Recap: Mavs 98, Cavs 87 (or, April Fools!)
2018-04-02The Cavs overlooked an Easter Sunday trap game against the Dallas Mavericks, as they played down to the competition and choked away a game to a team that is not only actively tanking, but admitting to it publicly. The shocking 11 point loss dropped Cleveland into fifth place in the Eastern Conference behind Philadelphia and Indiana (who own the tie-break on the season) and put the Cavaliers in a precarious position going into arguably one of the tougher weeks of the season with games against Toronto, Washington and Philadelphia…
APRIL FOOLS!
Okay, I probably didn’t fool any of you really… but I put that in all caps just so I don’t get a gazillion Tweets, emails and comments saying “Did you even watch the game, EG?! You got the score wrong!!”
Yes, I transposed the “C” and the “M” in the headline… and, the inverse of my first paragraph is mostly true… well except for the playing down to the competition part, which was actually not all that surprising. In fact, it would be hard to blame the Cavs for not really taking the Mavericks seriously… given that their owner and coach have essentially admitted they are taking measures to avoid winning unnecessary ballgames in favor of additional ping pong balls in this summer’s NBA draft lottery. I mean, when you know the team you’re playing… no matter how hard they try for the first three quarters… is basically just going to lay down in the end, what’s the impetus to try all that hard yourself?
Maybe that explains the bizarre effort put forth by the Cavaliers in this game… or, maybe LeBron doing shots with Justin Timberlake on stage the night before a game might have led to him missing shots on the court the next day. Who’s to say?
All I know is that for a while, The King sure seemed like he was satisfied with ending his record streak at 867 games. In fact, he still had just single digits until he drained a couple of free throws with 7:59 remaining in the game. That’s because LeBron had one of his worst shooting nights ever, going just 5-21 (23.8%) including a paltry 3-18 (16.7%) on twos… most of which were close to point blank misses.
So, yeah… LeBron sucked.
APRIL FOOLS!
Actually, despite the abnormally horrific shooting by LBJ… he STILL messed around and picked up a triple double with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists. It was his 17th TD on the season and 72nd of his career, putting him just six behind the great Wilt Chamberlin. As he said after the game, on the rare occasion that his shot isn’t falling, LeBron is the epitome of a player who will focus on other aspects of his game to help his team win. Like firing backhanded, cross-court baseball passes to guys like Kevin Love for wide open corner threes…

Or pulling down tough rebounds in traffic… even if many of them were on his own misses. He also didn’t turn the ball over much (just twice), while helping shoulder a large portion of the PG duties with starter George Hill out with a sprained ankle. About the only other thing Bron did poorly (other than shoot), was continue to resist closing out on three point shooters in favor of playing his “free safety” role under the hoop… but that’s nothing new in the regular season.
The game itself was a rough watch. When a team doing just enough to win plays against a team that’s doing just enough to lose… the results are less than scintillating. This is NBA basketball in April in this era of #TankStrong.
In a nutshell:
The Cavs got off to their usual slow start against a poor team; the Mavs got going behind a player with something to prove to the Cavs (in this case Harrison Barnes); the Cavs caught up with LeBron and the second unit guys before Yogi Ferrell started hoisting YOLO threes; the second unit guys with Love got roasted on pick and rolls; then JR caught fire and the Cavs fought their way back during a 12-5 run to take a 48-47 lead on a Cedi Osman jumper.
The second half started as a see-saw battle, until Tristan checked in for Larry Nance Jr. and Harrison Barnes started raining threes again; Jose Calderon saved the day with some hot shooting of his own; yet some cat named Dorian Finney-Smith took advantage of LeBron’s lack of interest in close out defense and boxing out to go on a personal five point run to put the Mavs up by eight; the shooting of Jordan Clarkson, Osman and Smith kept things close; the Cavs retook the lead at 82-81 with 8:30 to play and continued their 25-10 onslaught in the final frame as the Mavericks sent in the tank unit.
The Evil
The Cavs kept the Mavs in the game with their awful shooting and lack of commitment to defense. What should have been an easy blowout April Fools joke of a contest with some early rest for the starters, turned into a draining slog through some truly ugly basketball.
LeBron and Kevin Love, the Cavs’ go-to scorers, were a combined 9-34 (26%) for a miserable night of shooting. Ironically, they also went 4-7 from three…
As teasingly good as Tristan Thompson was in his previous game against Anthony Davis and the Pelicans… TT was woefully bad trying to guard guys like Harrison Barnes tonight. He also couldn’t buy a basket (1-5) because his gather and release makes molasses look speedy. Thompson is still hit and miss.
