Podcast 182: Get Off My Lawn
2018-10-11https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/episode-182-get-off-my-lawn
Thanks to Kyrie Irving being unable to keep his ungrateful, recalcitrant pie hole buttoned… EG went full Pestak tonight, dragging Nate down a rabbit hole of NBA rants. The Evil one gave both barrels to the Flat Earther about his recent comments about Boston “saving” him from the living hell that apparently must have been Cleveland for him. That vitriol spilled over into other topics like Jimmy Butler’s weird hold out that doesn’t extend to insane practice sessions where he shouts at people like a lunatic… uninformed announcers and media honks who seem hell-bent on bursting any bubble of happiness we Cavs fans want to nurse in the days before the games matter… and the insanity EG and Nate found in actually rooting for the Warriors in a meaningless preseason tilt in Vegas with LeBron’s Frankenstein Lakers.
Whew… that’s a lot of annoyance packed into an hour or so of a two man pod… but hopefully you’ll get a kick out of a couple of geezers letting off steam. As always, you can catch us above, on Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts or Google Play.
Just a week until the season starts! GO Cavs!

I hope this means that he won’t steal his girlfriend, and only help him with b-ball:

Remember when the Cavs Almost got prime Amar’e Stoudemire but refused to trade JJ Hickson??
I think about it everyday! Oh what could have been…
I COULD USE THE WORD –“ALMOST ” IN “ALMOST ‘ MY ENTIRE LIFE …………..”ALMOST “————–WITH TAYLORS INJURY ——ROSTER SPOT OPEN FOR ‘BONZI “—-2 WAYS GOING TO PRESTON AND TERRY—-HOLLAND ODD MAN OUT —–THAT IS THE WAY I “ALMOST ” SEE IT PLAYING OUT
LOL….this guy’s twitter feed is pretty good…

“Almost” is a very large word.

If he learns to dribble without looking at the ball he’s a surefire MVP candidate….
I understand Nate’s frustration with Larry. I feel relatively confident that most of Larry’s preseason mistakes are the result of his attempt to expand his game. I have been encouraged by what I have seen of him on a play by play basis, despite the more glaring turnover errors. I am completely for Colson making the squad. He has been solid on defense. That was the question on him, not his offense. Colson has been short on his limited attempts so far, but he has great touch and decent range. Should make the roster. Sam Dekker does some decent work… Read more »
Is it an inability with Collin or an unwillingness/deferring nature? I don’t think playing with gutless George Hill as a mentor does him any favors. Also, the stress fracture for Isaiah Taylor changes the math. They can hold on to Colson now and punt on that decision till Taylor is healthy.
Sooo…Lebron is going to take this Lakers team to the western conference finals. Health of the warriors and possibly some lakers’ trades will influence whether he gets by the warriors…but gosh dang it he is still the best player in basketball by a wide margin. Can we for a second replace TT with a Mcgee sized man? Mcgee is gonna average like 2 offensive boards and 4+ dunks a game just playing with lebron. That said…that’s in the west. I predict cavs finish at #6 or #12, depending on Love’s health and Lue’s health. If both are healthy…we’re 6th. If… Read more »
He’s going to take Lakers to 1st o r2nd round
We have a McGee sized big man, his name is Ante Zizic and he’s actually better than McGee if used/coached properly.
I mean specifically playing with Lebron someone with Mcgee’s size and athleticism should shine in an up tempo offense. ZZ is more skilled than Mcgee but not near as athletic.

Seems realistic. I would take the over on love, but I don’t think it will be much more than 22-23 ppg. Sexton at 13 is probably close to spot on, and I wouldn’t be disappointed with that if he is mildly efficient and can show he can set people up.
These are probably fairly accurate…but they don’t mean anything about how the cavs season will go ( i get that may not be the point of bovada’s predictions). Those two could hit those figures or even exceed them and the cavs could go 20-62 or go 45-37. It’s not about their scoring. it’s about if Tye Lue can coach or if Tye Lue sucks. we have the pieces to be in the playoff race this year. Most of the east sucks. But if Lue is who we think he is…we also have the ability to suck and legitimately finish last… Read more »
Sidelined with a stress fracture? Maybe that opens up a roster spot for Bonzi?!

Taylor is a non-guaranteed contract too.
Good article on the whole Butler situation. I’m not typically a Ringer fan, but flagged this one because it provided some legal insight:
https://twitter.com/ringer/status/1050538740396019713?s=20
Hmm. Fascinating. Maybe Butler was playing chess after all. You see teams trade guys before the regular season so often after trade demands, you never really consider what actually would happen if they did hold out. Different than a free agent holdout I suppose from a monetary standpoint. Didn’t know about the breach of contract complications other than the loss of salary. Suppose the huge part of that other than the money is losing free agency rights. Guess the hedging about possible mending the fences from Butler is completely disingenuous. The wolves did blow this though if they ignored Butler… Read more »

