Breaking: Kevin Love Out 6 Weeks Following Knee Surgery
2017-02-14The Cavs got no Love this Valentine’s Day.
Kevin Love will miss the next six weeks of action for the Cleveland Cavaliers following arthroscopic surgery on his left knee the team announced today.
Love, who had an MRI on the knee after he experienced soreness and swelling following the Cavs 125-109 win over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, reportedly had a “loose body” removed from the knee during the procedure performed in New York City this morning performed by Dr. David Altchek.
The forward, who had been averaging 20 points and 11.1 rebounds per game this season, had been selected to his fourth All Star Game (his first as a Cav) but will unfortunately not be able to participate. This setback was the latest in a series of nagging physical ailments for Love this season, which have also included back spasms and a bout with food poisoning.
Tyronn Lue has named Channing Frye the starter in Love’s place for tonight’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, but no word yet on whether that will be an ongoing change.
So with no KLove our only good rebounder and guy who is not afraid to play a physical type of game is TT. I don’t know if you guys agree but I think the Cavs should try to sign a player with similar skills of TT. I bet know opposing teams will try to punish the Cavs on the boards and attack the paint a lot.
LeBron is not afraid of physical play. Also, if there were any guys with similar skills to TT, he wouldn’t be getting paid what he is.
However, we are defnitely hurting now depth wise.
Agree. That would be a true C.
The guys that come to mind like TT are Terrence Jones (NOP) and Ed Davis (POR). Either could probably be had since they’re on the last year of their deals. Both might be too expensive for Cavs to grab unless they get bought out…
LIKE TIM LEGLER VIEWPOINT ON LOVE’S INJURY / REST FOR LEBRON—-FEELTHAT # 1 SEED SHOULD NOT BE CAVS # 1 GOAL—TO OBTAIN HOME CT ADVANTAGE ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS WIN 1 ROAD GAME WHICH HE BELIEVES ( AND ALSO SO SHOULD THE CAVS ) THAT THEY ARE CAPABLE OF DOING —–HEALTH / REST ARE MORE IMPORTANT
PER AMICO HOOPS–OWNERSHIP HAS GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT TO INCREASE PAYROLL / TAX—–CAVS LOOKING AT TRADES —O.K. ALL YOU G.M’S INTERPRTATE PLEASE AND WHO DO YOU GO AFTER / WHO DO YOU TRADE
Too bad Orlando doesn’t have anything worth trading for, or I’d say Cavs could fleece them. What a clueless FO. I could see the Cavs getting someone like Collison, I suppose. I’d hate to give up Osman for someone like that, though.
We should not trade any of our stars (James, Ky, Love), starters (TT, JR), main rotational guys (Shump, Korver, Frye, RJ), fringe rotation players (Liggins, D-Will), our only real future asset (Osman) or Champ. McRae or Felder is fine. Eurostash guys are fine. Really, I’m cool with seeing if we can facilitate or use the TPE as a 3rd team & see what happens on the waiver wire. As long as there is a legit C & a PG at the end. I’m fine with Sanders/Smith/Benson + Chalmers/Farmar/Calderon/Cook. Orlando deal was good for them. The silly part was the trade… Read more »
I’m not sure there would be any takers out there for McRae, Felder or Eurostash guys… The only real asset outside of the rotational players would be Cedi… I think they’ve got who they’ve got, and I don’t expect a big trade (especially since they already traded away Birdman who would have been a salary piece throw in for a larger deal). If there’s a legit rotational big man or PG with upside, then they’d have to try trading Cedi for him. If not, they’ll just have to hope there are some decent buyout candidates willing to chase a ring…… Read more »

You guys saw that article, right? Basically, it says “Cols, STFU.” Rest James. Less minutes. REST REST REST.
Just read it. Yeah pretty much the first thing that popped into my head was Cols ;)
Even Sean Spicer is like, “Cols, c’mon. The evidence is overwhelming.”
Ah yes the old Car analogy – perfect representation of how the human body works. Same reason you gotta flush toxins from your system with cleanses *smh*. I’m with Cols on this one – lack of rest leads to bad game performances and players should rest if they’re tired. I also believe being tired naturally would lead to greater chance of injury. But playing someone who isn’t tired 41 minutes in a game versus 36 minutes in a game when they’re 32 has fsck all to do with their performance at age 35. Its not an odometer that we’re burning… Read more »
Nothing to do with cars. Just biology. Not about feeling tired. Just about repairing damaged cells. Nothing about odometer. Just physics. Science is real whether you believe it or not.
Yeah, sucks for Kev. Just glad he should return around April 1, like JR (at least on the present time line).
