Point Four-ward: Taking Out the “Trash”
2017-02-08The Cavs battled for a gritty offensive win (oxymoron?) by overcoming the Wizards in DC in overtime with LeBron on the bench after fouling out early in the extra session. With all four healthy starters (Iman Shumpert left with an ankle sprain, of course) logging 40+ minutes in the game, the Cavs matched the intensity that the Wizards wanted. As John Wall stated that this game was the “biggest regular season game in his career”, the remainder of the healthy Cavs players thwarted his mission to win with timely defense and spectacular offense.
Quietly, the Cavs have won five out of the last six and while there is a bunch of “outside noise”, the Cavs are focused on improving and getting through the lulls of the regular season. Regarding the reports of a Melo-Love trade, here’s what James had to say…

1. The Cavs won despite some circumstances against them in DC
The Wizards circled this game and made it a mission of theirs to win, which was obvious from John Wall’s sentiment with respect to a game in early February. In addition to some interesting calls by Tony Brothers and company, the Cavs also had to deal with a strange technical foul when an official believed that a profanity laced exchange between Coach Lue and Tristan Thompson (on the floor at the time) was directed at him. The Cavs also lost Iman Shumpert to friendly fire, when he stepped on Kevin Love‘s foot. Shumpert left the game and did not return, logging just 24 minutes in this one.
Finally, despite an amazing shot by LeBron to force overtime, James, who entered the period with five fouls already, committed his sixth in the first 90 seconds, forcing Kyrie and Kevin to step up in his place. While this game was an entertaining affair (covered here by John Krolik), the Cavs still managed to give up 135 points…..

2. Carmelo trade rumors won’t die down
Despite reports of the Kevin Love for Carmelo Anthony trades continuing to dominate the news circuit, Kevin Love has been outstanding in the last couple of games coming back from injury. Posting double-doubles in his last two games, Love has gone 23-16 against the Knicks and 39-12 against the Wizards. It is somewhat hilarious that the reporter whom LeBron referred to as “trash” has predicted Kevin Love to be shipped out for the past three seasons, only to be wrong time and time again.

That being said, the media machine gets all revved up and analysts/pundits debate if a move should be made or not. I wouldn’t do the deal at all. Even Frank Isola, the author of the article causing the stir, said he wouldn’t do the deal if he were the Cavs. However, it’s almost as if there is not enough going on during this time of the year and the pot has be stirred.
3. Iman Shumpert absence will hurt
As Iman Shumpert left the game last night, many probably wondered what will the Cavs do going forward. With JR Smith already out until at least April, not only are the Cavs down a playmaker, but now also have a depth chart crunch at the wing spot.
In the 13 starts Shumpert has had this season, he’s shot 45.5% from three point range, a vast improvement over his 37.0% as a bench player. In addition, his scoring averages went from 7.0 ppg as a reserve to 10.1 as a starter. The looks Shumpert got on offense in the starting rotation were definitely better, hence leading to better percentages, but Shump deserves credit too. With Iman likely missing some time (hopefully minimal), Ty Lue will likely have to juggle the minutes of Kyle Korver, Jordan McRae and DeAndre Liggins to fill the role.

4. Cavs will need to make a move
After the Cavs had a “mega-workout” with four solid veterans, it was widely reported that Jordan Farmar and not Mario Chalmers, Lance Stephenson or Kirk Hinrich would be signed. However, with the injury to Shumpert and lack of bodies starting to really rack up, the Cavs have to be anxious to get to All-Star Weekend. Hoping to come back refreshed and recharged from the mid-season break, the Cavs will more than likely have a couple of new faces in the coming weeks, whether it be a buyout candidate (Andrew Bogut, Jose Calderon, Deron Williams) or Farmar, it won’t be Lance Stephenson, who signed a 10 day contract with the Timberwolves.
With arguably their best perimeter defender (outside of an engaged LeBron) out, Stephenson would have worked well. Despite his alleged beef with LeBron, almost anybody with NBA experience may help this squad, as currently there are only 11-12 healthy bodies on any given night and Lance would have best fit the “Shumpert” role.
Regardless, the Cavs will more than likely make a move, sooner rather than later, to help keep the minutes down for their guys. That’s more important now than ever, with LeBron’s age, Kevin’s back issues, and Kyrie’s leg ailments. While none of these seem serious long term, keeping the minutes down over the course of the rest of the season should help in the long run.
Thanks for your hard work putting this together. I know I have heard this same “fiction” for years now. I have heard him on Satellite Radio drumming this same fallacy for months now. I think he has said it so much that he convinced himself it was true & will happen. But you see this same weird trend in other reporting rather it be sports or politics. I wish I could have commented sooner. My new job takes me away from CtB during the week so I play catch up on the weekends.
CONGRATS TO OUR “MINI CAVS IN CANTON ” THE MIGHTY QUINN ( TODAY 24 / PTS 13 ASST’S ) AND ” MY MAN MORELAND ” (TODAY 20 PTS / 11 REB’S—30 MINUTES ) FOR MAKING THE D-LEAGUE ALL STAR TEAM—JOB WELL DONE

