Podcap: Cavs 91, Heat 89 (or, Napoleon and the Yeti)
2018-02-01Talk about hard… this game was like Napoleon trying to win at Waterloo hard… like finding a yeti at the top of the mountain hard. Hard to play, hard to watch and hard to even recap in a reasonable amount of time. For 48 (thankfully only that) minutes which seemed like twice that (yet still shorter than this podcast), the Cavs and Heat took turns bricking threes at an insane rate, slogging through difficult trips to the free throw line, and making enough mistakes to allow the other team to steal a win. In the end, the Cavs prevailed, but it was hard to say that they stopped the Heat… so much as that they just made one more shot or one less mistake.

Speaking of Napoleons and yeti (or is it yetis?), Tom, Nate and EG congregated in the virtual C:tP booth to breakdown this difficult win, as well as cover a wide range of things big and small. Tom went on some epic rants that he’s been holding in for the last week… Nate delved into the complexities of little men with big chips on their shoulders… and EG compared championship fatigue with mountain climbing and mythical monsters. Needless to say, you may find it hard to get to the end… but hopefully it makes it easier to enjoy this game that was hard on the eyes.

I’m still bummed McCollum scored fifty. woulda moved the Brooklyn pick for him.
The CavsDan antifans has stolen his pals unicycle: http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/02/dan_gilbert_is_very_concerned.html#incart_river_home_pop
Looking at the list of 3 point contest participants – wish Flama Blanca was in it (in addition to Curry and Kyrie), but he probably wanted to enjoy the ASB at home
Hard to imagine someone beating Korver in that…I don’t know the process for selecting the players. Korver is one of the top 3-4 best 3 point shooters in NBA history.
No one realized ‘Brons camp put that out so he could be tied to every team in California. LBJ already said we will retire in Cleveland.
Doesn’t mean he won’t spend 5 years in California before

LeBron should go play with Price, Brad, Harper, Nance and those guys! They would kick butt!
It’s funny how small forward was the weak link on those teams (though Daugherty/Nance/Hot Rod was pretty kick-ass when they were on the floor together).
And then a decade after that group’s run ends, the Cavs get the greatest small forward in history — but struggle to put a supporting cast around him.
This dog would make a better defensive coordinator than Mike Longabardi…

We should get a Border Collie.

And if LeBron has a free evening, he should settle the P ?= NP question.
NICE
The Cavs have a mental advantage over the Raptors. They will roll them in the playoffs . . . again.
Yeah, I’m not a fan of Haberstroh. I find him to be an arrogant jerk!
This was great. Tom’s rants were epic.
Pels reportedly have a done deal for Mirotic. Bulls get a 1st, Asik, Jameer Nelson, and Tony Allen.
Allen will be waived. He is hurt now. But if he will be healthy by PO time, that might be worth it. If Nelson gets waived, he is better than Rose.
See below
I’d kick some money the Bulls way to swap Rose for Nelson so that the Bulls can waive him instead and the Cavs can get a competent guard. Tony allen and Justin holiday for Zizic and calderon?
Report saying Bulls will keep Nelson
Isn’t it obvious that 80 percent of cavs issues are- having either jr or tt or both on the the floor at all times! i still say ride what we had going during 18-1 run , where tt was out have zz start at 5 till love comes back and cedi takes jr spot, so start lebron zz jea isaih cedi, and 2nd unit will be- wade frye korver green plus 1 starter, i feel like everyone is getting distracted with isiah , hes a problem right now , but i feel like we were in a terrible place before… Read more »
You can’t solve any problems while Isaiah is here
Well, if the 75%-80% thing is true, we can conclude that IT at 80% isn’t worth much.
It isn’t helping that TT is borderline useless, as is Shump. And Rose & JR are close. Cedi is glued to the bench & Love is hurt. And LeBron only tries 30% of the time.
I think Cavs have a chance to add these players using their own pick.
Mirotic, Tyreke, Lou williams, R Lopez, Kyle O Quinn, Reggie Evans, Clarkson etc..
Ofcourse, each comes with their pros and cons.
Not really interested in Lou Williams, Jordan Clarkson, Lopez, or Evans. I’d take Mirotic, Tyreke Evans, or Kyle O’Quinn tho.
Lopez though can help the team and has contract for just one more year. Right now, you have TT, only true big in the team.
I’m tired of speculation. Just want to know what team I’m rolling with
I am against using a pick for a rental. This draft is deep. Get a player we will have for 4-5 years. We ain’t winning anything with this group.
Agree with Jason.
Just listening now…thank you, Tom, you rant for all of us…(or most of us)…
I don’t always agree with Tom but I particularly like the one at the end where he defends the Comic Sans Letter. He’s also convinced me to give Gilbert a little more leeway.
He’s dead on with the JJ Hickson story, and crap sites like The Ringer…
How I envision we’ll rid the world of the JJ Hickson/Amare narrative:
RIDE NOW
FORTH EORLINGAS!!!!!