That #1 seed could be a challenge.
Wonder who will replace him… Beal is probably the most deserving, but if they go with a front court player, I’d expect it to be Whiteside, Drummond, Kristaps or Embiid…
Horford is also a legit choice. Love was not a wildcard, so I think they have to go frontcourt. Melo is also an option.
Horford’s numbers aren’t that great this year though… and he missed a bit of time earlier. Melo is an option, but it sounds like he’s not all that interested in going…
I go Whiteside with Miami’s surge.
Yeah. If they’d have voted later. Beal makes it over Walker. That’s one change I’d like to see. Vote later. The other is get rid of the ordinal ranking stuff. If they are going to average the fan + media + players votes, average the %s so it gives a more realistic picture (sometimes there a large distance from #3 to #4 while #2 & #3 are a dead heat) & avoids ties.
I, too, would go Hasan. Plus, the East needs a C with Gasol, Jordan, Cousins, & Stifle Tower on the other team.
Well, this is what I feared earlier, ‘minor’ surgery. Out 4-6 weeks (6 in this case). That’s April 1. Looking on the happy side, JR & Love should be fresh for the POs. Hopefully everyone else won’t be too tired. Hopefully this ensures we add a true C. If we had one, TT & Frye could play some more 4, in addition to James, RJ, D-Will, & JFJ. Good trade for the Raptors. If they can re-sign him, it gets to very good. Jonas + Serge + Carroll + DeRozan + Lowry is as good a V as there is… Read more »
If they resign Serge, their payroll is in the $130M range next year and they will have major tax implications…
That didn’t stop @cavsdan. Might depend on how the Cavs finish the season. Will Toronto be willing to spend that whopping price on the team if they still can’t get over the Cavs? I wouldn’t.
I don’t think the Raps owner has the same compunction to spend that @CavsDan does FWIW…
Could very well be.
I feel bad for Kev… he worked hard to be an All Star this season and deserved to be a part of this weekend…
Interesting stat from ESPN Stats and Info…
The Cavaliers are 40-24 over the last 3 seasons when one of the Big 3 (LeBron James, Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving) does not play, including 11-3 when James and Irving both play and Love sits. They are 0-8 when 2 or more of them do not play.
Channing on starting tonight…

I love this quote…
https://twitter.com/mcten/status/831551687336792065
His efficiency is way up this year and assists. If he limits his turnovers, this is a great regular season for Lebron IMO
Amin Elhassaan’s and ESPN’s worship of the Warriors is rather obnoxious.
He got markedly less noisy after the Cavs beat them last year…
He’s been exceptionally noisy this season, though…
Which is weird considering how that team is hated everywhere they go and their locker room is full of arrogant buttholes.
Unselfish, that’s the word you are forgetting. Apparently it’s unselfish to jack up 3’s off the dribble from 3/4 court and start fake fights to motivate possibly the best scorer of this generation. Unselfish is all encompassing, it includes arguing every call and leading the world in wtf flagrant fouls. Easy to misrepresent ego oriented prima donnas when you have a juggernaut. Let’s see what Pop does in the playoffs, he actually gets what the term unselfish means.
Hahaha. Light years baby. Light years.
Ethan Strauss is releasing his new sports drink, Warriors Kool Aid, which he drinks every night wrapped in a Curry blanky at the foot of his Shrine to Bray.
He’d be mortally offended you didn’t include the “Sherwood” in his name… ;)
Lol, oops
Big Kat is a beast, fun game tonight.
Also, IMO, losing Ross hurts a lot more than getting Ibaka helps.Their RPMs are almost identical and Ross fills a need (wing depth) while Ibaka plays a position they already have.
Good point
Raptors fans seem to think they have a wing surplus.
Count me as not all that concerned about this. It’s a short term loss, long term gain thing, but Kevin doesn’t miss a beat when he comes back from fairly minor surgery. Glad they are doing the right thing. Don’t eff around with knees. Just keep Bron’s minutes down and sign Keith Benson. Or even Ryan Kelly…
When was the last minor surgery he had? He hasn’t had one since being on the Cavs has he?
Didn’t he have surgery on the shoulder?
Ya but I don’t consider that minor, he was out for months…
No surgery is “minor.” Maybe he’ll be fine, but it will likely be a problem. Not only the injury itself, which could be aggravated, but by being shut down everything gets thrown off. Your cardio, your timing, your shot, etc. Its a problem.
