged up. The Cavs are in Washington tomorrow night.
AGREED !
Wall calling tonight’s game the biggest regular season game of his career. Hoping the Cavs can match their energy. Thinking this will be another Cavalier wake up call though.
That’s a sad commentary on John Wall if this is the biggest regular season game of his career…
Haha. John Wall calling a February game the biggest game of his career. What a joke. Even if they win 100-10, the Cavs would still easily sweep them in the playoffs.
Regular season.
Cavs will get throttled but it still won’t matter. John Wall is not taking his team beyond round 2

Cavs win easily despite missing their starting backcourt to injuries.
Against a lottery team missing their starting PG, but sure, solid couple of wins… this week will be tougher. Cavs will need to be locked in tonight to beat hot Wiz team on their court… I think they’ll do it, but it will be challenging…
A lot of the criticism of Lue is second guessing. When Shrimp was playing good in the first half, Lue was a genius for playing him. When his man got hot in the second half, Lue was in idiot for playing him. I agree with TOJ (and have been saying all along) that they need a lot more minutes from Liggins. He should start, so his high energy D can help make up for KI and KL, and when LeBron doesn’t feel like playing. Most of all, Liggins needs run to develop into a bit more of an offensive threat.… Read more »
Hardly second guessing… this is the same guy who left Korver in for 21 straight minutes against the Kings too… He had plenty of time to yank Felder… Jennings scored like 17 straight points…
You are over reacting. That would be a good point if it happened in the playoffs. But at this time of year, developing players (Shrimp, Liggins) and integrating them into the system (Korver) is at least as important as winning games. Korver has started fitting in pretty well the last couple of games.
Fail to see how it’s an overreaction… odd rotations have been a pattern with Ty Lue since he took the job… You can’t talk about “developing players” when he has no apparent rhyme or reason for when and how much he decides to play these young guys… Liggins also did a great job early, but where was he? Kay has obvious limitations and Ty left him out there to get exposed at the cost of not only a lead but also additional minutes for his superstar (who he has falsely claimed he was going to start trimming back minutes for… Read more »
Winning titles has also been a pattern with Ty Lue since he took the job.
That’s title singular (so far) and more credit goes to your pal LBJ than anyone for that…
Wonder what you’d be saying about Lue if Bray wasn’t a 12 year old moron, and if the Dubs win in 5 games last year…
The Cavs crushed them the last 3 games. With or with Bray that’s a Cavs win. Only frontrunning fraud fans (alliteration!) think they were the better team.
A pattern?
“Developing players” doesn’t mean letting someone get torched incessantly like Felder by one player. That’s is simply coaching masochism, and can even negatively affect a player’s pysche. Same thing with the example of riding Korver 21 minutes. And Lue’s answer for not putting Shump back in vs the Kings wasn’t to assist Korver fitting in as you suggest. Lue directly said it wouldn’t have been “fair” in his words to put Shump in since he sat so long. What? Most second unit rotation players sit for long stretches. Lue’s coaching has not been exemplary, that’s for sure, in many of… Read more »
3-1 blown lead might have to be retired after that…
Brutal.
I’m not even watching the Superbowl (I almost never do), but I just saw the score….hope Billy Simmons is enjoying the game.