I don’t know if there’s an opportunity for the Cavs to get in on this to help the Wolves and maybe acquire some picks by taking on Dieng or others?
Watch them get Wiggins back as a poison pill. Barf.
George Hill for Wiggins and a first
Man that contract though. So long. So much money. I might need two firsts. I don’t see him improving, especially not on a rebuilding or quasi rebuilding team like the cavs.
Haha I love that Thibs is pissing off the sockless curmudgeon…
https://twitter.com/Phantele_/status/1050545578118184960?s=20
Apologies for the language in that tweet.
It’s funny, but god, the Twolves are a mess under Thibs…
Oyyy. Thibs really making a mess of this. He is definitely on his way out. I suspect the remaining wolves will probably turn on him, if they haven’t already. I would be shocked if he lasted the season. Never seen a situation so botched. Even Kyrie’s debacle went smoother than this.
I think this is also just a part of the NBA drama. The NBA thrives on this “As The World Turns” shade throwing, dirty laundry airing atmosphere. It’s all just an extension of the ‘smack talk’ that happens in “White Men Can’t Jump,” except it’s now played out on Twitter, ESPN, Sports Talk Radio, etc… and we’re all experts and all the gossiping gossip girls of “Clueless,” and “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.” And we love it. We can’t get enough. With the 24 hour news cycle, the NBA is ‘played’ played more off the court than on it.… Read more »
I get it and it is true. The nba has leveraged the offseason drama as entertainment more than any other major American sport. It has become a sort of soap opera for sports fans. This situation is truly on another level of odd though in my opinion. Butler’s actions are truly bizarre and the fact that the wolves let it happen is just as strange. Sure, stars demand trades all the time now. But usually they hold out and the teams never entertain the thought of them coming to camp or playing. The fact that they actually thought Butler coming… Read more »
Yeah I definitely agree it’s a bad idea to make the coach the GM and President. Even if that coach is a great coach, it’s too much responsibility to dole out.
A coach and GM also occasionally diametrically opposed in their goals. A coach wants to win and complete as much as possible now. If Pop has a say, SA probably won’t blow it up. I couldn’t blame them. Think someone said he might retire if they do and he is worth more than just about any player or prospect in the league. You keep him happy as long as possible. Gms have to take a longer view if they want to be successful long term. You need that balance I think. I have no doubt Pop was on board with… Read more »
Also I don’t know how the Wolves let it happen with Butler? I guess this goes back to Thibs being the GM/Coach? So I get that angle. I understand Butler’s frustration with Wiggins and KAT. I think it’s totally warranted. And I have no issue with him requesting a trade. I don’t appreciate his orchestrated effort, using the media, to force the Wolves to accept a bad deal (fat Dion Waiters) to make him happy. The Wolves have no obligation to meet his demands. You signed this contract, but you also want x,y, and z.
I think the let it happen part has entirely to do with Thibs. I don’t think most teams would have let Butler back into the team after his comments this summer. Also I suspect Thibs and their dallying before his in person ultimatum this summer was entirely on Thibs thinking he could make it work. Probably the same reason they have dallied in the last month. As to Butler, yeah after learning about the espn interview and that ringer article, agree that was pretty shady. However, it likely happens all the time in this type of situation. Just not so… Read more »
JUST WATCHED ME SOME– “ET”–EMMANUEL TERRY HIGHLIGHTS——DII/ PLAYER OF THE YEAR / BEVO FRANCIS –( IF YOU KNOW THIS PLAYER YOU ARE OLD LIKE ME )—AWARD—IS DEINETELY A “HIGH FLYER “—–AND YES –( ALTHOUGH IT IS REALLY NOT A COMPLIMENT )–HAS A BETTER POST GAME THA T.T.——MAYBE AN INSURANCE TO SEE PRESTON DEVELOP/ BONZI STAYING HEALTHY
Just listened. Could not agree more with EG regarding both this Lakers team, and Allie Clifton. I would just add about the Lakers that they have the most entitled fanbase in American sports – really saying something in a world where Redsox fan, Celtic fan, and Yankee fan exist – so it’s not a Lebron thing with me. I wish every misfortune on the Lakers, and I hope that team implodes this season.
AGREE WITH ALL THAT YOU POSTED ARCH—–GOD JOB !!

