Recap: Cavs 122, Magic 102 (Return of the Snipers)
2017-04-05This game between the Cavs, now tied at the top of the Eastern Conference, and eastern conference weaklings, the Magic, was surprisingly close until it became a ‘John Wick’ style shooting display. Despite the lack of full game dominance, the Cavs were playing defense physically throughout and held Orlando to 38% from the field. Oh, and the threes were flowing. Long distance gunners, J.R and Korver, were both in good form, Korver appeared to have no rust following his foot injury and J.R’s appeared to be shaking his off. J.R made four threes in the first 3:12 of a beautiful 40 to 23 third quarter, and Cleveland as a unit started 6-7 on threes– with James getting assists on five of them. Korver scored 11 in 12 minutes and the gravity he created on the floor in this short time was evident. The third quarter dominance of this game painted a picture of what made the 2016 Cavs so dominant in the playoffs.
After this game the Cavs became the third team in league history to reach 1,000 3s in a season, joining Golden State (1,077 last season) and Houston, which has dropped 1,109 this season.
It was all about the “big four,” Tuesday. Lebron notched up his second straight triple double; 18 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Kevin Love got 28 points, Kyrie Irving 24 and JR Smith 19. Lebron has now scored in double figures for the 788th game in a row and is now second on the all-time list behind Michael Jordan (866). For the Magic; Evan Fournier scored 21 points, Aaron Gordon, Terrence Ross and Elfrid Payton all scored 12 points.

First Quarter:
The Cavs entered this match knowing that only victory was acceptable to keep pace with the Celtics at the top of the eastern conference. They started off quickly with an assist fueled six-point lead, the Magics however hit back by scoring run of 15 -3 to take the lead at 15- 9. Ross and Fournier were doing exceptionally well offensively. The Cavs however roared back behind a “why ya been gone so long?!” J.R hot streak and ended the quarter just three points behind: 28-31.
Second Quarter:
The second quarter was not dissimilar to the first and both teams battled pretty evenly: surprising considering the Magic have the worst record against the Cavs among all teams in the history of the NBA. Kevin and LeBron started wearing Orlando out inside and at the foul line – Kevin in the post, and LeBron on the drive. Cleveland ended the quarter with a 2-point advantage 55-53.
Third Quarter:
The third quarter saw a total transformation in the balance of power in the game, due to some high level offensive and defensive play by the Cavs, they totally dominated the quarter and scored a whopping 43-points compared to 20-points scored by the shell shocked Magics. The quarter ended at 96 -75 in favor of the Cavs. Magic coach Frank Vogel, talked about the the third quarter blitz post game.
The bottom line is you have to bring help to elite players. Kyrie and LeBron had 13 assists in that quarter. That triggers their championship-level ball movement. That’s why they’re champs. They were at their best in that quarter.
Vogel, like all basketball fans has seen what Lebron can do when the ball is moving effectively. The third Quarter was where Lebron and Kyrie chipped most of their game assists, and the offense looked more fluent than it did in all of March. The final 50% three point field goal percent can attest to how much better the Cavs are when the ball is in constant motion.
Fourth Quarter:
Can anyone say “rest?” It was good to see the starters sit some following the grind that was the Pacers game – though LeBron did stay in long enough to get his triple double. With the team’s relative age it will be important to quickly handle easily beatable teams to allow for maximized rest leading into the playoffs. This post season, like the last few, could easily be decide by someone not being at 100%.
The Cavs converted 53.7% (44-82) of Field goals compared to 38.4% (33-86) by the Magic. The Cavs scored 50% of their 3-pointers (18-36) compared to 33.3% (11-33) for the Magic. Cleveland won despite Orlando shooting an insane 96% (25-26) from the charity stripe compared to 76% (16-21) for the Cavs, an area of continued weakness. The Cavs had a total of 30 assists, one of the seasons high marks, and a respectable 12 turnovers, compared to 23 and 14 for the Magics. The locker room seemed jovial, which always bodes well, Lebron was quoted saying. ‘I like everything,” he said. ”I love my brothers.”