EVIL I APPRECIATE THE REASSURANCE ( OLDER PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF WORRY ABOUT EVEYTHING) — HELL WHEN YOU GET MY AGE YOU WORRY IF YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE IT TO THE BATHROOM IN TIME
No problem NOMAD. This is typically the time of year when other teams get hyped up by the national media since they’re looking for any chink in the armor of teams like the Cavs, Dubs and Spurs… It just makes for good ratings to be able to showcase other squads on the rise… especially those with history like the Celtics… The key is to not get too wrapped up in it, and just trust that the Cavs will be fine…
WHAT IS CONCERNING IS THE CELTS HAVE ENOUGH ( TRADE CARDS ) TO PULL OFF A MAJOR TRADE AND AQUIRE A PLAYER THAT WILL HELP THEM GET PAST THE CAVS —WE ARE WAITING ON ” TRYOUTS AND WAIVER RENTALS—BUYOUTS “—-IF DANNY THINKS HE CAN MOVE PAST THE CAVS HE WILL MAKE THAT MAJOR TRADE
Who, exactly do you think they could get though? Sacto is not trading Boogie. Millsap isn’t that scary given Cavs domination of him and Horford in Atlanta. Who would be a scary get? Honestly, I think you have to remember that the Cavs have already made their big moves to put a championship team together. Danny Ainge has had these trade chips for years now… years… and he has yet to pull anything off…
I don’t think they do anything before this summer. Who knows, maybe they’ll even try for Boogie at that point. As you say, there is not a lot out there that they can realistically get.
I just don’t think the Kings want to let Boogie go, and the truth is that they can pay him like $50M more than any other team this summer… The guy I could see them potentially trading for is Gordon Hayward, since he used to play for Brad Stevens at Butler, and he has one year left on his deal before he’ll be likely priced out of Utah’s budget…
They clearly don’t want Melo either… if they were smart, they’d be making calls about Paul George…
The one guy I could see them going for prior to the deadline is Jimmy Butler, but that seems improbable to me. I could see the Bulls trading him, not sure how much Ainge wants him. Also, could see the Celtics going for Taj Gibson in a non blockbuster trade. I think that would make them better.
Sacto has a tough choice to make. Pay 200 mils to Cousins who didn’t help them to playoffs single season or trade him for younger prospects and rebuild.
They’ve given every indication that they will keep him and not trade him… show me a link that says different…
My comment was more out of my own thinking, thinking loud. But, that said, there were conversations between sacramento and Suns about trading Cousins according to ESPN.
http://www.espn.com/blog/nba/rumors/post/_/id/40892/nba-rumor-central-kings-suns-discussing-demarcus-cousins-trade
Sounds more like there were rumors of conversations, and all coming from the Phoenix end of things… Kings would be remarkably stupid to get only Len, Warren and a pick back…
Have no idea what Kings would do. But, I think Kings should move in different direction. Cousins is perhaps best big in the NBA but his immaturity is hurting kings. His constant pouting and not getting back on defense while upset with calls etc.. Cousins as best player can’t lead a team and he needs to be in win now team rather than projects. So, kings will do better if they trade Cousins. They did the mistake not trading Rudy Gay when he started hot. Fit may be an issue as you pointed before but otherwise he will do well… Read more »
Cousins is an LBJ style player in a Center’s body… he’s not going to be as effective without the ball in his hands, so is not as good of a fit for Cavs. Sure, the Kings should probably trade Boogie for the king’s ransom they could get for him… but they haven’t yet, and they’ve been saying repeatedly this year that they don’t intend to. You may not think he can’t lead a team as the best player, but Cousins probably believes he can (much like Dwight Howard and Carmelo believed they could as well). You’re right that he’s often… Read more »
I think Lebron has the ability to adjust like be effective as off the ball player, tone down his game like the great players do, player fewer minutes too. KD needed ball in hand in OKC and now adjusted well with warriors to be play more off the ball and having best season of his career. Lebron is even more versatile than Durant, think he will do well no matter what teammates he plays with. That said, may be a risk move for Cavs from chemistry point of view.
I don’t think you watch this team enough if you think LeBron wants to play off the ball all that much and adjust his game to that degree…
I know Lebron wants to get to 6 rings. He played off the ball with Miami because he had that talent around him. I think it is matter of confidence on his teammates. He will adjust if he is given all NBA center, IMO. It is also true I don’t watch Lebron as much as you.
