Recap: Cavs 115, Bulls 112 (or, It Don’t Matter… It Don’t Matter!)

Hot opponent on a seven game win streak? It don’t matter. Starting shooting guard a late scratch? It don’t matter. Head coach too sick to be on the sidelines? It don’t matter. Twenty-six lead changes? Giving up a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter? One point lead with 14 seconds left? It don’t matter… it don’t matter… IT DON’T MATTER!
Lucky for us… LeBron James was mic-ed up tonight during Cleveland’s victory over the Chicago… otherwise, how would we have known the moment it was all over for the Bulls… or to what lengths the King would go to find some candy for his little princess Zhuri…
A leader on and off the court.

And, though the game didn’t seem as easy as finding candy for a baby… LeBron made sure that nothing the stampeding Bulls did ultimately mattered with a game high 34 points, nine assists, six boards and three steals. He punctuated his performance with 11 of those points in the fourth quarter, including the above referenced fadeaway jumper with Kris Dunn guarding him like a second shirt.
Still, you had to wonder going into this one if it was a game that mattered much to the Cavs. Sure, the Bulls were on a roll, having won their last seven in a row and looking nothing like a previously 3-20 team while doing it, while the Cavs were possibly already looking ahead to their Christmas Day rematch with the Golden State Warriors. It could have easily been a game where the wine & gold had already checked out for the holidays and mailed in a clunker to the young Bulls. To add to the potential for what Nate likes to call a “sandwich game” was the late scratch of JR Smith due to knee soreness, and Ty Lue being unable to coach due to illness. But, that’s not what happened…
Assistant coach Larry Drew took over for Ty who was down with the Lue Flu, and decided to insert Channing Frye into the starting lineup for the ailing JR. That meant a super-sized starting five with no true shooting guard on the floor (LeBron or Jae Crowder would be the closest thing I guess). It worked for a little while… at least until Robin Lopez and Lauri Markkanen started to get going. However, you can’t blame Drew for playing the percentages. See, the most interesting stat of the night (which I heard post-game) is that the Cavs are 16-1 when Channing plays 11+ minutes… and just 8-8 when he doesn’t.
The first three quarters were essentially a see-saw battle of two hot-shooting teams (both were up over 50% for the game) who seemed to think that defense… well, it don’t matter. The aforementioned 26 lead changes were the second most in an NBA game this season apparently, and neither team could get much separation. The Cavs briefly had an eight point lead in the second quarter, and the Bulls led by as much as five in the third, but both teams always seemed to shoot their way back to even. Markkanen (25 points) and Denzel Valentine (18 points) paced a balanced Bulls attack, which was countered by the firepower of LeBron and Kevin Love (27 points on 9-15 shooting). The benches also mostly canceled each other out (40-37 in favor of the Cavs), with Nikola Mirotic and Kyle Korver sporting matching 15 point efforts… although the three point disparity was ironically the final margin.
The game really came down to the fourth quarter… although, technically both teams deadlocked at 33 points a piece for the period. So, actually, you have to go back to the end of the third and Jeff Green’s heroics. With the Cavs trailing 80-79, Uncle Jeff grabbed a rebound, drove down the court and got fouled by Mirotic. He sank both free throws, then helped force a shot clock turnover by the Bulls with :04 left in the quarter. That was all the Green Machine needed to catch the inbounds pass and calmly drain a 21 footer to beat the buzzer to put the Cavs up 82-79 (providing the ultimate final margin).
STEP BACK, BABY!@unclejeffgreen's buzzer-beater gives the @cavs an 82-79 lead heading into the 4th.

That four point run by Green spurred a 7-0 start to the final quarter by the Cavs, and it looked like they’d be able to dispatch the Bulls fairly quickly and get onto their holiday season… especially with Dwayne Wade playing some vintage defense (three steals, two blocks) and Kyle Korver channeling his inner Kenny Powers. However, Mirotic and Markkanen led the charge as the Bulls closed the gap and even took the lead back. That’s when Coach Drew did what Coach Lue didn’t the previous game, and re-inserted Kevin Love who scored seven points in the fourth, including five in a row to give the Cavs a seven point lead. The Bulls kept firing away though, with Markkanen draining a banana in the tailpipe four point play to keep it close. LeBron’s insane turnaround should have shown the Bulls that it didn’t don’t matter, but a Mirotic three and a defensive breakdown by Tristan Thompson to allow a wide open Valentine layup, pulled Chicago within one at 113-112. It truly didn’t matter though after LBJ cooly sank two clutch free throws, and Wade led one final defensive stop.
