Cavs Sign Calderon

Cavs Sign Calderon

2017-07-01 Off By Mike Schreiner

The Cleveland Cavaliers made their first official move of free agency, signing point guard Jose Calderon to a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum of $2.3 million. News of Calderon’s signing was first shared by his agency, Priority Sports.

While the Cavaliers were linked to Calderon around last February’s Trade Deadline, it’s a bit of a surprise to see them sign him now, so early in free agency. While Calderon was an extremely efficient offensive player in his prime—he has a 50-40-90 season under his belt and has typically had amazing assist to turnover ratios—he declined tremendously last season in terms as a shooter, and has never been much of a defender. As he will be 36 by the start of training camp, it’s hard to see him bouncing back much, although he will likely be left wide open in the Cavaliers’ offense.

This isn’t meant to bash Calderon, an extremely intelligent player who is respected around the league. As recently as the 2015-2016 season, he started 72 games while averaging over 28 minutes and 41% from three. It’s simply that there are likely going to be better options available for the veteran’s minimum later in free agency. Perhaps Dan Gilbert sees Calderon as an affordable and easy player to move aside if Kay Felder (a Gilbert favorite) proves he is ready to backup Kyrie Irving, but considering the Cavaliers’ previous interest in Calderon, that seems a bit unlikely.

Regardless of the reasons, Jose Calderon is now a Cleveland Cavalier. If he can even approach his career norms in terms of passing and outside shooting, he should be a competent backup in the regular season. Stayed tuned to see what the Cavaliers do next in an offseason that has been nothing but boring.