Of course he wants more rings, but he’s won the three that he has without an all NBA Center… In fact, the best Center he ever played with (Big Z) was not able to help him win a ring… And of course, LBJ will play off ball when he has to, but it’s not his preference. We’ve all written a lot about how devastating an off-ball player Bron could be if he decided to do that. But it’s been apparent that he sees himself more as the facilitator of this offense and loves to get his guys going. Just watching… Read more »
Compensating for this would take a complete restructuring for the Cavs and is the opposite of “Win-Now” as that team would likely take another two more years (The last of what’s left of LeBron’s peak) just to get to the point where we are right now when healthy and engaged. Even then, there is no guarantee we are as good.
EG, Future HOFer Bosh played more C for Miami. Cousins can play that role. But you add Kyrie to the equation, it becomes more clear about bad fit.
They may have played him some there, but they still had Joel Anthony, Z (for one season) and Birdman to man the middle since Bosh was much more of a finesse big (like Kevin Love) who could space the floor and play more like a PF. Bosh was 6’11 but weighed in at 235 most years while Boogie is 6’11 and listed at 270 (probably bigger). Point is, while Boogie does have range to the three point line… he’s much more apt to put the ball on the floor and drive to the hole (a la LBJ). That’s why Love… Read more »

I THINK WE COULD GO 1-2—–O.K. YOU GOT ME EVIL — DID NOT LOOK AT CELTS SCHEDULE/ JUST GOING ON HOW THEY ARE PLAYING OF LATE —MY BAD ….STILL A LITTLE CONCERNING
I think the Cavs will be ready for the Wiz on Monday, and I could see them dropping either the game at Indy or OKC but I don’t think they’ll lose both…
The Celtics have been playing better, but it’s important to realize that six of their seven games on the current win streak have been at home… and the two impressive ones were against the Rockets and Raps…
All Horford does is jack threes these days…
BY THE END OF THE WEEK THE CELTS COULD BE ATOP THE EASTERN CONFERENCE—JUST SAYING ….ARE WE STILL THE ELITE TEAM ( WITH ALL BODIES HEALTHY AND HOPEFULLY A BACK UP PT GD/ AND A BIG ) TO BEAT ANY OTHER TEAM ON THEIR HOME CT —BEST OF 7 SEREIES ?
You really think the Cavs will go 0-3 this week NOMAD? And that the Celtics will go 3-0 the first three games of their Western trip to Sacto, Portland and Utah?
We miss you Swish!

Clips are so bad right now…
There’s nothing worse than listening to Hubie Brown lavish praise on the Celtics… and man, the Clips are not good without CP3…
Ty Lue has sounded a bit annoyed/arrogant in his post game pressers of late, and last night he was very curt. It’s clear he dislikes Joe Vardon’s questions, and I haven’t been a big fan of Vardon either. Joe does seem like the only reporter, however, willing to push Lue on his substitution decisions and the minutes LeBron is playing. Ty needs to take some chill pills, but more importantly, give an honest assessment to his crazy substituion patterns. And it’s still mystifying we haven’t signed a pt guard to a 10-day contract…..and someone bigger than 5’9″. EG, Curry’s half-smile/smirk… Read more »
Lue is a great coach. Currently popovich and Carlisle are the only better ones and Lue is better than them in the playoffs.
You don’t get to be called a great coach after one year dude… He’s a good young coach who still has a lot to learn…
Vardon does seem to rankle Ty… but his questions aren’t wrong. He’s still a young coach who is learning and would do well not to emulate Blatt’s mistake of arrogant response to a clear issue…
Also… this happened last night…

Haha, What a fraud. Least likeable team of my lifetime.
The kobe/shaq lakers were pretty unlikeable during the era of shaq gets away with offensive fouls every time on every possession and Kobe gets away with rape by paying a massively huge undisclosed settlement.
I didn’t see it live, but it’s almost unbelievable he missed that. He’s been almost literally automatic on plays just like that the last three years…
The whole fourth quarter and OT was like a competition to see which team could make the worst mistake… Kings did a great job of defending KD and making Curry and Klay beat them…
So am I the only person that noticed that this should have been a 5 second call? What the heck?