This was one of those games on the schedule that SCREAMED for some quality Cedi Osman and Ante Zizic minutes off the bench. Apparently, Coach Drew is just as deaf to these cries for sanity as Coach Lue was, as Cedi saw six minutes of actual playing time… and shared a minute of garbage time with ZZ. Osman actually did a lot with the crumbs allowed him, going 2-3 (with a triple) for six points to go with an assist and steal. Ante did not see the ball in his garbage minute. Poor Z.
Jeff Green attempted 17 threes and missed them all… APRIL FOOLS!
The fans at the Q got April Fooled out of their free chicken nuggets when London Perrantes held the ball, keeping the score at 98…
Also… enough with the grey uniforms!!!!!
The Genius
I already covered LeBron, but his partner in shooting crime tonight, Kevin Love, actually also had a decent game outside of the bricks. Kev still was a rebounding force, pulling down 13 of them to go with his 13 points (his 400th career double double, making him only the 7th active player to reach the milestone). He also had a steal and a block, and was a team leading +13 for the game. As mentioned, the one place he did shoot well was beyond the arc… as he was the beneficiary of some terrific passing…

The Splash of Henney Brothers picked up the slack in this one, as JR Smith and Jordan Clarkson combined to shoot 11-20 for 31 much needed points off the bench. JR did much of his damage from three (3-6) while also snagging four boards, while JC did most of his on drives, back downs on Yogi Ferrell and getting to the line (6-7). He also swiped three steals.
Sure looks like they’re having fun together too…

Jose Calderon essentially kept the Mavs from running away with things to start the second half, scoring all eight of his points on timely buckets to counter Harrison Barnes. As usual, Jose helped keep the offense running and made smart basketball plays in his 22 minutes, not to mention his two awesome highlight reel assists…

Larry Nance Jr. and Rodney Hood both had solid (if unspectacular) games in the starting unit. Both played more limited minutes than expected (although both are still not far removed from injury) but still contributed while on the floor. LNJ had six boards and was active on the front line, while Hood sank a big three and finished with nine points on 4-9 shooting. Both guys should continue to gain confidence playing alongside LeBron, Love and either Calderon or Hill (when he’s back).
Jeff Green attempted ZERO threes, and made me grin ear to ear with a drop step dribble drive to the hoop (the thing he’s best at and shouldn’t deviate from). Uncle Jeff even had three rebounds to warm Nate’s heart as well…
Parting Shot
It’s weird when Easter falls on April Fools Day… weirder still when two NBA teams that aren’t really trying for very different reasons play each other on said day. It makes you wish this whole tanking movement was more of a bad joke instead of making the League just look like one. Still, the games must be played, and the Cavs need every win they can muster to stay ahead of the Sixers and Pacers for playoff seeding. Hopefully, we never have to suffer through another 5-21 game from LeBron… but as long as there are no Justin Timberlake concerts during the playoffs, we shouldn’t.
Although, it probably won’t matter since the Cavs are going to get swept in the first round anyway…
APRIL FOOLS!
(Yeah, okay… enough already EG)
GO CAVS!
On the Raps game: Vardon says Love will play & Korver is a game time decision.
On the draft: sometimes teams do not want or do not have room for a ton of young guys at the same time.
If Bron stays, our only real ?s for next year are Hood (RFA?), Green & Jose. I would expect Rodney to be back. At most, 4 spots open. Maybe only 2. Barring TT/JR getting dealt.
was just referring to their 2 — 1st round picks / 4 — 2nd round picks—-trade bait for a legit player / young players gaining more experience ( especially with playoff experience )—their future looks rather positive—-a lot of media already ‘hyping ” they (the sixers ) should go hire Jay Wright ——Bret Brown — in my opinion is a pretty damn good coach in his own right
Why would Wright leave Nova? He is king of the world right now.
Any updates on k love and kk for tonight ? Both game time decisions ? Do the cavs just lay down on this one if k love doesn’t play ?
man sixers are only going to get stronger ——-am sure LeBron will “evaluate” that also come this summer
? Howso? Is there something new?
