Live Thread: Cavs @ Rockets (#HoustonWeMightStillHaveAProblem)
2017-11-09Tom Hanks is a great actor. He’s been in a lot of movies… many of which he’s been able to save with his performances. Likewise, LeBron James is a great basketball player. He’s been on a lot of teams… many of which he’s been able to save with his performances. Yet, there are always the rare cases when no matter the efforts of one man, great though he may be at his craft, can elevate the supporting cast enough to produce an entertaining or satisfying outcome.
This is to say that, despite the two wins in the past three games by the Cavs to bring some sense of stability to this rocky early ride, the challenges standing in the way of a safe landing at the top of the Eastern Conference still loom large. It took 87 points from LeBron in those two contests (with also possibly Kevin Love’s best game as a Cav in the second one) to navigate the team to victory. And, it’s not like they gave up any less points to the opposition (122 and 119 respectively), while also dropping a clunker that appeared much closer than it was to the lowly Hawks in between.
The obvious issue is defensive. The Cavs have burned points to their opponents like rocket fuel, and when they’re not hitting on all offensive cylinders themselves… it can get ugly in a hurry. Speaking of Rocket fuel, Cleveland arrives in Houston to face possibly their biggest challenge to date in James Harden and his skyrocketing mates. The Rockets are 8-3 to start the young season, doing it mainly without the services of newly acquired banana boat buddy, Chris Paul. Oddly, both teams average the same 109.9 points per game, yet Houston is also giving up 10 points less per game defensively. They still shoot the lights out from the perimeter (a sore spot for the Cavs so far), and are coming off a 137 point performance against one of the stingiest defenses in the League against Utah. And, oh by the way, Harden almost matched LeBron’s season high with 56 of his own in that one.
So, the question will be whether or not the Cavs can do enough to slow down the Rockets from deep, while doing their best to fire off their own shots. Derrick Rose will sit this one out with a sore ankle, and Iman Shumpert takes his place in the starting unit. Not sure if that’s good or bad news. The best news, though, is that this is another nationally televised game… and the Cavs usually fare pretty well in those.
Catch all the action starting at 8pm EST on TNT, and don’t forget to chime in here… Let us know if you think the Cavs will prevail or if we’ve got a problem in Houston.
Finally got to watch the second half. A much better performance than I felt they might put up. 1 min to go, 1 pt down, loose ball on the floor: Houston got it, then a dunk/foul, 4 pts up. We get that loose ball, the game could have been ours. It was right there. Not happy we lost, but this manner of loss does not upset me. Good signs that some players are starting to play their role appropriately.
This game will probably get Jeff Green a $14 mill contract from someone next year…
Still something like 5 and 1 in national TV games.
Harden alone had 14 free throws, exactly the same number the entire Cavs had.
Bron only had 3 including the technical free throw he took.
Im fine with this game. Lose close one on the road agaisnt second best team in the west.
But Korver needs more minutes – take em from Jae or Love in this game
Not sure that would have helped with rebounding. Heck Green played 38 minutes and was only able to collect 5 boards. Love was only able to collect 6 in 29. We were overmatched physically on long bounds. Tt would likely have helped in that department, but he has been such a non-factor offensively.
Overall though, they competed and had about as much energy as I think this team is capable of outside the playoffs, so moral victory?
Love not showing up hurt the Cavs…Green tried to replace him but Cavs needed a third wheel and couldn’t get it from anyone but Love had to be the one….officiating was beyond ridiculous for this game and hurts the league than resting players….interesting that Silver is worried more about the latter. Not sure if having Rose play tonight would have been any different. Shump seemed to play okay, but didn’t bring much offensively. JR is okay but he just flops around too much trying to get calls….Crowder looks lost lately…thought Frye would get more minutes along with Korver….taking some better… Read more »
Harden and Gordon would have torched rose. Love got out muscled and was overmatched in length. Crowder is a problem, but Frye likely would have gotten even more feasted on the defensive end than love. TT may have helped on d and hurt on offense.
Thank god Rose was out for this one…
For sure
You’re dead wrong on love. He was fine. Just is physically out matched by capella and absolutely boned by the refs. Still scored 17 and was +1. How about Wade’s -21?
outmatched by a guy barely anyone knows unless one really follows the league….he was just abused and would trust him to step up more than Wade…it was a bad game by him….dont know how I’m dead wrong….guy was abused on boards and not scoring points when needed….lucky for jeff green to step up or this was a 20 point loss easy….and finally those +/- are goofy statistics that have been proven to not accurately portray impact from a player….fact is love struggled tonite and he needed to step up
Capella has been incredible for the rockets. Objective fact. He is a beast in his role. Espn just had an article about how crucial he is for them. Really has been crucial since last year, except now he can hit free throws.