Well this is “fake news”…….? Jeff Teague says it didn’t happen and Wolves assistant J Lucas 3 says what players meeting? Ok. This has gone from hilariously bizarre to truly hilarIiously insane. Not sure I have ever heard of/witnessed a more bizarre trade request and (quasi?) holdout in my 32 years. What is this? Have Butler and his agent truly gone insane, or are the wolves and their players trying to quash leaks and go the plausible deniability route? Was there a meeting but only with guys Butler actually likes, a la all the old bulls? He seemingly hurts his… Read more »
I hope the Wolves don’t trade Butler, but instead just let him act like a petulant child, and sit him on the bench the entire season. Maybe occasionally let him run with the 3rd stringers in practice.
He isn’t wrong about some of the effort and defensive issues from Towns and especially Wiggins. He is the best player on that team based on the advanced stats and how that team performed without him versus Wiggins and Towns lineups. I would say he has more of a point or justification than Kyrie did. I mean you won a ship and the next year you are one unfortunate injury, minor or major, to the warriors from competing and maybe winning a second. The wolves weren’t close and won’t ever be/have a chance until their other two stars got serious… Read more »
He isn’t wrong. but he’s also not doing it for the right reasons. He wants out, and will cry and stomp until he gets his way.
True, though his crying and stomping are very bizarre in that most of the crying and stomping has been very ambiguous with regards to an absolute desire to leave. That would seem to hurt his cause rather than help expedite the situation. Why it is so bizarre. Butler is either not listening to his agent or Leon Rose is just as out of his mind as Butler, because none of what has transpired in the last 24 hours would seem to help his cause more than just sitting out. By leaving open any possibility of coming back, playing, or mending… Read more »
He wants more $ or a new team. Wolves need to cut salary to accommodate.
I see. Hard to stomach that much money (based on the ringer article) for a 29 year old with an injury history, but I mean Wiggins….for god’s sake. I would have rather had Butler at age 34 and crippled than Wiggins now and maybe forever. If he Butler got his money and aged like wine and somehow managed to rub off defensively/competitively on Wiggins and Towns, it could be worth it. Not for other teams, but for that particular team, I probably would have done it. KD might not even be in GS in a year or two, at which… Read more »
What happened to Scootchie?
I don’t think he was a camp invite.
I agree that they should add Colson, and not Holland. And definitely not Terry! I’d also rather have Colson over Preston.
Agree. No thanks on Holland. Colson pissed me off the first game I saw him with an effort play on getting back on d. But other than that he has done some nice things. I do think they need another playmaking guard more than anything though. Hill is not that guy. They really don’t have anyone to break down the d other than sexton (vision is a question mark this year) and maybe Cedi. Could be tough to score at times without love on the floor without a penetrating guard. Not sure Sexton can do that consistently and consistently create… Read more »
To be completely transparent I have no idea who Terry is… I just don’t think I could live with a Terry on the roster.
Ha. I was just talking about Colson over Holland and Preston. I don’t keep track of a lot of the two way guys other than the ones I see in the preseason games or quarters I watch.
I know Terry though. He is a good guy. You should really give him chance.
The only Terry I know hates his name so much that he goes by Tito.
Thank goodness!

So glad they’re ditching the grey and yellow ones… worst unis ever…
They’ve got some seriously bad juju too.
Wine and GOLD. The mustards are marvellous. Agree 100% on the grays. Not a big fan of the blues.
MY BAD — TERRY —NOT TAYLOR
Terry’s gotta ruin everything!
SO WHAT GIVES WITH THE CAVS JUST SIGNING —EMMANUEL TAYLOR —6′ 9″ –DIV II PLAYER —-ESPECIALLY WHEN CUTS ARE RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER/ SEASON STARTING ?
Could just be that they want to take a peek before things settle in. Could be in preparation for later in the season after clearing the roster, who knows. I wouldn’t put stock in it quite yet. Though I am starting to worry about Colson not being on the roster. That’ll make me cranky.
I’m just waiting for Kyrie to alienate all his teammates, and Dredrick Irving to pick a fight with Danny Ainge.
I hope the Warriors and Lakers tie for the rest of eternity.
The basketball media player on mobile is irritating. Just stating my opinion as a user.
Thanks for the feedback, we’re working on that…
Gonna be a post abt this
Kyrie Irving is the guy who always thinks he’s the smartest person in the room but is an idiot, in reality.
EG, I agree with your take on Clifton.
I would probably go back and forth rooting against the Lakers and Warriors. But I could see myself ultimately rooting for the Warriors over the Lakers.
EVIL—-TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU –( CALL IT OLD SCHOOL )—TIRED OF THESE PRIMA DONNA CRY BABY ATHLETES WHO HOLD COACES / FRANCHISES “HOSTAGE ” BECAUSE FOR WHATEVER REASON ………………GROW THE EFFF UP—-HONOR THE CONTRACT …………….DAMN YOU GOT ME SO WORKED UP —HAVE TO GRAB ANOTHER COLD ONE TO SETTLE THE “OL” NERVES DOWN—-GREAT PODCAST !!!
Plus 1!
I still think Boston makes it to the finals, assuming they stay healthy. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Toronto or Indy make it there instead.
—IT IS STILL “AM ” HERE IN OHIO—BUT I HAVE TO TUNE IN AND LISTEN / HAS GOTTEN MY ATTENTION—-GO GET A 6 PACK -( SNAP/ CRACKLE AND BURP )–SIT BACK AND ENJOY———–YES I TOO WAS ROOTING FOR THE DUBS AGAINST THE LAKERS / FUNNY HOW THINGS TURN SO QUICKLY
This sounds like a fun listen.
ooo I’m looking forward to this!
Haven’t listened yet, but Kyrie is incredibly boring, as our esteemed Great Leader might say. I don’t need to hear him say anything about anything the rest of my life.
I’m sure Kyrie will pay Billy Simmons to write a book titled “Escape from Cleveland – a flat earther’s struggle of making the finals 3 years in a row.”
