Podcast 183: Overs, Unders, Hoaxes and Blunders
2018-10-16https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/podcast-183-overs-unders-hoaxes-and-blunders
Will the Cavs really win fewer than 31 games this year? Will the Lakers win more than 48? Will the Warriors continue their boring domination? Will the Indiana Pacers go Hoosier and shock the world? Who will win the end of season awards? And, most importantly… will Tom have to become a vigilante to stop the spread of a new fruity drug scourge from claiming victims in Southern Ohio?
All of these questions get answered… and much, much, much (really way too much) more on tonight’s eve of the regular season podcast. Nate, David, EG and Tom all crowded into the booth to get a lay of the land… and The Land as the Cavs embark on this year’s journey. We try to separate reality from surreal hoax… and head down a rabbit hole filled with guns, drugs, fake news and denied Linked-In requests. You have to hear it to believe it…
As always, you can catch us above, on Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts or Google Play.
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE!
GO CAVS!
Regarding the pitches:
EG: Great call on Mr Inbetween, but as an Aussie I would say that, wouldn’t I.
Nate: I watched “Downsizing” on your recommendation, even after checking out the IMDB rating. I can only quote EG: “Oh God”.
ha-ha !!
INTERESTING POLL—–HOW MANY BLOGGERS SPORT SOME KIND OF “FACIAL HAIR “—-COUNT NOMAD IN—–“FULL GOATEE—AS GRAY AS CAN BE “
Not a blogger but I could sometimes be mistaken for Scott Howard of the Beacon Hill High School Beavers.
Have a beard. Have had it for 8 years and shaved it off twice in that time. I keep it very short, though I have grown it out a few times.
Had a beard from about age 22 to 55 or so. Went from big full reddish brown to short “unshaven look” length. As the color goes from dark to gray, the unshaven look goes from “wild poet type” to “old wino”, which is not nearly as cool. Here in the cultural center of southern Ohio, halloween is a big deal. One year I decided to be a HS Principal, and shaved it off, and have not looked back.
THIS MAY COME ACROSS HARSH—-BUT KLOVE NEEDS TO GROW HIS BEARD– QUICKLY!!—-THE SHAVEN FACE IS NOT A GOOD LOOK FOR HIM—-( EVEN LOVE ADMITS SO )
My wife would disagree
haha
ARCH—–KNOWING THE “HISTORY ” OF BOTH THOSE TEAMS —IT IS QUITE PLAUSIBLE OF HAPPENING
Can’t wait for the Celtics to trade Rozier to the Kings for 18 first round picks /s
Yeah I feel like Ainge must have sort of hyponotic power that causes people to give away first round picks to him every other year.
The Fultz trade, and the way Tatum turned out and the fact that Fultz can’t play basketball anymore finally convinced me that Ainge is in league with Satan.
Things do seem to have magically worked out for him at every turn, save for the Kyrie/Hayward injuries. Even then could be a blessing if those two guys come back the same since all those young guys gained hyper valuable playoff experience all the way to the ecf. Maybe shortened their development paths. Did pretty well with Brown. Got great value in Rozier. I have lost track of how many of those guys are from the Brooklyn trade.
JRL—AGREEING / HOPING AT THE SAME TIME ABOUT SEXTON—-( HOW OLD WAS OLADIPO WHEN DRAFTED )—ONLY REASON I SAY THIS –IS WE HAVE TO REMIND OURSELVES –“YOUNG BULL ” IS STILL ONLY 19 YRS OLD / YOUNG —-ALOT OF GROWTH –BOTH PHYSICALLY / EMOTIONALLY / BASKETBALL I.Q / SKILLS ETC.—–COULD POSSIBLY BE ALL -STAR IN 4-6 YRS —WOULD TAKE HIM OVER FULTZ !!!!!!!——-WE ARE DISCUSSING CELTS / 76ER’S BATTLING FOR THE EAST———-I AM THINKING RAPTORS / PACERS WILL BE RIGHT IN THERE ALSO —–AM ROOTING FOR THE PACERS ——LOVE THEIR STLYE OF PLAY !!!
