Finals Live Thread: Cavs @ Warriors, Game 2 (#doingwhatyoudo)
2017-06-04The Warriors had 56 points in the paint in game one. They had 21 points off of turnovers. They had 18 second chance points.i
Each of those numbers needs to come down in game two. No matter what the Cavs do, they must work on controlling the ball after misses, defending the paint, and protecting the ball. There’s lots of reasons they have to do those things. For one, they help win basketball games. But really, it’s because those are the things the Cavs can be better than the Warriors at.
The Warriors are known for whipping the ball around, hitting 3s, and running. The Cavs are known for hitting 3s too, but only after a hard drive and kick, or on ball screen. In a lot of ways, when these teams are both at their best, they are doing their damage from deep. Often times, it’s impossible to stop them from raining 3s, no matter the defensive scheme is. There’s a reason the Cavs are number one in 3-point percentage this post season and the Warriors are number four.
In game one the Cavs, allowed the Warriors to hit just 12 3s. That was solid, but it came at the expensive of the above mentioned areas. Areas the Cavs can win at.
The Wine and Gold need to not worry about stopping the inevitable 3s that will come by sacrificing rebounding to get out to shooters, or running to shooters and giving up dunks on fast breaks. The Warriors will hit their long ball one game. The Cavs will too.
Cleveland can protect the rim against the Warriors. The Warriors aren’t looking to kill you with drives. The want to get back cuts, get out in transition , and hit 3s. Cleveland doesn’t have to worry about some over the top jumping dunk dude. There’s no guy one the Warriors whose number skill is getting into the paint necessarily. Why let them dominate down low? The Cavs can own the paint. Kyrie Irving can get to the rack. Tristan Thompson can roll hard. LeBron James can post up, use his shoulder on drives, or roll to the rim.
Cleveland is also definitively the better rebounding team. Kevin Love had 21 by himself in game one. Tristan Thompson is usually able to snag five or six offensive boards a night, and LeBron James can grab how ever many boards he decides too. The Cavs out rebounded the Warriors by nine in game one and that’s including the 15 offensive boards they gifted Golden State. Cleveland has out boarded teams by four per night in the playoffs. The Warriors just 1.8 per night in the playoffs.
The Cavs are also much better at protecting the ball. Statistically both teams play semi-loose given their turnovers per game this season, but the Warriors will play very lose and fast the more comfortable they get in a game. They also pass the ball much more than Cleveland.
Cleveland throws one or two passes before they shoot the ball. There’s not as much that can go wrong. They can focus more on each action offensively because they aren’t doing as much as Golden State. And, they must do that. Their transition defense is awful, so why not stop transition ball from happening as often by not turning it over?
If you still don’t believe that the turovers, points in the paint, and rebounds are really what matters for Cleveland, let’s look at the simple math. The Warriors took 106 shots on Thursday. The Cavs took just 86. If both teams take the same number of 3s, and hit the same percentage from the floor, who is going to win the game? The Cavs need the math to be in their favor, no matter how their offense is doing.
I’m picking the Cavs to clean up their act tonight. They’ve got this game, 113-101.
Game 1 & 2 2016 NBA Finals vs. 2017 NBA Finals. Same story, different names. Cavs need Game 3 and I think they have a pretty good shot to get it. I’m sticking to my Warriors in 6 prediction. Warriors in 5 could happen but I think the Cavs have enough to take game 5. The only way this goes 7 is injury/suspension. The Warriors are just too stacked . . .
Made me go hmmmmm
Dan Gilbert loved him, apparently.
What pick was he again? 54…….yeah it would be extremely lucky to find anyone that late that was serviceable.
Really have to admire both Durant and the Warriors for taking the ‘hardest road’…they are heroes…
Trying desperately to appreciate the greatness of LeBron and the chance to once again watch him in the Finals. The difficulty is my hatred for the Warriors is clouding that appreciation:)
The major problem is, while we are competitive with James on the floor, when he rests we get scorched. He also is getting gassed, and when he gets gassed we get scorched. If Lebron could play the whole game at peak level we could win or at least be competitive. He can’t though. Not anymore. Maybe 6-7 years ago he could have. He is still the best player on the floor when he plays and isn’t gassed. He can only do so much though.
Maybe if he had a two-time league MVP, a roster that won 73 games without him, a DPOY, and the best 2-guard in the league along his side, he wouldn’t be so gassed.
Clearly. That’s the situation though. The cavs somehow have to be better defensively. I just don’t know how they can be though with our personnel.
Exactly!

This is so accurate!