The Evil
The Cavs toyed around with the Bulls for most of this game, rarely exerting much energy on defense. The exception was a burst at the end of the third and early fourth quarters when DWade, Jeff Green and Kyle Korver brought some hustle and flow (there was also a solid Cedi Osman steal in the second quarter). Overall, the Cavs allowed the Bulls to shoot 55% from the field and 39% from deep. They also didn’t exactly make Chicago “feel” them with only eight free throws, and they didn’t have much of an answer for the M&M (Markkanen and Mirotic) boys for much of the night.
Wade got a little three happy following his 4-6 foray against the Bucks in the previous game. He was 0-3 and just 5-12 for the game from the field… although, to be fair, with JR out he was often the only other shooter on the floor besides Korver.
JR Smith was a very late scratch with a sore knee. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious. Ty Lue sounded like he was feeling better after the game, so it doesn’t sound like the coach will miss any further time.
The Bulls had their seven game win streak halted, which on one hand is a good thing since the Cavs get the win, but on the other hand… it’s a small step back for the value of the Nets pick.
Oh, and I’m just going to leave this here for any NBA officials who might be reading…
The Genius
Another efficient night from LeBron. He shot 12-23, was 2-5 from downtown and a perfect 8-8 from the line. If you think the MVP don’t matter to him… think again. Oh yeah, he also played in his 800th game for the franchise tonight.
Kevin Love was equally awesome, scoring his 27 points in just 29 minutes on just 15 shots. The big man also grabbed seven boards and gave the team a big lift in the fourth quarter (see what he can do when he plays late?).
The bench was terrific again, topping 40 points for the 22nd game this year already. Korver bounced back from his rough outing against the Bucks to shoot 5-7 (4-6 from deep) for 15 points. Jeff Green also was key with 10 points, four boards and some solid defense. And, Wade despite a sub-par shooting night, had his hands everywhere in the late third/early fourth, tipping and stripping the ball away from the Bulls. He also pulled this awesome move early in the game against Robin Lopez…
Dwayne Wade faked Robin Lopez and both laugh after about it. pic.twitter.com/GF2qxDbHHk

Jose Calderon had another good game with eight points and five assists with no turnovers. He hit two threes and also threw a sick alley oop to LeBron.
Kudos to Assistant Coach Drew for not only stepping in for an ailing Coach Lue, but also for starting Frye and playing Kev in the fourth quarter.
Parting Shot
It don’t matter (but it kind of does).
Though he’s not supposed to be available for the Christmas Day tilt against the Warriors, Isaiah Thomas had an eventful day. First, he went through a 5-on-5 practice with a little help from the Canton Charge, who were brought up to the practice courts in Independence. Then, the Cavs “recalled” him to the team in time for him to suit up for the first time this year and go through pre-game warmups. So, what time is it? Almost time for IT…
Great to see @isaiahthomas take the floor with his @cavs teammates! #ThatSLOWgrind pic.twitter.com/UOPXBaP20f

Sure you can IT… but it don’t matter… as long as you’re ready to go come April.
Merry Christmas… and GO CAVS!
so he would be the “2nd coming of the orange mamba “–correct ( mike james )
True!
Also, the original Orange Mamba, Jordan McRae himself, is collecting DNPs in the Euroleague and not in some powerhouse either, but in Baskonia a run-of-the-mill team.
Really happy I’n not watching Orange Mamba play basketball this season…
I believed in Orange Mamba. I thought he would be a star in the Euroleague and I picked him up for my Euroleague fantasy team. Suffice to say, that was fantasy money terribly spent.
Should the front office be looking into Mike James from for Suns? I have no idea how the contracts would work , just thinking of a replacement for Rose.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/21851676/mike-james-waived-phoenix-suns-two-weeks-signing-contract
Please no. He played in Greece last season, so I know him quite well. He is an athletic, scoring guard who needs the ball in his hands to be somewhat effective. He doesn’t have good size, he is not a good defender and he is not a natural passer. In short, he is a worse version of Rose with a somewhat better shot. He belongs in the Euroleague.
Gotcha. Glad to have a solid scouting report ;)
Glad to be of service!
Well, the West is starting to look at is should with Houston losing two in a row. D’Antoni playing 8 guys tires them out and if a guy goes down for a couple games, the replacement is out of synch.
