Podcast Episode 144: Millenium Edition

Nate Smith, Tom Pestak, and Sam Meyer spent the first 2000 seconds of this pod gushing over the Tribe, their 19th straight victory, and their pursuit of 20. Inspired, we broke down the Cavs’ probable starting and crunch time lineups to start the season and how it was put together. Tom and Sam argued over Dan Gilbert’s right and prerogative to do and say whatever he wants. We mused over whether it’s possible to grade Koby Altman as a GM, Tyronn Lue as a coach, and the likes of Kyrie Irving and Isaiah Thomas as players. We also questioned LeBron’s GM ability. Sam gave us his sports medicine opinion on the Isaiah Thomas hip injury and Jason Lloyd’s article on it in the Athletic. We talked about Cedi Osman, Eric Moreland and Jae Crowder, Tom’s Jay Bruce moment, his new electric lawnmower and everything wrong (and right) with Millenials.
As always, you can listen above, on Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts, or Google Play.
CORRECTION – The podcast states that the Cavs signed Eric Moreland to a two-way contract. That is incorrect. Moreland is a camp invite, but the Cavs signed John Holland to one of their two NBA/G-League two way contracts. Check out Mike Schreiner’s profiles on Holland and on Eric Moreland from last summer for more details. Thanks to commenter, Jason, for pointing this out.
CORRECTION No. 2 – The Cavs never signed Moreland, he was signed by the Pistons earlier this summer. Also, we suck at blogging in September.
Looks like Shumpert is aware of his issues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4umTs2wv4Y&t=12m5s
Corey Hughey and I ran into each other at the team shop at the Jake tonight. Actually, I accidentally cut in line and didn’t recognize him (like at all). Now we have to repeat this ritual to keep the streak alive.
Good pod. Did I get the Moreland notion from you guys? Anyway, Arch was right, he is still a Piston. So 2 camp spots left.
Maybe. I thought I got it from you! We were were way too preoccupied with our lawnmowers to report news on the bottom end of the Cavs roster. Clearly.
Ha, that is funny! Anywho, all the digging I did points to Arch being right. Saw a news report, but it was 1 year old to the day. He is with Detroit.
Tribe are amazing. Kipnis is close to being back. Chis is back. Miller on Mend. Zimmer’s out 6-8 weeks. A deep post-season run COULD allow him to return. If Salazar can straighten himself out in the pen, lookout.
I have been wondering what to do when Kip is back. He is an excellent second base man, but Jose is world class and really belongs at second. Now that Zimmer is out six to eight weeks, Kip is going to go back to playing center field, which he always did until the Indians converted Kip and Chisenhall from OF to IF when they joined the organization. Chisinhall is already back in the OF and a good RF. It makes more sense to put Kip at 3B for next year, just because that is a better infield. The current plan,… Read more »

As an illustration of the depth of the Tribe right now, consider a two person game of picking two teams (taking turns) from the current Indians + the guys on IR, and fill out two rosters with guys from the minors. Although they would be short on pitching, both teams would be competitive in the AL, and might be fighting for a wild card. If I was picking first, I would have to decide between Kluber, Miller, and Jose. On second thought, I would probably go with Kluber first, because there are never enough pitchers.

Indians have a +102 run differential over this 20 game win streak. The last team to have over a +100 run differential over a 20 game span were the 1939 NY Yankees (+129), who won the WS that year.
According to ESPN, the Tribe have the best defensive player in the minors and I’ve never heard of him: 1. Eric Stamets, SS, Cleveland Indians Stamets saved 24 runs this season, more than any other player in the minor leagues. While that total is a new career high for him, he’s gotten to be pretty familiar with the top of that leaderboard over the past few years. He has recorded one of the three highest DRS totals among qualified shortstops every year since 2014, also reaching the top of that list in 2015. Besides demonstrating how impressive his defensive numbers… Read more »
Or package him in a trade for Anthony Davis.
I think this blog prefers Boogie.
I disagree again. Trade him for Davis!
LeBron and LINDOR for Boogie!
Yeah, Boogie is more realistic…

Tribe only 3.5 games behind the Dodgers for the best record in baseball. It felt like just a month ago, they trailed the Dodgers by 20 games.
It was actually three weeks ago that they trailed the Dodgers by 20 games. Since then: 20-0 vs. 3-16.
That’s incredible!
It really is. I mean, the ’62 Giants probably never gained that much ground that fast on the ’62 Mets. It just doesn’t happen.
You should also be counting soccer Dads in your podcast demographic.

There’s reason to hope and think there won’t be a hangover when the streak ends.
The final three A’s wins in that streak were all walk-offs. The Indians’ final win in their 14-game streak last year was a 19-inning game that wiped out the bullpen and probably burned an extra starter too.
But in this streak, the Indians have been on cruise control. They’ve been so dominant that there’s been little drama, few high-leverage innings for pitchers, no extra-inning games, no walk-offs.
Completely agree.
Me too. One big difference is the Tribe depth, especially in position players. I would like to see another couple AA and AAA pitchers up for September in case we get another 18 inning game.

