Podcap: Milwaukee 119, Cleveland 116 (or, “One too Many Possessions”)
2017-12-20https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/episode-155-one-too-many-possessions
Cleveland fell to the Bucks Tuesday in a thrilling game that saw Cleveland come back from a 20 point deficit in the late third to take a two point lead with 5:11 to go in the fourth quarter. All of this was done without the aid of LeBron Raymone James, as he sat for the entirety of the Cavs’ 24-2 comeback. The Cavaliers surge was keyed by Jeff Green’s nine second half points, seven of which came at the free throw as a direct result of attacking the basket in transition. Also key: Dwyane Wade’s 3-5 three point barrage online the the final quarter, including a personal 6-0 run on consecutive pull-up treys to give the Cavs their first lead of the fourth.
Despite the comeback, Ty Lue left his gassed bench in one too many possessions, and a Malcom Brogdon three gave the Bucks the lead again. LeBron’s heroics which included a filthy stepback trey and an and-1 to tie and later regain the lead, but a transition triple by Tony Snell put the Bucks up by two. After a wide open Korver miss, the Cavs almost got a loose ball, but James lost it between his legs and the Freak picked it up (see title pic) before a making game sealing layup.
With 5.3 seconds left, and down five LeBron still gave himself a miracle opportunity to tie by passing to himself off Antetokounmpo’s back then draining a three. The king ran out of miracles when he missed a 90-footer to tie after a Milwaukee free throw miss.

Nate and EG hopped in the podcast booth after this wild game to podcap about what worked for the Cavs, what didn’t, and why we didn’t feel too bad about this loss. Kevin Love’s fourth quarter absence seemed odd to both of us given his 21-10 line in just 30 minute. Couldn’t he have improves the Cavs’ rebounding, and been an improvement over Jae Crowder’s 0-5 brickfest from behind the arc? We marveled, though, at LeBron’s superior shooting (6-11 from three), Kyle Korver’s tough night (1-7 from the floor), and Jeff Green’s rim running relentlessness. We lamented the painful officiating that gave the Bucks a minimum of six undeserved points, and saw the Cavs repeatedly pummeled without consequences.
Beyond the game, we, discussed the triple-double-esque MVP tear LeBron is on, the Kobe Retirement, the idle threat of the Laker recruiting, LeBron’s ridiculous blocks, and the Cavs schedule going forward. We also talked about what TT means to this team, whether he should be playing over Frye, and how he affects the chemistry of the Cavs’ second unit. We talked about the possibility of trading for Paul George, what we should name the Brooklyn pick, and wished everyone a Happy Holidays.
Finally, we gave an appropriate spoiler alert and spent a good ten minutes reviewing The Last Jedi. Only one of us came off as a cranky old man.
As always, you can listen above, on on Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts or Google Play.
This brings a smile to my face. He is what he is despite the boy-genius coach

They can enjoy every last second of Fly-paper Kyrie.
Vardon reports IT to practice with the Charge in Independence today. He needs practice & the Cavs don’t practice much. Getting close!!!!

BTW, only 2 games in TNN tonight. We host the Bulls, and the Grizz visit the Suns (somebody has to win).
Star Wars is good. Has some flaws, (I didn’t care for the Mary Poppins thing), but this one is a little more complex in terms of good & evil. Dug it. Solid 7.5/10. Rogue One was better, but that was the best one since Empire. Still hate the lack of explanation on virtually everything. For me:
1. Empire, 2. A New Hope, 3. Rogue One, 4. Force Awakens, 5. Last Jedi, 6. Return of the Jedi; 7. Sith, 8. Clone Wars, 9. Whatever episode 1 was called.
Episode 1 is Phantom Menace btw.
Agree with most of this list. I may swap 3 and 4.
During the past few years, those that have won on Xmas (btw Cle and GS), have lost in the finals.
good job Jason—was thinking the same—a good night for the cavs—and when the celts lost to the heat –that made my night —-the longer the losing streak by the nets / and tough schedule the less confidence / motivation they will play with —top 5 pick is still a possibility —think trae young (Oklahoma )- looks like a young curry could move up in the draft
I like Trae Young too. I think Bagley and Ayton will slip because they don’t defend well and their offensive skills don’t work in the new NBA. Ayton might be able to make it work but Bagley I think is doubtful.
guys…really…Star wars will never be what it was in 1977. We need Star Wars to matter now. The movie was a bit silly, a bit nostalgic, a bit too disney, and a bit too thor ragnarok…but honestly if you didn’t go into it with super high expectations, it was just fun. it was a fun star wars movie. there’s no way for Rian to please the fans that want star wars and the fans that want something different from star wars. Please try to make a movie that is precious to 40 year olds but also appeals to 15 year… Read more »
That’s just it though… it wasn’t that much fun…
I had plenty of fun!