I put the Pacers over the 76ers any day. I also place Oladipo as the 2nd best player on the East behind a healthy/focused Kawhi. I can easily see the Raptors/Pacers on the ECF this season.
Catching up with the podcast now.
Oladipo as MVP is a possibility. He’s got the heart and was phenomenal last year.
I do think Sexton compares to him, at least in mindset. Can it translate to the court? I truly hope so.
Weird prediction but Cedi will be borderline all-star.
I’m not going to make any hot predictions on Sexton one way or the other, but I watched a ton of Oladipo in college, and he was an absolute freak athlete. I used to compare his athleticism to Jordan’s, he’s that amazing.
I agree that Sexton is a heck of a competitor…that’s one thing you need in the NBA…we’ll find out if he has the rest.
Yeah I was a fan of his in college too. Wanted him over Bennett.
I wanted Oladipo also. Bennet was such a disaster.
I thought we were sitting pretty that draft. Dipo or Porter would have been fine.
Also was screaming for Drummond when we took Dion, Green in the second round (Felix), and Jonas or Klay when we took TT.
Those are the high points. I won’t mention the lows. Ugh.
“I LOVE OUR CELTICS HATE”.
If things get really bad for the Cavs this year, it’s this sentiment that will keep me coming back to CtB in the dark times.
hell yeah
Fultz is horrible and will remain horrible. He does nothing beyond his natural talent. He is a trainwreck on D and walks around on offense unless he has the ball. If Brand and Brown are smart, they get rid of Fultz as soon as possible. Every minute that goes by lowers his trade value. The Sixers arent going anywhere if Fultz is getting big minutes. All this talk about his defensive potential is nonsense. He has the physical tools, but no brain and no heart. I wish he were on the Celtics or Warriors.
He doesn’t do it for me either. I don’t think this season’s 76ers will be better than last year’s team. Their bench is weak and I think Embiid is more worried about his social media life than his basketball game.
Also, to me, Embiid is a low iq player. Young K. Love was a much better player and did nothing in Minnesota. I don’t see Embiid carrying a team when the grind gets tougher.
I so wish the Celtics had drafted him…
At a min, get him out of the starting lineup & put Redick back in. 3 guys who cannot shoot + Covington around Embiid makes no sense.
I think Indy will be better and the Bucks could be. I am a coach Bud believer & really like Middleton as well.
OKC vs warriors has been weird. Westbrook is out…but schroeder is a weird westbrook lite in that he shoots a similar percentage from spots and also gets fouled a lot on the way to the hoop…and shoots a poor percentage from three. But he also annoys the crap out of his main defender cuz he is quick and weirdly good at long 2s. What we have seen is the thunder are similar with schroeder from PG on defense…and a step below on offense. But they should be a force when both are healthy. 60 wins isn’t that hard to imagine.… Read more »
It was worth watching Boston just to see Kyrie suck. I have a feeling Philly is going to under achieve. Man, do they need outside shooting. Korver?
Korver could absolutely end up in Philly…the question is what do we get back? Do we get a pick or two? Do we get a young creator?
Or does Korver end up bringing a brogdan combo?
Or do the cavs make the 6th seed in the east and sneak into the second round with Korver as 6th man of the year? I don’t think Lue is clever enough to accomplish that…but if he is we could be a legit problem in the east.
I was laughing for every Kyrie brick.
I think they need shooting, but there is something else going on there, not sure what. Embiid looked like trash…he looked lazy and disinterested. Yeah, he put up some numbers, he also had some freaking terrible turnovers, and he’s a black hole when he gets the ball. His lethargy level was almost Gummy Bear. I don’t know, that team just kind of looks like a mess to me. Then again, it’s one game…
I’m not planning on watching one second of GS basketball unless it’s against the Cavs.
Good night!
I can’t stand the Celtics, and I can’t stand the Warriors. It’s gonna be a long season.
Guys let Tom rant, stop interrupting him. Much love.
The segment was a half hour! We let him rant plenty!
Man Rozier is a starter on nearly every other team in the league. Kid is really really good. Here is an, unlikely but sickening thought Zachary Lowe pointed out today. Boston could have three first round picks next draft including two top tens and their own.
Boston is better with Rozier, than with Kyrie. Kyrie doesn’t make teams better.