I agree that the sixers have improved but that LeBron would consider them I don’t think so. Embid and Simmons are great young players to build around but first of all they need to learn to stay healthy and second of all they need more experience.
bulls have also shut down LAVINE / DUNN “FOR THE SEASON”
The twitters are aflame with Kawhi trade ideas for the Cavs. What a strange situation. Honestly, as much as I think the guy can be a brilliant player, he can’t stay healthy and is coming across like a head case.
The Spurs staff seems to think he is healthy. Outside opinions don’t seem to concur.
I think after what happened to IT, guys do not trust team doctors. Nor should they.
Regarding Noel, like John Wooden said, there is no fix for stupid. With so few teams having cap space next year, it is likely the Cavs can get a legit player with the taxpayer mid-level & maybe even a vet min or two. We got Cedi with part of our exception last year + Jose & Green on vet mins. Trying to buy into round 2 might be interesting as well. Atlanta has 3 firsts and a high second. Philly has 2 firsts and 4 seconds. Suns have 3 firsts and two seconds. Nuggets, OKC, & Nets have multiple 2nds.… Read more »
Allen Crabbe (Nets starting SG) is questionable tonight. I will take all the help I can get.
Read a stat on Nets daily that the Nets & Sixers are the two worst 4th quarter teams in the league. Even with 9 teams trying to lose.
Hopefully the recently eliminated Hornets embrace the tank vs Chicago as the Bees could still finish below the Lakers.
We will see in Love & Korver. The story I saw just said questionable. And seemed more optimistic on Korver. If no Love/Hill, I would go:
Jose, Hood, Korver, James, Nance.
Bench: Clarkson, JR, Cedi, Green, TT/Zizic.
If Valancunas is eating Nance/TT up with his size, play Zizic. The length of Hood/Cedi could bother DeRozan. We have no one to guard Lowry until Bron does it late.
SO GLAD WE DIDN’T TRADE FOR HIM —-NOEL —–HE IS “KISSING ” ALOT OF MONEY GOODBYE —HE CAN JOIN I.T. (DRAINO ) IN THE EURO LEAGUE
IS KLOWRY —going to play tonight —he was at last night’s game —–did some rough calculations / catch a plane / fly to Cleveland / unboard / get to hotel/ might not be until 6’00 / 7;00 this morning he lays down to sleep—–prediction —CAVS LOSE —SIXERS WIN—AFTER TONIGHT WE ARE IN 4TH SPOT—-BUT THAT COULD CHANGE AS QUICKLY AS TOMORROW NIGHT
https://www.mavsmoneyball.com/platform/amp/2018/4/3/17193230/dallas-mavericks-nerlens-noel-suspended-for-violating-nba-drug-policy
Nerlens Noel is a Moron.
I saw that too Jason ( love / hill / korver out )—cavs going to take —” lay low—don’t show ” approach with raptors tonight —keep them guessing—-yes nate said awhile back about Brunson —-kid just knows how to play / win—said also back then — I would take him over young also—would have to think a GOOD g.m. /scout sees this also in Young —I think his stock is going to plummet come draft—–could he become ”CURRY LIKE “–possible —I see more of potential BUST
I would like to see Lebron let the others (role players) figure it out more tonight. I believe this game will have some playoff intensity involved so we will get to see how the new guys react to that playoffs atmosphere.
fun recap, EG! was swamped yesterday so didn’t get to read, but glad I got to catch up Today.
Hill out, Love (illness) & Korver questionable for the Raptors game.
Come on Kev, gut one out.
generally when hes gutting one out he plays not very well and exits the game early anyways. rest and be stronger klove
if diVencenzo would declare for the draft—does he jump into the lottery pick equation—-I think so—his athleticism/ shooting / court awareness—I would take a chance on him
Brunson looks like a late lottery pick to me, too.
I love him…yeah he had a ridiculous night last night, and that’s going to get the hype going, but he’s freaking good every time I’ve seen him for two years…god, don’t let the Celtics get him somehow…
I’ve found the greatest twitter account, had me lmao for like an hour last night. Basically it’s a running stream of LeBron > Jordan, with endless examples of terrible, weak defense against Jordan.

Saw that. Someone posted that in the mavs live thread. Pretty hilarious. The guy cherry picked, but I looked at adjusted team d rating numbers on bball reference for 1990-1998 versus every year after that. Best statistical defensive era was the 1998-1999 (right after Jordan retired) season to around 2004-2004. After that the numbers are similar and in cases better than 1990-1998. I think the account is somewhat tongue in cheek, but the team numbers seem to back it up somewhat. Or at least the current era from post 2005 (when hand checks were ‘officially’ deemed a foul) basically appears… Read more »
Or never mind guess it was this thread. See below. I must be losing my mind.