Oh, so now watching Mark Hamill milk a manatee isn’t fun??
+1
I thought it was average. The old movies built a feeling of Mythos whereas these movies are just cash cows with contrived story.
I haven’t seen the newest version, but I’ve enjoyed the previous two (which includes Rogue One).
EG…you are from L.A….how are you not paying attention to Kuzma’s ability to transcend? Honestly…he can improve his defense (which already isn’t bad)…and he is Ingram’s worst nightmare contract wise. Kuzma is the real deal. Ball and Ingram and the rest of their teammates are filler right now…George would help them but not in the same way that a truly transcendent player would, i guess…but seriously…Kuzma is a #1 player on a contender within two or three years. honestly…he is that good.
Good timing with Kuzma’s breakout game last night… I gave him credit as a scorer, but yes being in LA I do watch a lot of Lakers basketball and he is not a good defensive player. Granted, he’s a rookie, and can certainly improve on that level, but I don’t believe he’s as good as you think he is. It’s always possible he turns into a Harden type star, but there’s a ways to go for that…
To be fair, EG, this is Kuzma’s fourth or fifth “breakout” game. He is currently the only rook close to Simmons for ROtY right now
Mitchell is perhaps 2nd best rookie followed by Tatum and Kuz.
Yeah, you must not be watching Donovan Mitchell…
Yes, scoring wise… On defense, he has a -2.77 DRPM… good for 449th place, just ahead of D’Aaron Fox, Lou Williams, Jamal Crawford, Denis Schroder and Emanuel Mudiay… Not good…
Donavan Mitchell had 41 last wing and has about 10 games with over 20 points and a handful of 30s. He is better than Kuzma.
And, I’m not from LA… I’m from Ohio, I just live out here now…
so…nate…you are absolutely right in that TT’s contract is an albatross that must be tried. because if he doesn’t make sense you have to trade him, and if he does make sense you have to play him. but you are incredibly wrong in that Channing Frye makes Korver twice as dangerous, and also in that Channing Frye makes the floor more spacious (i know you said this…and i know it’s just one game…). Channing has shown in the past 20+ games that he can roll as well as TT, and we haven’t suffered on defense. Channing Frye is twice as… Read more »
Anonymous do you really want to be “anonymous” or did you just forger to fill in your name/e-mail?
The current Cavs have way more guys who can play major minutes than usual. A big part of the regular season, particularly the first half, if figuring out what combinations work. I would guess that it is not that TT has replaced CF, but that they are trying to figure out how to use TT.
Harden gets Wade/Iverson level calls at their peak but can’t finish through the same amount of contact on the calls that were actual fouls. I always disliked Iverson’s game, but if he played today, he would likely put out the same efficiency Harden does. So much less contact for guards on the interior today. What is called today wouldn’t be considered a foul 50% of the time prior to around 2012.
Then why haven’t free throws increased proportionally? Even when considering that 2 point shots are a lower share of overall shots, FT attempts per 2 point shot have remained steady.

Because they allow post players to get mauled and guys take a TON more jumpers.
This.
One last bit of good Nets pick news: of their next 22 games (thru Jan), only 4 are against teams with losing records: 12/27 at NO, 1/1 vs Magic, 1/12 at Atl, 1/31 vs Philly. Ouch.
In other good Nets pick news: Doncic is leading the Spanish league in scoring (last I saw). Ayton’s offense looks legit. Bagley has been productive. Porter’s prognosis is good. And Bamba is still absurdly mobile with a 7’9″ wingspan. Down a notch, at PG Sexton almost won a game 3 v 5. Trae Young just tied the NCAA record with 22 assists. On the wing, Mikal Bridges is legit 3 & D. Khyri Thomas not too shabby either. Up front, Jackson Jr is a rim protector extreme who hit hitting 80% from the line. We could get a player with… Read more »
My hope was to catch Boston (in the loss column) by New Year’s. May have to beat the Dubs to do it. Raps playing real well.
Raps perhaps had league’s toughest schedule. They also changed their offense this year, they are more fun to watch this year. Cavs will go as far as Lebron can take them, but I think Raps may prove to be better team than Celts by end of the year.
btw, dubs are more beatable with Curry NOT playing on 25th.
Shaping up as a good night for the Nets pick. Nets loose at home to the Kings, who were on a b2b. Bulls won their 7th in a row over Orlando. The friggin’ Lakers won in Houston. Dallas won vs Detroit. And someone has to win the Suns/Clippers game. And for desert, Boston lost at home to Miami. Didn’t bat 100%, Hawks lost to Pacers & Charlotte got drilled by the raps. Grizz seem unlikely to win at GSW. Wins: 7 = Hawks 9 = Mavs, Grizz (at GSW) 10 = Bulls 11 = Magic, Hornets, Kings, Nets, Lakers, Suns/Clips… Read more »
Good recap, as usual.