Winning is a habit. Not to preach or get on a soap box of self righteousness, but I’ve found success breeds success. The term resting on their laurels very much sums up this regular season for the Cavs. What I want to see tonight. Passion, quit pretending these games don’t matter, set a goal, reach the goal, integrity in every detail. In the morning when I wake up, I set a goal for the day, a reachable one. If I accomplish that goal, I’m who I think I am, if not, perhaps I’m delusional. Excuses are easy, trying and failing… Read more »
And losing is a disease… (sorry couldn’t resist)

Lol
A plea for tonight:
If the Cavs lose, can we please not have any doom and gloom in the game thread or after? LeBron has made it clear he doesn’t care about the #1 seed. A loss is meaningless. Actually the whole regular season is meaningless.
Keep a level head folks.
What about if they lose by 30?
Then they lose by 30. They will still easily beat this celtics team in the playoffs. How many times must I say this until you believe me?
They might beat this Celtics team in the playoffs, but they’re not getting to the finals unless they step it way up from the last few weeks. Way up.
I would argue that April is not meaningless. It is the time championship teams used to get into a groove for the playoffs. You want to have everything figured out during the last few weeks of the playoffs, not during the playoffs. Why? If you are rolling, it means less messing around in the early rounds which leads to more rest and fresher legs in the finals. However, I would be satisfied if they just play a good defensive game tonight, win or lose.
Last few weeks of the regular season
And I would rather be the Warriors having won 11 or 12 straight – without KD no less – heading into the playoffs than the way the Cavs have played. The Cavs sure needed these last three wins, but the combined record of the teams they beat is 93-141. Not exactly stellar competition.
Really? After what you witnessed the last two playoffs, where the Cavs have an extra gear and the Warriors do not, you’d rather be them?
I do not understand how you could have experienced the last two years and still feel this way.
Congratulation trashing another thread with your constant disagreements with people just posting their thoughts. Who proclaimed you the all knowing Ctb blogger? Wait, I know, you did. Like your ludicrous comment that you “have the pulse of this team” because the Cavs beat three teams which are almost a combined 50 games under .500. See EG’s comment above too.
So being positive and optimistic is trashing a thread? OK. Got it.
There’s a marked difference between being positive and repeatedly denigrating others for their opinions if they don’t align with yours…
Totally diverse years. Two years ago the Cavs started slowly (19-20 I think) then got on a huge roll after the Mozzy/JR/Shump deals. I think we went 13-1 vs the West after the deal and the one loss was a game Kyrie sat & James choked some FTs late in a loss to Houston. Last year we cruised to the #1 seed despite the early injuries to Kyrie & Shump. Some issues there towards the end that we did get sorted in the run in. This year, we started great & have had two losing months in the last 3.… Read more »
As it’s been said many times before… don’t tell people how to feel or react. It’s not your place. If you don’t like it when people post what you feel is a negative or “doom and gloom” comment, feel free to ignore it…
But shouldn’t the people who post doom and gloom stuff after every loss feel a little bit ashamed when the Cavs make the Finals for the third straight year? I thought after two years in a row we were done with this thinking.
Saying people should be ashamed for caring is a little bit backwards don’t you think.
No more ashamed than you should feel for your insufferably repetitive comments… ;)
I have to say, I hope Shump’s minutes get reduced drastically. I hope Lue finds a good 15 min or so per game for Derrick. Also, I’m skeptical of Deron, defensively he seems to be a huge liability. His minutes should be really limited.
Korver should be back up SG, not Shump. RJ should be back up SF. Derrick back up PF, Frye back up C. Deron back up PG. That pretty much takes Shump out. Not sure if Lue or Lebron see it that way. Lebron at times has trouble accurately assessing team mates.
I love LeBron so much, this is what he said about taking on the talentless try hards tonight,
“I don’t know, I’ve played in a lot of big games . . . I don’t… I’m the last person to ask about a big game in the regular season. I’m sorry.
Taking nothing from them, they’ve been playing some great ball, but I’m not one to get caught up in the regular season. I’m sorry. I’ve been to six straight Finals, man.”
Sounds like TT is out for a few games. The amount of injuries the Cavs have had is nuts. They’ve had a full roster for like 6 games total.
It’s amazing that this team is in first place still.
You know I was just thinking about this. I have admittedly been really frustrated with the Cavs’ play this past March. But man, the schedule was so rough, so many road games and quite a few back to backs, with one more tonight. And then on top of that the injuries. Every week, this whole season it’s been somebody. Things have gone so poorly (schedule, rest, injuries, incorporating new players) for the Cavs yet they are tied for first in the east. Things have gone about as good as they could for Boston and yet they don’t have a lead… Read more »
Yep. Preach preach
Larry Sanders playing tonight?
Probably. What’s the over/under on minutes until foul out? 10?
7 minutes.
I wonder if Lue would ever consider starting him and keeping Frye in the second unit. Probably not.
It would be really dumb to start Sanders.
3rd paragraph, LeBron’s Triple Double was for 18-11-11.
Sounds like TT out tonight after MRI on his thumb, so I’d almost guarantee a loss. Wasn’t too confident to begin with…

We will sweep or win in five if that team of talentless try hards can even make it to us.