Man, the DiVincenzo kid is off the charts. Athletic. Good passer. Great shot. Bit of a tude. I will take him over Young.
I would too. I wouldn’t even think about it.

Brunson gets away with offensive fouls on most of his drives…
Michigan in trouble now in first minutes of the second half…Nova up 14, and they can turn that into 25 quick like…
Love love love Divincenzo for Nova…total bada$$…
If the Cavs keep the pick and get Bridges, I would be pretty happy.
Yeah. We could use a lot of things available at the top 8 of the draft: 1) Freak athlete C with great touch: Ayton 2) Freak athlete PF with great motor: Bagley 3) Basketball savant who can play 3 spots, is the best player in Europe as a teen: Doncic 4) Freak athlete C shot blocker with 7’9″ wingspan. 5) Freak athlete PF shot blocker who shoots 40% on 3s and 80% from the line: Jackson 6) Smooth 6’10” F who can score from anywhere: Porter 7) PG who was the first to lead the NCAA in scoriing & assists:… Read more »
No idea where Divencenzo is slotted to go, but it’s hard for me to believe that that guy won’t be a good rotation player in the NBA. Has the size, athleticism and the skill. Some team is going to be happy to get him.
Brunson might be the most underrated guy in this draft. Could come in and contribute right away for some teams. See him as a George hill/McCollum combo guard in the NBA.
As expected, Michigan making it much harder for Nova. I still expect Nova to win by 10 or so.
Yep. They are expending so much energy to stay even.
guess I am rooting for sixers tomorrow vs the nets as the sixers have BB/ play at Detroit the next day–pistons are fighting for playoffs—-nets play bucks on wed who are also fighting for playoffs—-hoping nets drop 2in / row / maybe ‘cash in ‘ early for the season —CAN ONLY HOPE
Saric also out for Philly vs Brooklyn.
In case it hasn’t been posted here already, this thread is outstanding

Stop with the Bron vs MJ stuff. It is not even close. Bron is not even top 3.
1) Defense was tougher in that era.
2) LeBron takes WAAAAAY more plays off than MJ did.
3) All defense:
Jordan = 9 times 1st team + 1 DPOY
Bron = 5 1st, 1 second team.
Great stuff from two all-timers. Clear edge to MJ (and Russell, Kareem, & Wilt).
It’s not making a serious case. The captions and clips are hilarious, which is how I would have described it, except telling people that something is hilarious before they’ve seen it is a good way to make it less funny.
LeBron not top 3???
Ahhhh what???
Lack of emphasis on the three pointer over lows Jordan’s defensive influence. You really think lebron wouldn’t sniff a Dpoy in a game where he doesn’t have to worry about that?
Are either of you old enough to have watched hoops in the 80s, 90s, or even 70s? Because your comments are so silly. Bron as a better defender than MJ is patently absurd. Only a true Cavs homer would even entertain the idea. Bron doesn’t close to shooters. Hates to bang or blockout. His teams require getting anothe F to guard PFs during the regular season (Battier) cause Bron won’t. And he whines about calls enough where he doesn’t even cross halfcourt many times. You could hand check in those days and fighting didn’t even get you ejected. Flagrant fouls… Read more »
I did, and also watched plenty in the 60’s and 70’s.
There are many dimensions of being good in basketball. LeBron is ahead of Jordan in most. Jordan is ahead in the hype and underware ads categories.
The Jordan/LeBron debate is long over except for those of you living in the past. When the next great player comes along, they will be comparing him to LeBron, not Jordan.
Dead wrong. You can’t be serious.
1. Defense was tougher? MJ went to the line more than Hardin. Harden at least has to reach out and touch the defender. Jordan got fouls for defenders just looking at him. Jordan never got clobbered the way LeBron does all the time.
2. So what? BFD.
3. Votes by the media. Same smarts as Westbrook being MVP when he always plays for the triple double over everything. Westbrook should have got the “Ricky Davis” award.
See above for a direct rebuttal regarding point 1 based on actual numbers.