Time is not on my side, no it isn’t.
Time is not on my side, no it isn’t.
They completed the whole game. Maybe fatigued in the second half, which is just going to happen with this team, unavoidable. Not quick, long, athletic, or focused enough to boards. Couldn’t physically keep harden from getting two or three steps on the initial first move by which point it was too too late.
Still they made it competitive. Not great officiating, but being a step behind will do that.

effort on rebounding wasn’t there….again rockets played hard and wanted it and Cavs don’t want it right now…still not sure Rockets can beat Warriors in West…blowing multiple big leads tonight is worrisome on their end.
Would help maybe if TT was back, bit then he would likely be a negative on offense. Capella feasted.
definitely would have helped….i wouldn’t had mind seeing Frye more to bang the boards for few minutes…Lue had him out there for hot second and that was it
Uh. Except for first quarter. It was not a. Complete effort.
Not sure this team can physically play with the kind of effort you desire for 48 mintues then.
lack of effort late in game, especially rebounds…but effort has been the theme so far this year….still good game….felt Lebron played very weird and had careless TOs….Love was just abused tonite and thankfully fouled out….props to Jeff Green for a great game….who knows when we will see next one….just not enough consistency from this team and don’t really trust all players yet, but over time think this team will get it together
Gassed. Old
I’m sorry but Jae Crowder cannot be on the court over Korver in the last few minutes of a tight game. He couldn’t rebound, couldn’t defend, doesn’t shoot, and doesn’t cut. How was he on the court when are down 3 and 4 points and need shooting??
Crowder has been lousy. He may get better. He’s not a great player, just a decent player on a cheap contract. And I have been saying that for years, not just now.
Yeah. That is what I was afraid of this off-season. He is good being used a certain way with certain personnel but has looked pedestrian with us. His mom’s passing may be really affecting him, which is understandable.
Cavs lost that game in the early fourth by not pulling out Love and not being able to. Rebound. . Could’ve desperately used Zizic.
I don’t think Zizic is ready for a game like that…he doesn’t look like he can defend a PnR…at all…
Could he have helped keep Capella off the boards?
Maybe…who knows…
Good effort, but still gave up too many points, and were destroyed on the boards…
No glass work. A tad more hustle & effort on the glass & we win.
The Rockets got a lot of long, lucky rebounds.
Cavs gonna regret losing to crappy teams early in the season.
Yep.
Much better outcome than I expected to be honest… Houston always a tough place for Cavs to play… Held them to 20 points in the fourth…
They completed at least.
Cannot win when you get annihilated on thd boards…it’s like men against boys…
Argh. Tough play. Could’ve used Zizic tonight
17 offensive rebounds for Houston. Pathetic
Death by ORB
I’m blaming this loss on the officiating. The NBA has a problem with really poor officiating.
We are very bad at rebounding and defense
Defense has actually been a lot better for stretches this game… no TT, Love fouls out and Houston allowed to just mug people inside…
For sure. We still couldn’t stop intial penetration though. Part of the rebounding was the rockets spacing and us not being quick or long enough to collect long boards. Capella pummeled ism
F@#K get a REBOUND!
Doesn’t matter if you play good D if you don’t box out… JEEEZ
Harden just shoving Green to the floor… no call
OF course.
A stop they have s hot
Same applies
Rebounding killed it for us
Every time… Ariza can’t stop that move…
Terrible decision by lbj
Lucky no offensive.
It’s off the Rockets!
Well… that’s a sh**ty way to end this…
Just brutal…
These refs are pathetic!
Would love to have Capella
Get on the doggone floor Shump
Ugh!
Green with a game/shot of his career.
GREEN!!!
The Green Machine!
Still a chance without hero ball.
THERE’S the Capela I know and love!
39-19 boards for Rockets…
That’s it for Kev… ball don’t lie tho
How many steps??
4?
Love has fouled out.

Down 3
Love bails out horrific hero ball possession.
https://twitter.com/KellyScaletta/status/928826482016833536
Nobody anywhere near the paint on offense…
Down 7. This is a game where we really needed Love to step up. Other than the first 3 minutes, has hasn’t done much. Crowder either.
You mean down 4
Gonna need a few more stops…
These refs are such suckers…
Good sell job by JR…
