Podcast 145: Cajoled Seniors
2017-09-26https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/episode-145-cajoled-seniors
Since it was Cavs Media Day, the C:tB ownership triumvirate felt compelled to shuffle their tired old bones into the podcast booth to hit the highlights of the events. Of course we did kick things off with a decent dose of Tribe: the Podcast as the Indians roll into post-season play, before diving into everything LeBron and the gang said to the local and national media. We rapped about LBJ’s mindset, his response to Kyrie’s departure and general state of staying very much woke, the rebuilding of DRose, the status of IT’s rehab, what the new starting lineups might resemble… and whether or not DWade will soon be rocking a newly designed Cavs jersey. Other topics strayed to the recent Melo trade to OKC, what the Cavs might (or might not) do with the Nets pick, and who will be left without a chair when the music stops at the end of training camp (the answer might sadly break up the Road Trippin’ Pod).
Brace yourselves… this is longer in the tooth than most, and full of plenty of senior moments for us mid-old-timers… (we may actually have to bring on some of those sponsors we mention at the top of the pod). Oh, and if you’re confused by the headline… it’s just an anagram for the Cavs’ own cajoled senõr… Jose Calderon.
Stay tuned after the long-winded pod for extra conversations about Grampa Tom’s travails at a Tribe game and Grampa Nate’s crash course in Millenial-speak…
As always, you can listen above, on Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts or Google Play.

Wade and Rose are basically redundant in every single way.
Which is fine as long as you don’t play them together.
I think they can play together in a short burst where the team is applying a full-court press or trapping defense to force quick turnovers. To Wade’s credit, he has learned to be a good cutter in playing alongside Lebron. DRose needs to learn the same skill.
The more I think about the basketball aspect of Wade signing, the more I worry. I don’t think he has much left. He can’t shoot. He isn’t a great defender. And we are going to be giving minutes to him instead of some combination of JR/Korver/Cedi/Jefferson — all of whom are either better shooters or better Defenders than him (and most are both).
For the long-run goal of making LBJ happy, and for the general star power, it’s fun that he signed. But I think he screws up the “space and D” identity that I was getting excited about.
yeah I’m not a huge fan of the Wade signing – but I suppose it adds some depth
If it keeps Bron happy, he’s a player I can certainly stomach. While he isn’t the player he used to be, he is still effective in short increments. He also has experience and is an incredibly hard worker. If we have to sign someone on the decline, he’s certainly a good option.
Same here. But I’d rather have him than DRose. Mostly because of his off court issue. I don’t know the truth but if it is.. can’t root for that im sorry.
Id package Rose, Shump, Calderon and all of the d-league level guys for someonelike Bledsoe once their availableby December.

I’m fine with disrespecting the flag, but desecrating a Dion jersey is a step too far.
Haha. Is that an old Dion jersey?
I’m predicting what the rotations would look like. *until maybe January or December 5, where we could trade Rose and Or Calderon plus some package for Bledsoe. Starting lineup Rose Wade James Love Thompson First sub Smith – Wade 2nd sub Love – Crowder, James as “four” 3rd sub Korver – Rose, James as “point guard” 2nd unit – Calderon Smith Korver Crowder Green Special “Lebron specialist” team Lebron Smith Korver Crowder Love Lebron-sits-down-so-we-need-to-score team Rose Wade Korver Crowder Love That’s 10 solid players who I think will get the huge chunk of every game. I think RJ and Channing… Read more »
Cedi is 13th?
Im not coach Lue :/
But I hope he gets a consistent spot. The rotation will likely have it’s shape around January (I hope earlier). Hopefully the real team is completed by then includingthe Jedi.
I just realized lots of our players are buddies, RJ & Channing, Lebron & Wade, Lebron & JR / TT, Kev & IT, IT & Jae.
The weirdest part of all this is that we’ll now have watched Shaq and Wade spend a season in Cleveland
….and the result no title and no lebron the following year….sad. hope this will not be the Miami curse
By the way, great pod as always, boys
I think we’ll be pleasantly surprised with Calderon… he’s a great shooter. Hopefully his legs haven’t completely left him.