Korver starting to pass the eye test of settling in on the court, but glad to hear it from his own mouth. http://www.nba.com/cavaliers/news/features/korver-170207
Super excited for “What’s about to come.” What is about to come, Kyle?! Will we win out our remaining games?!
At some point we will have LeBron, JR, Kyrie, Korver, and Frye on the court.
YEAH COLS— DERON HAS BEEN ON MY RADAR ALSO ( BUT SEEMS UNLIKELY TO HAPPEN ) AGREE WITH THE COMMENTS ON LIGGINS —BUT STILL THINK HE NEEDS / DESERVES SOME MINUTES EACH GAME JUST TO KEEP YOUR ” GAME SAVVY / INSTINCTS /” TUNED UP —–HEY COLS HAVE YOU TRIED THE -“-NEW BELGIUM –CITRADELIC “—-YOU WILL ENJOY !!
Love that beer
I’ll agree on the Citradelic! Fantastic beer!
As far as moves, it’d be helpful if Deron Williams got bought out, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. I’d be happy with Farmar or Chalmers I guess.
Deron would be idea but it’s unlikely…… Farmar is probably happening…
Really? You think they will sign Farmar?
JANUARY / PART OF FEBRUARY ARE ” SLOW MEDIA ” MONTHS FOR THE NBA OTHER THAN TALKING ABOUT ” PROPOSED TRADES LEADING UP TO THE TRADE DEADLINE —THESE JOURNALISTS HAVE TO TRY AND ” CREATE ” HYPE —INTEREST” ( DON’T AGREE WITH IT ) BUT THEY WILL GET VERY CREATIVE TO ” EARN A PAYCHECK “—-SEE WHERE SHUMP OUT THE NEXT COUPLE OF GAMES –DOES LEBRON SIT EITHER GAME OUT —ALSO I THINK IT IS A DISSERVICE TO LIGGINS TO TOTALLY IGNORE HIM / NOT GIVE HIM ANY MINUTES AND THEN THRUST HIM INTO A STARTERS ROLE —BELIEVE WE COULD… Read more »
I think the problem is that Liggins is a complete black hole on offense and really messes everything up. He’s older so I don’t know how much development he has left on offense. It’s a problem. Although he should get some run when defense is needed.
Liggins is the de facto starter for someone missing time. Kyrie out? Liggins in. Shumpert out? Liggins in.
Seems that way. It’d be nice if he could figure out how to play offense without turning the ball over and how to make the defense actually pay attention to him.
He’ll start tonight I’d guess.
Last time I looked, Liggins has a pretty nice percentage on 3’s.
Nice point four-ward, Elijah. I didn’t realize that Isola has said essentially the same thing for three years on KLove. Vardon was so bad last year also, when he had Love with “a good degree of certainty” going to the Lakers just the day before Love said he is staying long-term with the Cavs. That’s what KLove had always maintained too. I think Isola’s alleged sources from other teams arose this way: The “It’s Time To Retire” Zenmaster PJ told other teams that LeBron wanted KLove, and would they agree to be involved in a three-team deal. Then whichever teams… Read more »
Isola is just doing his job, without a doubt. But it’s strange that he is almost making it personal with LeBron, as the three years of articles are all about how LeBron wants to essentially force Love out (personally) for his buddy. I don’t want to post rumors during actual pieces but I’ve heard LeBron has grown frustrated of people putting ideas/thoughts in LeBron’s head and then posting them as “breaking news’. Isola is an example of this. along with Adrian Wojnarowski (when he famously said in LeBron’s mind he’s not coming home because of Miami). My source (I hate… Read more »
I think LeBron is finally tired of the media just making stuff up about him. Dude has been scandal free for his entire career, yet the media keep acting like he is some crazy ego monster who orders this and that and doesn’t care about anything but himself.
Meanwhile all of LeBron’s teammates and ex-teammates do nothing but praise the dude and talk about how hard he works. It’s time we shut up and enjoy him.
Or you could ignore what other people say and stop demanding what other people should think or say. Or you could always, as a wise man once said, shut up and enjoy him.
As your teammate, Eli, I’d like to praise you and talk about how hard you work. I wish people would just shut up and enjoy you.
I heard from an unnamed source that Nate would trade Eli for someone off the Knicks blog. Just calling it how I see it! (jk, of course)
Looks like I’m going to the Kings for Ben McLemore…
Braymond yelling at Durant is so absurd. What a horrible locker room that must be.
Everything is Awesome
NICE WRITE UP—-USED TO BE AN AVID ESPN FAN / DON’T EVEN BOTHER TO TURN ON ANYMORE —JUST WASTED ” TRASH “—-JORDAN CRAWFORD “LOBBYING ” FOR A FREE AGENT CONTRACT WITH THE CAVS —YES / NO ?
I’d have to say no on Crawford. While it is true that the Cavs have some sense of desperation, picking up a player for nearly $4M of real cash at the level of Crawford would be an odd pick.
Oh… but he sure knew how to play at Xavier! (Xavier Alum here)… that being said, his shot hasn’t translated to the NBA and he’s more of a gunner than Jamal is… I wish he were better bc his skill set would fit our bench. But the guy creates, that’s for sure (just usually for himself)
Im waiting for media to ask lbj if he’d play w/ crawford because crawford dunked on him in like 2009 during a camp as a college player. Tapegate then occured because “lebron made them destroy the tape”