Lue deserves some blame for the dwindling of the lead… There is absolutely no excuse to leave a 5’9 rookie on a guy who is catching fire from the perimeter… Especially when you have not one, but two defensive wings you could easily bring back into the game. If Ty puts either Shump or Lig back in for the last two minutes of the third, the lead likely stays 20+ and there’s at least a decent chance LBJ gets to cool his heels on the bench for the duration of the fourth… Certainly could have been a better outcome usage… Read more »
I wonder if Lue was trying to teach Felder a lesson.
I’m not sure what the lesson is though? Kay looked like the worst version of the old flypaper Kyrie days, sticking to literally every screen in that time span…
Were the Cavs up by 27 when he put him in? My thought was that if you cannot count on a guy to protect a 27 pt lead against a non-playoff team for like seven minutes, that begs the question of whether he belongs on this team at this time. Hopefully, Felder will watch the tape repeatedly and do what he can to improve.
It is also possible that Lue wanted to show management a hole in the team that needs to be filled.
They were up 24, but it was pretty obvious with the run Jennings had at the end of the third that Ty should have subbed in Shump or Lig for him to start the fourth… He was actually a lot better in the first to second quarter bridge and made some things happen, but it was clear that the Knicks were picking on him later in the game…
Lue doesn’t need to show management a hole that needs to be filled… they’re already well aware…
Thanks for the recap. I’m worried that LBJ’s minutes load is going to take its toll and show up at the worst time.
They better bring a better game to Washington. The Wizards are starting to find themselves.
AGREE KSHRIMP IS TO BLAME WITH THE “OLE ” DEFENSE BUT DON’T EXCUSE TY—-SHOULD HAVE SUBSTITUTED SOONER ——-IF TRANSITION DEFENSE IS NOT A TOP PRIORITY COME MON AGAINST THE WIZ —-WALL WILL GET 50 AND CAVS WILL BE BLOWN OUT –( THINK THE WIZ WIN ANYWAYS –UNBEATABLE AT HOME AND WILL BE ” JACKED ” UP TO SEND A MESSAGE TO THE CAVS )—-WOULD SETTLE FOR 3-1 ON ROAD TRIP–BUT SEE US GOING 2-2 WITH A LOSS IN INDIANA OR OKC ….AND THE CELTS “BREATHING DOWN OUR BACKS ” FOR THE TOP SPOT —–DON’T BE SURPRISED IF THE CELTS MAKE… Read more »
I’m not too confident about the Wiz game….we’ll see what Cavs team shows up, but I’m afraid they’re going to get run out of the arena. Wonder if Lue will ever have Felder on Wall….that would be amusing…
Does it matter if the first two games are in Boston when the Cavs win four straight?
Lets see what Monday brings. Hopefully a bit more Liggins – dunno why he is in the doghouse in the 2H especially watchin Jennings throw a lit match in to the dumpster that is Kay Felder
OK recap. Fair to pick out Felder’s issues at the close of the 3rd/start of the 4th. Should pick out James for the same issues late (silly Js, 2 horrid lazy TOs, Melo PP & slam off him, etc). I’ve watched a lot of hoops for a long time. Pre-Magic & Larry Legend. I can say that along with Shaq & Kobe, he’s the most frustrating great player I’ve ever seen. Though I’m sure there were some, I can’t ever remember watching the other all-timers I’ve seen play (Dr. J, Kareem, Moses Malone, Magic, Bird, MJ, Duncan, or even Wade)… Read more »
Thanks for the recap David. I thought it was a great game for a few reasons: Winning without a big-3 member, Love looking healthy all night, and Shump continuing to impress as a guard we need to lean heavily on these days. I agree about transition D but I do believe that’s probably the highest effort and highest energy-expenditure play in basketball- not super surprising that we are lagging on that front in January. We need to keep LeBron’s minutes down but it seems like Lue is “addicted” to him- “oh man I need to chill out on this stuff…… Read more »
Sorry it took so long to get there. You were the last one (thoughEG is still waiting on his).