Good god…
I hope the curse of the Kardashians only lasts one year! It was by far TT worst.
In 2010, they tried to get Wade, LeBron, and Rose in Chicago.
I feel like LBJ, Love, Lue etc purposely didnt mention Calderon when they were talking about the new guys on the team and incorporating them into the lineup on media day. Lue specifically mentioned Rose, Green, and IT but I dont remember hearing about Calderon.
I heard LBJ mention Calderon
Is DWade and Shump equal on defense at this point or is Shump better?
I would take DWade as a better “team defender” (higher basketball IQ, still can make the occasional block and quick hands). Definitely has lost a step for 1 on 1 defense, but I think Shump has been overrated for some time for his defense. Caveat with Wade is that his minutes should hover in the 20-25 per game range for peak effectiveness.
Agree. Im confused to which kind of player should we target in trading Shumpert since we already have Wade? Were loaded on the wings and point guards and I dont see any mobile big who could be effective in the style of play today..
You couldn’t take back a player unless you included Shump with another guaranteed contract.
Shump has the physical tools. Wade the mental ones. And probably the physical ones in short spurts.
Rockets, Thunder and a healthy Kawhi will provide tough tests to Warriors.
I hope they do. I hope the Thunder can learn how to share the ball and Kwahi stays healthy.
Lue better take a page from Pop’s book and have at least a 10-12 man rotation for the regular season. Stop with this 8 man crap….
I’ll believe that when I see it…
LOL… you get why I was venting, huh?!!
Plus we have too many guys who need to watch their minutes. We have 9 guys who are starter quality: James, Love, IT, Crowder, Rose, Wade, JR, TT, & Korver. But 4 of those need to watch their minutes (IT, Rose, Wade, Korver). Frye, Green, Shump, RJ, & Calderon can all capably play in spots. Osman & Zizic also good enough for spot minutes.
Exactly…. and I’d say that Frye with his shooting and Shump & Green with their athleticism should see consistent spot minutes. RJ and Calderon in garbage time and whenever they rest the big guns.
Starting unit:
Rose/IT
JR
Leb
Love
TT
Second unit:
Calderon/Rose
Wade/Korver/Green
Crowder/Shump
Frye
Ante
Man, we have a lot of able bodies.
Too many, we need to cut one. One nit to pick, Green is in no way a 2. He’s a combo forward: 6’9″ 230.
PG: IT, Rose, Calderon,
SG/SF: JR, Wade, Korver, Shump, Osman, Holland.
SF/PF: James, Crowder, Green, RJ
PF/C: Love, TT, Frye, Zizic
Outside of Zizic, Osman, & Holland, those are all made NBA guys. Sad that one will have to go. Didn’t include Felder, Tavares, Perk, or Williams.
For some reason I pictured Green in my head as a skinnier guy. Maybe cause I haven’t really cared to watch him since his Boston days.
Man, I completely forgot about Cedic and RJ. I think RJ and Holland go, along with the guys you mentioned. It would be phenomenal if someone took Shump off our hands. I also wouldn’t be upset to see RJ in some type of “trainer/coach” position like Damon Jones.
Holland is a two way contract so he does not count against our 15 man roster.
Kinda wish Wade would accept an Andre Igoudala-like role bench role. He and DRose should play 20 hard give-it-everything-I-got minutes every game.
I hope at this point in his career he would actually appreciate that. Hard to tell I guess. Its going to be hard moving JR to the bench.
I’d bet that’s roughly how it will work out, no matter who starts. Neither Wade nor Rose should be playing big minutes anymore.
In fact, put the those two together with IT, and you have enough healthy body parts for one starting point guard.
https://twitter.com/joevardon/status/912810948011970561
Aww, so now who’s going to smash Draymond Green’s ugly mug?
Ante Zizic?
Wade’s still got a good first step and some hops. Hopefully he’ll be healthy enough for 20 minutes a game in the playoffs

CB4 set to sign with Cavs as assistant coach next?
https://twitter.com/SpinDavies/status/912755057870983170
Oops, just realized “Cavs:TheTweets” had this retweeted
Gotta keep adding to the arsenal. Good for TT.
Absolutely. If he gets decent at it, it will be a huge plus. Outside shooting is about the only thing players often get better at as they get older.
https://twitter.com/EthanJSkolnick/status/550383001302208512
Funny but to be fair it was 3 years ago :)
Nice. Only question now is how we make room for him? Who goes? I would say RJ or Calderon. Outside shot of Shump if there is a trade. I don’t see another player who can cross-match on PGs to help cover for IT/Rose. Zizic & Osman are keepers, especially with James’ future uncertain. Frye is still our #3 big. Green is a Lue guy from Boston & a keeper/upgrade to RJ and 5-6 years younger. The other 8 guys are the core: James, Love, IT, Rose, JR, TT, Crowder, Korver. Wade makes a very strong front 9.