In certain situations he does. He did in 2016. Different in the regular season though and maybe he never really comes back the same.
If the Celtics are in the finals against GSW, and there’s a point where it’s a defensive grind and no one can buy a bucket- you need Kyrie in that scenario. In every other scenario, I would take Rozier over him.
never has.
statistically. in the regular season. https://cavstheblog.com//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////?p=45543
DUDE WHAT ABOUT HIS SIIIICK HANDLES????
I still am low on him. He’s at least playable now, since he improved his three point shooting…before last year I thought he just sucked. I think some team is going to get suckered by Ainge again when they trade for him only to find out he looked good in the Celtics’ system, not so good anywhere else.
Seems like a pretty empty 23-9 for Embiid…
He has to find a way to punish teams down low. Unfortunately, he hasn’t quite reached that level. He will never be a Towns or Davis like big. His foot issues sapped any possibility of that.
He could be close to as good on offense, but in a different way. He is not there yet though. Then again maybe today’s defensive rules (zones) and officiating preclude a true post player from ever being dominant again.
Didn’t watch much of the game, but there was no concerted effort by the Sixers (Simmons, Fultz) to punish that mismatch that I saw.
The Sixers were just turning it over nonstop…couldn’t seem to get it to Embiid in good positions for him…
One last thing about the pod. Agree 100% with Tom. Ethics in journalism, business, politics appear to be reverting to what they were (non-existent) at the end of the 19th century. There are certain “news” organizations that function as anti-intellectual propaganda machines, one of which is considered mainstream. Nothing is really credible from groups like that. A news organization that shows little to no ethical responsibility and functions as a mouthpiece for a political majority is a dangerous thing if people don’t actually check out whether the bs being puked out as “alternative facts” is true or not. There is… Read more »
Also sorry. Had to vent.
You’re completely correct.
Unfortunately the sheep will follow their shepherd. America is sabotaging itself.
You are all, as what I call my “free-range Australians”, welcome to come hang out with me Down Under if it all gets too much. Just know that the rest of the world is pulling for you all to pull out of the current tailspin. Because where you go, we go.
Plus 1
DO THE 76ER’S MISS ILLYSAVA/ BELLINELLI ——-REMEMBER AFTER AQUIRING THOSE 2 PLAYERS IS WHEN THEY REALLY TOOK OFF LAST YEAR —-????
I’m sure they miss that shooting…they are kind of bricky now…
Oh definitely Nomad. Those two were talented guys who knew their roles and didn’t force it.
Seems like it. Those two really did unlock their spacing last year.
Sixers offense is just a disjointed mess.
I sense Simmons is pretty cocky, but if he wants to help his team he needs to get a shot. He shouldn’t be working on anything but that, and working his a$$ off at it.
Also free throws.
Fultz’s movement is so awkward and herky, jerky.
Not too impressive tonight…
Sixers will be better than Celtics by end of season.
I don’t see how.
Unless Kyrie gets inured.
They get desperate for shooting, and we trade them Korver and JR for a first round pick, a second rounder, and fodder.
I can see Korver going there. There or Bucks, most likely.
Bucks would be even better, as even as bad as philly looks tonight, I don’t expect them to finish ahead of the sixers.
Korver going there won’t make them better than the Celtics.
If healthy:
Ky > Fultz
Hayward > Simmons
Embiid > Holford — not by much by what Embiid showed during last playoffs.
Tatum, Brown and Rozier are better than anyone else on the 76ers and we still have Smart and Morris who, although I hate, can play ball when they apply themselves. Adding KK to 76ers won’t get them over the Celtics.
By “We” I meant us in the conversation, not we as if I was rooting for them.
Ha I figured.
And sending them JR is just being mean lol.
Hehe. Also a pipe dream. But I can hope.
True. Remains to be seen on the first two though. I picked the celts to run away with the east if they are healthy. But they may not be the same, or it could take a year.
Ky and Hayward have to prove they’re healthy. The Sixers need shooting not just to beat the celts, but every other playoff team in the East. Remember they lost in the second round. Their goal should be at least the ECF.
