WFNY’s Cavaliers Draft Mailbag
2011-06-22Scott Sargent answers questions like this one:
Q: Can the Cavs combine Hickson with the fourth overall selection to move up to second-overall and draft Derrick Williams?
A: Yes, they can. But they won’t.
Regardless of what fans think of Hickson and his occasional bout with inconsistency, the team – along with other league executives and scouts – view Hickson as a better talent than Williams when the two are compared side by side. If they would not deal him by himself for the second overall selection, they most certainly would not add their fourth-overall pick to the mix.
The article is a pretty informative FAQ for what we will likely see from the Cavs on draft night. By the way, I wouldn’t trade Hickson and the #4 for Williams either.
Reading the rest of Sargent’s Q&A, regarding potential Hickson trades: “the team is trying very, very hard to acquire a lottery selection in the 2012 draft to go along with a third lottery pick this year” and “the team will continue to aim for two draft picks or a combination of a draft selection and a starting wing player” If Hickson can somehow be used as the centerpiece of a trade that netted either of these options; that sounds good to me. It seems like the article must be overvaluing Hickson. Also, the Q&A states that Hickson is 21. Hickson… Read more »
I agree about no Hickson and #4 for #2.
If Hickson’s perceived value right now is even remotely close to what the paragraph above indicates…the Cavs have to trade him somewhere.
Also, speaking of overvaluing a player, it’s laughable that the Wiz think so highly of Javale McGee that they won’t trade him and the #6 to Minny for Derrick Williams. They either don’t like Williams or are sorely mistaken about how good McGee is at basketball.
Do we know if GMs around the league think Hickson is good and/or can be great? I’ve always felt the Cavs have overvalued him because, for the past couple years, he has been the only young Cavalier who looked like he might sniff an all-star team. I would trade him straight-up for Williams in a heartbeat. I just wouldn’t trade either a.) Hickson and Kanter or b.) Hickson, the rights to Big V, and whoever we get at #18 with the Wizards’ pick, which is essentially what we’re doing if we dealt Hickson and the #4 to Minny.
The real question is, Do you buy that “the cavs along with other league executives and scouts view Hickson as a better talent than Williams…they would not deal him by himself for the second overall selection”?