Listened to the first part, Tribe: the blog, and agree with EG, both Sale and Verlander have never faired well against the Tribe, even when the Tribe weren’t very good.

Calderon looks older than Steve Kerr in that photo.
I think he is.
Cavs roster is looking very interesting.
I hope we haven’t guaranteed Wade a starting spot. Rose + Wade + TT is going to create spacing issues.
Was thinking the same thing. But ultimately it doesn’t matter too much until the post season.
True. If IT is starting it works better. Could be looking at JR, Korver, Crowder, & Frye on the 2nd unit. No spacing issues there.
That lineup with LBJ at the point looks amazing…. also, if healthy IT cannot possibly get double teamed with that lineup.
Include me in th camp worried about Wade’s impact on spacing. I am still excited because it’s just fun to have this insane roster. But I think integrating Wade will be a long process.
It sounds like being able to start was part of Wade’s decision making process and I think I saw a report somewhere that the Cavs were okay with that. I bet he ultimately does, but is the first substitution so he can come back when Bron sits towards the end of the first quarter. Also, I’d take the under on him starting/playing in 60 games this year anyway. They’ll keep him fresh for the playoffs…
https://twitter.com/AmicoHoops/status/912734037915119616
It would be cool if he could tell us who/what these are…
Shump First, RJ Second, Frye Third…
I’d say RJ first, Calderon second. Shump has to be a trade.
Well, yeah. I just mean in order of cavalier preference. And yeah. Trade as mentioned above.
And we still have some shooting: 3PT%: Korver 45.1% led league (48.5% with Cavs); Frye 40.9%; Crowder 39.8; Thomas 37.9%; Love 37.3%; James 36.3%; JR 35.1%. If JR bounces back + a good year from Calderon or RJ would mean 8 guys who are threats.
For gits and shiggles:
PPG last season: IT 28.9; James 26.4; Love 19.0; Wade 18.3; Rose 18.0. 5 guys who averaged 18 ppg or more last year. Crowder at 13.9 and Korver at 10.1. 7 in double figures. Frye at 9.1 & Green at 9.2. Nine over 9 ppg. JR at 8.6 & TT at 8.1. 11 guys over 8 ppg.
Now, those numbers are going to drop for some guys, but we have a lot of guys who can contribute offensively. Man, we are deep. Shump is the 12th man. RJ may get cut.
They could always make a trade before the 10/16 deadline. Heck, maybe they go after Boogie, even though I would prefer not.
I am excited, but I don’t see how we play Rose and Wade together. Spacing would be terrible. And I am not sure Wade is better than JR as a pairing with LBJ.
Ultimately, I think Rose is big loser of Wade coming. Once IT is healthy, I think Rose gets few minutes.

Cavs have till October 16th to get down to 15 players.
Gonna be tricky. RJ or Calderon seem the most likely from an age standpoint. Though PG is thin & Felder would have to clear waivers. Could be looking at Rose + LeBron until IT is back. RJ played in the most games of any Cav last year. Shump from a positional/salary standpoint makes sense. Need a trade. Plus he is the only guy on the team who can guard 1-3.
We’ll look in camp to see how Kay looks. How Green looks. How Cedi looks. How ITs recovery goes. Hope it isn’t RJ but it may have to be.
What an irresponsible a**.

Or maybe he’s trolling us now…
Wonder if the pinheads who followed his lead will stay on the flat earth bandwagon now? Who cares, trolling is the entire national discourse now, YOLO, right?
Didn’t we know this already? I thought he was pretty clear about his point – he was trying to make a comment about the “fake news” and science denial during the presidential campaign (or was it just after the election?) Anyway, it was clumsily made, but that was the point.
Who knows…I don’t think Irving is smart enough to make that sort of meta point…I think he was trolling like an 8 year old…
The thing is, his explanation is less a statement on fake news and more point that people aren’t allowed to question science.
People can and do question science all the time. That is how science progresses. Usually total idiots do not get much response to their questions, because there are a lot of them, and who has time to rationally rebut them?
I think he simply is still just immature. That would explain a lot his behavior as opposed to him just being a strange eccentric guy.
Agree with John B.