Monday morning QB here as they say. If the CAVS opponent moves more than three feet away from them, the CAVS player gets lost on who they are guarding. The Warriors are having a shooting practice with all the uncontested shots. It looks like a scrimmage game for the Warriors. The Warriors are loaded and probably will go down as the best NBA team ever if and when they win this year. I thought last year’s Warriors team could have been the best ever, but they lost in the finals. We have NEVER witnessed a bunch of athletic players on… Read more »
I think they are the best 1-6 lineup ever, easily. It’s like if the Jordan Bulls added prime Larry Bird or prime Magic Johnson. It’s just stupid. And they didn’t even have to go with a terrible bench. Hope Silver is happy.
To me it was a combination of the bad Cavs defense getting exposed again and obviously the ridiculous fact that the Warriors now have 2 former MVP’s on the same team combined with 2 more all stars all on their peak years. I tip my hat to the Cavs specially LeBron who are still fighting but to me they will be lucky if they win one game at least.
All I can think now is how the league feels about this lack of competition cause to me it’s just ridiculous.
I hate this. I hate the warriors. They have ruined basketball. KD has ruined the spirit of competition. I hope Lebron can figure something out.
Yep. We are over here talking about Derrick Williams and they are like we will
Just plug in dirant.
For real, no respect for him. No respect for warriors not wanting a real rubber match.
More shump on KD will help, and we really just need to figure out how to play Frye and not get killed. TT can’t compete on the boards and that’s the skill he is supposed to have over their bigs. He can’t shoot, can’t dribble, can’t pass, and doesn’t require a defender. He either shuts us all up in game 3, or he rides the pine and we go small the rest of the way
That lineup change to start thee second and third was awful. LeBron and the scrubs has been great all year. Why change it?
If Cavs show fight and energy entire game for 3 and 4….should be more competitive series…..Warriors team is beatable, Cavs have to believe it and have to fight for it…Kyrie needs to step up, JR and TT need to park on the bench and I would love to see more minutes from Dahntay and Derrick….they can’t be any worse than what we have seen from JR and TT through two games….see if Lue is the coach he is and I hope to see another sweet comeback.
Cavs still ahead of last year’s pace.
Maybe not ahead, but on the same track. I do appreciate your optimism.
Cavs can still win this in 7… but they’re going to have to dig deep… need to find more ways to slow down KD and give Bron help so he’s not worn out by the second half from chasing him around…
Dunno how. Without LBJ out there, they scorch us.
Serious optimism, EG…I think the Cavs might be able to win two, but at this point to me, looks like one is more likely….
Looked just as bad last year. I’m with you, EG. We’ll see how they react to a loss
Lue won’t do it but I would rather see Derrick get more minutes.
If he doesn’t, he’ll get his team swept in the finals.
Yeah. They got Kevin Durant but if we play Derrick williams more it’s all good?? Nope.
Exactly lol, Cols is right. There’s a reason why Lue doesn’t play Derrick, he gets lost in a lot of defensive switches and he can’t hit an outside shot consistently which is bad for spacing.
He can’t do much at all besides finish athletically. There’s a reason he’s a journeyman player and considered a pretty major draft bust.
If warriors fan shows his face tomorrow can you guys ban him?
With you on that Cols
Agree. No need to rub salt in the wound, and that is all it would be if he comments no matter what he is saying. Showing up after warriors wins while disappearing in the final 3 games last year pretty much says what that is about.
So JR, TT and Derron are pretty much unplayable for game 3…
LeBron was beaten pretty badly on some defensive plays tonight… he looked tired…
You could see it towards the end of the second quarter. Nobody else stepped up to help on the offensive side either.
He destroyed himself in the first half…nobody showed up enough in the 2nd
I wanna go back in time and tell the players unions that a one time cap spike sucks.
Gah. What really sucks is we are by far their best competition.
The NBA has a big problem in their hands if the Cavs lose the series this type of way…
Yep.
The Cavs own the east but can’t win a single game against the Warriors in the finals. And to make it worse, this is only their first year with KD which was supposed to be their weakest year.
Could Derrick Williams and Dahntay Jones be any worse than say Korver and JR? I mean 2 games in CAvs need to make some adjustments here….I can’t believe those guys would be any worse
Derrrick’s stroke looks better than JR’s
Lol… Enchilada always gets a dunk and a three… every time
I’m going to rewatch game 7.
Welp. Just hope we don’t drop our pants on home court.
Yep
Nate. Them adding Durant isn’t an excuse. It’s what happened. You think the Warriors can beat the Cavs without him? Evidence is last years Finals. They can’t.
Shut up.
JR, Frye, Kyrie, and Dwill sucked tonight.
So did Tony Brothers…
Yro
Just once I would like a hard foul on Curry and Durant in next two games…..have DWill2 or Dahntay do it….be physical and lay these guys out…I’m only looking for one time