Pretty funny. Some of those guys weren’t terrible defenders but it was clearly meant to be tongue in cheek. The zone rules definitely equal out the fewer hand checks. Also I wouldn’t really say teams started played suffocating d until the very late 80s when the bad boys revolutionized how physical teams could be and get away with it. After that, teams like the Knicks, Bulls, and Heat in the 90s ran with it. Also I would say the early to mid 2000 Spurs and Pistons, and 2008 Celtics were probably better defensive teams than nearly every team playing in… Read more »
There was only two year in the 90s when Jordan was playing that had a team with an adjusted drating under 100, the cavs at 99.65 in 97-98, and the Knicks in the mid 90s. Defense and physical play got insane after that with a whopping 7 teams posting adjusted d ratings under 99 the next year, with the Spurs posting an insane 95.84. Until 2001-2002, there were at least three teams under 100. In 2003-2004 6 teams were under 100 with the Spurs posting a 94.09, I believe the best ever. Since then several times teams have broken 100… Read more »
I should note that I went with the era from 1990-1998. After that defenses became absurdly difficult to score against for around the next 8 years according to the numbers at which point they regressed to about equivalent to 90-98 for most years.
Oh, well done Phil, sorry for the repost above. I found it hilarious as well
As it contains no video of the Pistons, that thread is irrelevant.
A day off with no NBA tonight.
Take a look at the Kyrie deal we supposedly got screwed on by Danny Ainge.
Looking at what we shipped out & what we got back (net).
OUT: Kyrie, 2018 Cavs first (25th), RJ, Frye, Shump, Rose, $2.1 million, a 2024 2nd rd pick swap rights to Utah, Eurostash guy.
IN: Hill, Nance, Clarkson, Hood, Nets 2018 pick (tied 6th), Zizic, Eurostash guy.
I would have loved CP3 or PG13, but Kyrie’s timing killed that. 5 rotational guys for this year + the pick. Not bad.
Agree with this one.
watching cedi’s “dance moves ” and LeBron / green “mock ” him is great to see—-thanks for sharing !!—-think LeBron / green really like / enjoy this kid !!!
Who else called Calderon as the Free Agent pick up of the season last year… (crickets).
Yeah, me neither. Larga Vida Jose!!!
Yeah, I can’t remember anyone who thought it was a great pick up at the time… He’s been so much better than anticipated.
do we root for the nets to win /lose against the sixers tomorrow——have said previously—–ILLYSOVA/ BELLINELI –pick ups by the sixers are huge —paying great dividends right now—and probably more come the playoffs –do not want them right away
I wanted Illyasova when he was available from Orlando (?). Dude can shoot and has a really good head on his shoulders when it comes to basketball.
Absolutely sucks that Ante has gotten glued to the bench, totally criminal. I can’t believe LeBron hasn’t voiced his opinion on the matter. Maybe cause TT is a Klutch player… So freaking annoying.
Guarantee you Popovich would turn Ante into the next Paul Gasol. No reason not to. Kid has the height, iQ and talents. What a freaking waste.
Rooting for the Sixers, but they will probably lose with Embiid out. Their offensive production without Embiid is like fourth worst in the NBA, and they also are mediocre on defense when he sits.
Sixers all the way. All we have to do is beat them head to head. Root for anyone else on their schedule to beat them, except the Nets.
JOSE —continues to “put that fork away “—-april fools joke again on –” FREE ANTE “—-what should have been a game where cavs put away the mavs early and FORCE DREW to allow ANTE on the floor– sadly turned into 1 minute of “friggin garbage time ” for the kid —-he should have continued to be given solid minutes after his productive 5 game stretch / continue to grow and get experience —-now it is too late for this season –what a waste —sorry to be such a ” DOWNER ” after a win –but it is frustrating —–still waiting… Read more »
I was gotten. LoL
Glad to see Cavs did what they were supposed to.
Is Calderón playing himself to 2-3 more years in the league? Guy is the ultimate veteran and has shown he can be 85% a starter.
Couldn’t agree more!! There should be a Beer named after him!
Coming into the season I didn’t think he would even play enough minutes to even miss him. Now he’s showing he can still play and be productive another 2-3 years. Good for him!
Can we start a petition for a local
“Olé, Olé, José” dark lager?
If he wants another year here at vet min I would gladly take him. Hard to do better for the #3 PG.
If we end up with Trae Young, Calderon would be a good mentor.
Not a scintilating display of NBA basketball, but in the end both teams got what they wanted: the Cavs a win, and the Mavs a loss.