Heat’s just got Boston’s number I guess… Wonder why President Genius can’t figure them out?
Olynyk screwed president Stevens. How enjoyable.
Kings up 17 in Brooklyn at half despite playing last night. Hawks down 2 at half hosting Indy. Bees getting crushed by Toronto.
Agree on a point below about Bucks playing an incredible game. I mean they had multiple guys having career nights. Cavs messed around too much in 2nd quarter, otherwise that comeback wins the game. Crowder is a hot mess and Korver has been inconsistent lately. Im not expecting him to hit 4 threes a game, but it appears if he can’t hit a shot, he’s useless offensively. Surprised by Love not being put in with Lebron but I don’t think that hurt Cavs as much. they had their chances, but Bucks hit the shots and Cavs didn’t. On to the… Read more »
Korver is useless offensively?
Who da thunk it? Good thing LeBron hasn’t heard.
Leo, isn’t it the same for any player? Meaning if they don’t hit shots, they are useless offensively.
Korver is a supreme one trick pony….I really haven’t seen him cut many times to basket or attempt to short many mid-rangers, maybe not much of his game, but its non existent, and he really attempts to run over screens to get open looks. Again he is incredible with that, but when it doesn’t work or goes horrible like last night, there is nothing else you can count on from him offensively. Is what it is. Fortunately we have only seen him struggle like 2-3x this year.
Korver cuts all the time. Have you been awake? Yeesh.
Korver draws so much attention even when he misses like last night. Helps greatly with spacing and that is certainly not useless
That is the key point. KK disrupts a defense without taking a shot.
The ESPN guys were discussing a Woj article about how quickly Boogie poisoned the Pels. Apparently the first thing he did was convince the players they didn’t have to go to practice. He sounds like a guy that could ruin any team.
To me the Bucks played an incredible game, way out of character IMO and still the Cavs got a chance at the end. I’ll take the L with not much complaints.
Oh, and I am already over my no questioning Lue pledge. Love should have come back at the end.
Your persistence was admirable while it lasted….
TT didn’t play badly. And he was a part of that 24-2 run. He also was a part of that putrid 2nd quarter.
The problem is that he gums things up offensively. Wade-Green–TT + Osman/Crowder is going to struggle, even with Korver out there.
Now, with Calderon or IT running the show, more possibilities for TT to fit better.
I was at the game. For the middle half of the game was really starting to question why I spend money on the Cavs. Then fortunately they made the run and we got our money’s worth
Agreed it’s complicated because Korver couldn’t get free AT ALL without Frye on the court but then you can’t argue with 24-2.
At the end of the day it just felt like one of those games where we made 12 stupid mistakes and we could have won had we only made 10.
Bledsoe looks real good on the Bucks. The guy is a bulldog. He’s the type of player I was hoping Dion would have turned into on the Cavs. Here’s hoping the Cavs don’t face them in the playoffs.
I definitely wish we could have gotten Bledsoe.
The Cavs would beat them in 5.
i cant listen to this, but what is your take on TT? im not sure he’s playing very well out there
They generally agreed with Lue’s decision to play him over Frye and that TT wasn’t part of the loss from yesterday. While I kind of agree that he didn’t really hurt us out there, not having Frye in the lineup I felt prevented us from getting into the same rhythms they’ve been in lately. Korver couldn’t get free at all all night long, having Frye set those screens for KK is a deadly combination that we didn’t have last night. The point that they went back to was that the group Lue went with went on a 24-2 run, so… Read more »
I think he just came off the IR. Can you give him a break for a week or so?
problem was he was trash before IR. and no shots for korver I think is because no one has to cover TT. same when he was with starters clogging the lane and all we could get was long jumpers. but we’ll see – im down on him but not out yet
I agree that, in hindsight, LBJ should have come back into the game on the prior possession. It might surprise people to know that Skip disagrees…
https://twitter.com/RealSkipBayless/status/943323432971726850
Technically he made a three point play the old way the shot after the three I believe. So he missed the next two threes after scoring six straight in the final 2:00.
Real skip is the clown of clowns though. So no surprise. Because LBJ was hyped beyond any player in history coming out of high school and crowned the next Jordan before he played a game, the real dunce skip has always hated the guy. ‘Kobe Bean (get off felony rape charge) Bryant for life,’ is dum dum Skip’s motto. He can ride that Kobe love into the sunset, along with his garbage reputation as a know nothing sports columnist.
Skip making a fool of himself? Very unusual…
I think most people at this point know how much of a clown/troll hybrid this guy is. But he was able to parlay this act to $5mm/yr. Its a sad sign of the times where talentless fools like him make millions.
LeBron appears to agree with staying on the bench to avoid breaking momentum: http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2017/12/lebron_james_calls_tyronn_lues.html#incart_2box