Imagine if the Sixers had Tatum and the Celtics had Fultz…
You can’t blame them for that pick. Fultz was a legit top three pick based on talent and production and he had a pretty good jump shot in college. How the heck could they know he would screw himself up that badly? Set back his development years.
Eh. I wasn’t in love with him.
GMe was terrible. I went to bed. Kyrie looks bad and fultz is a body but…
I know they did the trade for the extra asset, but I think the Sixers could use Mikal Bridges this year. He can shoot, and even as a rookie, defend adequately…they could use the shooting.
Rather have Miles after preseason. I think I was way wrong about that kid.
IMO it will go down as one of the dumbest draft day trades in recent memory.
Kyrie chucking and ice cold
Philly looks horrendous and Boston doesn’t look much better.
Sloppiness and unfocused is the trade off for rest and fewer preseason games. If they cut it even more, the first month will essentially be unwatchable.
Completely true. There just isn’t any flow to the game whatsoever. Fultz looks lost out there to me.
The shortened preseason makes for such sloppy first month. I sort of hate that.
Nobody dunks as hard as Embiid today. Maybe dj.
Haha. Kyrie totally caught watching the paint dry during a fultz back cut.
I forgot how much I hate Reggie Miller.
ROY, Ayton has the talent, skill, and game to run away with it right now. However, agree he won’t get the ball. Booker will take a ton of shots and they have no pg. He still could if he makes as much of an impact in rim protection as he did in preseason.
Doncic will get it because I expect he will handle the ball a ton, and really those two guys out off all the rookies I have seen are by far the most ready to contribute with great efficiency right now.
Man. This Boston/Philly game is kinda lousy.
Turnover every other possession…
I won’t bet against LBJ as far as getting 48-50 wins. The lakers probably are better than the cavs were last year. Better defenders. More young players that will actually play. Enough shooting. KCP, Hart, Ingram, Kuzma, and Mykauliuk, is enough shooting with better coaching and much much much better individual defenders than last year’s cavs. Rondo locked in on defense is still a bulldog. Last year was one of two years in his career he had a negative (-.7 still solid for a pg) dBPM which is incredible for a pg. And he upped it in the playoffs (small… Read more »
Basically if LBJ is at the five, they could shut people down if he wants to. So many switchable lineups. I hate it, but I think they will challenge for a 4-5 seed. If Ingram takes a leap which I think he will, they could be very very good much sooner than people expect. If ball fixed his shot at all, he will be a good starter. Kuzma and Hart are going to be good.
Sixers are just a turnover machine so far this game…
Simmons appears to me to be the same shooter he was last year, i.e., lousy.
Which Morris twin is the dumb one? I forget…
I’d really be A-OK not hearing Reggie Miller talk about anything ever again.
IS ANYBODY SHOCKED THAT NICK BOSA IS LEAVING THE BUCKEYES TO PREPARE FOR THE DRAFT—I AM NOT —HAD THIS CONVERSATION WITH SOME BUDDIES RECENTLY —-TOLD THEM I THOUGHT BOSA WOULD DO EXACTLY WHAT HE IS DOING —–THEY ALL LOOKED AT ME LIKE I WAS CRAZY —-( I GET THAT ALOT ANYWAYS )—–AM SURE AGENTS / FATHER–BROTHER / INFLUENCED HIS DECISION ——TOO MUCH AT STAKE—POTENTIAL #1 PICK TO COME BACK AND PLAY
I think he and his family were on the fence…could have gone either way. Hard to really blame him, with that injury it’s iffy even coming back late season.
If it was me, I would do exactly the same thing. Take the money.
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/1052345506570141696?s=19
I would probably root for every team over the Celtics his year, even the Lakers.
Agree with MikeO!
Are you suggesting you’d prefer Golden State to Boston? Unfathomable.
Why do you hate the sixers?
Podcast already rounding into season form! I’m only baffled by half… mostly because I was laughing too hard.
You guys think there’s anything, uhmm fishy, about Allie Clifton following LeBron out to LA?
Following that train of thought, the two new Cavs’ female casters, Angel Gray and Cayleigh Griffin, are not only stunningly beautiful but bring forth a lot of experience within the WNBA and NBA.