Doncic, Bagley, Porter. Top 3 in some kind of order unless that C blows up for Arizona.
Leadoff HR for Lindor.
LINDOR!!!! Home Run #30!!!!
Check that, Moreland has partial guarantees this year.

I thought Moreland was signed by Detroit?
Me too. I haven’t seen the CBS report confirmed by anyone Cavs, Vardon, Amico, etc. I checked & it looks like his contract with Detroit is guaranteed. So unless they waived him, this looks to be incorrect.
MORELAND PUT UP SIME NICE STATS FOR CANTON / DECENT OFF POST GAME / REBOUNDER / SHOT BLOCKER
SO I GUESS “ENCHILADA ” IS GONE ?—-ODDS ARE SIR”D” GETS THE OTHER 2 WAY CONTRACT—-ARE WADE / LEBRON JUST TEASING THE PUBLIC/ CAVS FANS –OR SHOULD WE READ MORE INTO IT ?
I think we should obviously assume that both will be signing with LA next year… /s
You should read the article. Vardon believes Wade would sign in Cleveland this season, if bought out. But they need to clear a roster spot.
It was less a comment on the article and more a comment on national rhetoric surrounding James’s decisions.

I hope Pointer snags the last camp deal.
All signs point to Sir Dominic!
Eric Moreland signed to camp deal. 19 contracts at the moment. Can keep 17 & invite 20 to camp.
Guaranteed: IT, JR, Bron, Love, TT; Rose, Korver, Crowder, Frye; Shump, RJ, Green; Calderon, Osman, Zizic.
2 way = Holland
Partial/Non G: Tavares, Felder.
Camp = Moreland.

Not really pumped for the season, especially since the Tribe is playing so well. But will get into it as it progresses. Anticipate lots of drama, especially with Gilbert running the show. Was listening to the BR Podcast with Howard Beck and Jason Lloyd and they agree that the Cavs won the title despite of Dan Gilbert, because LeBron is that good.
I don’t know if you are part of a long running CtB joke about “Gilbert is Beelzebub”, or you really believe it. Do you know who talked LeBron into coming back and wrote all the checks he wanted? Howard Beck and Jason Lloyd are right about one thing, LeBron is that good. Otherwise they are yammering.
Uh, no. Lebron decided to come back and Gilbert knew he had to go apologize so they could move forward. Gilbert was the only thing that would have PREVENTED Lebron from coming out. So, to his credit, he got out of the way. He then, for the first time I remember, basically let professionals run the show, i.e., Griffin, who proceeded to use the assets to build a championship roster, who fired the coach Dan wanted over Lue, and who pulled off numerous trades that were praised from all corners as both smart and getting good value. Although not perfect… Read more »
He was paying three head coaches during the Finals, including one that was coaching the other side. He shows up at the Trump White House during the CUBS championship visit – a president, by the way, that is the most universally hated by the NBA in history, after LBJ has quite vocally opposed Trump. And now, there are absolutely believable rumblings that LBJ has decided he can not stay BECAUSE of Gilbert. That the relationship is untenable. Maybe its true, maybe it isn’t. But Gilbert has, without a shadow of a doubt, been more of a hindrance than a help… Read more »

You guys miss the boat on Brooklyn pick scenario. That pick will not get traded unless:
1) James committs
2) Has to be more than 1 year rental.
The question was not whether it will, it was whether it should. I agree with you on the second point. I’m not sure the first point is the determining factor on whether it’s traded. If the Nets look competent in preseason, it could get moved. I’d move it now before they do a 2009-2013 rockets and punch above their weight with everyone else tanking.
Should. Fair enough. It should not get moved unless James committs or for more than a 1 year rental (no Boogie). Yes, Nets have more company at the bottom this year (Bulls, Suns, Lakers, Hawks, Kings, Pacers). Still think they are a virtual cinch for bottom 5. No way do you deal it now. If you shed Shump we could be in a spot to do a S&T next year.
Looking at that list, I’m just not sure Nets are bottom five, especially because 4 of 6 of those other teams will be trying to lose and the Nets won’t.
The assets acquired in that trade, in terms of value, are in this order:
Crowder
the Pick
the Tall Guy
Thomas. If he ever plays for us, he gets moved up above the Tall Guy (by the way, that’s his name until he earns a better one).
NBA 2k18 next week, and preseason in less than 3 weeks. Very pumped for this season. Eurobasket has been a nice distraction. I just cannot get into baseball – too many games, games themselves are too long and slow. But to each his own
Starters = Rose, JR, Bron, Love, TT.
Crunch1: James, JR, Korver, Crowder, Love.
Stopper: Shump, JR, Crowder, James, TT.
Maybe if Shump is surrounded by a really good defensive lineup he will realize his potential…
I firmly believe Shump will realize his true potential this year, i.e., as a salary thrown in for a trade.
Starters: Barf, JR, Bron, Love TT
Bench 1st Unit: Barf, Korver, Crowder, LeBron, Barf
Bench 2nd Unit: Barf, Osman, Barf, Love, Barf