OKC is up to 5th. NO sits 8th. Would love for GSW to have to go thru AD/Boogie/playoff Rondo in Round 1. Pissed off Russ hell bent on revenge in Round 2. And pissed of Spurs hell bent on revenge in the WCF (or the Rockets).
wonder if the wiz keep “spiraling ” downward if they won’t be in trade / sell mode—-wouldn’t mind going after Beal
Lay off the egg nog
Yeah but think of how many times over the last few years that would have also been an appropriate response “Cavs could get LeBron and Kevin Love”. “Cavs could come back from 3-1″…”Delly could have a finals Podium Game”
Ha. Anything can happen, true. Wiz are in a hopeless spot but rebuilding now doesn’t make much sense. Don’t know what Wall or Beal’s contract situations are, but until one of those two makes it clear they are done, you have to ride it out.
NBA is frustrating league to be honest. Not much room at the top. Your examples point to the myriad of improbabilities you have to count on happening for a team like the Cavs just to have a shot.
I hate the Wiz. They get crushed by the Nets. Clips somehow win in Houston. Everyone else lost, though the Hawks (OKC), Hornets (Bucks), and Lakers (Dubs) all put up good fights. Wins:
7 = Hawks
9 = Grizz, Mavs
10 = Bulls
11 = Magic, Hornets, Kings, Lakers
12 = Suns, Nets
13 = Clippers
Tonight:
Nets at Pacers
Bucks at Hornets
Magic at Wizards
Mavs at Hawks
Bulls at Celtics
Clippers at Grizzlies
Wolves at Suns
Blazers at Lakers (no Lillard)
Spurs at Kings
Clippers beat the Rockets off of Austin freaking Rivers 36 points? And the Turd had 51? Wtf?
ANTE with 25 pts/ 13 rebounds in 28 minutes for the charge PERRANTES with 13 assists —-think if I had to choose right now I would take Perrantes over DRose
i love your endless enthusiasm for G league heroes :)
God, the Wizards are useless. They are the most all hat, no cattle group in the NBA in decades.
They have lost twice to the Nets in the last couple weeks.
MERRY CHRISTMAS KYRIE——SCROOGE / BAH HUMBUG ——I LISTEN TO KYRIE AND THEN I LISTEN TO AN ULTIMATE /POSITIVE I.T.—YES GLAD THAT I.T. WILL BE OUR STARTING PT GD
Think it is another desperate cry for attention that just makes him look like a reindeer’s rump.
He does wear green and has a tiny heart, sooooo
https://twitter.com/SInow/status/944067641521688576
I don’t really necessarily think of Kyrie as a moron and a buffoon. Oh wait, yes, I do!
he’s just “woke” Nate, remember?
Woke af….
This isn’t that outrageous. The flat earth stuff is much worse.
Did we ever know Kyrie at all? Who is he? I don’t get this. Last year, Kyrie on tape in front of millions flashed a bright smile and wished us all a “Merry Christmas” after Cavs beat the Warriors. He was truly happy. We all expressed Merry Christmas back to him on twitter and at the Q. So…. acknowledging/ saying Christmas wishes is based on what…… exactly 1 year later now?
Is this the year the Raptors actually cause us problems in the playoffs? Or have we seen this script before?
im lookking forward to playing them and seeing what they’re about
Same here. I want to win all the way to the trophy but I want the best competition along the journey too. If Raps is one of them then let’s go.
Did you read in ESPN yhat the refs union and NBA players assoc. are getting together to start hashing things out? http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/21837148/nba-referee-association-players-union-discuss-growing-court-tensions
Oh man – I may rant about this in my next podcast.
‘durant has been ejected 3 times this season’ . lol what a blowhard pxxsy. yet they still let braymond get away with anything.
i think im with the zebras on this one; thats a tough job dealing with hypercompetitive multimillionaires – they should not have to ‘respect’ them by engaging in arguments after every call. they dont get all the calls right, but i think their authority needs to be absolute
Yeah, it’s truly ridiculous the arguing after almost literally any contact. And both sides will argue for the call when none is made. Just play the damn game.
highlight of the game was LeBron who was ( wired up ) was asking coaches for gum for his daughter—the sheepish look on the coaches faces when they had to say / nod their head no they didn’t have any candy—–you can bet in the future every assistant coach will have candy in their pockets ——-jedi played a little conservative / timid last night in my opinion ( saw most of the game on recap )—-still somewhat concerned with crowder’s production ( or lack of )—otherwise good win—3 days rest / ready for Christmas with the dubs
Last thought: team games played as of this afternoon:
35 = Boston
34 = Phoenix
33 = Cleveland, San Antonio, Utah
Our schedule as been easy from a W/L standpoint, but it has been busy. Considering all the new pieces, lack of practice time, and injuries, I think we are in a good spot as IT’s return looms.