I’m excited to see how they, specially Gray who will be on the actual sidelines, come together with our other local casters to provide us an entertainment and insightful information.
Like what? Just as fishy as Windy following LeBron to Miami.
There once was some water cooler talk… Mods, if you want to delete these comments you’re welcome. I didn’t need to go there.
You mean did Allie Clifton just get gifted a gigantic market reporting job because she has a connection to a colleague who moved there?
Channing Fry can step 3 me all day, as long as he drains 3s… (okay, I’ll let myself out).
I’m glad got the right information, before he started going all Rambo on all those Strawberry Quick consumers.
Yeah that’s scary that Bruce actually believes that hoax. But there’s a lot of propaganda out there, and people actually stand by there own theories, no matter how many times it has been proved to be false.
Hot Take: I’m predicting that Utah wins the Finals.
Quick question – am I mistaken or did your twitter account disappear? I depended on your retweets for much of my content….
Haha. Yeah I deleted it. I was inspired by JJ Redick in that BR article, which discusses tribalism and depression linked to social media usage. I debated doing the same with FB, but kept that going because of photo sharing with friends/family.
I’m predicting that the Raptors will be in the NBA Finals.
Donovan Mitchell for MVP
Unless he gets hurt and misses a lot of games, I’m betting it’s Giannis this year. I’m sure Lebron will have the LA media riding his jock all year, though.
Yeah I hope Giannis has learned to shoot.
I didn’t realize the Charlotte picked up Bizmack. Didn’t they originally draft him?
I’m taking the under on the Montreal Allouettes…

Podcast cut off before you could finish your thought on tiny houses haha. I agree the hippy culture around tiny houses is cringe. But buildings and houses are a leading contributor to our CO2 footprint, above all means of transportation combined. Also, sadly the yummy red meat of cows is the fastest way to stem climate change as methane traps more heat than CO2 and dissipates faster. But this may all need fact checking. This is super important to the survival of our kids!!! Pass on to a friend even if you don’t have kids! Also, could you do some… Read more »

Quick Cavs: The Fantasy League draft recap: Round 1: Cory went rogue, bucking the consensus and making the pick of the draft, nabbing Anthony Davis first overall. JMay decided to turn full heel, extracting the despised Lebron James with the 4th pick, even though Luka Doncic was ludicrously still available. Cory may have made the pick of the draft but Zach undoubtedly made the pick of the round taking Russell Westbrook all the way down at number 7. Round 2: No one can question Robert’s undying devotion to the Wine and Gold, as he shocked draft chat by taking the… Read more »
In the 9th round, team Martin snaked Cedi Osman from me. In the final round, I got EG by grabbing Jaren Jackson Jr. one spot ahead of him. Much hand wringing ensued.
Hard to believe Cedi lasted that long!
If you somehow can obtain Clarkson in a trade and then stomach starting him for a week, I will gift you Cedi.
LeBron was there at 4… I couldn’t pass that up. Especially since he will be in sunny SoCal for his usual January bout of depression…
Also, to be fair, I also have Doncic. I just took him in round 5.
Hahahaha not noticing you also had Doncic is certainly a black mark on my draft analysis.
I am about to listen to this podcast…and the description above has already made it worth it. Cavs win 42 games this year and Lue keeps his job…BUT the problem comes when the cavs upset the Bucks in round 1 AND upset the 76rs in round 2. Tristan Thompson leads the cavs to the finals in a ridiculous narrative…and against the suddenly relevant OKC Thunder, the cavs get to 2-2 in the finals. Who wins? Of course the cavs win! No OKC ridiculousness can overcome the cavs’ Cedi Osman led offense and the young bull anchored defense…Westbrook struggles to produce… Read more »
or we don’t win the finals 4-3…and we make the playoffs and get bounced in round 1. Either way…Lue will probably be around for a few years…so lets make the best of it.
The thought of Lue “being around a few more years” is appalling.
Wouldn’t that be great? But I can’t remember the last true underdog that won the NBA Finals. Mavericks over the Heat? I wish that there was a little more randomness to the outcomes (especially now that we don’t have Lebron).
…aside from the Cavs in 2016 :)
I have no idea what I’m talking about. I’d just like to see the Cavs win it all this year.
