Live Thread: All Star Saturday (#TheBuzz)
2019-02-16It’s that time of year again… the unofficial halfway (but really almost two-thirds way) point of the NBA season, where the League has a week off to celebrate itself and fuel storylines and buzzy rumors for the remaining stretch run, playoffs and summer.
This time around, we find ourselves in Charlotte, North Carolina, (home of the Hornets) to watch the stars come out to compete in feats of skill, shooting and throwing it down before the real pickup game begins tomorrow afternoon. We’ve already seen Ray Allen light up the Celebrity Game and Kyle Kuzma lead Team USA to victory over Team World in the Rising Stars Game last night. Tonight is all about spectacle, sizzle and slams.
Here’s the lineup of events, participants and odds for each to win, courtesy of ESPN and the Westgate Las Vegas SportsBook…
Skills contest:Â A field of eight (four frontcourt, four backcourt players) competes head-to-head in a three-round timed tournament, with the brackets’ two winners battling for the title in the final round. Players must complete the following obstacle-course drills in order: ballhandling, passing, layup/dunk, 3-pointer.
Odds (via Westgate Las Vegas SportsBook):Â
Mike Conley: 6-1
Luka Doncic: 4-1
De’Aaron Fox: 7-2
Nikola Jokic: 6-1
Kyle Kuzma: 8-1
Jayson Tatum: 6-1
Nikola Vucevic: 10-1
Trae Young: 4-1
3-point contest: Ten of the game’s best shooters — including Stephen Curry, Seth Curry, Dirk Nowitzki and defending champ Devin Booker — take the court for the two-round competition, with each player having 60 seconds to shoot and make as many of the 25 balls as he can. Four of the five racks include four regulation NBA balls (one point) and one “money” ball (two points). The fifth rack consists only of money balls and can be placed at any of the five shooting locations.
- Round 1:Â Nine shooters take the court in random order, while the defending champion — Booker — will shoot last.
- Championship:Â The top three from Round 1 will compete in the championship round, with the lowest Round 1 score competing first and highest Round 1 score competing last.
- Tiebreakers:Â If necessary, a 30-second tiebreaker would decide the final spot in the championship round; a 60-second tiebreaker would decide the 2019 champion.
- Odds (via Westgate Las Vegas SportsBook):Â
Devin Booker: 4-1
Seth Curry: 12-1
Stephen Curry: 7-5
Danny Green: 16-1
Joe Harris: 8-1
Buddy Hield: 6-1
Damian Lillard: 10-1
Khris Middleton: 14-1
Dirk Nowitzki: 40-1
Kemba Walker: 14-1
Dunk contest: Four of the game’s high-flyers — Charlotte’s Miles Bridges, Atlanta’s John Collins, OKC’s Hamidou Diallo and New York’s Dennis Smith Jr. — take center stage in All-Star Saturday Night’s premier event.
- Round 1:Â Each competitor will complete two dunks, and the two players with the highest composite scores will move on to the championship round.
- Championship:Â The remaining two competitors will each complete two dunks; the player with the highest composite score is crowned champion. As is the case for Round 1, the maximum score per round is 100, while the lowest score is 60.
- Tiebreakers:Â If necessary, a one-dunk “dunk-off” will determine who advances to the championship round or who is crowned champion. If, after a championship-round dunk-off two players are still tied, a “judges’ choice” will determine a 2019 winner.
Catch all the action starting at 8pm EST on TNT… and chime in below to follow along.
THINK ALOT OF WHAT THE CAVS WILL OFFER / OTHER TEAMS WILL BE THE CONSISTENCY OF HIS PERFORMANCES THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON———HE WILL NO DOUBT GET THE MIN’S TO PUT HIS TALENTS ON DISPLAY ——-CAVS DO HAVE AN ADVANTAGE THEY GET TO SEE HIM DAILY/ PRACTICES ALSO——AND HAVE BEEN THE 1 TEAM TO GIVE HIM A REAL CHANCE
Probably. If he perfoms like he has he will get some money. Still it won’t be a lot because it is such a short track record.
AGREE JOHN B—WHAT WOULD YOU OFFER—–2 YR / 13 MILLION ?
Seems reasonable. Doubt he would get many offers more than that at this point. Based on his career production thus far, you might even be able to snag him for less, basically 2 years at 5 mil a season, which is more than his rookie contract per year. Teams aren’t likely going to pay a lot for a track record of very brief flashes of inconsistent production from a guy three years in. Paying more for a guy like Chriss is a bit of a risk because you are basically gambling on potential.
He’s had like two good games…
JUST WATCHING SMOKIN JOE WIN 3 PT CONTEST / WONDERING HOW HE WOULD LOOK IN A CAVS UNIFORM / WAS SMOKIN JOE LET GO DUE TO THE “LEBRON AFFCT ” WIN AT ALL COST NOW —REMOVE THE YOUTH WITH POTENTIAL–GET RELIABLE VETS “———SMOKIN JOE SHOULD BE A REMINDER TO US– ( GIVEN TIME AND PLAYING MIN’S / EXPERIENCE ) —OF WHAT POSSIBLY CHRISS COULD BECOME —–PATIENCE IS ON OUR SIDE NOW OR SHOULD BE !!
Obviously, judging college age basketball talent is extremely difficult. Like stock picking. But, as you point out, even when you’ve got the guy in your locker room for a couple of years (cf. Danny Green, Joe Harris), sometimes you still get it wrong. Or maybe it was a win now mentality.
Chriss is probably worth taking a flyer on next year on a short term deal. I don’t think I would sign him long term yet. The rest of the season, especially given this team, is maybe too short an audition for big money. If someone else wants to pay him big bucks this offseason, so be it.
Just re-watched the highlight of the 2016 dunk competition. Lavine vs. Gordon. Never gets old.
Yeah probably best of all time.
Nique v Jordan for me. But those are the top 2.
BTW, not as impressed with Diallo’s dunk, he put his hands on Shaq’s back & pushed off. Webber was right.
Yeah maybe a little, but it didn’t seem like that push would have been that much help based on where it was on Shaq. I have to go back and watch it again.
But it probably isn’t a top 10 or 15 dunk.
Holy **** that dunk was all time by diallo
Wowser. Just watched that. That seems impossible.
That Collins dunk was garbage.
Mugsy looks ancient.
staying mad about Smokin’ Joe lmaooo
Yeah. This is a murderer’s row of former cavs. Don’t forget they had Seth curry too.
he’d look real nice as a backup PG!!! LOL.
Uh. Delly has that on lock down.
Oy, c-Webb, Kenny and Shaq are awful and popashot?
Bonus: Joe beat Steph Curry! Zing!
Go Smokin’ Joe!
Whew! Smoking Joe Harris!
Just tuned in. I usually skip the first hour. Just watched bohemian rhapsody. Fun stuff!
Just watched Duke win…. Barrett with a triple-double…. Zion starting to work the post more with success and getting some playmaking opportunities with the all-backup lineup. Reddish’s shot wasn’t on tonight.
Zion working the post more is going to help his game IMO… hopefully, he’ll start to see different defenses (double teams and zones) and start learning how to make plays with the pass.
Zero turnovers for Barrett… played a great game.