ASG voting is open. Too bad the current generation has made a mockery of the game. FWIW I voted thusly: EAST: Irving, DeRozan; James, Antetokounmpo, Love. 3 easy ones James, Giannis, Ky). I view Oladipo/DeRozan as a toss up. At the moment, Embiid has missed too many games & Philly is not a PO team so I went with Love. WEST: Harden, Curry, Durant, Aldridge, Davis. Harden & Durant have to start. So does Curry, though if he misses a lot more time I could go with Butler. Aldridge gets a ton of credit for the Spurs excelling without Kawhi,… Read more »
I don’t care about the ASG at all, I never watch it, but your starters look legit to me. Love definitely deserves it…wonder if he’ll get it.
You’re assuming the Zinger wont get in with the NYC vote
Sinewy. Zinger over love.
After that 0-11 last night? Nah. Zinger goes, but not a starter in my book.
Yeah, I don’t know how you put Zinger in over Love… Kev is better in almost every statistical category other than scoring…

Once they amnesty Noah and get another wing, Knicks are gonna be a top four team next year and a holy freaking terror.
https://twitter.com/ZachLowe_NBA/status/944229022480904192
I on the other hand, do not.
https://twitter.com/KaliLynMartin/status/944063325582786562
I miss watching him play ball for the Knicks…
LOL
Bummed I missed the first half and wife didn’t tivo first half. Loved Wade’s D. Bulls impressed me. They played tough and that markennen/mirotic combo is gonna be something. Wouldn’t be surprised to see mirotic get moved cause they’re winning too many games. Though he has a trade veto
Good recap EG. Though really, my opinion……IT DON’T MATTER.
I liked Drew starting Channing & coming back with Love late. If Ty would have done that, I think we win in Milwaukee.
Bulls look like their improved play is sustainable & I expect them to pass the Nets & stay ahead of them. Lavine should beat Russell back by a couple weeks.
Nice cap, yo.
Nice to see LeBron comfortable receiving the inbounds at the end and sinking the two free throws. Mentally I’ve never seen him at a higher level.
Going to be lots of late game heroics all year
Was thinking the same thing. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t see Bron at best split a pair of significant FTs. The Korver Effect.
Definitely looks much more assured at the line this year compared to last year. I’m guessing he worked on his shot like a demon in the offseason.
He did cost us a significant game, though, with his missed free throws, the first one against the Nets when he had a chance to tie the game and he missed both free throws with few seconds remaining. It is true though he is now better at every aspect of the game, except drawing fouls which is not his fault, as he gets mauled every single time he drives and the refs constantly swallow their whistles.
Can LD just run our royations and let Lue be the hype man?
I also liked the sitting of wade in the mid 4th to rest him while Calderon held down the court for a few min. Led to fresh Wade down the wire
IT looks like he hopes his home room teacher doesn’t bust him for trying to grow a mustache.
I think there is a good chance that in a few games he will be putting up big numbers. If so, it might take a while to figure out how to make it all work together.
Do we have a good CtB nickname for IT?
My fantasy basketball name is IT3PO
what up bobby!
What up, TOM!! Didn’t want to continue on as “DellevaYoda” without Mr. Delly on the team…
oh man – I’m not sure I made the connection that you WERE DellavaYoda – WHOOPS
Take another curtain call EG on that 115-112 game prediction. You were a Channing Frye missed 3 (he was just 0/1) away from nailing the score exactly again. I would have said a Jae Crowder missed 3, but he mercifully didn’t take one. I am sure with you on LD reinserting Love late in the 4th. Given Larry Drew’s nickname, I have to say that was a pretty, pretty, pretty good move. As you said, hopefully Lue realizes that having a 20/10 player on the bench in too many 4th quarters may not be the best move. With 2-3 minutes… Read more »
The plan might be to keep KL’s minutes down so he is in top shape for the playoffs. KD does not have the superman body that LeBron has.
It looks like LeBron and Kevin have finally figured out how to play together efficiently. That can take a long time. All the more reason why LeBron will realize all the pluses are are with staying in Cleveland.
I love it when Bron’s mic’d up.
Thanks for the recap, EG! Good win last night against a really hot team.