Agree and this particularly goes for knee surgery – I’ve had two of them myself. To get the small space between bone & cartilage big enough to see what they are doing, surgeons inflate the knee joint with fluid. This washes out all the natural joint lubricant, so along with the damage from cutting holes, inflammation, clotting etc, it takes a while for the knee’s internal environment to recover. Knowing how long it took both times for my knee to feel close to normal, it just amazes me that any athlete can get back inside of 2 months after an… Read more »
Love will be well rested for the playoffs
So… maybe not three weeks…

This is comically predictable
https://twitter.com/ringer/status/831560103983726594
God, Litman is freaking horrible. She knows literally nothing about basketball.
This is just unbearable. I refuse to give that link or page a click. Nope, not from me.
OMG. They really wrote this? What a sad state of affairs.
https://twitter.com/cavs/status/831565215384875008
Does anyone go on warriors blogs whenever they lose or get bad news and pretend to be interested in their problems and suggest obvious ways to get better? Asking for a friend.
Take your meds Cols!
I did not realize the D-leaguer were paid so little. Sometimes billionaires make me want to punch somebody.
http://deadspin.com/it-is-time-for-all-nba-d-leaguers-to-be-paid-a-living-w-1792344265
Wow that’s an eye opener. I wasn’t aware of the total disparity between D leaguers and NBA players. What a shame on the league…
I’m not 100% sure that article is accurate on its discussion of the post-CBA change salaries for dLeaguers, but sad if it is.
Serge has not been the shot-blocker this year that he’s been in the past… He’s still averaging 1.6 per game (good for 11th in the league) but it’s the least he’s averaged since his rookie year (according to ESPN stats). His DRPM is also way down this year. Expect both will probably improve with switch to a better team, but looking at the numbers, Millsap would have been a better fit for the Raps if they could have pried him loose from Hawks…
Thompson is a better rim protecter than Ibaka. Still a good trade for the Raptors. Still not enough to challenge a healthy Cavs team.
I agree with Cols. Ibaka is not that relevant.
I think he’s relevant in that he’ll probably help them out of their recent decline, and put them back in the mix for a top three seed… But probably not relevant enough to give them an advantage over the Cavs (provided KLove comes back okay)…
As for the Ibaka trade, I don’t count the Raptors as a real threat to the Cavs. I can see Toronto much more easily losing in the first or second round, rather than challenging the Cavs. Only an injury to Lebron can beat the Cavs in the playoffs and as we all know robots don’t get hurt.
“Back injections” is code for “Replacing parts.”
If he comes back at 6 weeks it will give him two weeks of the regular season to warm up. Even without Kevin, we shouldn’t have a problem with our first round opponent. This gives him an additional 2 weeks to warm up. Unfortunately, who knows how he will come back from this. Will his shot be on? Will his strength be down? Will he lose weight again?
If he comes back when expected, then it is not a really big deal. Hopefully, he will be in full strength by the second round, which will be challenging this year. Also, it will make much more difficult to hang onto the first place in the East, with Boston making some quality road wins of late.
Lastly, Lebron can kiss rest goodbye (if that was the plan in the first place).
Maybe he can rest next season?
Lol, like the whole regular season?
I think we should at least sit him through January, he obviously hates that month.
GREAT IDEA!!!
Rest for LeBron is more important than finishing first.
Wow that just sucks! Let’s hope he can be ready for at least the second round.
I can only assume this will spawn a whole new round of Melo rumors…
Hope he comes back healthy. Basketball aside, hate to see a player miss time especially when at peak.
On another topic, do you guys think Raptors bridged the gap with Cavs with the acquisition of Ibaka ?
Frauds looked especially fraudulent last night. I knew I could count on you to show up the minute the Cavs got some bad news.
Zero analysis, zero sense as always. Stick to supporting Shumpert.
That’s funny. Cols used to hate Shumpert.
When? I’ve never hated Shumpy.
Nope, I don’t believe Ibaka is that good. It could make them the second best team again. Right now the Celtics are the second best in the east IMO.
Toronto needs another consistent scorer like a Carmelo or similar to be at the same level of the Cavs.
I’m shocked ibaka hasn’t embraced the chance to be the man in Orlando. Could’ve earned himself a $200 million dollar deal with a great season.
Even with Love out and Ibaka in, I doubt it. That’s a nice pick up by them though, especially if he regains his defensive form.
I think so too. Given that Toronto’s #1 scorer doesn’t shoot 3, Ibaka shooting 3 will empower them more. Ibaka has also been a great shot blocker. Still, how will mesh with Jonas to be seen but I still see it as low risk high returns kind of move.
Sucks.
Not a good Valentine’s Day.
I got oreos.
Come on now, just a road bump, at least it’s now not later in the season or playoffs. Curry was 1-11 from 3, think on that this Hallmark holiday
Nobody got me any chocolates :(
Here you go JMay…