Felt like the Cavs might have had a shot at CJ. But not now.
Lol @ E!SPN for the LeBron to Warriors rumors. Must be a slow news day.
And for you Browns fans…

So, Cousins will bring those extremely good receivers with him? Cool!
Cool! I hope it is true. This might be the year the Brown’s turn it around. I hope they can find a place to keep Hue Jackson where he can’t screw anything up.
Browns fans are adorable
For you Tribe fans out there…

I think the enormous expectations were last year. Right up until they forgot to put a center fielder on the playoff roster.
I didn’t watch the game, but I recorded it. It sounds like despite the win, it was a pretty forgettable game.

He should get a metal hook to replace his hand.

Meant to add that I would love to have Tyreke Evans too, if I I had to pick one player who is available. I am sure you saw the problem with the George Hill deal was that Gilbert supposedly wanted him to agree to a buyout if James left.
Dude is owed like $23 million beyond this year. Asking him to take a buyout is ridiculous on its face.
Does Dan Gilbert want to pay LeBron $40 million when he is 38? That is a very pertinent question as discussed on the podcast as it relates to James’ potential supermax contract. If James makes the decision to leave, I agree with EG that LeBron picks the Spurs. James indeed has genuine respect for Popovich.
That’s a good point. If LBJ leaves I do hope he goes to the Spurs.
I hope he stays. A lot of people seem sure about what LeBron will do next year. I doubt if LeBron is one of them. If he does go, I would also like to see him with the Spurs. They could beat the Warriors, and LeBron would wind up with a mostly sane and competent team and office.
I think Lebron would like to stay but all the chaos and the owner is making it very difficult for him to stay.
Credit where credit is due… John B supplied the initial scenario about how LBJ could join the Spurs…
I am sure it is more complicated that what I laid out with a bunch of non-guaranteed having to come back unless they trade with a team 12.5 million under the cap, but essentially with the projected cap at 101 million, the Spurs would need to clear about 12.5 million to offer James a 35.5 million dollar deal, around the equivalent to his player option next year. That is unless Ginobli retires, at which point they would need around 10. But basically they have two decent sized expiring contracts ending after the 2018-2019 season in Green (10 mil) and Gay… Read more »
Those supermax contracts are scary for any player…paying about 40 mill for ANY mid-late ’30s guy is most likely going to be crippling…
only lasted just over an hour with this pod…no offense…but it just felt like a long time and more importantly i heard Tom Pestak’s rants, and thats all that matters. I do agree on his rant about national media ripping on the Cavs when things go south. Especially the Ringer, which is no surprise. Its owned and operated by Simmons who is Celtics homer and wants Cleveland to be bad so Boston can have ‘glory days’ again. What is interesting is that in the last 30 years, the Cavs and Celtics both have one championship each, and the Cavs have… Read more »
Russillo said on his pod last night he still believes Lebron is staying. He has been pretty plugged in the last few years with Cleveland. …
Like the look of “Altered Carbon”, thanks for the heads-up EG.
“I’m trying to be angry!” Tom you kill me. Epic rants, thank you for the chuckles.
yeeessssh……. http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/22281387/golden-state-warriors-play-lebron-james
That would be the dumbest thing ever. I almost think the commissioner would have to get involved at that point.
This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.
Dumb dumb dumb duuummmb!!!!!!
Clickbait which appears to be working.
Actually this is brilliant Dan Gilbert t rolling
Yeah… I heard Bron is still stewing over the Cavs not trading JJ Hickson for Amare… FAKE NEWS
Chris Haynes has zero credibility in my book also… “Sources” could literally just be the voices in his head…
Also… the video at the top of the article is just some ESPN guys READING ABOUT THE ARTICLE THAT THE OTHER ESPN GUY JUST WROTE!!
Hayenes is a complete hack. He was horrible when he was in Cleveland, too.
I really can’t see him going to the warriors if just because of the bad blood between some of those guys and him, not to mention the effect it would have on his legacy. I mean it would be even worse for his legacy than it was for Durant’s legacy and that was already pretty damaging.
Ugly season because of the level of injuries players are suffering left and right. Prayers to Isaiah Canaan and everyone to have a speedy and safe recovery.
